My dad moved to Newport news from Tarboro, NC to get work in the shipyard. He worked for a year or more, married my mom, who lived in Danville, VA. They lived in different places in Newport News and the last place was Copeland Park in Hampton. They bought the house on Dandy Loop Road in May 1962. It was such a wonderful place to grow up, except the mosquitoes!

Name: Pat Correa <correapat@yahoo.com>

Name of Family Head and Wife: Gideon Johnston
Moved from York County, VA to: Fauquier County, Virginia
Comments:
Gideon Johnston's house and property were destroyed in the siege of Yorktown in late 1781. He was in the military from around 1775/1776 to 1783 when the war ended, and later in his life he ends up in Warrenton, Fauquier, Virginia, and dies on 6 Dec. 1825. I don't know his wife's name or his parents or where he was born (although he was born around 1749) but here are some sources to help with his descendants:
Virginia Soldiers of 1776 Record for Virginia Soldiers of 1776
p. 1163-1164-1165
Gideon Johnson, Brigade Quarter Master.
Exect. Dept. March 3, 1851. The heirs of Gideon Johnson are allowed L. B. for his services as a Brigade Quarter Master in the state line for three years. John B. Floyd, Gov.
Letter to Dr. William Helm, from A. Jennings. "Received your letter by yesterdays mail, in regard to a land claim you think my grandfather Johnston was entitled to. So far as I am concerned, I am willing to pay you the same, or make the same contract with you that you have made with my brother William and with Frances Ann, which I understand is one third of the land you may recover, although it seems to me a very heavy commission." Dated, The Plains, 16 May, 1849.
Fauquier Co. Court, 2 June, 1849. Proved that Gideon Johnston of Warrenton, Va., died about the year 1826; that he was a Pensioner of the United States at the time of his death on account of service in the Rev. war; that he died intestate, leaving one daughter, Elizabeth Thompson, and two grandsons Augustine Jennings and William A. Jennings; that Elizabeth died some years since intestate, leaving one child [start of page 1164] only, Frances Ann, who has married Mr. Bossier, now living in Louisiana; that the said Frances Ann Bossier and Augustine and William A. Jennings are the only heirs at law of the said Gideon Johnston. Copy teste, Wm. H. Jennings, Clerk.
At a Superior Court of Law for Henrico Co. Nov. 9, 1830. Thomas O. Jennings, administrator of Gideon Johnson, dec'd. Appellant against the Commonwealth. Upon an appeal from a decision of the Auditor of Public Accounts, refusing to allow a certain claim of the appellant against the Commonwealth, for services rendered by the said Gideon Johnson in his lifetime, as an Officer in the Revolutionary War.
It appearing by the evidence on the part of the appellant, filed in the cause, that the said Gideon Johnson was a Captain in the Regt. of state Artillery, and that he continued to serve as such until the end of the war. Therefore the Court is of the opinion that the said Gideon Johnson was entitled to one half pay during his life, and that the Auditor of Public accounts erred in rejecting the claim thereto. It is ordered therefore that the said Auditor do issue and deliver to the appellant a warrant on the Treasurer of the Commonwealth, for the said half pay from the 6th of Feb. 1781 till the death of said Gideon Johnson, which occurred in the month of Sept., 1825. From which Judgment the Attorney Gen. prayed an appeal to the Court of Appeals, which is allowed, and by consent as well of the counsel for the appellant, as of the Atty. Genl. the agreement subjoined to the Judgement in the case of William Helme, Admstr. of Robert Cowne, is to be made a part of this case. A copy teste, J. Robinson, Clerk of the court.
Auditors Office, Jan. 8, 1850. Pursuant to the within Judgment, the sum of Thirteen Thousand, three hundred and seventy-five dollars was paid by warrant issued at this office on 23 Feb., 1833 to William Jennings, Admstr. de bonis non of Gideon Johnston, dec'd. being in account of the half pay of said Johnston as a Capt. of Artillery in the Rev. war. Signed, James E. Heath, Auditor.
Note. The issuance of the warrant for half pay shows that the judgment was affirmed by the Court of Appeals. This appears on the records of the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery, 19 Dec. 1832.
[start of page 1165]
A letter to William Helm from J. T. Bossier. Mount Pleasant. Apl. 21st 1849. She agrees to allow the one third of land to Helm for his service; speaks of herself as the granddaughter of Gideon Johnston. She says that her mother never received the land to which she was entitled as a family by the name of Colston, had settled themselves on the land, that the facts of this might be traced through the land office. That a new warrant should be issued. "Of one thing I am certain, my grandmother never received the land to which she was entitled as heir of my Grandfather." She adds: "I am the daughter of Elizabeth Johnston, wife of William Thompson, and grandaughter [sic] of Gideon Johnston of Warrenton, Va." She concludes by saying that her husband, Mr. Bossiere will sign his name to the letter, sanctioning her act. Signed by F. A. Bossiere (Who was Frances Ann Thompson). Also signed by J. T. Bossiere. Note. The letter is post marked, Covington, La.
Power of Atty. granted Dr. Helm Apl 30, 1849 by William H. Jennings as Admstr. de bonis non of Gideon Johnston, dec'd.
Va. land office June 5, 1851. Received of the Register warrants 9292-9296 inclusive for the services of Gideon Johnston as Quarter-master (Brigade) in the Va. state line. William Helm assigned 889 acres of his share of the land to Richard M. Heath. Witnesses, John Talmadge, and E. S. Parker. Recorded Book 3, page 536, Va. L. Off.

The depositions state the deponents were in Virginia during the period January-June, and that they had learned of the death of Mr. William Tracy of Berkeley, Shirley Hundred, Virginia, apparently during or earlier than January. One deposition refers to a Captain Powell, who had married William Tracy's daughter.(21 July 1626-King Privy Council Action: An order was directed to the Governor of Virginia to assess the value of the Estate of Captain Nathaniel Powell, decd., and to send value of it in tobacco to England, a petition having been made by Thomas Powell, brother and admistrator of said Powell, decd, stating that in consideration of the poverty of said Powell's brothers and sisters, that proceeds of the said Captain's Estate should be paid unto them. The Virginia Company had certified that one William Powell, no way kin to the decedent, had taken out Letters Of Administration of the said Captain's Estate and had seized the goods of Captain John Huddleston in Virginia. The said William Powell then died, and Nathaniel Powell's Estate came into the hands of Mr. [Edward] Blaney who married William Powell's widow. Thomas Powell, eldest brother of the said Nathaniel Powell, dced had taken out Letters Of Administration for the decedent in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Name: Jerry McLaughlin <jermcl@msn.com>
Date: 2002-06-20
Name of Family Head and Wife: William McLaughlin
Came to York County, VA from: Jamestown, June 10, 1639 from Scotland
Moved from York County, VA to: St. Mary's Co, Maryland--1646
Comments:
William McLaughlin was a bonded Servant, whose name wasn't important enough to be registered on the ship's
passenger list...too poor to pay passage to America, he
signed bonding papers for 6 years, and his Bond was sold
to a plantation-owner in Jamestown in June 1639 to work
in the tobacco fields-- At the end of his bonded service
in 1646--he left VA, and was recorded as applying for a
Land Grant in St Mary's Co. Maryland "1646", he improved
his home-stead-- And as there were "only" about 40 married
women in 'all of Maryland', he recrossed the Bay in 1648 to seek out a wife,'there being many more women in Virginia'-
He then married a Kellam daughter there, and brought his
new wife back to his Land Grant in St. Mary's Co. Maryland.
They had four sons, one was named by his mother's maiden
name of "Kellam"... They raised their family at St.Mary's
Co. and two of their sons, moved back to VA, where they
might be close to "Grandpa Kellam". William McLaughlin &
his wife eventually died in St.Mary's Co. Maryland--
