My Hanks family has been in South Carolina since the early 1700's. I have private papers of famiily history prepared my my mother's cousin. I would like to compare the information that I have with that of other researchers of this family name, I am not skilled in this area and would need some guidance.

I found lots of information that I have not been able to find anywhere else. It was laid out well and easy to read and navigate aound the site. Very user friendly. I am researching Thomas Hanks born about 1779 and Phoebe Brinkett - Brinkwood - Brinkworth married 28/07/1802(her father was Thos Brinkworth etc etc and mother Sarah). Not sure which surname is correct. I have been given all three as the probable surname name. I am trying to trace Thomas Hanks parents. ? Thos Hanks and Mary or ? Thos Hanks and Martha Wall. Phoebe came to Australia in 1839 on sailing ship Bussorah Merchant. She was listed as a widow.

Nancy Hanks Lincoln
Comments:
On my father's side, it appears I am a descendant of the Lees of Virginia through Anne Lee, Richard Lee I's daughter. I just recently found out that Nancy Hanks Lincoln was a grandchild of Nancy Anna Lee. Ancestry.com calculates my relationship to Nancy Hanks Lincoln as 6th cousin, 7 times removed.

On my mother's side, I am a proven 3rd great niece to Mary Mudd Lincoln, Mordecai Lincoln's wife (paternal uncle to Abraham Lincoln). Marriage record - much more recent family tie.

The main reason I'm writing is to see if anything else has come up on Nancy Hanks Lincoln's paternity. Frankly, I don't believe the story about her father being someone other than James Hanks. In my opinion, the photograph of Dennis Hanks -- Nancy's PATERNAL first cousin -- looks too much like Lincoln himself to put Nancy's paternity in question. I also think that William Herndon -- Lincoln's law partner and the party who originally circulated that story -- was a money hungry opportunist.

Please let me know if anything else definitive has come up on that issue. Thanks -- Diane Kennedy.

I don't suppose you could CORRECT my Father's name on your site? His name was not Richard Abrams Hanks, but rather Richard A Hanks. The "A" was not an initial/abbreviation for any name. It was just the letter A. Someone has accidentally inserted "Abrams" (his mother's maiden name). This is really irritating me and I would like to correct it. Thank you for your consideration!

Hello

Am hoping someone reading this may help with information on my great grandfather Harry Hanks.

Harry (Harold) HANKS died in Australia in 1943, aged 70, making his approx birthdate 1873. On his death certificate it lists his birthplace as Glasgow Scotland. His father's name was listed as Harry Hanks - a shipwright and his mother as .... Bull. First name unknown.

He met my gt Grandmother (Agnes Stanton nee Brown)on board a ship to South Africa, she was married with 1 child and another on the way at the time. They had 3 children in South Africa between 1899 - 1903
Muriel Edith Florence HANKS 1899
Irene Agnes HANKS 1900
& Evelyn Violet HANKS 1903.

Agnes' 2 children took the HANKS name in South Africa. One died Herbert Harry Edgar HANKS in 1911. The family then moved to Australia around 1913. I can find no evidence anywhere of their being married.

So without a wedding certificate all I have to go on for Harry Hanks is what is on his death certificate. Am hoping someone may have resources I am uable to find to give me a hint on his origins.

Family word of mouth seemed to think his heritage was Danish or German so he may not have been born in Scotland, maybe only lived there for some time. Even that is a mystery, but one I would love to solve.

The Bussorrah Merchant passenger list.
Our great great grandparents, William and Anne Beard were passengers on this sailing of the Merchant.
However, clearly the person who registered the names was a little heard of hearing: The list shows "William Beard?, 28 in Dec 1838 Ann Beard?, 28, Kingston, dau of John Gorman & Ester, 4 children, 1 nephew". While the names are correct, Ann was the daughter of John Coleman and Hester (nee Harrison). Their nephew Thomas Cugley born 1823 who travelled with them was the son of one of William's great uncles, John Moody Cugley. (The Australian Cugleys are actively researching their family as are we.) William, Ann and their four children came on to New Zealand where William died on August 16th 1840 on the Wairau Bar. He was one of five early settlers who were building a farmlet for Unwins, the Sydney Lawyers, on the Wairau Bar near Blenheim at the top of the South Island of New Zealand. It is not known if the party drowned or were murdered by Maori. Many thanks for the information contained in your website and all the best with your own researches.
Cheers
Tony Mooar

We are looking for information on the Hanks family that owned/lived in the Salem, UT home we now own (from what we can deduce) from the late 1890's or early 1900's until the 1980's. The best information we have been able to pick up is that the home was presided over by a Minnie Hanks until the 1980's. We have found references to her obituary from the Spanish Fork Press on 7/20/1989 but no image or text from it. We adore the home and would love to learn more about the family that lived in it for so many years. There are many Hanks buried in the Salem Cemetary and a furniture business here owned by the Hanks descendants, but we don't really know much more than that.

The information I've seen on Ancestry.com is varied. I have not seen much information regarding Nancy J. Hanks. My grandmother said her family was a shirt-tail relation to Abraham Lincoln. Congratulations on your wonderful research and website! I loved your website on how it is set out, however I tried to find a list of Surnames to do a cross-check but did not find a link. My connection with your Hank's Family is that my ancestors were on the "Bussorah Merchant" that came to Australia in 1839 and whilst checking the entries, noted that there is a transcription error on the shipping list for Eliza Hanks. You have indicated that she is the daughter of John, weaver of ... but when you check the record, is actually John Weaver, of ...

Just wanted to bring this to your attention although I am sure you have picked up on this, but maybe others visiting the site might record the information incorrectly.

All the best with your Hanks researchings and keep up the good work.

Dear Webmaster,

For those researching their English and Welsh ancestors it can sometimes be difficult finding out what information is available to them and where to look for it. It is with this in mind that I have been involved in the development of a reference type web site www.ancestor-search.info providing guidance on WHERE to seek information on English and Welsh ancestors.

With the numbers visiting the site steadily increasing, it is currently being extended to provide links to single surname web sites such as yours. A link to your web site under the name HANKS has been provisionally set up (see page http://www.ancestor-search.info/INT-OneNameH.htm ). I would be grateful if you would check out the provisional note alongside the link to your web site. Please let me know if there is anything you would like changed or added to this provisional note. Please feel free to provide the exact wording that you would like to see in place of what has been provisionally written.

I would also be grateful if you could take a general look at the site. In particular, I would be interested to know whether you consider the site is useful to those planning to visit a record office they havenít been to before. For each of the ninety plus record offices (see http://www.ancestor-search.info/CRO-INDEX.htm ) scattered across England and Wales it provides:
∑ contact details
∑ what its rules and charges on copying documents are (these vary widely from record office to record office)
∑ where online information on its holdings, research services and opening hours can quickly be located
∑ a streetmap showing the location of the record office
∑ a list of nearby hotels

If you wish to know about who is responsible for the site please consult page http://www.ancestor-search.info/GEN-AboutUs.htm . You can find the objectives of the site on page http://www.ancestor-search.info/GEN-Objectives.htm

If you consider www.ancestor-search.info is of genuine use to family historians tracing their English and Welsh ancestors you are very welcome to link to it from your web site.

Thanking you in anticipation for your help,

Suzanne Brown

* 1738 Apr 4, Broadwell, Henry Hanks & Elizabeth Hayward, both of Donnington (on your list).

I also have in the enumerator's own handwriting the two pages of the 1811 Statistical census of Horsley Ref: P181/OV/7/1, showing the 8 HANKS families of the village at that time with heads of household named. The headings are Name, Occupation, Males, Females, Parish, Householder (i.e. tenant or landlord). I've condensed them to 2 x A4 pages or I can transcribe just the 8 families information. Do you want these for your site as well, if so in what format?

Regards Graham Caldwell.

Comments:
In my research on the Hanks in my family tree, I came upon this site, and recognized the descendents of George Hanks as part of the tree I already knew. My family line ends on the handwritten family tree with Thomas Hanks, b.1632. However, that line did not end, and continued through Thomas's son William b.1654/5, his son William II b.1679, his son Richard b.1723, his son Joshua b.1760 (a revolutionary war soldier) and finally to his daugher Ruth. The name Hanks leaves my family tree at this point, as Ruth Hanks marries John W. Vaughan, and Vaughan is the traced name. One other interesting fact though; Joshua Hanks' older brother William fathered a Nancy Hanks, the same Nancy Hanks who a minority of people believe to be the actual mother of Lincoln, not the Nancy daughter of John Hanks and Nancy Shipley. (I believe the latter to be Lincoln's mother, however). Below is the site I used to trace back the Hanks missing on this site; likewise, this site contains Hanks the one below loses track of.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~swva/index.htm

I hope this helps anyone searching for missing Hanks!

Greetings from Indiana, usa

I found most interesting the history of the name HANKS

Researching: Family lived at Rainsville, Indiana, Warren county, USA
One day I was restoring a cemetery stone of my ancestor at Brisco, Indiana, Keys Cemetery and I noticed for much too long this huge marker was laying on the ground near by. The entire cemetery had been disturbed by intruders at one time. As I search for the name on the stone I discover it is on the bottom and it is a 400 lbs. marker as for the reason being there for so long. I was determined to see the name on the stone and establish who, what, where, & when. As I try to move the marker I see it is much too much for me alone. But, I figured while I was here I would devise a way to do something. I dug out under one side and moved it just a bit to where I could roll the marker over to see the name. I can now see that it is a 23 year old soldier by name of Wallace B. Hanks. Now, Why was he buried in line with my 1860 ancestors. I will soon discover thru more search.

To finish what I started I managed thru a very agressive effort to move the marker to the base that I leveled out. With much strain I roll the stone up onto the base and take a deep breath. It was all I could do. I tried to lift the end but only a few inches. With many small stones I lift and stack, lift and stack, lift and stack. Finally the marker is about one foot higher than the base. Not for sure if I can do this, I start my way up with the stone. At the ballance point I had to catch my breath and steady the HUGE marker. Finally with the stone in place I brush off the name and bow my head in respect to the person under me who gave his life to help save the North in the Civil War.
My search begins with the collection of pictures from that day in july to mark the beginning of a great summer adventure. I believe that 23 year old Wallace B.Hanks is the son of Joseph Hanks b.1789 & Margaret Alexander married in 1814 and living in Rainsville,Indiana in 1863. I discovered that Hanks were related to the Alexanders and Alexander were related to the Orr`s thru distant connections.

Thanks for the time here.

I found the site most interesting as there are many mentions of places like Nailsworth, Horsley, Worley etc in Gloucetershire in England which is where I grew up. My father was Robert Edward Thomas Hanks from Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England. His mother was Fanny Hanks also from Nailsworth. I think my father was born in Worley which is a small Hamlet just outside of Nailsworth. I was born in Stroud in Gloucetershire and lived in Nailsworth for 25 years before moving to Houston, Tx where I still live. I married Elizabeth, who comes from Williamsburg Va, we did move back to Nailsworth in 1986 but moved back to Houston in 1994.
My mother, Lillian Hanks and my father are both buried at Shortwood church in Gloucestershire.

Liz, itis me again. I just wanted to clarify Elizabeth's birth and death date. They don't jive with the headstone, some of the other records. Which is right, the bio you wrote where you say she was born Apr 22, 1852 or is it Apr 15, 1852? Also the death date was Feb 21, 1927. The picture we have was passed down from Elizabeth Hanks. It is in an old fashion oval frame and shows her holding her bag. She was quite thin. We had copies made of this photo and then donated it to the local Eastern Arizona Museum for safe keeping. I will share it with anyone. Elizabeth Hanks had a daughter Eliza Jane who is my husband's great grandmother. I also have a snapshot of her in front of her home in Eden. We are in the process of moving to St. George, so they are all packed but we can reconnect. Sue Dette Reed

Comments:
We have traced our family history clear back to Benjamin Hanks-Abigail, and his father Joseph Hanks, but no further. What I found interesting was that we now have actual proof our family came from England, even though we always suspected it. I have a sister who looks like Elizabeth Hanks, it is very very freaky.

My family lives in the southeastern WAshington area. My dad grew up in Leonore, Idaho. His father, Joseph Marion Hanks, homesteaded property there and died in 1931. the homestead is still there, as well as the grade he made, which is named the "hanks grade". the Hanks family, JOsheph Marion Hanks and his wife Ela Elouise Hanks, and my father and a few of his sibilings are burried at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Lenore, Idaho.

This site is absolutely amazing. I wish I found it when my father was alive, he would be tickled pink to learn of John Hanks, 1940, England. Just absolutely amazing.

In her book , Nancy Hanks, The Story of Abraham Lincoln's Mother, 1899, Caroline Hanks Hitchcock wrote, "All the branches of the Hanks family throughout England and America seem to have come from the beautiful old town of Malmesbury in Wiltshire."

Focal point of the medieval town is the Malmesbury Abbey. It was founded in 676

by the first Abbot, Aldhelm. In 939 King Athelstan died and was buried in the Abbey. 1350 to 1450 was a period of restoration and alteration to the Abbey. In 1500 the spiral fell. In 1662 the west tower fell. 1900-1928 the Abbey was restored and reopened.

From "Malmesbury, 1100 years a Borough, " 1980, June Badeni writes:

"There are a number of things which make Malmesbury unique among England's ancient towns; the remnant of the great Benedictine Abbey in whose precincts lie buried a saint and a king, both graves unmarked; it's claim to be the oldest Borough in England; and finally, the distinction of possessing what must surely be the most exclusive 'club' in the land."

According to the "The Malmesbury town Guide" issued by the Malmesbury town Council, "The Old Corporation" dates back to 916 A.D. when Edward the Elder incorporated it as a Borough to be maintained by an Alderman and twelve Capital Burgesses with a High Steward as Overlord.

In 937, King Athelstan (grandson of Alfred the Great) had to fight against one of the sporadic invasions of Danes which occurred at intervals throughout his reign. A battle took place somewhere near Malmesbury - the exact location is not know and the Danes were defeated. (The Battle of Brunaburg)

In 939, as a sign of his gratitude to the men of Malmesbury for the help that they had given him in his battle, Athelstan bestowed upon them, "the Burgesses of Malmesbury and their successors", the land "lying near my little town of Norton" which is now called Malmesbury Common (Malmesbury Hundred). The rights of the Commoners to their share of this land has passed from father to son (or son-in-law) right down to the present day. No "outsiders" have ever been able to break into this community, except for a brief spell in the 17th century when a few young men were admitted without hereditary rights provided that they were apprentices living in the town. The Commoners of today are, therefore, almost without exception, are direct descendants of the men who fought with Athelstan against the Danes. Among these men were twoHanks brothers. The names of the two brothers are not known.

The name of Hanks is well known in the little town of Malmesbury. Many have been commoners, Capital Burgesses, artists and musicians. People there know that their town is the ancestral home of Nancy Hanks Lincoln mother of Abraham Lincoln.

For more information about Malmesbury read "The Story of Malmesbury" by John Bowen. Contact The Malmesbury Abbey Bookshop or The Malmesbury Bookshop for further information, or email: books-gifts@malmesbury.co.uk.
