Hi
My name is Stephon and I'm trying to find information on Ancestors and Desendants, family name DAIZE in Gordon Yard and Spring Village. The DAIZE family emigrated from Maderia, Portugal to St.Vincent in the 1840's after abolition of slavery to be promient servants and indentured labourers. My great great great grandfather Paul Daize was the first settler in either Spring Village or Gordon Yard with his wife and my great great great grandmother Julia Daize her maiden name was DeFreitas they gave birth to my great great grandmother Alexandrina Daize and her siblings in either Gordon Yard or Spring Village. Alexandrina gave birth to my great grandmother Maude Agatha Daize in Gordon Yard and she was mulatto(black mixed with white). Here is some info to help:
Paul Daize was born in 1837 either in Madeira or St.Vincent
he married Julia DeFreitas on July 9 1873 in Cumberland
Paul Daize died in 1884 in Spring Village age 47.
Julia Daize DeFreitas was born 1847 either in Madeira or St.Vincent she died in 1924 in Spring Village age 77.
Alexandrina Daize was born November 14 1884 in either Spring Village or Gordon Yard.
Maude Agatha Daize was born August 2 1908 in Gordon Yard
she died June 5 1963 in Spring Village age 55.
Please contact me soon with the results about my family and I hope you had a wonderful christmas and have safe Happy New Year.

My father, Oscar Ferreira, was born in British Guiana around 1915 and emigrated to the United States in the early 1920's where he changed his name to John Farrar. His Scottish mother had left Guiana upon the death of her husband and she and all her children changed their names and never spoke of Guiana to any of their children. It has only been a few years since we finally discovered his real name. His father was a wealthy Guianese merchant who married an immigrant girl from Scotland (unusual for the time) in 1892 in Georgetown or Demerara. We are attempting to learn more of John Ferreira and his antecedents. We have been searching for information for years and would like very much to correspond with someone to discuss this. Thank you.

My grand mother made "vihna da alho" or something that sounded like that. It was a crock of pork marinated in wine vinagar and garlic, Your mention of the Christmas pork sounds very similar! I have a letter from my (deceased) father stating that MARIA TISHEIRA (Terceira?) emmigrated to ANTIGUA about 1850 from MADEIRA (paternal G.Grandmother).
Further: Ancestor: JOSE PEREIRA LEIRA DU (DE?) OLIVEIRA was hanged in LIVERPOOL. UK for Piracy around turn of 17th century (perhaps as early as 1635-45).
We BELIEVE my Paternal Grandfather, EMANUEL ANTONIO PEREIRA was from the AZORES, emmigrated to Antigua - was orginally a merchant seaman, then worked for Agriculture Dept. of the Antigua Gov't. Died in Antigua (ST. John). He also stated that at some point (didn't elaborate - rats!) "we traced our family back to 1350 in PORTUGAL".
Any info. or leads/suggestions anyone may have would be very much appreciated!

It's great to see someone develop a site specific to the Caribbean area Portuguese link, since most on-line sites deal with the Portuguese who went to the US.I'm not even sure if historically more Portuguese went to the US than went to the Caribbean. I have two further comments:
1. The Portuguese who went to the Caribbean went by sea and largely to British colonies. In the 1800's ships could not go directly from Madeira or the Azores or the Portuguese mainland to a British colony in the Caribbean. Those immigrants/ labourers/ whatever first had to go to England. Where are the ship manifests, given the British penchant for record-keeping? That would be dynamite info.
2. Don't leave out Bermuda from your research. Although Bermudans have a reputation for NOT considering themselves Caribbean folk, I happen to know there was Portuguese immigration to that island and from the geographic perspective of your site, it may make sense to include them under your umbrella.....even if it may offend some sensibilities!

Happy to see the people involved with this project. It is like a light at the end of a long tunnel. Have made several attempts to secure records from the church, archives and all letters were unanswered. Placido Campos married Maria Freitas there in the early 1800's and he met with an untimely death there in the mid 1800's. The family have always wanted information on the marriage etc., but it
seems that it is a dead issue. They left Madeira in the 1870's however there is no record for Placido. That is our delimna. Looking forward to visiting you site and learn aboaut all of the Portuguese pilgrams who left their homeland for the westindies.

My grandfather Malcolm S. Lucas was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad. His Father, my Great Grandfather, Charles James Lucas went to Trinidad with the new British Governor of the Island and according to family oral history was the Aide de camp of Governor Sanford Freeling K.C.M.G. 1880-1884. After the Governor left, he stayed in Port of Spain and opened a bakery in Port of Spain. He also attended attended St. Ann's Church.
In December 23, 1882, Charles married Caroline Ferreira. The wedding was officiated by Rev. Alick M. Ramsay. Caroline was the oldest of two sisters and two brothers. She was born (approx.) 1865-1866 in Jacksonville Illinois. Her parents, Frank and Helena Ferreira, moved to Illinois from Maderia. Carolines birth date is estimated because family tradition states that she was about 16 years old when married to Charles.
The problem is that my Great Grandfather died November 29, 1898 (and is buried in Lapreyrouse Cemetery in Port of Spain, Trinidad) when the family was quite young. Therefore, much of the history died with him. His children were my Grandfather Malcolm, Archibald, Edwin, Emily, Violet and Evelynn. My Grandfather once stated that his father, Charles James Lucas, was born in Bournemouth England.
Charles, Died in or about 1898, Caroline 1947, Helen and Frank Ferreira in the 1920's. All are buried in Lapeyrouse Cemetery
It is a pleasure to see this site and the work that many of you have been doing in pulling together the history of the Madeira Exiles.
