Greetings. I am in the process of reconstructing my family genealogy in anticipation of visiting Germany with a group of 40 relatives, meeting an equal number of German relatives this summer (2011) for the anniversary of our great-great grandparents wedding anniversary. We are descended from Margarete v. Scharffenberg, who was married to Joachim v. Bülow, a knight from Plüskow, Mecklenburg. He died in Ratzeburg in 1514. I have no information on her other than her name. So...cousins..greetings. Good luck on your genealogical adventures. (I live in Zionsville, Indiana by the way. Our family is a family of Lutheran pastors. I grew up in Minnesota)

Nice to meet you via web - I am a Sharpenberg - Homer was my father, Frank Paul was his father (2/20/1882 - 12/23/1973)from PA. Frank's father was Heinrich Schaffenberg b.1850 - arrived via Ellis Island 7/21/1881 from Austria. Heinrich had a brother that went to Michigan - I don't know his name. I'm thinking we may be related to the castle people but nothing definate on that.
Do you think we are related at all?

My mother met my father, Franz during the war when he was a major in the army. He was executed by the Nazis for supposedly having something to do with the July bomb plot to kill Hitler. My mother came to England 3 years later and died the next day...none of my mother's family had met my father or knew much about him. Through the internet, I now discover there seem to be a lot of Scharfenbergs and I have no idea where to start looking in order to discover more/anything about his side of the family...a long shot maybe, but wondered if you could give me any pointers.

My great grand-mother was born Skarpenberg which is the Swedish version for Scharfenberg. Henrik Skarpenberg came over from Denmark sometime in the 14th century and worked for Queen Margareta. We managed to trace the lineage back to the Middle-Ages and found that Scharfenberg's were German knights who fought as mercenary soldiers in numerous skirmishes.

Hi, my name is Ewald Scharfenberg and I live in Venezuela (South America). Maybe Venezuela is your “missing linkö in the amazing genealogy you trace for the Scharfenberg surname. My father, Ewald Heinrich Scharfenberg, came here in the early 50’s. He was born in Schlensburg, near Kiel (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany) in 1914, according to some dutch papers I keep about him. He served at the german merchant navy until the beginning of World War II, when he and other officers had to sink their ship front of Paramaribo, Surinam (former Dutch Guayana, then at war with Germany). He stayed there some years before coming to Venezuela. He passed away in 1977.
Right now I’m journalist, trying to start an investigation on my father’s life. During this investigation in Internet I’ve found your interesting site. I wonder if you are in permanent touch with other Scharfenberg families not only in America, but in Germany and specifically in Kiel, in order to stablish a relationship with them and/or ask them about my father’s german roots.
Thank you indeed in advance. Greetings from Caracas (Venezuela, South America),

I have not visited the World Connect site in quite some time and was surprised and delighted to see your GEDCOM entry for Thurza MINES, who was my ggg-grandmother on my mothers side of the family! I am descended from Joseph and Thurza's daughter Mary Sophia CLARK who married John Bailey CADE. The Cade's were also from Caradoc, Middlesex, Ontario. Although I have the CADE genealogy back to the 1700's, my CLARK research ends with Joseph and Thurza and their origins in Cumberland and Wiltshire, which, if memory serves, was census information. I also seem to remember finding a likely record in the on-line U.K. records for a potential father for Joseph...the link being the use of Pearson ( Pierson ) as a first name, but without digging into my files that's about all I can remember right now. Over the next while, I'll start comparing my notes against your gedcom as I believe I have some more information on some of the other children and I know I have some letters etc. that were written to Mary from her family in Ontario after she and John Bailey moved to British Columbia.
I've tried to email you using your address listed on RootsWeb but get a "mail returned" message. I've followed your links here and hope this reaches you.

You have posted on Ancestry.Com, information concerning Isaac E. Loewen (b) 16 Jan 1850, (d)7 March 1925.
Isaac E. Loewen was my Great Grandfather. He was married first to Helen Savaska, who died 10 days after childbirth, and the baby Isaac died 10 days after her.
Isaac E. Loewen then married Katherine Friesen, (b) 29 March 1854, (d) 15 Mar 1925, in Hillsboro, Marion County Kansas.
They had 10 children, the 9th being my Grandfather, Herman Loewen (b) 27 July 1894 in Nebraska, (d) 28 Apr 1958 in Hutchinson, KS. married Lizzie Stubby 7 Dec 1913.
My Mother, the 3rd child, Rozella Esther Loewen remembers her Grandfather Isaac E, and Grandmother Katherine Friesen Stubby, and was present at both funerals, the second taking place on March 25, 1925, when Isaac's grave was reopened, the casket opened, and she was pushed to the edge of the graves to "look once, and see both your grandparents together for the last time".....
I'm very interested in visiting with you about the information you have in regard to Isaac E. and Katherine Friesen Lowen.

My ancestors immigrated from Germany to Streator, Ill. in approximately 1880's to 1900 era. Do you have any record of family history that would fit in this slot. My dad's name was Karl Julius Scharfenberg and his brother was Frank and their sister Sidon and their parents were Julius and Emma Scharfenberg. They all settled in Streator, Ill. I believe all the children were born in Streator. All the family that has passed on that immigrated to Streator are burried in Streator in the Scharfenberg section of the cemetary. Karl and Frank Scharfenberg graduated from the University of Ill. in 1922. Frank carried on with the family clothing store in Streator called Scharfenberg Bros. and then later when my dad moved to Ft. Worth, TX and opened up his own distribution business Frank renamed the clothing store simply SCHARFENBERGS and then he finally sold the property on the corner of 9th Street in Streator in approximately the middle 60's. Let me know if you know of any connection or if you would like any more information concerning a possible connection of our families. Thanks... Rick Scharfenberg ... Midland, TX

My dictionary mention a danish-norwegian family of military
officers may be a branch of the mechlenburg/pomerian family
of von Scharffenberg. Names mentioned : Herman Nicolai von S
colonel 1715, d 1727 on Elingård in Onsøy, Norway. His son,
lieutenant colonel Ulrik Ditlef S. 1708 - 1795 was father to
colonelm Herman Nicolai S. 1738 - 1810. his grandson was Hedevard S 1819 - 1893 who was father to med.doctor Herman Fredrik S 1848 - 1930 and med doctor Johan s. 1869 -. The
dictinary says that there is an article by A.W.Rasch "Den
norske Grev av slægten S" (The norwegian branch of the S.
family) in Personalhistorisk tidsskrift VI, 5 (1914)
