I'm interested inthe history of towns such as Wadena. My ancestors were pioneers and some located in Idaho, Colo, and Texas. I am attempting to assemble a social commentary relating to country building.

Drove past the Big Brick yesterday.
The only part left standing is the tallest part. The long lowest part has all fallen down. So sad! Wadena has lost most of a part of their history!

My grandparents lived across the gravel road from the Herriman Mansion when I was growing up. We would go for walks in the woods behind the house looking for deer antlers and we would peak into the mansion to see if we could see anything. My father used to tell us ghost stories about the mansion, about a man with no head and a girl that had to nail a nail into the floor of the ballroom. Scary at the time, especially when you had to sleep across the road.

I grew up in Wadena since I was born till I was the age of 18. I have always wondered what the mansion looked like inside. I remember a time that a couple of my friends and I had sat in a drive way into the field just down from the mansion and they were telling ghost stories of the place. I didn't belive them but we had some good times and good stories. I can't believe what it looks like inside! It would be great if you could restore it! I am sure it would bring some attraction to Wadena. I miss the small town but I had moved further south where this will be home for a very long time since my fiance and I are buying this home with my three children in the country and my dream home has finally come true thanks to the wonderful man in my life.

My father was partners with Paul Smith & Family that owned this farm from 1967 through 1983 or so.

That was one scarey place to stay in. I can't tell you how many times we had to shovel out the 2nd and 3rd floors from the birds, rodents, bats, bees, etc.

As a 7 year old child I lived in a house just west of the present Bill & Dona Mathiesen home. I can remember going past "the big brick" and being able to see in because none of the windows were boarded up.
Is the restoration project still going?

At one time I worked for Paul Smith who farmed that Herriman property. There are other remains of old buildings and the railroad bed across the road from the Brick and in those big bottom fields. At one time that was quite a house and it is one of the few homes in the area to have been built in a more primitive style and in my mind that has always made it more interesting. I am glad someone is trying to save it. the last time I was in there the walls were cracked even though they were two layers of brick. I will watch for more progress.

I am a great-great-great granddaughter of Major Herriman. My grandmother used to tell stories about the Major and his mansion--for example, evidently his second wife helped to design the house (she insisted on the wooden grating on the porch so that her pet birds wouldn't escape!)

I'm delighted that someone is interested in restoring this wonderful old building. Best of luck to you!

In my father's box of pictures I have found several pictures of Herriman children. They are all blond. My older brothers said they were his cousins. Evidently about 1918 the Herrimans lived in Plevna, Ks. What is interesting to me is that many of my Condit family also came from Morris County, Pa. Just wondered if by any chance your Herriman and mine are in the same family. Mine of Lizzie, Inez (married Harry William Higgins in Abbyville, Reno Cty, KS. Elias and a cousin Francis Porter.

My father-in-law owns the brick. It's a nice old building, but amount of dollars it would take to fix it is staggering. I know this because I've been doing remolding and general carpentry for about 10 years. So good luck and wish you Gods blessing in your goal.

What a marvelous project this has grown into thus far! My Mother, Thelma (Davis) Hermen was born in the "Brick" and was where her sister's Laurel and Lucille had lived as well. What memories these are - ya'all remember Harold & Thelma Hermen who lived in that great big two story house in Wadena before we all moved to Colorado in 1952. Such Golden Memories! It is a blessing to see this Herriman Project in the works! God Bless!

Great web site. I wish you the best in your goal of restoring this beautiful building. I visited the home about four years ago, and it certainly is worthy of being restored. Will be watching the progress with great interest.
