I am related to James Hodge, brother of John Hodge (Taylor). I am interested to know about the family, as in what they did for a living, and what their importance was to the town. I noted that the population was likely around 1500 in 1800 but is that what it was in the mid 1700's. What drew their father to the town?

My great x 3 grandmother, Catherine Street nee Snelling, was buried at Bow on 6 Feb 1837 at the age of 62 years. I'm wondering if there's anyone living close by who could see whether there's a headstone for Catherine and if so, whether any legible inscription remains.

Catherine's husband, Mr Thomas Street, sugeon, died at the age of 48 years and was buried from St Mary Steps, Exeter on 3 March 1828. I'd welcome any suggestions as to where Thomas may have been buried?

Many thanks, Jenny

Hi,
I am looking for information on Devon families. The Hopkins lived in Clovelly. Grace Hopkins became involved with an attorney (John Williams) the story goes because she was a nurse in the family. I don't know if she married him as the three children have either Hopkins or Williams as names on parish baptismal records. She subsequently married Thomas Fisher and they moved to the US. Grace is my GGGrandmother through her daughter Elizabeth who married David Wilder of Verona, New York. I would love to find more out about the mysterious John Williams. Apparently he soon married someone of his station (Gent), but they had no children. That is all I know. Jeanne

Just found your very interesting site. I have just 'arrived' in Devon with my husbands gt gt grandfather William Jacobs marrying Selina Cross in Tiverton in 1843. William lived in Culmstock, a schoolmaster as was Richard Cross Selina's father. On the 1851 cenus for Culmstock Hannah Cross Selina's mother is shown as schoolmistress. Would you be able to tell me how to find out where they taught? In 1851 Q3 Jul/Aug/Sept three daughters died in Culmstock all with the same reference number, I assume at the same time - a tragedy of some kind - would there be a local paper recording such events? Any information would be gratefully received. I shall enjoy exploring your web site further.

What a wonderful web site! I am searching for information on my seventh great grandparents, William Tricky (son of William) and his second wife Angis Pumery (Pomeroy?), who were married at the village of Broad Clyst, Devon, in 1725. They had three children: Christopher (c.1729), Giles (1731-1802) and Elizabeth (c.1736). Giles had evidently come to America by 1764. His wife Agnes was mentioned as the step daughter of David Pinkerton in his 1764 Orange Co., NC will. The area where they lived became Caswell Co. in 1777 and Person Co. in 1792. Giles made his will in Person Co. in 1795, and died there in 1802. He mentioned four children: William, John, Annis and Elizabeth. Annis (1767-1844) married Hezekiah DeWeese (1760-1839) in 1784, and Elizabeth married Hezekiah's younger brother Jonathan DeWeese, Jr. (1767-1849) in 1788. I am descended from Annis & Hezekiah's first born son, Jonathan DeWeese (1785-1841). I would be most grateful to anyone who could provide me with information on the Trickey and Pumery (Pomeroy?) families and the village of Broad Clyst.

Best Regards,

Hi Sue,
Nice site. My wife's gg grandmother was Elizabeth Trude, m. 1847 Thomas Gunn. Oddly I can't find Thomas in the 1841 census (at Ancestry.com);even more oddly I can't find in the 11851 census any of the 5 people with whom Elizabeth lived at Poughill in 1841. Are you aware of a terrible plague at that time or a mass decision to emigrate or anything?
Best wishes, Jamie.

I've traced my family back to my GG Grandfather William Waldron who married Ann Howard in Bow, Devon in 1854.

The marriage certificate gives william's father as John Waldron but he did not witness the marriage. According to census records and his death certificate William was born between 1826 and 1834.

I've found John Waldron who married Elizabeth Heard in Bow, Devon in 1836 and the subsequent baptism of five children (John, Elizabeth, Mary, Jane & Susan) but this marriage was after my GG Grandfather's birth. Was he born to this couple prior to their marriage?

I was particularly interested to read your comment in the Bow Web-Page that one of your ancestors William Heard was a tanner's labourer living in the parish in the 1881 census.

My GG Grandfather William Waldron is quoted as being a tanner's labourer in the Bow Baptism record of his first child Gilford in 1861.

John Waldron (who married Elizabeth Heard) - the possible father of William - is also quoted as being a tanner's labourer in the Bow Baptism record of his first child John in 1837.

There seems to be several co-incidences here. Could I be correct in thinking that John Waldron and Elizabeth Heard had a son William (my GG Grandfather) before they were married?

Or is there another, separate connection between the Waldrons and the Heards?
Hello, it's great to get an insight into the village. My ancestors lived there for years as blacksmiths. If you have any info I would be very grateful, especially about my Grandfather's (Charles Smith) mother Agnes Mare, who we are having problems finding the right family.

I especially like the pictures of the school, I really must visit soon.

Kind regards, sue

braggs were fishermen on the iles of shoals off new england in the early 1600s-1700s. they migrated from devon probably in the northam appledore area. i need help making the connection.

my grandmother, harriet hurd hopkins, was born march 13, 1872, rosedown, hartland, to susan hopkins who was a lady in waiting at the clovelly manor house. no father was named. susan's father was samuel hopkins age 48 at the 1861 census when susan was 6. so she was 17 when she gave birth. harriet came to america when she was 16 as a companion to two small children named eastlake. anyone have any clues to the father or any relatives?

To whom it may concern,
I am a teacher who has fregularly taken children on school visits to Wembury to do Rock pooling as part of class topic work, over a number of years. As with a number of schools in and around Plymouth, it is a topic that really interests the children. I recently took my class, along with my colleagues to Wembury, and for the second time in a number of years, had the weather against us. What I fail to understand is why nobody seems to have considered or made accommodation for school parties and where they could leave their belongings AND or shelter! Although this is not such a problem during fine weather, there is still nowhere for the children to leave their belongings when they go rock pooling. Schools want to give children a varied curriculum and where possible, 'hands on experiences'. The cost of coaches in an expensive one and it is extemely disappointing when fascilities such as those missing at Wembury, are not available. Teachers work long hours and it is often difficult for prior visits to be done. I come back to my main point: I feel there is a missed opportunity at Wembury for making this a better educational place to visit for large groups from schools.
The Rock pooling activities have always been excellent! Thank you that this is still on offer.
Best wishes.

Comments:
Huxtable Farms, the current Bed & Breakfast in Buckland, North Devon, was the farmhouse that my gggg grandfather George Heddon grew up in. His parents, Thomas & Mary Heddon, supposedly rented it from the Earl of Fortescue in 1798. They had 4 children, William, George, Ann and Richard. In 1831, they auctioned off all their posessions and arrived in New York on the Brig Apollo 6/13/1831. If anyone knows anything about the genealogy of this family, please contact me. I have a very interested 84 year old Grandma, and a Mom who is visiting Devon in July 2005. Would love any information! P.S. The son of Richard is the James Heddon who started the now famous Heddon Lure Company in America. Thanks!

Dear Sue;
Firstly, congratulations and THANK YOU for the lovely information your research has provided us. Much appreciated.
Secondly, I am wondering if we are related. My research goes back to Andrew Webber (b 1650) m.1673 in Cadbury and later living in Cheriton Fitzpaine - children: Mary (1674), Christopher (1675), John (1678) Andrew (1683), Andrew (1685)and possibly John (1709).
Im actually stuck on Andrew and am trying to see if he is the same Andrew born 1650 in Barnstaple. Do you know anything about this lot?

Thanks again for wonderful information and research.

Really interesting site. Well done. The people who I am researching in Devon are:-

AVERY - from Tedburn St Mary.
Managed to get bits and pieces of information back to FRANCIS AVERY or CROCKER who married CHRISTIAN SKAINS in 1718 in Tedburn. There are about 3/4 Thomas Avery's who married a Mary, makes life quite confusing!

ROLLE - from Tedburn St Mary.
Haven't got any further back than ABSALOM ROLLE who married ELIZABETH GUSCOTT in Tedburn - Jan 1819. Their daughter JOANNA ROLLE married THOMAS AVERY in Tedburn c1847.

GUSCOTT - from Tedburn St Mary.
Not got much information here, just ELIZABETH, and more recently a CHARLES GUSCOTT born 1858 in Tedburn, need to know the connection.

PLYMSELL - from Tedburn St Mary
MARY PLYMSELL married THOMAS AVERY in 1819 - in Tedburn, would love to have more information about her family.

SKAINS - found three female marriages in Tedburn St Mary, Ann married in 1706; Elizabeth married in 1712 and Christian who married Francis Avery/Crocker in 1718. No information about where these three Skains ladies came from, or about their parents.

SAUNDERS - Exeter and Moreton.
CHARLES SAUNDERS born in Exeter c1852 (occupation Brass Finisher) married MARY ANN AVERY born c1852 in Tedburn St Mary. Marriage took place in Exeter in 1878.
Father of CHARLES was WILLIAM SAUNDERS a Cabinet maker, most likely candidate for this is a WILLIAM SAUNDERS born Moreton, Devon c1810, whose wife was Mary, from Middlesex. Would love to get more info about these people.

On my web pages, click on COOK, to get the families for Devon.

Happy ancestor hunting!

I have a brick wall built at the marriage of my 3xgt.grandfather JOHN WOOD, and his marriage to MARY HADDON 6th. March 1789 in CULMSTOCK, Devon.

One of their children was JAMES WOOD, born Aug. 1794 and babtized in Culmstock 28th. October 1794. By 1832 James was living in London (Islington/Finsbury) with his first wife, as a boot maker. fROM THEN ON i'M O.K.

I would very much like to try and track back through his parents marriages but it is complicated by the large numer of Wood living in the district, and several of them in the same shoemaking cottage industry.

Perhaps you might like to copy any reply to me off line.

Thanks, and good hunting,

Chris

Greetings from Vermont! Perhaps we have some Davy/Davey connection? My father is James Edgar (born 8/26/1928 in Bristol, CT) son of Edgar Ethelbert (born 5/17/1899 in Niantic, CT) son of James Davy (born Aug 1859 in Cornwall, England). Do you have any info on James b England? I believe he came to the US around 1870ish. He married Mary Sarah Rook who was born 7/11/1861 in Cornwall, England. They married in Niantic, CT in 1883. I don't have "proof" of these births in England. Thanks.

Comments:
Hello Sue,
My 2G Grandfather was probably the Loxbeare farmer John Bowden listed in your entry from Whites 1850 directory. I say probably because he died in Dec 1849 and his son John , my 3G uncle took over the farm , so it could be either. John Bowden senior was married to Susannah Venner , who was in turn the daughter of William Venner and Anne Maunder of Stoodleigh. Anne Maunder was my 4G Grandmother and had a brother Roger Maunder who married Jenny Jordan in Stoodleigh 22/4/1772. Roger and Jenny had a son Roger , baptized in Stoodleigh 27/2/1773.
I could not see a marriage of Roger junior to Ann in the Stoodleigh marriage transcripts but do see the baptism of Jenny Maunder which you list. It would seem likely that this Roger Maunder is the son of my 5G Uncle with his daughter having the same name as his mother.
I have little information on my COURTIS link. I found an entry in the LDS IGI for a marriage of David Bowden of Stoodleigh to Susanna Courtis in Exeter Cathedral on 4/4/1728. The Stoodleigh parish records show a William Bowden baptised on 19/5/1728 ( which is a bit close ) but the parents are David and Susanna Bowden.
John Bowden (the Loxbeare farmer , my 2G Grandfather) was born in Stoodleigh , the son of William Bowden and Alice. William and Alice named their first child Susannah and their first son William , second son David. William Bowden , who marries Alice Hatsel in Stoodleigh in 1759 seems to fit the age profile to be the William Bowden born to David and Susanna in 1728.
If you have any other research information which would clarify if we are related please let me know.
Rick.

Fantastic website. Just found it today, 22 Nov. 03. Scrolled through all the posted surname queries that pertained to me but will take more time to read messages later. My grandfather,Reginald Oliver Pridham Farthing, lived at 23 Chedworth St. Plymouth, Charles the Martyr, Devon with his parents, six brothers and one sister. I believe they called it Farthing Hall. The father, James Farthing was a merchant seaman b.1832 but died in a shipwreck. He was 49 during the 1881 British census. The home had to be given up during the great depression. The mother was Emma Huxtable O'Kelly (or Selly) Farthing. I am interested in finding ancestry of James and Emma but also am seeking grandchildren or great grandchildren of the six brothers. Their names were Edgar Albert Farthing b.1867, Alfred Doudney Farthing b.1869, Francis William Farthing b.1872, Frederick James b.1874, Arthur William b.1879, Samuel Farthing b.?, Reginald Oliver Pridham Farthing b. 1881 d.10 Oct.1960 Ontario, Canada. I knew him as he was the only one to come to Canado. The sister was Lilan Grace Farthing Pike b.1878 d.6 May 1966 in Zimbabwe, Africa. Some of the brothers may have relocated to Australia but am not sure of that. I would dearly appreciate any information or leads for both the family and the homesite via e-mail.

It is a wonderful site. I am australian, but currently living in the U.K. My Great grandparents were
William John Bragg Ball (son of William Ball and Elizabeth Bragg) and Sarah Ann Challice, ( daughter of William James and Maria Challice). Both of them were born in Thorverton, as was my grandmother Ethel Miriam Ball. They emigrated to Australia in about 1888 and WJB Ball returned to thorverton in 1907 and ran the subnewsagency until his death in the early 1920's. He is buried in the Baptist chapel Church Yard. Before they left for Australia the Ball family rented land adjacent To Court Barton from the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral. I have the lease in my possession. I also have some very early postcard photos of Thorverton.

I sent my last message thinking this was a Guest Book specific to the Washfield Parish which I had surfed into. Some very useful info there.

An informant has seen what I think is a hatchment (Coat of Arms) to the NIBBS family at the Washfield Church? This is presumably the monument erected pursuant to the Will of Barbara NIBBS 18 February 1808.

If anyone lives near there and could check, I'd be most grateful.

Well Done! A fantastic site. All the names listed in my interests except COWLYN are my Devon surnames, My COWLYN ancestors originated in Cornwall but moved to Devonport in the early 19th century. The family came from St Stephen in Brannel and the Cornish lot are spelt COWLING.The main areas of interest for my Devon ancestors are Ilfracome, the South Hams and Torbay, Stoke Damerel/Devonport, Plymouth and Plympton.
I am also researching the history of a farm called Grantland in Poughill near Crediton for a friend and if there is anyone out there with interest in the names BOWDEN/BOWDON, BATER, CLIGG, KINGDON, YEANDLE,and HELLYER from the Cheriton Fitzpaine, Cadeleigh, Poughill,Crediton and Tiverton areas I would love to hear from you. They were Mabel Warren, b, approx 1882 in Collumpton, Maud Warren, b approx. 1883 in Brixham, my grandmother was Ethel Warren, born July, 1885 in Torquay, married at All Saints Church on Dec 20, 1906 to a Timothy Walsh who was in the navy and emigrated to US in 1911, brother Berty Warren, b, 1886 in Torquay also and emigrated to Canada, and an Olive Warren b. 1889-1890. Hello Sue - congratulations on your web-site.

I am researching the MOCK surname worldwide, but mainly in Devon and Cornwall in the U.K.

For many years, finding the birth / marriage / death of BALTHAZER MOCK c 1640 has given me a great deal of trouble. Balthazer / Marrian were the parents of JOHN MOCK who was baptised 1st November 1666, BRAUNTON, NORTH DEVON, and later SUSANNA MOCK baptised 2nd July 1674 also at BRAUNTON.
Any info on the Mock surname, or the Balthazer / Marrian partnership would be gratfully received.

In 1805 he was in the Royal Navy on charge of RN Gunbrig "BITER" which was wrecked in Calais and he was taken prisoner and held in Verdun. Thomazin, with their first born, John, joined him in the first half of 1806 and four more children were born in Verdun. In 1814 they retirned to England. Elizabeth born 24 Oct 1808 came to Australia and married my GGGrandfather, William Fisher, a widower with three daughters. He died in 1838 and Elizabeth later married the brother-in-law of her eldest step daughter. What a crazy mixed up family!

Surname Interests Hulbert/Evans
Comments:
Hello there,
My g.grandfather,(maternal) James Hulbert, was born (or came from) Bath. At the age of 18 years, in 1836, he was convicted for stealing meat and transported to Australia. Does he fit into anyone's Hulbert line?
My father was born in East Stonehouse, Devon in 1913. His father, Alfred Evans, was a police sergeant stationed at the Dockyards before and during WW1. They lived at Devil's Point and then at Bull Point. In 1998 we had a visit to England and found Bull Point but we think the cottage they used to live in is now part of the gaol. The cottages were used for coast guard members as well as police. Does anyone remember this place? My grandfather retired from the police force in 1920 and they moved to Catford until 1928 when they emigrated to Australia.
All the best to fellow researchers.

My husband Alan is descended from James Johns who was born in Dolton, Devon. Continued farming when he bought land in Canterbury New Zealand - not sure of year he arrived. Family tree well documented by one of Alan's great uncles. We visited the village in 1992 - old farm no longer occupied by any descendents - but we photographed the headstones in little cemetery. Green grass and black and white dairy herds just as at Devonvale in Belfast, New Zealand!!
Well done with your website - photos of Devon brought back memories of our visit, thank you.

Comments:
Devon is my favourite county since I first went there in 1944, not knowing at that time that my great-grandparents, and their parents, were all from the Plymouth area!
My 3x great grandfather, William TEDMAN married Elizabeth BROOKLAND, while he was in the Royal Navy, at the "Sailors' Church" of St. Thomas in Portsmouth, Hampshire, (Portsmouth Cathedral since 1927). He was born circa 1775, but there is no note, in the parish marriage register for 7 Feb 1798, (in Portsmouth City Record Office)where their parishes of origin were, so I can't look them up! The next two generations were in Plymouth before moving to London in the mid-1850's.

JOHN DOLBEARE, of Boston, brazier, was born February 11, 1669, at Ashburton, County Devon, England, where the family had intermarried with the Prideaux and other local gentry for at least two centuries. He came over to America some 9 years later with his father, Edmund Dolbeare, a pewterer, his mother, and his brother, Joseph.

Would appreciate hearing from you if you have the time.

Nice site. Very well done.

Am researching my Northcutt family in America. Haven't been able to trace back yet to oldest ancestor prior to coming to U.S. So far back as far to my William Northcutt born c.1760 in Virginia (died 1839 South Carolina). Have yet to find his parentage, and further trace back to England. Know however from published sources that the Northcutt families (variously spelled Northcott, Northcote, Northcoat, Norcut etc.) came out of Devon.

It was wonderful to find your Devon website! My cousin Muriel Craig and I are about to visit Exeter, Colyton, and Northleigh in hopes of learning more about our Devon families listed above. We'll be there May 14-21, visiting a (Wright) cousin in Exeter.
Although I didn't find our names or places on your lists, the other Devon information is sure to be very valuable. We'll certainly hit the Devon Record Office first thing.
Thank you and your colleagues for a wonderful job!

Surname Interests PARDEE
Comments:
I am looking for further information about the many greats grandfather, John Pardee b.1567, Uffculme, Devon, England. He died 1656/7-Feb 7 in London England.

This information came from the published "Pardee Genealogy" by Jacobus in 1927. This information was discovered just before the book went to print so no further research about the roots of John has ever been published. The information discovered listed his children who were baptised in Uffculme. This included George Pardee's father, Rev. Anthony Pardee bp.1591 July 25. The Rev. Anthony Pardee was a priest in the Church of England and lived in Pitminster, England where his son George was bp. 1623.

His grandson George Pardee came to New England in the early 1600s.

I am interested in locating descendants of this Pardee line and learning more about the ancestors of the early John who lived in Devon,England.

Hello. I have a webber in my tree. Issot Webber form Wesr Teignmouth. 1788.married Richard Pomery in Rotherhithe 1807. her parents were John and Mary also West Teignmouth and his parents I think were William Webber and Dorothy Skinner married Stoke Damerel 1761.
I believe Dorothy Skinner may have come from Talland Liskeard District and would love to find William Webbers origin. I confess that the Webbers of Halberton sounded interesting but couldn't make a link so looking else where. Any ideas?
The interesting thing I found is that Richards parents may have been Richard Pomery and Rebecca Crapp married Stoke Damerel 1857 both I believe originating for Talland unfortunately I haven't found any children to them. Any tips would be great! regards Annie

I have just had a letter re: my gr. Aunt Mable Packham. As it turns out she was a sister in the Carmelite Monastery in Devon. As the monastery was closed in 1955 I got a reply to a query from the Carmalite Monastery in York. She was born in Crediton, Devon in 1871 and I believe her brother was Alfred Packham my gr. grandfather although I have his birth as about 1849 so he could have been her uncle but she did note a sister Jessie. I have no other information, but would appreciate any help given re: Packhams in Devon. Doing geneaology is like doing a jig saw puzzle without the picture. I keep hoping. Thanks Joanne

Thanks for a great website. My Huxtable connection goes back to Barnstaple, GEORGE HUXTABLE,[born Jan 1788,died 1852 in Tremont, IL, U.S.A.] He married EMMA AMY ROTTENBERRY. Along with eight children they emigrated to the States in 1838, reportedly on one of the last sailing ships.

Several other researchers have tried to connect beyond George, but we have a broken link. I am a grandmother without experience or resources, other than the internet and am in awe of your abilities.

Good luck and thank you

Hi Sue, THANK YOU for your Devon site which I have been visiting periodically for the past couple of years, and which has been of great interest and help.

All my listed interests are Devon ancestors and those I haven't listed are Cornish and Welsh !!
I would be particularly interested to hear from anyone with connections to the LEWIS's of Ilfracombe from 1700 to 1830 and LEWIS's in Diptford, Churston Ferrers, Slapton,East and West Allington and Galmpton from 1850 onwards. I don't know yet what happened to them in the 20 years between.
I am particularly looking for Samuel LEWIS, b.1831 Aveton Gifford, and Samuel LEWIS b.1863 Diptford.

Well done and keep up the good work.

Comments:
THANKS FOR LETTING ME PUT MY FAMILY INFO HERE -here's a short run down on my Steer's side of the family - we stem from Henry Steer b. 1779 near Kingbridge, Devon, England ( i believe in a town called Dartmouth) In 1803 he married Ann Rich who was born 1774 and died 1852. Both died in New York City USA. Henry Steer learned ship building as an apprentice ( 7 years - L 200 being paid ) for Newman of New Quay. After the apprenticeship he worked in the Royal Dockyard at Plymouthuntil until 1815 when he and his family moved to the Isle of Guernsey. There he built two ships for the French Government ( actually family history says the ships were built for smugglers ) These ships were built based on plans he made in 1805 while working as a journeyman. In 1819 a friend , John Thomas, with whom Henry worked with while at Plymouth Dock Yards and who had traveled to find work in Washington, D.C. USA wrote and invited Henry to come to the USA.. Henry came with his wife ,2 sons ( Henry T. and James Rich - my great great great grandfather and 2 daughters. It is during this time our family name changed from Steer to Steers- Henry and Ann had a total of 13 children of whom only one daughter -Ann stayed back in England
In 1824 the family ( now called Steers ) came with John Thomas to New York City to build a marine railway. One of his sons - George born in 1820 at Washington D.C. became the most famous of all the clan when he built the Yacht America (of America's Cup fame) in 1851 Nobody seems to remember when the S was added to the Steer name to change it to Steers - Henry Steers III
