I am trying to find my grandparents who lived at 48 Coach Lane Hazelrigg Ponteland Northumberland in the year of 1912
My mother was born at that address in that year.
Unfortunately it is very expensive for myself to pay for the geanology sites, due to me living in South Africa and the exchange rate from SA to UK is so ridiculously high.
I am at present in UK staying with relatives and between us we are trying to place the family members together.
My grandfather was a coal hewer in the mines but everything else is so vague.
I have all names of my mothers brothers and they all lived in that area except my mother who left the area to marry my father in Nottinghamshire, they are now buried in Africa due to us leaving UK in the early 1960's to settle in Africa.
Sorry to enter this in your guest book but other sites have been so unhelpful.
If you could either advise me where to beable to find any geanology information free I would appreciate it very much, most of the sites need a subscription for this information, however years ago this was all free from Somerset House where everybodys records were kept.
I have a great passion for Northumberland with great interest of the mines and the communities during the early days when my grandparents lived there, I would like to know any information that you could give me on this area if possible.
I shall be on this email address until later next year.
Very best regards,
Susan Murray.

she married Jack (John)Brodie here in Australia in Mid 1920s he was born in middlesborough. He had 4 sisters, Lillian, Millicent, Sally and Elizabeth. I have not been able to contact any relations of these girls. I dont know their married names though one married Thomas Longmire. One of my gt or gt gt grandfathers supposed to have designed, help build and was killed on the swing bridge. Do you know who this may have been? I am visiting UK August this year and would be grateful for any info. Does the Newcastle Herald still get published in Newcastle? Is the address still Bolton Street.
Kind regards Trisch Brodie

p.s Thought you`d be interested- when the co-op (newgate street) was closing i went into the back rooms to collect
my purchases - it was like stepping back in time, how old the door archways and brickwork where compared to the rest of the shop and the man told me that it used to be the gaol and the cellars were unchanged too-maybe you could get in and take some photos as it is going to be apartments

I have traced my Charlton line back to 1700s. They originate in Chollerton. George Charlton was born about 1792 and his father John Charlton was baptised in 1763. His fatehr was William Charlton.
George Charlton's wife was Ann PAtterson, born Simonburn in 1804. Her maternal line were Verty (or Varty) and I have traced them to about 1700 in Penrith, then to Allendale and StJohn Lee.
George and Ann's son Georg, married Isabella Lawson from Bellingham. Her father was John Lawson, a stone mason from Greenhaugh. near Bellingham.
If this is familiar to anyone, we may be able to help each other.
The Philipsons were from Bedlington. John Philipson was a blacksmith at Barrington Colliery in mid-1800s. He married Mary Stoker.

My GGGrandfather was Edward Rutter, born Gosforth in 1841. Married Margaret Jane Ramshaw. Edward's father was Thomas Rutter who married Margaret Ann Wheatley of Earsdon in 1830. I would be grateful if anyone has connections.
Also, My paternal grandfather's family are proving difficult to track down. The surname is Scott and they moved south from Ancroft and Scremerston mid-1800s to work in the mines at Pegswood and Ahsington. William Scott, born about 1846 in Scremerston, married Elizabeth Muerr, born about 1843 in Morpeth area. Can't find any information on Elizabeth and her family.

Name: Paul <thenorthumbrian@yahoo.co.uk> Date: 2006-06-12 Home Page URL http://www.northumbrianassociation.co.uk/index.html Comments:
The kingdom of Northumbria stretched from the Humber to the Forth and was once the most powerful kingdom in the British Isles and was a nation before either England or Scotland existed.
The Lindisfarne Gospels are the greatest Northumbrian treasure.
There has been an ongoing campaign to have the Gospels returned to the North East from London for some time. Back home the gospels would be a boost to Northumbrian pride in our own achievements; they would become a focal point for people studying our unique culture & history.
And I would like to see regional organisations such as One North-East, the Regional Assembly, and Culture North East put their weight behind the campaign, these organisations seem to keep such a low profile in relation to our regional culture I am sure most people aren’t even aware they exist.
It would be nice to see prominent individuals from our region backing the campaign as well.
Now there is an opportunity for the people of this region to make their feelings known by signing an online petition for the permanent return of the Gospels at the Northumbrian Association website.

David,
Impressive website
I wonder if you could assist me or point me in the right direction re investigating a 'local' individual or tracing any living family
Over the past seven years I have been researching the story of a young aspiring war journalist – Dorothy Lawrence who in 1915, after being refused to become a war correspondent by some leading London newspapers, went over to France, disguised herself as an English, male soldier and managed to spend 10 days with the Royal Engineers, working on trenches and military mining before being arrested.
It appears that Dorothy, was assisted in part of her escapade, by a ‘Sapper’ Tommy Dunn. Tommy had written a note confirming the event took place and this note is in the front of her book titled ‘Sapper Dorothy Lawrence’ which was published in 1918.
I have gained information that Tommy was hospitalised in 1918 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading with a fractured leg and he spent 92 days there. He was discharged from the Army in 1920 and returned to the Newcastle upon Tyne area. He was a miner and was 48 years old in 1918.
Looking at the census records for 1901, it appears he may have lived at 18 Double Row, Weetslade and was born at Shankhouse.
He was awarded a medal after the WW1 but it was returned in 1923, so he may have died around then. The head of the family was Susan Dunn.
Although I seem to have found his death record, dying in 1923 aged 52 in the Newcastle area, awaiting death certificate, I seemed to have come to a slow halt in tracing any living relatives and wondered if you had any ideas on how I could progress this or if you had any knowledge of Dunn's in the area?
Is it possible the local Miners club/association might have knowledge of him and his escapade?
Eagerly awaiting your reply
Regards
Raphael

I believe that the time is right for the devolution of power away from London and towards the Northeast, there is no reason why decisions affecting the people of this region shouldn’t be made here.
In the up and coming referendum we are being given the opportunity to vote for an assembly which would have the power to oversee economic development and which will focus on providing skills training, supporting local business & creating good quality jobs for all the people of the north east.
The assembly would have control and influence of one billion pounds of expenditure and as well as the economy would be involved in other areas of regional policy, including drawing up a strategic transport policy, providing good quality housing, and will influence & control decisions in areas such as arts & culture, fire and safety, tourism, heritage, protecting the environment, and health.
For the first time the people of the Northeast have the chance to open a door which will mean greater control over our own lives and the people who are saying we should vote no have nothing to offer but maintaining the status quo and continuing to have all the decisions made by senior civil servants in London and members of un-elected quangos.
We should be proud, be positive about the future and vote yes for a north east elected assembly.

All of my ancestors were miners from Northumberland and it gives one a real sense of connection to note the mining village/colliery names in Northumberland and here at home in Newcastle Australia i.e. Dudley, Wallsend and the rest. When one begins to research, you also find familiar surnames of other coalmining families who migrated from Northumberland to our Newcastle and whose children and grandchildren still work in the mines here.

Elizabeth Ann Lowery was my grandmother who had a small shop in Blaydon-on-Tyne from about 1925 to 1950. I am trying to trace her anticedents. She ran a guest house called the Crow Trees just before the railway bridge on the way to Swalwell prior to 1925, I think she originated from Barrow in Furness in 1868 and came to the North East about 1900. John Duckworth and Sarah Calverley (Calvarley, Calvery, Calvary) were my great, great grandparents. They lived in Adelaide/South Australia where they had 4 children. I have found records of all the children'e births and Sarah's death on 20/9/1872, but I can't find where either of them were born, married or where John died. I found a john Duckworth who was transported to Port Jackson (Sydney) on 29/7/1830 on the Lady Feversham. He might be the one?

Hi,
I'm looking for any info on the following people.
My Grandfather was William Dunn Born around 1906 and I think he worked at the north Walbottle Colliery and he married Nancy Hendry (not sure of dates ) His brother Lance was killed down this pit aged 16 in 1925. He also had another brother Tom who moved to West Bromich and three sisters one Maggie who lived all her life in Throckly. Not sure how many brothers and sisters my gran had but I do remember a uncle Billy in Ponteland. My grandfather and Grandmother then moved to Bates colliery in Blyth during the war and lived in Princes Gardens and then up to Cowpen on retirement. My They had Two Children Doreen (who was a local primary school teacher, and still lives in Blyth) and John (Jack) who after working for a few years at Bates pit joined the RAF.

I noticed that there was an item on the 1861 census for Dudley Colliery, which I had notes on in my file for the Latty family. Initially I was puzzled as there were no Latty's, until I checked names and noticed that the transcription was wrong, and the family were listed as SEALTY, at 21 Middle Row, Dudley Coll. I wonder if the family next door (or across?) at no. 22 were really SEALBY or if that was another Latty brother. They are not on IGI to check. The name LATTY is the correct one for the family at 21 Middle Row, as everything matches my notes which were researched some years ago. The site was great though, as I was able to take notes from my own study with no travelling!

At about the age of 18 John Joseph Kane must have travelled to Australia and there in Collingwood, Victoria, Australia John Joseph Kane married Hanna Gleeson on 22 August 1891 and they had 11 children of whom my father John Francis was the fourth. The first two were twin girls who died at birth. My father, John Francis Kane married Mary Kelly on 5 May 1923 and the nine of us named above were born from 1824 to 1938. Great site found by accident when looking for information on the Newcastle Berwick Railway where I have just discovered an gt x 3 Uncle was killed in an embankment fall. I have managed to get a copy of the coreners report. I was looking for more information on the Railway workers of the North East. The corners report is not very long I was hoping to find out where in Ireland the Devitt family came from but not luck, I have a copy of every census except 1841 but I dont think they were there then. Could you advise me of any other source of information on these Navvies.
Thanks again for putting up such a great site.

Interesting site here, one little point may be to note that whilst twice as many Irish were illiterate it was due to the penal laws at the time that discouraged poorerIrish families from gaining an education as long as they practised catholicism so were faced with loyalty to their religion or social advancement. Not 100% clearcu but this was a factor in the reputation of"thick Irishmen".

I found your site of great interest - I was born and brought up in Dudley and was delighted to see your articles and photographs. My family moved up to Northumberland from Norfolk to work in the coal mines from about 1870 I think. They lived in the colliery rows to start with. There are a lot of families from Norfolk on the 1881 census who must have moved up to the area to find work.
I am trying to find my great great grandad's birth at Howdon in 1805 - he was called Henry Clark and in later years was a shoemaker at Seghill, Annitsford. Anybody know this Clark family?
Keep up the good work!

Birth in 1881 Quarter December District of Tynemouth volume 10b Page 213.
This has to be my Grandfather. It's the only Kelters I can find in this area.
I have only a picture of my Grandfather in a Merchant Marine uniform.
He married my Grandmother Mary, who's maiden name was either McGurk or McGuirk I believe she may have been from Belfast Northern Ireland.
My Mother Catherine as she signed her name on her marriage certificate was listed as Kathleen on my Birth certificate.
This appears to be a very rare name as far as names go.
I have just got into this very recently and would appreciate any help I can with locating my Irish roots on my Mother's side.

The O' Was dropped and the family became just Kane's Peter later returned to Ireland and married a Joanna McKenna. They had one child who died soon after birth so they then returned to New Zealand.
