I have two photographs of Lizzy and Daniel Whitener/Whitner taken in the 1960s. They lived in Cherrylog. Lizzy was my grandmother's stepmother. My grandmother was Esther Mary Jane Long married to Grady A. Farmer. I would like to find out more about Daniel and Lizzy (don't know her maiden name. Just know she was married to a Long before marrying Daniel). I understand that Daniel and his brothers worked for Lockheed in Marietta, Ga at one time. They did repairwork/maintenance on the wings of the airplanes. If anyone has information on Daniel or Lizzy I would appreciate it. Thanks, Rachel Wolf P.S. I think Daniel may have died March of 1967 and was still living in Cherrylog at the time.

What area of the county were they in? Gilmer
Comments:
Greetings from the Prairielands
I am looking for information on John A. and Mary F. (CHANDLER) ADAMS. John was born in 1817 in South Carolina and at some point in time, moved to Gilmer Co. and married Mary CHANDLER in 1848. Mary was born in Georgia. The 1850 U.S. Census has them living in Gilmer Co. with a young son, James H. and John's sister, Elizabth. It appears that they lived and farmed in the Cartecay Township. The 1880 U.S. Census shows that they had nine sons, James, John, William, Bethel, Marshall, Louis, Robert, Chapel, Thomas and one daughter, Mary. Louis is my g-grandfather and he was married to Laura BATES until her death and then married Nancy J. HOLDEN. I need to find the parents of John A. ADAMS so I can continue the ADAMS lineage. I would appreciate any information on any of the individuals listed above. I thank you for your time,
Greg Adams

What surname are you searching for? Lawing
What area of the county were they in? Ellijay & Cartecay
What years were they there? ~1850 - 1900
Comments:
I am looking for a connection between a Lawing family that resided in the Gilmer Co., Georgia area during the reconstruction era (~1870s - 1900) and their North Carolina roots. The difficulty is in making a solid connection between my great, great grandfather who was born in NC and any of the Lawings in NC (Mecklenburg, Lincoln, or Gaston.)

I am a descendent of "John William Lawing" b. 29 Feb 1856 in Ellijay, Gilmer Co., Georgia. His father was listed as "J C Lawing" and his mother listed as "Mary M Lawing" in the 1870 US Census (Gilmer Co. GA), both age 48 according to the census, placing their birth dates sometime in 1822.. I have also found a record of a marriage between a "John A Lawing" and "Mary M Sims", 3 March, 1853.

I believe that the connection lies in the Mecklenburg County Lawings. However, I am not finding a "J C Lawing" or a "John A Lawing" anywhere in North Carolina prior to 1870. I I suspect they were the 'poorer' cousins. ;-)

If any of this rings a bell for you in your research of Gilmer County 0I would be happy to provide you with the information I have regarding the descendents of "John William Lawing" and his siblings. (An interesting bunch.)

Yours Truly,

Grant Miller, 206-407-3061

What surname are you searching for? Bradford
What area of the county were they in? Not Sure
What years were they there? The 1860 US Census Roll 124, Book 1, Page 51 shows them there
Comments:
Giles Bradford was my great grandfather. The 1860 US Census for Gilmer, GA shows him to be 45 years old and married to Nancy C Bradford (Maiden name Nancy Caroline Underwood.) Giles and Caroline had three children at the time of the 1860 Census. Their names were Joseph M, Florida M, and Kansas. Kansas Bradford later married Felix Elmore and became my grandmother. There is also a Joseph Bradford Family listed in the 1860 Census. I am wondering if he may have been the brother of Giles Bradford.

The Giles Bradford family left GA in the 1860's and moved to TN. I have been searching for the name and any information of his father. I have been told he was born in SC and the information on the 1870 US Census of Putnam County, TN indicated this.

I would appreciate any information you may have on Giles and other Bradfords. Joe Elmore, jthedrifter@yahoo.com

What area of the county were they in? Ellija
What years were they there? 1860-1910
Comments:
I am looking for any additional information someone might have on my great great grandparents, Stephen Paton Smith (Sr.) and his wife, Elizabeth Lyons Smith.

Starting in 1860 the census has them in Ellija, Gilmer Co., Ga. They had at least five children, that we know of, Cordella, Robinson, William Caswell, James Sterling and Stephen Paton, Jr.

The census shows Stephen Sr. was a farmer; the value of his real estate was $300.00 and personal property at $75.00. This was the census of 1860.

They were in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census. However, in the 1910 census only Elizabeth was found at the house with a daugther, Martha Smith.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Searching for information on John Henry Mulkey born 1853 in Gilmer County, GA. He married Cornelia Elizabeth "Nealy" Wallace in 1878 in Dade Co., GA. They had one living child, Malinda "Lindy" Mulkey, born April 1, 1885 in Dade Co., GA. She married Thomas Lafayett Daniel of Dade Co. in 1901 and had 12 children, on of which was my grandmother, Viola Daniel Breedlove. Family lore had it that John Henry was adopted by Mulkeys and that his mother was a Wooten. I have found a John H. Wooten, age 7 living with James and Lucinda Suddith and son, George (age is blank) in Gilmer Co. in 1860 and in 1870 there is a John H. Mulkey age 16 living with John and Elizabeth Mulkey along with a George Suddith age 12. They are listed out of age order with the rest of the Mulkey children and I hope this is my John Henry Mulkey. Any information that could help me connect him as my John Henry would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Cindy Dicken

What surname are you searching for? Chadwick
What area of the county were they in? Cartecay

Comments:
James Chadwick married Louvina Avaline Cantrell Nov.12, 1857. They appear on the 1850 census and the 1880 census taken at Ridgeway in Gilmer County and are buried at the Pettit family private cemetary. Their headstones are hand-inscribed and Avaline is spelled with an E according to the information I have. It shows her as being born Aug.1840, but the date of death is unreadable. James shows his demise in 1919, but other details unreadable. They are my great-great grandparents.
David F. Chadwick and his wife, Sarah E. Chadwick, my great grandparents, resided for a time in Blairsville. I do not have much on them but have the names of nine of their children.
Gordon Chadwick and his wife, Bessie Martin Chadwick, are both buried somewhere in Gilmer County and are my grandparents. They died within a year or so of each other in 1958-59 and I would appreciate any information on where they may be buried.
Also, I would be interested in contacting any relatives still residing in Gilmer County or anyone who may have known the Chadwicks.
Thank you.

My ancestors lived in Gilmer County from approximately 1833 to the early 1850's, when they removed to AL. The principal name of interest to me is Manoah Stephens, who came to Gilmer County from Habersham County. His wife was Elizabeth Chandler. They had a number of children, named Benjamin, Jeptha, John (or Jehu), and at least one daughter.

We have some information on them, such as a listing on the 1840 census. Anything you can share about this family would be very much appreciated.

Looking for information of Newman Osborn, born 9 Feb 1791 in Rutherford Co, NC and married to (first) Elizabeth Justice, and (second) Judith Harris. He died 1 Sept 1823 and is buried in Glenn Cemetery in Glen Rose, Texas. Newman was the son of Johnn Osborn and Jane Claypoole. He had brothers Jeremiah (born 1802), John, (born 1804), Nicholas (born 1806) and Jonathan (born 1809). He had sisters Margaret (born 1792), Sarah (born 1794), Eleanor (born 1798), Anne (born 1811) and Jane (born 1813). He moved to Texas in the 1850's (around 1855). He fled after killing his Negro slave, George. A warrant was issued for his arrest. He was never brought back to Ga for trial. He died in Texas. I am interested in why a warrant was issued for his arrest, considering that in 1855, slaves were not considered anything but property. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

What surname are you searching for? ROBERTS, STANDRIDGE, PENCE----- AKINS, CANTRELL
What area of the county were they in? Southern
What years were they there? 1850+
Comments:
Jacob CANTRELL b. 1780 arrived from Old Buncombe Co., NC shortly before the 1850 census. He was joined by his married dtr, Melinda Jane CANTRELL-AKINS, and her husband, Ezekiel AKINS b.1810 who came from Union Co., GA. Jacob was a Preacher and later served at the Goshen Church in present-day Dawson Co. They lived in the area of Gilmer Co. that later on was in Lumpkin then Dawson Co., GA by 1857. Ezekiel AKINS family lived along the present-day Gilmer-Pickens Co. line on Akins Mountain, Pickens Co., GA.

Elisha ROBERTS and his wife, Alethia Cline STANDRIDGE-ROBERTS, came to Gilmer Co. in 1849 from Cherokee Co., NC along with her parents John Bailus & Sarah STANDRIDGE. There was no apparent reason for this move to Gilmer Co. as Elisha & Alethia ROBERTS were back in Cherokee Co., NC by 1854...then in Ducktown/Isabella area of Polk Co., TN by 1860. Why did they go to Gilmer Co. ??? John Bailus Standridge had been in the Cherokee Co., NC area since before 1820.

There were several other ROBERTS families living nearby in 1850 Gilmer Co. but I can find no relationship between them and Elisha. However, several of Elisha's children married later on after 1860 back in Gilmer Co. to the PENCE family. Elisha's grand-daughter, Lillie ROBERTS m. Samuel PENCE in 1904 Polk Co. TN. Can't find Sam PENCE's parents.

Elisha ROBERTS b. bef 1810 died in the Civil War or was killed by Bushwackers. Family stories say he was buried back in GA..where??? He isn't buried next to his wife in Ducktown Cem. Polk Co., TN. I find no record of Elisha's wife ever filing for a Conf. pension.

THANKS!!!
C.A.T.
