Name: Katie Holland <kh7@georgetown.edu>
Date: 2010-08-06
Name of Family Head and Wife: Nicholas and Ann F Tarrall
Came to Mathews County, VA from: born 1810
Moved from Mathews County, VA to: Norfolk VA 1840s
Comments:
Nicholas is in the 1850 Norfolk (city) Census (age estimates birth year as 1809/10) with family, his name is listed as a plasterer of the Norfolk City Hall and is listed as such in the 1852 City Directory. He is gone in 1860 Census; vague obit has date of death as 12/21/1852 Norf. He is listed in the 1840 Mathews census with members of his household in sync with ages etc later verified by delineating Census records. Spelling of the last name from Terral to Tarrall to Tirrall to Tyrrell in various documents. Kingston Parish records show a Nicholas Tyrrell born 1790 married to Susanna Foster but the children are not enough specific that I can attach them to "my" ancestor.

Name: Juanita Diggs <lowbottomroad@msn.com>
Date: 2009-07-01
Name of Family Head and Wife: Anthony Degge & Mary
Came to Mathews County, VA from: born 1790
Moved from Mathews County, VA to: died ~1856
Comments:
Was this Anthony born in Mathews or in Middlesex? Birth records seem unavailable. He is listed in the 1850 census. There were 2 Anthony Degge in Mathews with the same birth date. The Anthony that married an Edden is well documented, with marriage records but I am researching the other Anthony. William Diggs is assumed to be his father.

John BENNETT & Mary BERRY were married in Middlesex County, VA on 27 JAN 1867. The 1880 Census has them in Pinetop, Middlesex County with 6 children, Sarah, John, Bruce (actually Jopseph Bruce), Towlsy (actually Thomas Arthur), Claude and Ollie. By the 1900 Census Mary is widowed and living in Piankatank, Mathews County, VA with all 6 children. 1910 and 1920 have Mary in the same place and children moving out until only Sarah and Harvey are still in the household. In the 1910 Census my GGrandfather, Joseph Bruce BENNETT is living with his wife and two sons in Mathews County, VA where he remained until his death in 1946. My Grandfather, Holly BENNETT Sr. left Mathews County, VA to join the Merchant Marines and ended up in Baltimore, MD. He retired from the Merchant Marines and started another career with the Baltimore Fire Department as the Pilot of a fireboat until his retirement. He lived in Baltimore, MD until 1989.

Isaac Ward bought large tracts of land immediately after the Civil War on the East River. He built his home directly across from Williams Wharf. He was the owner & captain of the ship "Seaflower". He transported goods from England to Williams Wharf, which was an official port of entery. The rocks he used as ballast in the bottom of the ship were placed on the river shore. It is unknown why he left Somerset Co. He married Emma Forrest 16July1867. She was from Baltimore Co., Md. but her father, James Tyler Forrest was originally from "the Haven", Mathews Co., VA.
