I am researching my McCann branch - came to the US likely during the mid 1800s and settled in Newark. I am not sure where in Ireland they were originally from. My ggg-grandfather Michael (b. abt 1826) definitely came over mid- 1800s, as I know he married Sarah McDevitt in Newark, New Jersey in 1850. I know his father's name was Bartholomew, according to that record. He had five sons - Henry, Michael, James, Daniel and John. I am sure there were other relatives in Newark during that time period and after. Anyone else researching the same?

From my family family-name, the reason for my interest is obvious. Have been told (a great-aunt many years ago did a genealogy of the American side of the family) that our progenitor was a James McCann born in approx 1748 -- by my memory a physician and a non-partisan (never a protestant but a man who owned his own bible, is how I remember it) --who emigrated to Charlestown South Carolina in the late 1760s or early 1770s. Now I'm pretty old and with my wife recovering from cancer, have promised her a trip to Ireland, a life-long wish of her's. (Altho her family is traced back to France -- go figure!) And cannot avoid the usual American-Irishman's interest in my antecedants. So found this site.

Hello! God love ya and peace from Florida. Can't wait to visit in '13.

Any McCann's -- or anyone really! -- who'd like to respond to an interest such as mine, I check my e-mails every day. I'm at crazylucy38@yahoo.com.

Stephen McCann was a soldier in the Union Army, Company C, 89 Illinois US Inf. According to his military record he was a native of Ireland, born in 1828 and joined the army in Cook County, Chicago at 34 in 1862

I would appreciate any assistance in finding out more about his wife and children's names. I know he survived the war and was mustered out June 13, 1865.

He Married Margaret Withers, from County Sligo, Ireland, in May of 1869 at Saint Ann's Catholic Church at Edge Hill in West Derby, Lancashire. My branch of the family, that is my grandfather Henry Edward McCann, left Britain about 1888, eventually ending up in China.

Looking for information on Henry McCann and wife Mary Murphy. They lived in Carrickasticken, Forkhill in the 1880's. They had 4 children, Catherine, Mary Josephine, John and Bridget. Henry supposedly died in Liverpool, England in the late 1880s but proof of death never found. Daughters Catherine and Bridget also supposedly died before the end of the 1880s. Haven't been able to find a record of their deaths. Mary and John were found on the 1901 census in County Louth working for the James Toal family in Faughart,Dundalk. On the 1911 census Mary is now married to James Toal. Doed anyone know of this McCann or Toal family?

Thank you

I have a letter from a James McCann written to my mother Ella Johns in 1959. James was probably of similar age to her so would have been born around 1920 - 1930. He was living in Rathcoole having just left his job at Victoria Barracks in Belfast. They had a mutual friend Lily Scott and he had recently lost someone called Maggie. I would dearly love to trace anyone who knows/knew Jimmy or is related. I also have a picture which could be Jimmy. Please contact me if you can help in any way.

John Henry McCan, miller and farmer at Rathnally, near Trim, Co. Meath had 12 children. Wife was Catherine Feroni, born in Treviso Italy about 1790. John was born in Limerick in 1778. Children Henry Alexander b.1806, Ellen b.1807, Mary Anne b. 1809, John b. 1811, francis b. 1812, George b. 1814, Arthur b. 1815, Joseph b. 1816, Susanna b. 1817, Teresa b. 1819, Catherine b. 1821, William b. 1824. In 1830 John Henry was declared bankrupt and ended up with his family in The Four Courts Marshalsea (Debtors' Prison in Dublin). Henry Alexander had died at school in 1819, the family scattered around the world after that. The parents and Joseph ended up in Australia,
Francis and Arthur in Bordeaux, France, William was a gold-miner in Thames N.Z. George was drowned in the Ganges about 1870. Of the daughters I know nothing alas. I suspect they had gone too, no trace of any marriage in Ireland. Note the name MCCan, one n. though as often as not it ended up as McCann in official records. Anyone out there who can spot some clue in this information ?

My branch of the McCann's as far as I know came from Wisconsin and where here before the civil war where they faught on the side of the Union. Lost 2. Father was Neil Steve and Grandfather was Steve. Grandfather was a logger who moved to Montana for free land in the middle of wide open land with no trees at all for growing wheat. Figure that one out? 13 kids in the family worked the farm.

I'm looking for the descendents of my gr-gr-gr grandfather Thomas McCann. We think he was born in Ireland, place and date unknown. His wife was Bridget Dougherty, date and place of marriage unknown.

Son Hugh McCann was born in Brooklyn abt. 1827.
My gr-gr-grandmother was born in New Jersey abt 1829.
Daughter Margaret (later married Patrick McCarty) was born in New Jersey abt 1831.
Son Michael was born in New Jersey--R.C. baptismal record.
Daughter Isabell was born in New Jersey--R.C. Baptismal record.

Thomas shows up in Ohio, Columbiana county, in the 1840 census, and then disappears. I concluded that he probably died there, but we find no church or cemetery records.

The rest of the family, his widow, two sons, and three daughters moved on to Wisconsin--Brown Co. in the 1850 census and Outagamie Co. for the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses.

Am looking for connections. Mary

I am looking for any information on Mark McCann (farm labourer) married to Catherine McKee (date unknown) in Tartaraghan, Armagh, possibly Maghery in the 1860s. I have no information about their parents, their births, their marriage or their deaths (other than that Catherine was dead by the time of her son's (Francis) marriage in Glasgow in 1896). Mark appears to be present on the Primary Evaluation in Maghery, Armagh in 1864, there are also McKees mentioned in Maghery.

They had children including Isabella 1865, Catherine 1868 and Francis 1873 in Tartaraghan, possibly Maghery.

Francis was my great-grandfather. He moved to Glasgow and worked in the shipyards. He was killed at Gallipolli in 1915 whilst serving with the Royal Munster Fusiliers.

Francis married Margaret McTaggart in 1896 and had children John, Mark, Margaret McGlade, Sarah and Catherine McKee.

Any information would be welcome as I am new to research in Ireland.

Sean

All I know of Peter is that he died when he was 29 years old, is burried in a Breckenridge, Co. cemetery, worked for the American Smelting Company and came from Northern Ireland. I have determined his date of birth to be ~ 1859 and would love to find his and my McCann Irish family connection. I have a tin type (photo) of him. I love puzzels and this one is a doozey - trying to locate anything about him. If anyone has information, interest or knowledge about how to proceed please contact me. What a wonderful site! I have seen a lot of McCann's listed but still can't seem to connect with any.

My McCann's I am looking for are Edward and Susan Cummins McCann. They had at least 4 children. Margaret(b.1820) married John Thomas Whitfield. Ann(b.??)married a Ryan.
George(b. 1823)never married and Ellen(b.1831) married a
Masterson in the United States.

I think they all started from Co. Tyrone but not sure. The children came in a group to the U.S. in 1850 and lived in Pittsburg, Pa working as grocers. They moved to Chicago, then in the 1880 census they are living in Stuart, Ia.

What became of Mom and Dad, who are their parents and siblings?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Subject: FAMILY REUNION

Dear McCann, Gibney, and Ivory relatives:

Some eight years ago, I started working on my family's genealogy, mostly in order to answer some questions I had about my grandmother Corinne Holsapple York McCann. This research quickly exploded into a current database of 56,400+ names going back many centuries. However, the Irish ancestors go back only about two hundred years because there are very few Irish civic records for Irish Catholics in Ireland. In any case, my researches have led to the discovery of three principal branches: the McCann's and Gibney's of Castlepollard in Co. Westmeath and the Ivory's of Waterford in Co. Waterford. As I continued to gather names, I always thought it would be great to get all these related people together again, considering that most of us began to lose track of the others only after the 1930s. Hence, the idea of a family reunion. Soè

This is it, the official notification to all of the McCann-Ivory-Gibney relatives we can find. Some of us had been planning a relatively small, first-cousin reunion for this summer. However, the number of people involved very quickly grew. Now, we are planning the first, all-inclusive family reunion in any living person's memory. If you are a descendent of Thomas McCann (1795-1850) & Catherine Lynch (1795-1862) of Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland or of Cathrine's grandparents Phillip Gibney (1748-1806) & Bridget McDaniel of Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, Ireland or of John Ivory (1796-1855) & Mary Lyons (1796-1861) of Co. Waterford, Ireland - and you are if you are reading this - this reunion is for you.
¢ July 9, 2005 (Saturday)
¢ Route 83 and Kean Avenue in Palos Park, Illinois
¢ 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.
¢ Directions to: MC CANN/GIBNEY/IVORY FAMILY PICNIC (THERE IS A MAP ATTACHMENT; IF IT IS NOT VISIBLE TO YOU, LET ME KNOW, PLEASE.)

From the North take I-294 E to I-55 N. Get off at Rt. 45 (LaGrange) Southbound. Follow 45 south past 111th St. and take the Rt. 83 exit east. Kean Ave is the next street; make a right turn.

From the West take I-55 N. Get off at Rt. 45 (LaGrange) Southbound. Follow 45 south past 111th St. and take the Rat 83 exit east. Kean Ave is the next street; make a right turn.

From the South or Southeast take I-57 S to I-80 W. Get off at Rat 45 (LaGrange Rd) and go north. You can make a right turn on 119th or go to Rt. 83 and take the east exit. From 119th go east to Kean Ave. and make a left turn - about _ mile to grove. From Rat 83 go to Kean (2 blocks) and make a right.

From the East take 87th, 95th, 111th, or 143rd to La Grange (Rat 45). Stay on La Grange to Rat 83 and take it east to Kean Ave. Make a right on Kean and you're there.

Cell phone contact that day will be Don Januszyk 1-708-259-2905 or Pat McCann 214-801-0340

No glass containers are allowed on the picnic ground. All other beverages are allowed. No food or beverages will be served at the picnic. There is a shelter and a portable rest station on the grounds. You may want to bring your own table and chairs. There are a limited number of picnic tables at the grove. There are plenty of trees and an open area for ball playing. Park legally or the forest preserve will ticket you.

After my last letter of February 26, we had some rethinking and re-figuring to do. Thank you to my brother-in-law Don Januszyk, and two second cousins, Annie McGowan and her sister Linda Selwierak for settling on the site. This forest preserve has room for 300 persons, a shelter, and the usual tables and porta-potties. Since it is a picnic, bring everything you can think of that is appropriate for such an event, that is, folding tables, chairs, food & drink, coolers, sports equipment, supplies for children's games, etc. There are plenty of trees for shade, but suntan lotion and mosquito repellent are good ideas as well. Many of you McCann's have a lot of experience running kids' games and that sort of thing. Can I count on you all to do the same for this event? Please.
¢ Since it is a family reunion, please notify everyone whose name/address you don't see on the attached list, which is a list of everyone I know of who is still alive and a descendent of one of the three couples I mentioned above. A missing name/address means I have no way to contact the person; perhaps you do.
¢ Please let me know whether you plan to attend; if so, with how many people.
¢ If you cannot attend, please let me know that as well at one of the addresses below so that we do not overplan.
¢ Finally, please consider sending updated data and photos of your family members. I would like to have a huge family tree available on CD or DVD in July. I have been working on it for a long time and am still not finished. I will also have a PowerPoint slide show available, and if I have the time, I will begin writing a history of the three families, probably also on CD since the text copy of just the data comes to over 400 pages, without any photos or narrative.
¢ You received this email because I have an email address for you. If you know of other email addresses that you don't see above, please let me. It would save tremendously on postage.

Finally, just in case you are having difficulty placing me in the family, my parents were Patrick J. McCann, III (sometimes called "Joe) and Maybelle Ponsetto. My grandparents were Patrick J. McCann, II (sometimes called "Mac") and Corinne Holsapple. My great-grandparents were Patrick J. McCann (sometimes called Patsy) and Katherine Agnes Mary Ivory (sometimes called "Kitty"). Patrick's parents were James McCann and Cathrine Gibney (of Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath), and Katherine Ivory's parents were William Ivory (of Quebec or New York) and Ellen Corcoran (of Ireland).
You can reach me at the following addresses:

He married Helen O'Connor (or Connors they used both) and had six daughters and two sons. Daughters names were:
Mary Agnes Mc Cann
Lillian Mc Cann
Helen Mc Cann
Florence Mc Cann
Martha Mc Cann
Grace Mc Cann
Sons were:
John
James

My grandmother told me that her father was raised by an Italian man named Giovani or Giordano, as his father died when he was young. His mother was Amelia Somers and although he was born in Ireland, his mother hailed from Boston MA.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Research Objective: Establish the McCann family’s Canadian immigration date, their port of entry, and their Canadian residence while attempting to ascertain parental and sibling vital statistics.

Name: William John McCann
Birth Date & Place: 5 Feb 1838, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Marriage Date & Place: 3 Oct 1863, Gibraltar
Spouse’s Name: Una Dodd
Mother’s Name: Sarah C. Tiffney
Father’s Name: Owen McCann
Siblings: Unknown
Children: Sarah Una, William H., Arthur Charles, Clara, Robert James, George Alfred, Frederich Albert, Amy May, James A., & Frank Vyner
Place of Residence: Northern Ireland, Canada, England, Gibraltar, Malta, India, & Auburn, California
Other Information: We suspect the family emigrated to Canada during the Irish famine of the 1840s. Conclusive documentation shows that, on 27 May 1858, at age 20, Wm John McCann enlisted in the 100th of Foot Prince of Wales’s Royal Canadians at the regiment’s Toronto district office. Regimental headquarters was located in Quebec. Because he rose to the rank of Colour Sergeant within 3 years, we propose that McCann had prior military education or training in Canada. He served 30 years at world-wide postings until his retirement as honorary Captain to Auburn, California in 1888.

Thanks for the information. I am a novitate at geneology. I am looking for my paternal grandfather's family. My grandfather Franklin McCann was born in Harrisburg PA on Nov 27, 1877. His mother's name was Deborah. All we know is he was the eldest of 6 or 7 children and left his family at the age 0f 15 and joined the Merchant Marines. He ended up on the island of Guam, where he married a native, my paternal grandmother Rita. My father, Marvel Agoun McCann was born on July 13, 1919. I'm sure I have many relatives in the Pennsylvania area that are unknown to me.
Somewhere in my memory I hold Galway as the place of origin for my ancestors. I could be completely wrong.
What does is the translation for the Latin family motto?

Hello Dennis --
You've done a lot of work! I am trying to trace one of my grandmother's who emigrated from Ligoniel, Co. Antrim in 1912 to the state of Montana in the U.S. through Canada. Her name was Mary Ann GREEN. Her parents were HENRY GREEN originally from either Aghagallon or Aghalee Co. Antrim and JESSIE (LEECH-LEACH)GREEN from Randalstown, Co. Antrim. Henry and Jessie (aka Theresa) were married in 1894 in Ligoniel. My grandmother was born the same year.

Here's the MCCANN connection: Henry's parents are listed as JOHN GREEN AND MARGARET ANN (MCCANN) GREEN. There are listings both in Dublin and Belfast for Henry's birth --
DUBLIN - Henry Greene, b April 13, 1870
Derryclone, Aghalee, Lurgan, Co. Antrim
FATHER: John Green MOTHER: Margaret Ann McCann
BELFAST- Henry Green, March 13, 1870
Aghagallon, Ballinderry, Co. Antrim
FATHER: John Green MOTHER: Margaret Anne McCann
SPONSORS: John McVey, Mary Grant
Denomination: Roman Catholic
Henry is listed as illegitimate in both notices

That's as far as I've managed to get with that thread. However, my grandmother emigrated by herself and through family discussions, we think she had MCCANN aunt(s) already in Montana when she arrived.

1.
LENA CASEY (MERNIN, 1st Marriage) MCCANN
According to death certificate, she was:
Born: May 18, 1881
Belfast Ireland
Parents: Unknown MCCANN
She had been in the U.S. for 40 years when she died in 1944.
She was buried in Butte, Montana but had apparently been living with her second husband James Casey, in San Francisco for two years before her death on May 2, 1944.

According to records I found at the PRO in Belfast this year, I think I may have found her birth record:
LENA MCCANN, b. March 18 1882
Feumore, Aghalee, Lurgan
FATHER: John MCCANN MOTHER: Ellen (Hickland)MCCANN
Blacksmith
RECORD: #279, Aghalee, Lurgan, Book 6

Lena and Harry Mernin were listed as sponsors/witnesses on
my grandmother's marriage certificate in Butte, Montana on March 27, 1913.

2. AGNES (MCCANN) MULHOLLAND
According to her death certificate, she was born in 1872 in Ireland. At the time of her death in Butte, Montana, on February 27, 1942, she was listed as a widow. She was a housewife and had worked as a domestic.
PARENTS: PATRICK MCCANN MARY A. CANNY
Ireland Ireland

According to records I found at the PRO in Belfast this year, here's the best match I found:
AGNES MCCANN b October 17, 1872
28 Millfield Street, Belfast
PARENTS: PATRICK MCCANN CATHERINE(GRIBBEN)
Labourer
WITNESS: Isabella Brown (of the same address)
Record:#230 Belfast Urban #5, Book 13

Any chance you might have some information about any of the above, or their relations? I would certainly appreciate any!
And, should there be any connection, I'd be happy to provide any more information that I have.

My grandmother, Mary Ann Green, married Roy A. Callen in 1913 and her first born, Aranda R. Callen was my father. He passed away in 1980. I live outside Atlanta, Georgia in the U.S. but try to visit Montana as often as I can. I've been fortunate to have visited Ireland and Northern Ireland in the past few years and hope to return soon!

Thanks in advance and I've enjoye your maps!
All the best,
Mary Callen

My great grandmother was Sarah McCann, b. 1838, Northern Ireland. She married James McKinney, b. 1839, on May 21, 1862. The page from the Bible says married in County Antrim. A Mr. Anderson signed the Bible page and my cousins say they were Methodists. They came to USA @ 1870, with three children and her sister, Mary McCann. The death notice of my great uncle William McKinney said he was born in Belfast. Sarah's death certificate listed father just as Mr. McCann and mother, Mrs. Smith. This does not help to try to go back a generation. James McKinney's death certificate listed his father as Alexander McKinney and mother as Lily Berryman. Thanks for any info anyone may have, Margaret Comstock

His entry on 1881 Census gives only Ireland as a birthplace, and as a journeyman mason moving constantly, have been unable to trace him on 1851,61 or 71 censuses. John McCann's father was William McCann, also a bricklayer. I'm hoping the trade may ring a bell with another genealogist?

1. Robert1 Macan; born circa 1775 at Ireland; married unknown (--?--); died circa 1875 at Ballyhawly?, Ireland.

Children of Robert1 Macan and unknown (--?--) were as follows:
2 i. John2 Macan; born 12 Oct 1816.
+ 3 ii. James Macan, born circa 1820; married Ann Jane McWilliams.
+ 4 iii. Mary Ann McCann, born 9 Feb 1825 at Ireland (Married [bef 1851] Richard TEMPLE in Ireland and immigrated and lived with his family in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario in 1854 timeframe)

I am struggling to find the Irish home of my G Grandfather James Richard McCann and his father John Theophilus McCann who I know were both born in Ireland.
This website will really help in cutting down the size of a potential search for where they lived.
James Richard was born 1861 -1862 or thereabouts and his father was probably 20 or so years earlier. John Theophilus is a distinctive name which combined with the fact he was a gunmaker should allow him to be found.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate an email.

This is the point I have been at for a number of years now, have not been able to come up with anything else from anywhere. Oh well, maybe one day.

My grandmother was Dora A McCANN born 23 November 1878 in Iowa, her father was Robert C McCANN born 17 June 1848 in South Carolina and mother was unknown first name JAKEWAY (possibly Lydia) born in Iowa. Her grandfather was Robert McCANN born in SC and grandmother Frances FOWLER born in SC. I believe Dora had at least one sister named NORA and married a LARABEE. This is absolutely all I know and would like to find out more about this illusive family. Does anyone recognize any of these names?

My mother is a McCann. The oldest ancestor is George McCann who was in York, Pa. in the late 1700's and early 1800's. He married a Martha Griffith whose grandfather died in York in 1793. They are listed as Colonial Families of Hopewell Township York County Pennsylvania. We have no knowledge of whether they came from Ireland or Scotland or maybe the Griffiths from Wales. The families could have immigrated together. Is there early listings of McCann's and Griffiths leaving Northern Ireland during that period of time?. This is my first time on this site and I will come back and check all the information. Kaye

My father Cornelius Joseph McCann and mother Ellen Henry were both born (1910) in Newry, Co. Armagh. They both came to the US when they were about 19 and met here for the first time. They settled in Lynn, Ma and raised five terrific children: James, John, Owen, Mary and Catherine. My dad passed when he was 72, but my mother is still alive (91). Every once and a while I get the urge to look up the ancestry. Nice site! Owen

Hello. Interesting map. My ancestor Michael McCann, 1819-1889 came from Kilbeg, County Wicklow. He came to Canada with his wife, Julia nee Murphy. They settled in Lanark County, (1 hour's drive west of Ottawa- Canada's Capital). He and the next 3 generations worked in lumbering.

I haven't found any Irish relations. Michael's parents were John and Ellen McCann. I'd love to hear from any McCanns from Wicklow County.
