I love reading the history and so many Joseph Workmans. We are now living in Mechanicsburg, Pa and I thought I would do some research, but where to start? Talking about afte, I have been looking to purchase property,I love the area in and around Washington township in York County. We have looked at other property, but keep coming back to Washington Twsp or maybe I want to! I would love to get acquainted with a few long distance relatives. Funny, when we are younger, I did not care, but I cannot say that now. My grandfather, Alton Workman past away last October 30, he would have been a 100 on November 26, 2008. He past on and I was blessed with a grandson November 24, 2008, Carter Alexander Watson. By the way his (Alton) wife Runa (Runy) was a Workman, her father was Oscar Lenoz Workman. Thank you, Sharon

Name: Sam Painter <spainter@nexsenpruet.com>

Comments:
I am one of over 10,000+ Heck descendants.

Did you ever hear the tales about Daniel Heck? He was said to have been recruited as a 17 year old farm boy to row Washington's boat across the Deleware prior to the battle of Trenton. If true, he is on the back of the New Jersey quarter. His mother kept him home to tend their farm for the next 4 or 5 years, but then he left for the war. He arrived at Yorktown with his regiment from Maryland just in time to witness the surrender. His son is interesting, too. Daniel David served in the War of 1812. Later he became the innkeeper at the Natural Bridge Inn. He was a rifle maker, and made one of Daniel Boone's rifles. He was also a personal friend of Andrew Jackson's. When Andrew Jackson would journey from the Hermitage, his home in Tennessee, to Washington, DC, he would stay at the Natural Bridge Inn. There he and his friend Daniel David would sit up to all hours of the night telling stories and drinking whiskey.

My connection to the Hecks comes through my mother, Laura Lackey Painter. Her mother was Mary Ann Padgett Lackey. Mary Ann Padgett Lackey's mother was Rachel Heck.

There is an extensive history of the Heck family [I believe it is in 7 volumes] that was prepared by a retired college professor. If you are interested in it, I could probably find you more information. There is a picture of Mary Ann Padgett Lackey and a story about her in the History of Rockbridge County. It is a fascinating tale about how as a 16 year old girl she outsmarted a group of Union Army soldiers by convincing them that her family's horse was "crazy". The horse was used to plow both their fields and their neighbors' fields for years to come.

My gggrandfather was Walter C Crampton son of Sarah Crampton. Sarah (age 32) and Walter (age one) were living in Salem on the 1860 census. Father Crampton (first name unknown)was not there and I do not know why - divorce? Death? Anyway, Sarah Crampton went on to marry Joseph Thacker and they raised Walter together. I am pretty sure Sarah was born Sarah Crew, one of 14 children of Walter and Sarah Crew. They were Quakers living in Salem. I am trying to find who Sarah had baby Walter with. There were some Crampton's that were Salem Quakers - maybe one of them. Still looking. Have any ideas? Kathy

Name: James Christopher Erskine <erskine@sti.net>
Date: 2009-01-11
Comments:
According to Bonnie's book, my earliest known ancestor would be the person you are talking about as the link to the family back in Ireland/Scotland. I met Bonnie last summer and many other relatives from the Erskine family. Her brother James, who passed away two years ago, was very interested in geneaology. He went to Scotland and met the present Earl of Mar and Kellie, a man named James Erskine.
Another interesting is the one about an Erskine "lady" who moved to Munich and married a German noble, which result in a branch of the family there somehow. I have been in touch with a Michael Erskine in Germany, who filled me in on that.
Well, please feel free to contact me. I would love to know if found hard positive evidence tracing Bonnie's Erskine family back to Scotland.

Pleasant, Iowa and was born April 17, 1940...Son of Joseph Edwin Leeper, born in Noble, Iowa (1890-1979) and grandson of William Leeper, Noble, Iowa (died 1930..before I was born) Also grandson of James Leeper, Methodist minister and founder of Center Methodist Church, rural church 4 miles east of Wayland, Iowa (now preserved at the Old Settlers Grounds, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa). Dad said we are of Scot-Irish ancestry. Leepers in Henry county came from Zanesville, Ohio area in the 1840 to 1850 timeframe.

My Earliest Know Ancestor: Vincent Runyon
Comments:
I have just discovered that I am descended from Vincent Runyon through my Mother's U.E. Loyalist ancestry. My Montreal Charron ancestors, from Meaux , were members of the very first protestant group in France - although, to come to Montreal in the mid 17C Pierre Charron converted back to Catholic. We are now discovering that many of the first 17C settlers of New France were from protestant families. Many, too, had close relatives who went to Britain or to British colonies. Thank you very much for posting your Runyon family information, (your distant cousin) Michael Charron Plante, from Montreal

I was so thrilled to find the info about Farlow....we lived in the farmhouse closest to it in the late 50's and 60's. Clarence Reid traded property with Mr. Callaway and rented us the house. Many times did we walk thru it to fish in the large pond beyond. At that time there was a fence and gate to the cemetery. I remember the day a funeral procession came up the lane for a burial, I am presuming it was 1967 for Dolly Warren. My daughter was 12 at the time and she was so thrilled to see the activity there. In all the years we lived there I believe it was the only one. I am presuming we lived there about 12 yrs. Clarence sold the farm to J. Lehman who had bought the Calloway farm earlier. Jerald was the one who removed the fence and gate to the cemetery and hard telling what he covered up there with he machinery. So glad to see something being done to restore old cemeteries, allot of hard work.

My wife & I are Custodians of the Records for the Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends. We started about 1996. Many queries asked for burial location of ancestors. The local Meetings kept the records so I started making a collection for the Vault here in Oskaloosa. I also made a Data Base. I now have 77 cemeteries and about 28,000 records. Always looking for more.
We do not have internet at home so go to library. Also not real computer smart so I was glad to learn about the IowaGen Web. By reading your entries was able to locate 3 more cemeteries that I don't have. I know I will never find them all, but keep looking.

What a fantastic site you have here. I am very impressed and wish to thank you for the work that you put into it.

My ancestors are Joseph Mark, Joseph Junior, Peter Mark, Abner Mark, Allen Latham Mark, Jesse L. Mark and Eugene Latham Mark.

I too have a copy of Emma Mark’s book, The Mark Family History. The book that my family has was typewritten in landscape format and not bound. I recently reorganized and re-wrote Emma’s book and have published it in a hardbound, paperback and CD edition. The information from her book is still contained within the new book, but I have added some information to put historical events into context. I have also added a few names to the seventh and eighth generations of the Mark line and some to the Houk line. I would like to hear from anyone interested in, or with information related to individuals in the book. My website (see above) has information about the book and a complete index of names included within the book.

Thanks again for your efforts in making this site. We all appreciate it.

I have just begun to explore your website. Thank you for all your work. The photos help me to visualize your area of Iowa. I live in Maryland and my parents are from Washington State and Virginia. My husband is from Texas by way of Ill., Va and Massachusetts. I discovered that my great-grandfather John Hobson is the brother of George "Arnett" Hobson. He was married to Abigail Draper and I believe Irene Draper was living with them just before she died in 1911. I have a cute 1890's photo of "Arnett" and Abbie's three children. The photo once belonged to Laura Hobson, George Arnett's niece. I am newly discovering this Quaker line. I am unfamiliar with the Iowa area of Jefferson, Keokuk and Henry Counties. John was the son of Enos Hobson and Mary Agnes Moorman. I am hoping to learn more about this line of the family. John Hobson eventually moved to the Spokane area of Washington state. He had a homestead in Stevens Co. He died in 1944 and is buried in the Spokane, Wash. area. Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

I'm descended from Sarah Maxwell, the wife of William Phillips. What great information about the Maxwell family! I've learned a bit about them from the Washington, County, Kentucky Pioneer History book, but I had no idea they were originally from Ireland; also I knew little about the family in Virginia. How exciting! Thanks so much for sharing your information.

Please visit my web site and see if you think your William MAXWELL (#20) is the father of my earliest known ancestor. In my data, I have the same birth date you have for my William MAXWELL, but it's based solely on oral history. I haven’t been able to ascertain definitively the ancestry of the MAXWELL line before Isaac. Isaac was born in Alabama, but I think his father migrated there from VA.

Also, have you participated in any DNA studies (e.g., FamilyTreeDNA)?

Ken Norman

Comments:
Hi Jean, somehow we fell out of touch, I have the SPAM filter setting all the way up on my email, so "Willmuth Genealogy" in the subject line will help me recognize legitimate email from you. I hope the picture of Sarah (Sadie) Willmuth was useful to you. I am hoping my aunt in Kansas might have saved more family pictures I do not have good copies of from my Grandmother Sadie (Van Winkle) Oden.
My goal is to get all my family lines compete to before 1800, I am about 50 ancestors short of this goal.

To paraphrase a line by Col. Flagg in the TV seires M*A*S*H "All it takes it the right person who knows where to dig!" May you be that right person! You have done very well so far.

Name: Carol A. Hodgson <bearcataz@yahoo.com>
Date: 2005-01-15
My surnames are: Hodgson
My Earliest Know Ancestor: George Hodgson
Comments:
My great grandfather was Zimri Hodgson, Livingston County Illinois. He was co-author of a family genealogy tracing our Hodgson family back to George Hodgson, orphaned from the boat and resided in Pennslvania before going to North Carolina.
We have family letters from our ancesters who left NC and settled northeast of Cincinnati in Washington County area but then moved on to Lynn, Indiana before going to Pekin, Illinois for awhile and then to Livingston County Illinois. Some family members of Zimri moved on to Iowa as we have other old family letters from them. A son of the Iowa contingent went to Missouri and started the Hodgson Mill. We have a letter documenting that.

I'm just learning that there are other versions tracing the Hodgson family back to Robert Hodgson c)1540. Am finding this all very interesting and your records are helpful. Thank you for sharing them here.

Jean-

I am a descendant of James Maxwell and recently made a trip
to Tazewell. It was fascinating, but was working mainly
on my Peery and Whitley and Witten lines this trip.

Need to know lots more on my Maxwells.

David and Margaret (Maxwell) Whitley were one set of my
great great great great grandparents. My lineage back to them is me, my dad Lloyd D. Peery, his dad Reece Carl Peery,
his mom Sarah Frances (Fannie) Whitley, her dad Reese B. Whitley, his dad James Whitley, and his dad and mom David
and Margaret Maxwell Whitley.

I have already found 17 different lineages from Tazewell that I directly descend from on both my dad and Mom's side
of the family. My mom is a descendant of the Brooks family
of Tazewell and their related families.

Lets share info.

Am looking for the grave of his wife Lydia who died around 1856, possibly in childbirth. They lived in Salem from 1850 until at least 1862. Lydia had a sister living with them named Catherine Howe and they had two daughters Mary & Marie. Can't find them after 1860 when Lydia is absent in the census. He was in the Civil War under Salem.

a sizable clump of VanWinkles in the Henry County Ia area,
as well as Northern Wisconsin who are descendants of Sarah
and Albert. My Grandmother is Sadie (Sarah) Ellen VanWinkle.
There is a very extensive VanWinkle Genealogy published in
the mid 1980's as well as 2 supplements. My Uncle, Walter John Oden Jr., died about a month ago in the Hospital at Hays, KS. There is an Obit in the "Hutchinson(KS)News" that
should be acessable on-line.

I am a great great great grand son of John W. and Sarah A. <Brown> McVey.

John W. McVey is a son of Reuben McVey and Elizabeth <Kennard> McVey of Marion Township, Morgan County OH. (Reuben was suppose to be a Quaker as was his father).
Elizabeth Kennard is the only child of the union between Eli Kennard and Catherine Michener. Catherine Michener parents are Mordecai and Sarah <Fischer> Michener. Thus, John W. McVey is a great grandson of Mordecai

Sarah A. Brown is the Daughter of Nathan and Elizabeth Brown. Nathan’s parents are Benjamin and Amy <Butler> Brown. Benjamin’s parents are Joseph and Elizabeth <Michener> Brown. Elizabeth Michener’s parents are Mordecai and Sarah <Fischer> Michener. Thus, Sarah A. Brown is the great-great-granddaughter of Mordecai.

Rueben and Elizabeth McVey’s daughter Rebecca married Levi Worstall. Levi’s parents are William and Ann <Thompson> Worstall. Ann Thompson’s parents are William and Catherine <Michener> Thompson. Catherine Michener’s parents are Mordecai and Sarah <Fischer> Michener. Thus, Levi and Rebecca are both grandchildren of Catherine Michener and great grandchildren of Mordecai Michener.

I am cannot express to you in words how grateful I am right now. I am a direct descendent of the Robert Hodgson referenced on your website that was born in 1540. However, until tonight when I happened to visit here, the earliest ancestor I was aware of on my mother's side was the George Hodgson born in 1701 you list. I am descended from him by eight generations. None of the documentation I have seen before was able to bridge the gap back to England, but thanks to you, I now am aware of another 161 years of my family's history and can trace back 13 generations.

Young Family Website: http://www.msnusers.com/YoungFamilyGenealogyGroup

Just thought I would mention this as it may be of help to some of those searching. The Young family name was Lamont and because they were in opposition to the ruling government and were involved in the Jaboite Uprising were considered outlaws and choose to change there name. It is my understanding many did this when they left Scotland and Ireland hoping to prevent the law finding them after they relocated.

Enjoyed your site and the information you provided about the Quakers in Iowa. I am researching my Conner/Davis family and have reason to believe that they were associated with the Quakers of southeast Iowa in the late 1830's and the 1840's. They removed to Oregon in 1852 but I am still trying to locate information about them during their years in Iowa. Would anyone be able to help me to confirm some of my ideas about these families? My Grandfather Lindsey John Smith had a farm in the Cedar Rapids area. His father was Harmon Smith of Tompkinsville KY. The family came from English Quaker stock and dates back to the time of George Fox. They seem to have migrated from NY to NJ, to OH to KY and later to IA. I wonder if there is any record of Lindsey John Smith, his wife Minnie Gertrude (Dilcher) Smith or one of their sons Merle Smith, who died in WWII and is buried in IA.
