I lived with an Aunt and Uncle for several years, and the uncle was Arthur Claude Luffman. This was in Canada, but he was born in England.
His son George Henry Luffman [known to the family as Harry](my Aunt was his step-mother)
was killed in France in 1944, shortly after D-day.

I was born in Corsham, Wiltshire, England (1940) but most of the Luffman family lived in and around the Bristol area. I moved to California in 1981 and returned to England in 2000. My father was Lionel Bogue Luffman and he was one of 8 children. His father was a famous cricketer and boxer. The family history has it that the Luffman's were persecuted out of Germany as they were Lutherans. One branch settled in Southern England, and some moved to the USA, I'm told that most Luffmans are in the North and South Carolina's. But to my knowledge there has been no communication between the two families.

I just found this site, how cool! My father is Mark Luffman and his father is Elroy Luffman. I am a lady living in Manchester who has been researching the Luffman family for several years. My mum was a Luffman before she married my dad. Her family came from South Wales and before that they were from Somerset. I have loads of info on the British Luffmans going back a couple of hundred years.

I was born in London in 1949 - My mother was Rose Emma Luffman who died the following year. I have lately looked up records on the web and found that the Luffman family originated in the west country (Bristol/Gloucester/Somerset and the branch that I belong to came to London in about 1860. My father was Alfred Wilson born 1918. I'm so interested to see that there is an American Branch of the family.
Have you any idea where the Luffmans originated from? It doesn't sound like an English name.

My great-great Uncle Thomas Luffman, b. 1853, moved to Montreal abt 1900, he is listed in the 1901 census of Montreal,Quebec with his wife Elizabeth and five children, Harry, John, Winnie, Lance and Albert. As all of you know, Saturday, June 25, 2005, is the Luffman Family Reunion in Bishop CA!
In the letter I sent in December 2004, I asked everyone who is camping to reserve his or her spaces. I need a head count of who is camping, if any and who is planning on reserving hotel/motel rooms. I know I stated in the newsletter that you need to let me know by May 25, 2005. That is still in effect. Anytime this week will also be OK. My phone number was listed on the newsletter I sent via regular mail in December. Please call or e-mail me if you have any questions or need lodging phone numbers and info.

At a recent family history conference in Doncaster, David Hey, professor of history at Sheffield University was talking about surname distributions. He uses the incidence of surnames on the British Register of Deaths as his yardstick, and in reply to a question from myself said that he considers 60 records from 1838 to 1842, or from 1843 to 1847 to be a rare surname. There are 19 Luffman deaths registered from 1838 to 1842, and 22 from 1843 to 1847. So it's now official, the Luffman surname is rare, in England at least!

Good to see a Web site for the Luffmans. My connection is through my mother's family, of course. She was a Weeks, and her grandmother, Mary Ann Luffman, was married to Constantine "Bud" Stevenon. They were originally from NC but had settled in central FL around Ocala. Mary Ann's father was John Luffman, who died at the very end of the Civil War here in Virginia. He's buried in Hampton, VA in a military cemetery. He was in the 9th Florida Infantry. There's just a tidbit of my own research. If anyone else is working on the FL line I'd love to swap findings.

Since I posted the my last message last year, I have come across some new informmation. I am not trying to find ancestors, as this not my line, but maybe what I have will tie in with someone elses. Arthur Claude Luffman was very close in our family. He was a minister in Saskatchewan and Ontario, Canada, and was the Minister at my marriage.
His birth certificate says:

In relation to the query made by another person, Arthur C. Luffman told me he was under the impression the name was originally German, but he had no idea how many generations back it had been. As far as he knew the family had been in England a long time.
One other note Arthur had a sister Eileen. During his boyhood they lived in London.England. He emigrated to Canada, married there and had a son, which he called after his father, George Henry Luffman. Unfortunately Harry never married, and was killed in France, shortly after D-Day. His picture can be seen on the site Canadian Virtual War Memorial, Veteran's Affairs.

I'm told by popular folk lore that the English Luffmans were persecuted out of Germany in the early 1800 for being Lutherans. I'm told the family split up, one family went to America and the other to the Bristol area of England. How true all this I have no idea. One uncle on my fathers side, went over to Germany (Hapsburg area) to search the archives for any documentation of the Luffman family tree, but nothing was found.

My uncle was from London, England, about 1920's, to Saskatchewan. He was a Presbyterian minister. Left the ministery, and had a small town newspaper at Landis, Sask. His only son, George Henry Luffman (known as Harry) was killed in World War II, near Caen, France, shortly after D-Day. His father's name was Arthur Claude Luffman. After his son was killed, he went back into the ministry, and he died and is buried at Baltimore, Ontario.
Probably there is no family relationship, but Luffman is not a common name. He had no other children and his son was not married.
There are still Luffman's in London, as Harry visited them during in the 1940's when he was shipped overseas, but I do not know where, or who they are now.

This is the first time I have found anything about NY Luffmans. My gggrandfather was William Luffman. He was married to Amelia Hendricks. They had a daughter, Anna Arvilla Luffman, who married Elon Andrus in Wolcott, NY. Anna and Elon had a daughter, Lulu, born in 1880 in Wolcott. She is my grandmother. We know of our earliest ancestors came from a village just outside of Yeovil in the county of Somerset, England.
We don't know if these are related to your `Luffmans' but
