was it you? one of the leslie/lesleyl/lessley's emailed me several months ago, probably last august?. that email was on a different laptop that went back to sony for them to fix. they called me and said they were going to have to remove everything on it. most every thing was backed up but the verizon email wasn't. just a few days ago it occurred to me that you or someone in the family had written me and i hadn't replied. at least i don't think i replied, my memory is not all that great. then i realized it was on the laptop in for repairs. anyway, i still have the same email and if i didn't reply i apologize. feel free to drop a line if it was you, i think it may have been. if it was you, and you write again, send a copy to my other email also just in case. twistedprincess69@yahoo.com

hello all,
Moses spelled Stepp. Buried on my grandma's farm. I have a copy of both books, William's and Henry Scalf's. I am interested in finding out the connection of Henry Stapp, the physicist, and John Paul Stapp, Space Scientist. Henry has laid the foundation to "scientifically" overhaul modern intellectual poppycock. To borrow words from John Paul, he "wants to reassure all those "scientists" that if they think that they won't become sterile." Very solid, brilliant, thinking firmly rooted in a good classical education. His lucid thinking, plainly stated- and we are talking about advanced science and philosophy- reminds me of Plato, Euler, and Newton. I KNOW he's right. And it is a very profound breakthrough. I am not surprised that it was a Stapp. I have a theory.. that the Stepp/Stapp family of America is a people that the Almighty will use for His purposes. I have no proof, but I know it's true. God Bless

I see my brother Randy and his daughter, my niece, Corinne have both been here and signed your guest book. Great Site!!! We are looking for information on our grandfather/great grandfather. Cori has been trying so hard to do a family tree but because my father, Mitchell Stepp, was illegitimate and his father, Melvin Stepp's family did not know about our father, born to my grandmother, Alma Cantrell, we keep running into people who don't want to talk. My brother did meet with Melvin's son Mark when he was in Missouri for my grandmother's funeral and Mark did say that he had heard something about our dad, who would have been Mark's half brother, he also said he thought there was something about our dad in his dad's family bible but he had to see if he could talk about it. Melvin and my grandmother both lived in Missouri, grandma lived in Puxico and I think Melvin lived in Sturdevent. My brother Randy gave him contact info but he never got back with him. If anyone knows the line from Melvin's side of the family PLEASE email us. Cori would be very excited if you emailed her, her email address is in this guest book, her name is Corinne Stepp. Thank you, Teresa (Stepp) Squires

Mt father was John Thompson son of Jams and Mary Smith Thompson.
I would point out that my dad's name was John Thomas Thompson [not John A. Thompson] and died in 1953 not 1961. I am certain of the identity within your work because he had several brothers and sisters which you list so there is no doubt the identification is accurate.

Tim, I am also a descendant of Wm Thompson on your website, through the line from Wm Thompson and Malvina Speer. I had most of the Thompson and Carmichael info, but you have lots of good information that I didn't have on the Leslies and some other descendency lines.
I can provide you with data to fill many of the "unknown" fields in my own line as well as correct a few "initials" on some of my direct descendants in your dbase. For example, William Houston Thompson (note middle initial) married Malvina Speer. They moved to Limestone and Hill County Texas with some of their children, nieces and nephews. Wm H Thompson and his wife Malvina are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Hubbard, Hill Co, TX
I don't know where you are located, but there will be a Thompson reunion (above lineage) in Mt Calm Texas on July 25th. You and the other Leslies, Thompsons, Carmichaels, etc from this line would be welcome.
Regards, Jim Cain, Houston, TX

LESLIE'S FROM INDIANA AND ILLINOIS! My Great Great Grandfather is David Leslie b. 1861 in Indiana, he married Nellie May Wickoff in 1889 in Illinois they had several children. David had a brother named Andrew (married Fannie Biederman) and sisters named Phebe (m. Royal Levisee), Sarah, Ellen, Martha (could be Ellen Martha m. Azariah Baker - 1st Husband Alfred Gift), a step sister, Mary M Bacon (m. Pinkney Hancock) and a half sister Elizabeth Leslie (m. Ames Madary). I believe there were more siblings because it says on a census that his mother had 8 children and 7 were still living in 1930, keeping in mind that Elizabeth was not her child by birth.
The family came to Illinois about 1868, Elizabeth is the only that I know of who stayed in Indiana.
David's parents were Christopher Leslie and Mary Ann Fitchhorn. They were married Dec. 5, 1850 in Miami Indiana. I am unsure of Christopher exact date of birth, I seen it range from 1811 - 1825 in Ohio. Christopher was married before to Eliza Jane ? the mother of Elizabeth. She died Feb. of 1850. Mary Ann's parents were Samuel Fitchhorn and Elizabeth Unruh.
I have been searching forever to find Christopher's parents or any siblings. If any one can help please e-mail me at dmarieh5474@hotmail.com

Very nice web site. Interesting and educational too. Nice to get to say hi to a second cousin who is from my dad's side. I thought I would add a small piece of trivial but amusing info. At one genealogy site, several years ago (this one? another one?) I saw my father's name listed as William Eddie Lessley and later mentioned the "error" to my brother, Bruce. Mind you, I was in my mid 40's and always thought dad's actual name was William EDWARD Lessley. My brother told me that dad actually indeed was born William Eddie Lessley and when mom went to apply for his social security number she put William Edward Lessley on the form, never realizing that Eddie wasn't a nickname for Edward in this case. Somehow it never got corrected and William Edward Lessley officially became his legal name,

Hi. Love your website. I have been visiting this great site off & on for a long time now. My great grandmother was Mary C. Stepp, born 1872 in TN. or Ga. She has been my brick wall for a long time now. Her mother was most likely Suffrona ( Patton) Stepp, who is in the 1880 census for Lumpkin co, Ga, as a young widow. Mary's brother's names was James Stepp and William Stepp. There was also a younger sister named Adaline Stepp. Possebly another brother named Vester. Suffrona ( Patton) Stepp was the daughter of William & Barbara Patton, originally from NC, but they also lived in Fannin county, Ga, and also Polk county, TN. around 1860's and 1870's. If anyone recognizes any of the people listed here, please contact me. Would love to finally break through this brick wall of mine! Please visit my genealogy site " My Southern Roots", at:

Hello, everyone! This is Tim Leslie, and this is my site. The entry below by Brian gave me the idea to enter a note in the Guestbook myself.
I am proud to say that I am indeed a member of the Clan Leslie Society. Any Leslie visiting this site should consider joining this humble yet proud association. Just go to http://clanlesliesociety.org/ for information, and historical data on the Leslie family. It's not a money-making organization - your $15 per year goes towards bi-monthly newsletters full of interesting stories, current and historical, of Leslie's, as well as occasional yearly publications with even more content. The current Earl of Rothes, Chief of Clan Leslie, started this organization in 1978, and it is now an International Society. For anyone not familiar with this organization - did you know that virtually all Leslie's can claim kinship, in having descended from one man, Bartholomew, a Hungarian, who arrived in Scotland in 1069 A.D.? Research performed hundreds of years ago determined that all Scottish Leslie's (Lesley, Lessley, and all other variations) descend from one of three branches, all descended from that Bartholomew. I personally have never heard of another family with such a tradition.
And now more mundane matters - if anyone's noticed, I haven't made many changes to this site in a long time. It took me quite a lot of time, struggling with Front Page, to get this site up and running; web design is not my gift. And now, whenever I make changes - something seems to change for the worse, so I simply stopped making changes. I can update the database with no problem, so anyone who has corrections, etc., please let me know. I don't always check this Guestbook very often - but I do check my Hotmail account, which is on the main page (timothywleslie@hotmail.com). Anyone who Posts a question about a particular line of ancestry in here - if I don't have any information whatsoever about that line, I often don't respond; I tell myself I'll write them later and explain that, but it often doesn't happen...
And with that, I'll close this entry. Thanks to everyone who visits, and special greetings to all cousins out there, be they Leslie, Stepp, Thompson, Carmichael, Hilton, Carden, Croley, Herron, or the many other branches, too numerous to list! (I also love having Hatfield's and McCoy's in my tree, from the Stepp line. Isn't that neat?)
Yours aye,
Tim Leslie

Hello Tim (another Tim!)
I noticed you stated Stapp/Stepp, and I've heard (from my aunt) that Stepp was rumoured to be a derivative of Saint Epp, but it's been unfounded. Also, I'm not so sure Stapp and Stepp would have been one of the same, if this was the case, then perhaps all individuals with the surname of Stepp would be related somehow. I'm just getting started tracing my own lineage and it'll be interesting how it develops, best of luck!

Two of the boys died young: Matthew (b. 1815-SC/d. April 11, 1827; buried Prosperity, Newberry Co., SC); and Daniel C. (d. by 1829). Dr.YOUNG and his family moved to So.IL by 1829. Their oldest child, ELIZABETH (b.1812-SC/d.1854-IL)is my g3gmo. She married Elijah MINER/MINOR in Hamilton Co., IL in 1837. Since the THOMPSON name was continued through descendants of this couple, I am hoping someone will see a connection and contact me.

Hello Tim!
So glad to have found your website! I am a descendant of Mary Thompson and James Young so I was really excited to find out the name of Mary's father here. My records state that Mary died on Nov. 4, 1834 (not Nov. 14) and that she and James were married on Sept. 7, 1773 in Ireland. I'm not sure how accurate this information is - it was taken from "Bible Records, Vol 1," by Memory A. Lester. (Mrs. Sadie Lester Crooks owns the Bible now.)
Best of luck in your searches!
Sincerely,
Susan Wilson, (great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Mary Thompson).

Hello, I found your website while I was searching for the surname Villadsen. You have my aunt, uncle and cousin's name on your tree. There is an error that you need to correct. My cousin Anna Lloyd Villadsen is not married to John David Paseur but her mother is. Peter Lloyd Villadsen was her father and he was killed in a downtown department store where he worked when he stepped into elevator shaft. Mattie Marguerite Lessley's sister Persia died recently March 24, 2000 in Montevallo, Shelby Co. AL and is buried at Oak Grove Baptist Cemetery, Jemison, Chilton Co. AL. I may run across some other information that might help you after I read all of your tree. I have a lot of information on families in the central Alabama area.

Not certain how I got my name, but my grandfather was Harmon Leslie Hoffman, born in about 1895 in Franklin Co., Tennessee. Do you have any leads or connections between Hoffmans and Leslies? The Hoffman ancestors lived near Charlotte, NC before moving to Tenn. I know that the Carolinas were full of Lesslies, or Lesleys, or Leslies, depending on your preference of spelling.
Thanks!

Tim, I looked at the comments from people viewing your guest book and enjoyed the experience.
There was one note that got my attention. Someone said they were related to Jack Dempsey. I remember my mother always told the story that she baked biscuits one morning for Jack Dempsey. Apparently, he was related to a relative of my father and they came over to visit my mom & dad during the first year of their marriage. Therefore, I assume that the person who wrote the note to you is from a family related to my dad!
How about that?
Love, Mom

Another interesting family story about the Young, Thompson, Carmichael families
from a newspaper article from 1909:
An article from the "Newnan Herald and Advertiser" (Coweta Co., GA newspaper)
from Aug 13, 1909 gives a brief history
of the Young, Thompson, Carmichael families. The article
was written by Cora Johnson, granddaughter of James and Mary (Thompson)
Young. Here are some excerpts:
" Our father's grandfather, Jas. Young was born in County Downs, Ireland Aug 15,
1750, and his wife, Mary Thompson,
was born in the same county Feb 15, 1753. They were married
in Ireland Sept 7, 1773. They emigrated to America in 1774 and settled in
Newberry, County, SC near the town now known
as Prosperity. They had eight daughters and four sons. Jas. Young died Sept 17,
1802 and his wife Nov 14, 1834. This worthy couple were the ancestors of many of
the families of the White Oak community, among them the Youngs,
Carmichael's, Bowers, Russells, Coles, Browns, and Walthalls. Abram, eldest son of
Jas and Mary Thompson Young, was our grandfather and the only one of this large
family of which we will write. He was born in Newberry, SC
Aug 9, 1780. He married Mary Ann Carmichael, daughter of
Patrick Carmichael and Elizabeth Thompson Jan 20, 1802. They had eleven sons and
one daughter, our father being the
youngest child. They moved to Coweta County in 1838 and settled on the lands now
owned by their grandchildren; J.W.
Young, Mrs. T.H. Mattox and Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Johnson, Mrs. Mattox owning the
old home place.
Our father, Joseph Young, was 19 years of age when he moved with his father to
Georgia. Two of his brothers, Abram Jr. and James, had already moved here and he
and his sister Elizabeth (afterwards Aunt Betsy Bowers) came with their father Abram
Young Sr. Our grandfather died shortly after coming to Georgia, but our grandmother
lived many years in the old home with our father, and both lived and died in the home
where they first settled.
Our father, was born July 6, 1819, married Elizabeth Speer
June 27, 1850 and died June 28, 1899.
The Young family are of Scotch-Irish descent, as are most of those from the north
counties of Ireland. Some writer has said "If an Irishman is a Presbyterian, when he
lands in America, he is Scotch-Irish. If he is a Catholic, he is pure Irish". Cora
Johnson.

Great web page with excellent information on the Thompson, Carmichael and allied
families in Coweta County, GA and Newberry Co., SC.
There is an article in the book "Memoirs of Georgia", published by the Southern
Historical Press in 1895, which gives a brief sketch of Patrick Carmichael and mentions
the Thompson families from Coweta County, GA:
" Patrick Carmichael, an old citizen of Coweta County, was born in Abbeville District,
South Carolina in March 1819. his father, Arthur Carmichael, born in South Carolina
in 1774, was the son of Patrick and Elizabeth Thompson. Patrick Carmichael, the elder, was
by birth an Irishman, who took an active part in the Revolutionary struggle, in which he was wounded
in the arm. He was a well-known Presbyterian, of which church all of his family were worth
members. The wife of Arthur Carmichael was Frances Bell, whose parents, John and Sophie
Bell, were of German ancestry. In 1831 Mr. Carmichael brought his family from South Carolina
to Coweta County, Georgia, moving my means of ox-teams. Here they settled in the midst of the
woods, at that time, full of game, which for many years helped to supply them with food.
They cleared up a farm and reared a family of nine children: Elizabeth, Abraham, Sophia, Arthur,
Mary Ann, Patrick, Robert, Nancy and W.W. Carmichael.
Educational opportunities were of course limited, but the young Patrick made the best of such as fell to his lot.
He married in 1839, March 28, his wife Mary A.W. Speer, being the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Riggan Speer, who settled in Jasper County, GA in 1818. Mr. Speer had been a soldier of the War of 1812.
Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael have been the parents of fourteen children, nine of whom are now living; Smith, homas, Jane, John, Ella, Abraham, Alberta, James E. and Louisa V. Three of the sons served in the late war, two of whom, Joseph W. and Robert were killed. Mr. Carmichael himself was in the service of the state during the war and during the last year of the war served as first lieutenant of Company H., Georgia Regiment.
Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael are worthy and esteemed members of the Methodist Episocopal Church, and
are among the leading citizens of Coweta County.
There is another article in the book about the same family with a variance in the spelling of the name
Carmichael, shown as Carmical, apparently written by another person:
W. W. Carmical, one of Coweta county's worthiest citizens, a native of South Carolina, born 1833, is the grandson of Arthur and Frances Bell Carmical, who came from their native state in South Carolina and settled in Coweta
County, GA ca 1834. The toilsome journey was made in ox-carts, and on reaching their destination the family
lived in tents while their cabins were being built, very small and without floors, for the first year or two.
Mrs. Carmical was the daughter of Christopher and Sarah Mosley Cox, South Carolinians. The child,
W.W. Carmical, who was but a year old when brought to Georgia, grew upon the farm, making the most
of his educational priveleges, even though obtained at the price of much hardship to himself. Much
of the time, even through the winter, he ws obliged to go barefoot, but the courageous endurance of his
boyhood fitted him for a sturdier manhood. In 1862 he entered the army, enlisting under Capt. Henry North,
in the First Georgia Cavalry, being appointed corporal. But he was severely wounded at Cassville, GA and
compelled to return home. Nor did he recover his health until some time after the close of the war. In this
part of the country, upon which war had laid it's devastating hand, the outlook at the time of the cessation
of the hostilities was very discouraging. But Mr. Carmical entered bravely into the unequal contest and has been
very successful; and although his beginning was made on rented land, he now owns 460 acres of fine land in
excellent condition, and is regarded as one of the most enterprizing and successful men of his section, and is generally respected. He belongs to the masonic fraternity and he and his wife are members of the Baptist Church.
He was married in 1854 to Miss Elizabeth Robinson, born in Alabama in 1835 and reared in that state, to which her
parents, Feudal and Margaret (Stracener) Robinson, had come in the early days when Indians were numerous,
wild game also plenty, and white inhabitants were few. Mrs. Carmical, who was a member of the Baptist Church, died in 1890, leaving her husband with ten children: John, Arthur, Maggie, Sallie, Harper, William, Ida, Robert, Walter Lee and James. In 1892, Mr. Carmical married Miss Henrietta Stephenson, a native of Pike County, GA and the daughter of James and Sylvia Stephenson. "
I have researched the Coweta County, GA Thompson families in connection to my ASHLEY, GAY and
SKINNER family lines, with Thompson marriages in each family line. The James W. Thompson in your
web pages (# 8 in your data) who married Elizabeth (Mary Elizabeth?) Carmichael is a strong candidate
for the father of Abraham Thompson (b. ca 1820) who married Martha Patsy Adams in 1842 in Coweta
County, GA. (Your data shows that Abraham (Abram) Thompson as a son of an older Abraham Thompson
whose wife died in 1808, so prob. an error ?)
I am searching for a Joseph Thompson (b. ca 1765) who married Mary Polly GAY (sister of Rev. War soldier
Allen GAY who was in Coweta County, GA by 1830).
Thanks again for all of your efforts in creating the great web site of family information on the Thompson
and Carmical families, excellent work!

Tim, I am ABSOLUTELY impressed. Most interesting. This will be of such great help to me when I start my own research--which this site just may motivate me to do. Keep up the good work. I'll be checking back regularly.
