Comments:
Carl William (Bill)Goodman was my paternal grandfather who died in 1962 when I was almost 8. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents (he met my grandmother Alice in England when overseas) in the city and at the family cottage they owned in Gimli (built around 1918 by his father) which my family still has. I was surprised to find my grandfather was in the machine gun company as I don't recall hearing that. I had heard he was a medic (but not sure about that now)and was at the Battle of Passchendaele and was apparently shell shocked or gassed at some point.

After a recent visit to Flanders and seeing places like Passchendale and Tyne Cot Cemetery and the Menin Gate in Ypres inspired me to find out more about my grandfather and his place in the war. He lived to 97 years old but would rarely talk about the war. I have received his records from Library and Archive Canada (promptly I must add). He arrived in France on March 28, 1918 and was TOS by the 4th Bn. Can. M.G. Corp. I'm still digging into where he fought. Any info would help. Good site!

Comments:
My great-uncle George was born in Co Tyrone, Ireland. He was a policeman but decided to emigrate to Canada in 1911. He worked as a surveyor in Ontario. On the outbreak of WWI he joined a militia regiment and enlisting in 1915 was posted to 7th Bde CMGC. He was killed in July 1916 and is buried in Belgium. George wrote home in 1916 "In a family of five brothers I feel at least one should volunteer to fight for his country".
A niece in Scotland and a nephew in Canada were named Georgina and George respectively in his memory. The second George went on to serve in the RCN in WWII.

Thanks for all the work you've done in creating this website.

To Matt Caddo: Unfotunately Matt, if the web master finds out that you are an American, you will have little luck having your Grandfather recognized on the site. I've tried for years. Hopefully our Grandfathers knew each other. My hat is off to your Grandfather.

I assume after being notified of his father's death at Lone Pine Gallipoli he wanted to do a bit more in the War effort than being on the North American Patrol. He sailed to Liverpool aboard the Troop Ship " Empress Of Britain" & was posted to the 12th MG Company and won the Military Medal at the Craters at Vimy Ridge.

I noted that his enlistment papers indicated that he joined the 151 Central Alberta Battalion in 1916 and his discharge papers the 2 C.G.Bn. Research lead me to your site. To say the least I was eladed to see my gradfathers name. You have him listed as wounded in the 2nd Battle of Arras (Scarpe) and little information afterwards. I can supply more info if you would like. (ps.Canadian achives spelled his middle name incorrectly- it should read ANNESLEY) In all an excellent site. Cheers

About four years ago we visited the grave of Charlie Ronayne near Cambrai. It was a most moving time.

This was the purpose of our tour, but in additon we visited Vimy, Arras, the Newfoundland Memorial and Lutyens' British Memorial, and memorials to Australian and New Zealand Soldiers. The loss of lives was astounding, both the allies and the French.

Charlie Ronayne was a cousin of my grand-mother.
I have been trying to find the history of the MM, but as yet, have not been successful.
Great site.

Very interesting site. Thanks for doing this, Brett.
My grandfather (Mike, to his Anglo friends) never spoke about his war experiences. The only story that my father remembered hearing from him was about how awful the war was for the horses!
I have a copy of some of Magnus's military records. I'll look for mention of his going missing. I know he was wounded, and also spent time in a hospital in Scotland.

Brett - hats off to you! An absolutely superb site and a phenomenal effort on your part. As a military historian specialising in the Great War you have just saved me many, many hours of time and effort not to mention the expense of flying to Ottawa!!

I remain absolutely awestruck at the amount of time and effort that you must have put in and I'll be recommending this site for inclusion on the links list of The Centre for First World War Studies (University of Birmingham) I shall also be using it as a document resource for my undergrad students.

Cheers & well done that man!

I am a grand nephew of Pte. Albert Edgar Briggs who served in the 2nd Battalion, 14th Company, CMGC July 19, 1917 to when he was killed east of Arras Aug. 28, 1918. I began researching my great uncle Oct. 2002 starting with his letters to his mother. I've found your website to be extremely useful. I really appreciate your contribution to my research.

I stumbled across this exceptional Web-site when researching Sgt William Murray, D.C.M., 6 Company/2nd Division CMGC. It is a delight to find such a well researched, informative and well presented site. It is a credit to all those who served in the CMGC.
