From ALL OF THE ABOVE II, pp. 224, f.

. . .
In 1746, the sheriff of Lunenburg County ordered the convening of a meeting to select vestrymen for Cumberland Parish. At its founding in 1742 and for some years following, Lunenburg County (Cumberland Parish) was an enormous territory, composed of what later became Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry and Franklin Counties as well as most of the area of Bedford and Campbell counties. . . .
In 1751, the homes of Mark Cole and Joseph and Mary Owens Rentfro on the Blackwater River were authorized for Sunday worship, for the benefit of neighbors near enough to attend. William Cook being a likely young man, is found enrolled in the Cumberland Parish Vestry Book as a reader at these locations. . . .
William and Margaret Cook’s first home after their marriage appears to have been in the southern reaches of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in what is now (since 1785) Franklin County but what was then still part of old Lunenburg County. This county is most noted today as the location of a resort, “Mountain Lake.ö The Cooks lived along a trace called Fox Run on the Blackwater River. William was enrolled as a resident of this area in 1755. In 1765, as a propertied male, he voted in the Burgess election in Halifax County, also formed out of old Lunenburg.
William Cook actively bought and sold land. Between 1752 and 1765 he was involved in land transactions (“entriesö) in Pittsylvania County. In 1760, he received a 400 acre grant along the Blackwater River. In 1767 he bought 210 acres on the Pigg River. At about that same time, he and Margaret may have moved closer to Rocky Mount, VA, relocating to the Pigg River at Hatchet Creek, probably on his new Franklin County lands. In 1769 Margaret and William are residents of Pittsylvania County, when they sold some land to Peter Vardeman. (One wonders if William and Margaret moved or if the jurisdiction simply got a new name.) In 1767, the tax rolls (List of Tithables) of Pittsylvania County, VA included Robert Jones Sr and Jr, John Jones, Joseph Rentfro and William Cook.
Family Historian Merlyn Cook, in his unpublished (but widely circulated) history, Our Family, has helped to clarify the confusing nomenclature of Virginia counties in the 18th century. Basically, larger jurisdictions were subdivided as the population grew. Over time, people conducted legal business in different courthouses and clerks’ offices without ever having moved.

What actually happened came about because the population was expanding and moving to the west. As this happened, large areas that had been sparsely populated were split to make additional counties. If you happened to be in the western half of the county (and the Cooks always were) you found yourself in a new county with a new county seat, even though you had not moved. The specific details of the splits from the earliest days of the colony may illustrate how the Cooks and many other families moved westward in Virginia, following the expanding frontier. Back in 1634 Virginia was first organized in shires or counties. The eight organized then were more or less the same as eight large plantations which had been acting as centers of government since 1619. From two of those original eight counties, Charles City and Isle of Wight (originally called by the Indian name, Warrosquyozke) Prince George County was formed in 1702. In 1720 an act was passed in the House of Burgesses to split off Brunswick from the western part of Prince George. But the territory didn’t develop as fast as expected, so it was really 1732 before a county government was set up for Brunswick. Later in 1746, Brunswick was split to form the county of Lunenburg, which was still a large area. In fact, the original Lunenburg County, embraced all of the areas for present day counties of Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Halifax, Charlotte, Pittsylvania, Henry, Patrick and Franklin Counties. And it also comprised the major pats of what is now Bedford and Campbell Counties and a part of Appomattox. Further splits continued to take place so that in addition to Lunenburg, where William Cook and Margaret started their married life, they lived in Halifax from 1752, Pittsylvania from 1767, and Henry from 1777. Since Franklin County was formed shortly after they left Virginia, they usually in after years identified their place of abode in Virginia as Franklin.
. . .
William Cook (or perhaps Margaret alone) carried into Kentucky a letter of recommendation from their former neighbors. Descendent Merlyn Joseph Cook (1914-95) reproduced the letter, signed by William and Margaret’s many relatives and friends. The letter has been published on the web by descendent Charlie L. Cook (see Sources):
“HENRY CO., VA: This is to certify that William COOK has been a resident in this place for near thirty years; and has always behaved unblameable; and demeaned himself as a good citizen, Patriot, and friend, to his country and has faithfully Acted in the Civel department--and now being disposed to move to the Western Waters, we recommend him to the Inhabitants of that Country hoping he will meet with as warm a reception as the Merits of his Caracter Intitles him to.
Test Joseph Anthony Jno. Rentfro, J.P. Swinfield Hill, J.P. A. Hughes, J.P. Robt. Jones, Sen’r James Calloway, Cty. Lt. Peter Saunders, Col. Robt. Jones, Jun’r Campbell Co John Dillard, J. P. Thos. Jones, Jun’r Thos. Hale, Capt’n Sam’l Hairston Henry Jones Acquilla Greer Moses Greer, J. P. Jesse Heard, J. P. Jesse Rentfro, Thos Cooper, John Hall Abraham Penn, Col. William Hall
This letter became a treasured document to William and Margaret, who saw to its preservation by their descendents. They would have cherished every complimentary word and phrase. . . .
Perhaps in the late summer or fall of 1784, this letter was read aloud midst laughter and some tears, as William said his goodbyes to lifelong Virginia pals.
In 1788, Margaret Cook - “old Sister Cookö – as Baptist preacher William Hickman wrote of her in 1829 - presented nine of her children to him for baptism at the founding of the Forks of Elkhorn Church near present day Frankfort, KY.. . .
Did William Cook die before his wife and children moved into Kentucky? He is not mentioned in 1788, the year of the Elkhorn baptisms or as a member of the Baptist church. Margaret is a church member, as is a William, more likely her son. In 1790, Margaret Cook is assessed taxes in Woodford County but there is no mention of her husband. In 1791, back in Virginia, Margaret is invoked in a judicial proceeding as relinquishing her rights of dower in property sold by her and her husband prior to moving to Kentucky; again, there is no mention of William Cook. In 1792, ‘93 and ‘95, Margaret paid taxes in KY, presumably as head of household.
Margaret Cook died in 1797. In that year she signed her will and her estate was inventoried. The will was recorded by court order in February, 1798. No land was devised, which suggests that title to any owned by William and Margaret had been passed either by William’s will or by subsequent sales by Margaret or gifts made by her before her death. . . .

Name of Family Head and Wife: Achilles Terrell and Susannah Ford
Moved from Henry County, VA to: Jefferson Co, IN
Comments:
Achilles Terrell married Susannah Ford in Henry Co, VA 16 Apr 1812. But he was too young to show in the 1810 census of that county and apparently left before the 1820. However, the 1820 census of Jefferson Co, IN shows an Archilles (sic) Terrell and a Robert Ford living near each other. This 1820 census shows Achilles and another male at 26-45. He has 3 boys under 10, (presumably) a wife 16-26, and a girl under 10. The 1830 census of Jefferson Co, IN shows an Ekilles(sic) Terrell (in his 30s) near several Ford brothers who had been living near each other in Henry Co, KY. But note that Achilles' wife is apparently missing, the oldest females being 15-20 in age. So he may now be a widower. A couple of those Ford brothers, Robert and Jarret, married Terrell sisters, Jane (25 Sep 1805, Henry Co, KY) and Elizabeth (23 Apr 1798, Bourbon Co, KY), respectively. Other researchers are certain that these ladies are daughters of Robert Terrell (1751 - bef 1805) and Zeno Pope. This old Robert, in turn, is apparently the oldest son of Robert Terrell and Judith Towles. The "bef 1805" comes from the marriage papers of Jane Terrell and Robert Ford which indicates the father is deceased. The Robert who married Zeno Pope died at Smithland, Livingston Co, KY, according to other researchers. I have suggested that Achilles may very well have married a sister of those Ford brothers and that he himself was a son of this Robert Terrell. The Ford brothers were sons of Warner Ford and Cythia (or Cytha or Cynthia) Mellon (or Million). Warner, born abt 1750, died at an unknown date in Port Royal, Henry Co, KY. Cythia, b. 2 Apr 1753 in Stafford Co, VA, also died there abt 1775 before Warner went to KY. Warner Ford and Robert Terrell were apparently buddies together in the George Rogers Clark Illinois campaigns (there were also a couple of Popes) and it was natural that there children would intermarry after the war. So here I have shown several Ford families and a Terrell family leaving Henry Co, KY from just before 1820 and into the 1830s.

Captain John Edwards and his Wife Martha Johnston, Lead a group of 100 Henry County residents including children and negroes to Missouri in 1840. Ten Families moved out west from Henry county in this wagon train. Captain Edwards died one year after reaching Missouri. His Son Dr. Chiles Edwards was educated at UVA medical school and spent summers with my great -great Grandmother Joise Wells Johnston in Mountian Valley until he earned his medical degree.

I believe at least one Brother -in-law ( Johnston ) and one Basset went on this migration. In looking through a history of Missouri where I found this docuemented there were pictures of Bassets.

In My Mother's oral family history it has been passed down that one of Martha's Brother's and his Family went on this trip.

An interesting sidelight to this story. In The Civil War Dr. Edwards was a POW and was in New York treating other POWs in a prison. His first cousins ( Johnstons from Mountain Valley ) were in the same prison with him. They served in Company F of the 42nd that was captured or killed out-right at the battle of the bloody angle in Wilderness campaign.

My 3rd great grandfather was Henry Marsh. He was born in Amelia County,Virginia in 1761. After his first enlistment in the militia, he was discharged. This was 1778 or 1779. He went from his uncle's farm in Surry County, North Carolina to his mother's home in Henry County, Virginia. His father was probably dead. I wonder if there is a record of a Marsh family in Henry County around 1778/79.

Name of Family Head and Wife: Jefferson & Rena (Barker) Lemons
Moved from Henry County, VA to: Gasconade Co. MO
Comments:
Jefferson m. Rena Barker ca. 1821 in Henry Co. VA per Henry Co. marriage records. His father, John Lemons, Sr. (of Rockingham Co. NC.) died in 1810 when Jefferson was 10 yrs old.. The estate settlement records show where they were divided among him and his siblings. The 1815 tax records indicate that his older brother Alexander Lemons paid the land taxes for him and his other minor siblings on the land inherited from their father. It is believed that his mother,Tabitha, 2nd wife of John Lemons, Sr., possibility moved to Henry Co. shortly after 1815. Jefferson and Rena are found in the 1850 Henry Co. VA census, but Rena apparently died shortly after 1850. He is found with a new, younger wife in Gasconade Co. MO by the mid 1850s where he got land grants. He is in the 1860 Gasconade Co. MO censuses. I have a copy of the probate settlement in Gasconade Co. MO on his assets ca. 1864.

Washington (b. 1844KY), Nancy( b. 1847) and James Robert (b. 1848 KY) went to MO also. Son Peter (1831, VA) moved from Calloway Co KY to Stewart Co TN abt. 1852, married Elizabeth Rushing.

Moved from Henry County, VA to: 96 District, SC, betw. 1781-1784
Comments:
Unproved tradition places his birth in Charles County, MD, ca. 1730.

Published sources show him in Bromfield Parish and on the Robinson River, both in Culpeper County, VA, 1765 (possibly 1758) to 1770. He apparently leased land on the Smith River in 1775 or 1776 and paid taxes in Henry County until 1780 or 1781. Humphrey and sons were in what is now Greenville County, SC, by 1784. Humphrey and some sons left there for Wilkes )later Oglethorpe) County, GA, by 1787, but other sons stayed in SC until 1790 or later before moving to TN and KY in the early 1790's.

Name of Family Head and Wife: William and Elizabeth Warren
Moved from Henry County, VA to: Williamson County, TN - 1815
Comments:
William Warren was born around 1755 and died 1822 in Williamson County, Tennessee. William was marred to a woman named Elizabeth, who was born about the same time as her husband and died about 1837 in Williamson County, Tennessee. The Warren's had at least ten children, all of whom were named in William's will of 1822. Virginia seems to be the birthplace of each of the children, although we cannot say that with certainty. But, what is known, is the location of the marriages of each of the children - Henry County, VA, for the oldest eight and Tennessee for the youngest two. The marriage of their son Jesse (1813 in VA) and their son Burrell (1816 in TN) implies the family removed to Williamson County between the two dates. This is supported by a land deed of 54 acres to William Warren in August, 1815 and registered in December, 1815. The land connected with Isaac Neely's land.

Name of Family Head and Wife: John Q. Adams & Sarah Goode Crawford
Moved from Henry County, VA to: Boone Co., (W)Va by 1860
Comments:
John Quincy Adams and Sarah "Sally" Goode Crawford were married in Franklin Co., VA on 6 May 1839. Sarah was the daughter of David and Elizabeth (Waltz) Goode, and married first to Russell D.Crawford on 23 Sep 1824. John and Sarah are found in the 1850 census of Henry Co., Va, with eight children. They owned land in Henry and Franklin counties, living near Bassett, VA. The first three children were John's from a previous marriage possibly to Rebecca Martin in Halifax Co., VA. An older son was enumerated on a neighboring farm.
John and Sarah were named in a trust deed on 30 Jul 1856, recorded in the Henry Co., Court House in Deed book 15, page 160, valued at $800. The Adams family is next found in Boone Co., (W)Va in the 1860 census, Peytona Post Office. John and Sarah were both age 54, with the four youngest children living at home. Marriage of daughter Ruth was recorded in Boone Co., in Dec of 1860, and another daughter, Martha in Kanawha Co., WV in 1863. Some of the children of this family migrated on to the neighboring county of Lincoln, in WV. In the 1870 census of Lincoln Co., WV, there are records of two John and Sarah Adams. I believe one of them to be this John and Sarah Goode Crawford Adams. Living nearby were the married daughters, Mary Ann Goode and Martha Lucinda Harvey Tackett. No futher record has been found of John Q. Adams, and Sarah lived the last years of her life with son, Samuel Adams in Cabell Co., WV, and is buried in the same cemetery as her son Samuel in Cabell Co., WV.

This Rice family migrated with other area families, to the Smoky Mountains - Madison, Yancey, Buncombe counties, NC, and into east TN. William Rice (spouse unknown, maybe Cherokee) had 7 children, who married Keith, Roberts, Shelton, Wallen, and Ramsey individuals. William Rice died in Yancey County, NC, in 1835.
