Lavinia Buce is my G-G-G-Grandmother ~ married to Drury Mote, my G-G-G-Grandfather. My Family Tree is: Lavinia Buce and Drury Mote, parents of Bryant Mote, father of Oceola Bryant Mote, father of Juanita Faye Mote (Beal)(Reed), mother of Clella Judith Reed (Small), who is my mother. Drury Mote was also listed Drewry Mote on census card 2527 for application to Choctaw Nation along with his son James Ripley Mote (IW - white) who had married a Choctaw woman, Letha Ann Brashears. Only Letha Ann and her son Charles were accepted into the Dawes Final Roll from the Census card 2527. Viney, Drewry, and James Ripley Mote were denied, as they were applying for Choctaw through marriage to Letha, and then in the 1850 census he was listed as "Drewery Mote" as well. My Great Grandfather Oceola Bryant Mote had a deed to land in Indian Territory Oklahoma, which his daughter (my grandmother) Juanita Faye Mote Reed had in her possesion, but she has recently passed away and it has not been found again. I was hoping to link my indian heritage, but I have dead ended on proving Viney was of Indian heritage. Only Letha which is of no direct kin to me. I have loved perusing your site - the info is invaluable to me! Thank you, Susan, and all who have posted ~ Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!* (: ~ Lindsay

Anyway, thanks for the site!

I am not directly related to the Buice line but the above Margaret Buice married Cain Abel who is connected to one of my lines. I have found online in a message board posting tht in a book called "Leaves from the family Tree" that the descencants of Cain and Margaret are:
William Jefferson Abel
Mary Right Abel
James Jackson Abel
John Roberson Abel (connected to my line)
Robert Perry Abel
Cain Whitehouse Abel
Does any of these names sound familiar? I have data on the John Roberson Abel line if anyone is interested. I would love to find more on Margaret. You have a great site, I love the way you made me feel like I was touring an ancestor's homeplace. Thanks for the visit, I only wish I had made a pot of coffee and sat a spell. Diana

Hi, I'm not a part of this family tree, nor can I find any connections by marriage, but I wanted to comment on the "Christmas Eve Gift" tradition. It's gone through my family for longer than anyone can seem to remember. It came down through my mother's side, and my grandparents (Naylor/Landfair) were from Mississippi.
When I read the excerpt about the Christmas Eve gift tradition, it's got my family down to a T! We're insanely competitive, with all kinds of treachery cropping up. We've taken to text-messaging when work-days are involved, the ultimate form of deceit. It's a no-holds-barred competition. We don't care WHAT the caller ID says, you could be trying to trick us by calling from another number!
Anyway, we're down in Florida, but the tradition lives! I haven't really found other families that play... at least not to the level we do. We try to spread the joy though. (And get more points from unsuspecting victims)

In preparing for a Genealogy Club presentation about "Christmas" gifting I remembered you started a flurry of memories and e-mail stories about "Christmas Eve Gift" custom.
Our family has played that game for at least 50 years, and I thought my mother dreamt up the "game" just to get more presents! Once my children married, we had to explain the game to their spouses...and it wasn't easy. And so the custom continues. When the Fax machine first became popular, I called one of my daughters to "catch her" and she smugly said "Look at your Faxes Mom" and sure enough, her "Christmas Eve Gift" was date/stamped long before my call...and shortly after midnight on the 24th. Later it was e-mails...with date/stamps to prove who was first. Now my grandchildren are into it, and they have more fun "catching" me. Some years we intentionally got caught. The year my mom's estate was settled, each child (by this time with families of their own) had a special "Christmas Eve Gift from Grandma" hanging on the tree with a much needed check for the growing families. It was a tearful but happy occasion, remembering my mom and how much she enjoyed the game.
Anyhow, with your permission I'd like to use excerpts from your collection in my presentation to the Genealogy Club of Myrtle Beach SC. The traditions seems to have it's roots in "Southern soil" but very few of our members are from SC. The members are mostly retirees from the North and MidWest where the winters are cold and snowy. (We do have snow every now and then but it usually melts after the sun comes up. If you sleep late you don't get to see it!) The ones mentioning George Washington and Robert E. Lee are particularly interesting. And my son-in-laws will realize their grandmother-in-law did not make up the game to get extra gifts! We've had fun with it and it's now into it's 4th generation at least. I'm sure my mom learned it from her mom (born in SC) but do not know how far back it goes in the past.
Thanks again. Wanda

Information on Robert Bruce (found on answers.com)
Robert Bruce was born the first child and eldest son of Robert de Brus, 6th Lord of Annandale, and of Marjorie of Carrick, 3rd Countess of Carrick, daughter of Neil, Earl of Carrick. His mother was by all accounts a formidable woman who, legend would have it, kept Robert Bruce's father captive until he agreed to marriage. From his mother he inherited the Celtic Earldom of Carrick, and from his father a royal lineage that would give him a claim to the Scottish throne. Although his date of birth is definitely known, his place of birth is less certain: it was probably Turnberry Castle in Ayrshire, but Lochmaben in Dumfriesshire has been claimed.
Precious little is known of his youth. He was probably sent to be fostered with a local family, as was the custom. Bruce was raised speaking all the languages of his lineage and nation and was fluent in Gaelic, Scots and Norman French. His youth is said by an English chronicler to have been mostly passed at the court of Edward I. He saw the outcome of the 'Great Cause' in 1292, which gave the Crown of Scotland to his families' great rival, John Balliol, as unjust. As he saw it, it prevented his family from taking their rightful place on the Scottish throne.
Soon afterwards, his grandfather, Robert Bruce, 5th Lord of Annandale - the unsuccessful claimant - resigned his lordship to his son, Bruce's father. Already on his wife's death in 1292, he had resigned the earldom of Carrick to his son, the future king. Both father and son sided with Edward I against Balliol. In April 1294, the younger Bruce had permission to visit Ireland for a year and a half and, as a further mark of Edward's favour, he received a respite for all the debts owed by him to the English Exchequer.
In 1295, Robert married his first wife, Isabella of Mar, the daughter of Donald, 6th Earl of Mar. Isabella died a year later bearing their only child, Marjorie Bruce, who married Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland and bore him the future Robert II of Scotland. In July, Edward I launched his sixth campaign into Scotland. Though Edward captured Bothwell and Turnberry Castle, Edward did little to damage the Scots’ fighting ability and, in January 1302 agreed to a nine-month truce. It was around this time that Robert the Bruce submitted to Edward I, along with other nobles, even though he had been on the side of the patriots until now. There are many reasons which may have prompted his turning, not the least of which was that Bruce may have found it loathsome to continue sacrificing his followers, family and inheritance for John Balliol. There were rumours that Balliol would return with a French army and regain the Scottish throne. Soulis supported the return of Balliol as did many other nobles, but the return of John as king would lead to the Bruces losing any chance of ever gaining the throne themselves. Also, Robert’s father was old and ill, and may have wished his son to seek peace with Edward, who, he was convinced, would be victorious over the Scots. The elder Bruce would have seen that, if the rebellion failed and his son were against Edward, he would lose everything, titles, lands, and probably his life. Edward also came to see that he needed a Scottish noble like Bruce as a friend, rather than as an enemy at this time; he was facing both excommunication by the Pope for his actions and a possible invasion by the French.
However, though recently pledged to support Edward, it is interesting to note that Robert the Bruce sent a letter to the monks at Melrose Abbey in March 1302 which effectively weakened his usefulness to the English king. Apologizing for having called the monks to service in his army when there had been no national call up, Bruce pledged that, henceforth, he would “never againö require the monks to serve unless it was to “the common army of the whole realm,ö for national defence. Bruce also married his second wife that year. Elizabeth de Burgh was the daughter of Richard Og de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster. By Elizabeth he had four children: David II, John, Matilda, and Margaret (who married William, Earl of Sutherland).

I have been trying to research my Buse/Hopkins line. I'm hoping that maybe you can help. My great great grandmother Amanda Buse married J.T. Hopkins Oct 12 1882 in Lee County Mississippi. We've heard that he was a doctor and that he died. They had 3 children(Harvey, Winburn and Lula Evalee). She remarried in 1900 to William Richard Buse. Do you have any info on this family? Specifically Lula. She had 4 children ( Oron, Joseph Hightower and Clara and Ralph). They all had the name Hopkins like Lula which makes me think she either married another Hopkins or never married and had them out of wedlock. We know that Lula was born Sept 2,1883 . This would have made her about 16 or 17 when her mother remarried to Dick Buse. I've wondered if he was the father. Any info you might have would be helpful(even if my suspicions do turn out to be true).
My grandfather Joseph Hightower Hopkins was born Oct 3, 1907 in Tupelo, Lee County Mississippi. He married Mary Della Robison b.March 8, 1912 on June 12, 1930 in Winder, GA.

Nathaniel is my maternal grandfather. He had 7 brothers and 4 sisters. His mother was part Cherokee(?). There are plenty of Buseys listed in the Shelby county vital records and US Census's. Amongst his siblings there are at least
4 spellings of Busey(Beausey, Bussey, Busee, etc.) Two of his brothers went to California, and should be listed in the California Death Index. One other, Harko, wento to NJ and we found him in a census there. One of his sisters went to Long Island and was living the last time we were in touch.
I have just embarked on making a family tree. My mother, his daughter, is 94 and I want to complete as much as possible while I have her help. Some of difficulty in locating Bucey's may relate to the fact that many of this family "passed(as white)" for employment purposes and didn't leave much tracks of information about where they came from.
Just this weekend, I discovered many Busey's in the Kentucky records. Some got original land grants for service in the Revolutionary war, some bought land, some made money in KY and went to Indiana, MN, Il, and OH.
Our part of the family is black. Some of the records I located this weekend lead me to believe that some Buseys in VA went west to KY and sowed a lot of
seeds. All of my research is informal, as I have not documented my info. Because my mother remembers all of his siblings names, it should be only a matter of time. No matter how Busey is spelled, it is fairly easy to find. Good luck. I will inform her of the Buce reunion and this site. Carole Cromwell, cycromwell@yahoo.com

Loved your site! So well organized and very attractive!
While reading in the closet, I found the William Riley Buse cane tripping episode very familiar. My great uncle George Buse used to do the same thing! He thought it was funny. Thankfully nobody ever got hurt! He also used to use the hook part of the cane to reel us kids in when we were being "little devils". We learned very fast to stay out of reach of that cane!

Greetings! I read your article in the Rootsweb Newsletter about the tradition of 'Christmas Eve Gift' greetings. My family celebrated the holidays with this game which my grandmother shared. We started at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve until 6 a.m. Christmas Day when the greeting changed to 'Christmas Gift' and lasted until 6 p.m. The tradition originated in the South. I have some history of it if you are interested. Email me.
Happy holidays,

My family has been doing the "Christmas Eve Gift" game for as long as I can remember. Don't know if it came from my Mom's side (Stone/Garrison from NM, MO, TN, NC, VA) or my Dad's side (Brown/Fitch from TX, AR, TN, NC). If I had to guess I would say it is a "southern" thing.
You have a nice web site.
