Comments:
I am researching the history of the Massey side of my family. Taylor Massey (b: Dec 1855 in Tennessee) married Ellen Phelps (b: 1866 in MO) and they had 5 children together - Fannie, Auvy, Auley, Albert, and John. According to the 1900 census, Taylor had 2 children from a prior marriage -Franklin and Mary. Taylor died some time between 1904 (when their last child was born) and 1910 (where Ellen was listed as a widow on the census).

I cannot find any additional information on Taylor Massey so if anybody can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Married first Martha Cater, who died before 1880, my grandmother was b. 1873 in Hoxie, Ar. Her father Joseph (Jobe) took her to live with an aunt & uncle William Cater. He remarried to a Eva Statler in 1892 and they had a daughter named Maggie, she was in the 1900 Randolph Co. Census, 6 years of age. I haven't found him in the 1910 census. My mother who Lena Hall was orphaned at about age 6 believed that she was born in Pocahontas on February 18, 1902 to George Hall and Mary Robinson. We helped her search before she died in 1971 but were never able to find any information about her birth or either of her parents. Her sister Beatrice was born about two years later to the same parents. My mother tanned easily and thought she remebered that she had at least some Cherokee lineage.

Perhaps with the strength of the Internet and the growing national interest in our history and genealogy. There is information available today. This is the first step in a new focus to find my mother roots.

I look forward to visiting Pocahontas n the not too distant future. Mason Charles Moseley

It's wonderful to know that the residents of Randolph County take so much pride in their family histories. What a treat it's been to search your website for information about my great great grandfather, Dr. Henry Anthony Slaughter and his wife, Julia Downing Slaughter. I found two photos, a short profile of Dr. Slaughter, and census information. I can't wait to dig for more. If anyone has any information about Dr. Slaughter and Julia, and their children, Ruth, Garland and Lorene, please let me know. Dr. Slaughter died in 1912, after living most of his life in Maynard. Julia died (I believe) in 1914. Garland died in 1918, but I know nothing about him.
Thank you!

On my next birthday, I will be 70 yrs. old. I often return, in my memory to the wonderful times I had as a child, during the summers in Hardy, Arkansas. There is no river like the Spring River ! My parents and I would stay at Rio Vista, on the river, exactly 1 miles up river from the old bridge that was washed away in a flood quite a few years ago. I use to love to dive into the river from theh falls at this site and swim all the way to the bridge. I also would canoe back and forth from Rio Vista to "town" and back. We had a tradition of walking the boat up river past the falls, and past location where another river fed into the Spring River on the right (higher falls) to the area of the old girls scouts' and boy scouts' camp and then we would drift down river. It would be a day trip with packed lunch and all. Many of my parents' friends and mine also would come over for a weekend. We also had other family (from Memphis where we then lived) that would visit us there. It is my favorite place to visit in memory. On my wall is an oil painting of my grandfather, one of my first cousins and myself, sitting on the boats at the dock of Rio Vista, fishing. My first cousin and I were about 7-8 yrs. old. My first cousin who is a well known oil painter in Canton, Mississippi painted this portrait of "Perfect Peace" and gave it to me. I can look at that picture and it takes me back to Hardy, Arkansass for a wonderful memory visit. Both parents have now passed on. Just my first cousin and our our children and grandchildren remain here, but they have all heard about Hardy, Arkansas, seen the many photos of us there, and the wonderful times we had there.

Thanks for all the memories !

Hi from Ireland.

Patrick Martin, my grandfather's brother, emigrated to the US from County Donegal in Ireland late in the 19th or early in the 20th century and settled in Pocahontas Arkansas.
I note that a Patrick Martin who appears to have died in July 1934 is buried at St Paul's Catholic cemetery in Pocahontas. My only other information is that a descendant of Patrick Martin called Edgar Martin lived in Louisville Kentucky in the 1960s. Would someone in Pocahontas know of a Martin famly who may be of Irish descent in the area and could help my genealogical project?

A great website. I found lot's of interesting items. I also found my great uncle Adam C. Johnson and his wife, Hettie E. (Ferguson) daughter of Ezekiel C. & Nancy A. Box. I found them both, plus what seems to be brothers of Hettie's in the Hite Cemetery in Biggers. I also found Adam, Hettie & their children, Herbert, Annie, & Mary in the 1910 Census in Current River area and Hettie, Vester (Herbert Sylvester), Ethel (Annie Ethel) and Mary in the 1920 Census in Current River area and Hettie and daughter May (Mary May) in the 1930 census in Reyno. Does anyone know if there are any living relatives of Adam & Hettie still living in Randolph County? Also, any other info regarding this family would be greatly appreciated. I hope to make a trip back to visit the area in October. Hope the weather is good. Also, who would I contact to order a phone book of the area? Thanks for any help.

I just found your Randolph County web-site and it is beautiful.

I have been helping our daughter, Sallie, gather the corroborating information she needs for her membership appliation in the Daughters of the American Revolution on the Greenhaw (my father's mother) side of our family.

I am a native of Tuckerman in Jackson County but have lived in Trumann in Poinsett County since 1975 and, also, in the
Jonesboro area since graduating from ASU in 1968.

My father was Cordie William Biggers, a farmer, at Tuckerman. My grandfather was Thomas Calvin Biggers, a farmer and rural mail carrier at Tuckerman. My great grandfather was Calvin Biggers who was born in Randolph County, AR in 1845. Calvin was the son of Ambrose and
Mary Ann (McDonald) Biggers. Calvin married Elizabeth
Conditt (nee Ridley), a widow.

I discovered the article on your web-site by Darla Hopper about James W. Bigger, American Poineer. This article appears to confirm my research on Calvin Biggers prior to his move to Jackson County, AR and my research on Ambrose Bigger.

The 1850 census of Randolph County list Mary A. Biggers as
head of household and lists her children. Goodspeed's history of Jackson County, I guess an interview with Calvin Biggers, states that Calvin Biggers' mother was living in
Baxter County at the time of the article. Mountain Home and Baxter County census records and cemetery records are full of Biggers, especially Jefferson Biggers, one of Mary
A. Biggers' children listed in the 1850 Randolph County census.

Sorry for the long comments but I thought you might be interested in this information. I would enjoy hearing from some of you if you have the time.

One other thing, in the 1970s I worked for Johnston, Freeman & Company, CPAs and did several returns for B. F. Bigger and his wife. Through Mr. B. F. and one of my co-workers, Joe Pace, CPA, I met Steve Bigger and Patricia Bigger Bell. We decided we were not relatives, but now it appears that we erred.

Thanks,

William T. (Bill) Biggers

I have recently found that my great uncle, James O. Harris lived in Randolph Co, Richardson Township in 1910 census. I believe he went there for railroad work. A lot of my Illinois relatives were railroad workers. His son, Ora or possibly Clarence Ora, lived there in 1900. He was back in Vermilion Co IL in 1920 living with his father and was a widow with two children, Claude and Eula Mae. I don't know who he was married to. he must have married shortly after 1900 as Claude was born abt 1904 in Arkansas. If anyone has info on this family, please contact me. thank you.

I believe the Joseph H. Hailey in the 1900 Randolph Co., Ar. is my g-grandfather, but have very little info on him. He did not raise my grandmother (Nora Ellen Hailey b. 1873 in Hoxie, Ar. Her mother died suddenly sometime before 1880 in Ar., and he remarried at least once and maybe twice. She was raised by an aunt and uncle and moved to Missouri. Married in 1889 to Abraham McKinley. I have a letter dated Nov. 24, 1907 from her father, mailed in Lake City, Ar. He was asking for her to forgive him. She told me she never answered the letter. She had not seen him since she was a real small girl. In the letter he mentioned a person named Maggie. The 1900 Randolph Co., Ar. Census, shows him married, wife Eva and daughter Maggie. I was wondering if the County Court House has land records 1880-1910? Also, is Bristow a small town in this county? I would appreciate any info. Our family is trying to determine if "Brown" is our true name. We have an ancestor, Elijah M. Brown, who lived in either Jackson or Jacksville in 1862(he was 15) when his home was invaded by bushwhackers and his father was hanged by these marauders. Elijah managed to escape and joined the Confederate forces, (I am assuming) which were in the area at the time. He was a bugler while in the service and at the end of the war, he rode home on his horse and found the homes were burned to the ground and his family or what was left of it had disappeared. He followed up on any clues which came his way to find his family to no avail. He eventually ended up in Indian Territory where he met and married and had his family. He used to receive letters from someone who only used initials in the return address and no one was ever allowed to read these letters. We therefore think he may not have been using his true name. Does anyone have any ideas of where we could start on our search for the real Elijah?

She had given me some photographs and finally looking through them I found a class photograph of Pocahontas High School (Freshmen class of 1847-48) unfortunately it is not in very good shape and there are only a few names written on the back and these are only first names. I know a few of her classmates are still alive and some still live in that area but I do not know their names. The only ones I remember was Coleen Hass and Kenneth Perrin and Wanda Kerfoot from another class photograph I had seen at one time but if you all are intrested it this one I will gladly summit it to you to use if you could give me a address to send it to. Thank You and I love this site it is very easy to use if someone is a novice like me

I am researching historic Christian churches throughout the state of Arkansas, and intend filming those "golden oldies" which are remaining standing - churches constructed in the 19th century and no later. I know of the Salem Church, which allegedly is the first church constructed in Arkansas. I realize it is no longer standing. Are there others which remain in their original constructional condition? Thank you for whatever help you are able to provide. Any help will be worth a day's drive from Fayetteville to your area.

A very nice website with very interesting information. Unfortunately, I didn't find much about my Fines-- only David. John and Mary Fine moved to Pocahontas from St Louis in 1836 with their five sons and daughter, Eda Ann. About 1855, Mary, John's wife died. In 1857, John moved all his family with sons' wives and others to California, to Tulare County. If you want any of the CA story, I have it. I wish I could find out where Mary was buried and why she died. She is not listed in your records.

PS: Where is Napoleon, AR? Why can't I find any records about it? I know it was washed out sometime, but it had people before that. Win

Searching for any info on Bias Luther (Lute) Russell and Annie (Coleman) Russell. He died in Marian Ark in 1946 and she died in 1963. Both are buried in Walnut Ridge I'm told, along with several of their children; Porter, Irvy, Joe and a daughter Virgie (Virginia) Stringer.Annie had several sisters. One named Nora who was married to a Bud McDaniel I believe. They also lived in the pocahauntes/walnut ridge area....Does anyone remember these people? Please email me if you do.......Thanks for this great website.

Thought you would want to know that when you try to enter Randolph Co site from ARGENWEB the link will not work because the randolph is misspelled, leaving the r off. We noticed it & and added the r and went right to the site.

About 1844 -1870. William Slinkard was my GR GR grandfather, he died 1849. Searching for his children John William Slinkard and Amanda. I believe Wm's 2nd wife Eliz. (Wilkerson) Slinkard remarried to James Sutton (1950 Census) and I have been unable to trace these two children. Any info would be apprec. TNX

I am looking for someone that might have information about Bum Scott and the fairy he operated across the Black River at Old Davidsonville area or a possible source of information as to his origin. I have researched limited info gotten from the library and courthouse records; but have been unable to determine where he came from.
