My Ancestor in the 1st MSM Cavalry Jess M. Underwood
Comments:
My greatgrandfather, Jess M. Underwood fought as a Jonny Reb for the 59th Virginia Infantry. He was captured on Roanoke Island by Burnside's troops and later paroled. Not sure why he would then be in a Yankee outfit. His parents had moved to MO from what is now WV but he returned to VA(WV) to enlist in 1861.

I wish there were more books with identified soliders groups as I'm sure they are somewhere as it was a very photographed war. Thank you, John Moller

My Ancestor in the 1st MSM Cavalry lst Sgt. John Barkley - co E
What I would like added to this site photos of soldiers of regiment
Comments:
Great Website --
My great grandfather, John Barkley, and two brothers enlisted from Albany, MO in March 1862. John served as
lst Sgt. througout the three years of enlistment. His brother, Frances (Frank) became a 2nd Lt. - co E.
I am involved with the Mine Creek Battlefield - Pleasanton, KS. We are very aware of the importance of the lst Cav, MSM in that battle. We should all be very proud of this regiment - and especially their fighting at
Westport and Mine Creek. The union charge at Mine Creek -
apx. 4,500 men - was one of the largest cavalry charges of the war and certainly one of the most successful.
We have brochure and booklet on the battle and the Price
'64 campaign. Anyone with letters, a diary, or certainly photos of soldiers in the lst MSM or 7th or the 4th - please let us know.

My Intrest in the 1st MSM Cavalry Finding information on Company "K"
My Ancestor in the 1st MSM Cavalry Moses Pierce
Comments:
I have discovered my great grandfathers discharge papers in my grandmothers bible. His nane was Moses Pierce, 3rd Sargent of Captain Henry F Peery's Company K, 1st Cav. Regiment of MSM. He was enrolled on the 4th day of April 1862 and discharged January 13, 1863 by reason of Surgen's Certificate of disability. He died shortly after his discharge which leads me to guess it may have been due to wounds suffered while in service. Any information you might be able to direct me to reguarding Company K would be greatly appreciated....... Thank You

I was so thrilled to find your site and actually see my Great Great Grandfather's name in the roster. I was told by my Father's cousin that his Mother had told him when they were girls "Grandpa" would give them a nickle a piece when they visited. Thomas said it was from his "government money from the civil war"... And thanks to you, I can document this information.

My gg grandfather, David P. Meek of Dekalb county, has gotta be the one I found here. His rank was Farrier, and I know he owned a livery stable after the war. Also, Green B Atterbury, also Co. H, ran "Meek & Attbury" after the war, it's gotta be him. Thanks so much for this site!!

My Intrest in the 1st MSM Cavalry Historical/Personal
My Ancestor in the 1st MSM Cavalry David Culp
Comments:
The state archives, or the Mo. National Guard, still have the records of many of these men. They don't contain much information on each, eg David Culp's sheet simply shows date of induction, "...on detached service chasing Quantrill..." a discharge date and balance of allowance or deficit. It might be worth seeing what the state has on each of these gentlemen.

My Ancestor in the 1st MSM Cavalry Ezekiel H. Shelton
Comments:
Although corporal Ezekiel H. Shelton (my 3rd great-grandfather, of Company D from Putnam County, claimed he was 45 years old at enlistment, he received an early disablity discharge because he was actually 55 years old. My father's older brother still owns and operates the 200 or so acres remaining of The Shelton and Sons Walnut Grove farm, located just east of Unionville, that Ezekiel H. Shelton obtained by land grant in 1854.

What I would like added to this site All References To 1st MSM In Official Records War of the Rebellion.
Comments:
Great site! I keep checking back. Reside in area of operations for lst MSM. Major Henry Neill, lst MSM, was my late Grandfather Mahlon Neill White's grandfather. Major Neill is buried in Warrensburg, Mo. He was raised in Lexington, Mo. Became attorney in Warrensburg after the war. Died in 1890's. His next door neighbor in warrensburg was Maj. Gen. Cockrell of CSA. Major Neill's best man at his wedding to his second wife (first died) was Lt. Col. Thomas Crittenden of 7th MSM, in Pittsburg, PA. MG Cockrell and Lt. Col. Crittenden were law partners in Warrensburg. Maj. Neill was City Attorney for Warrensburg and maintained his own law practice. Thank you for preserving the memory of the lst MSM who, if they had worn gray, would be as famous as the men they fought, including MG Sterling Price, Captain Quantrill, Captain Anderson, Capt. Todd and MG Jo Shelby.
