Amazed at how much interest there now is in the Bridgham name. We missed the reunion in Maine several years ago but hope to make this one. My father's name was Charles Burr Bridgham II. He grew up in Cohasset with his grandfather, Charles Burr Bridgham, who had moved there from Maine. I have a brother in Miami, Charles Burr Bridgham IV, and his son is the V.

I've been doing the family history thing on and off for years now. The local Office Max is going out of business and they had Family Tree Maker 2009 on sale for practically nothing. It got me interested again. Any contact with other Bridghams would be interesting. There are actually many here in Maine, but our actual relationship to one another tends to be a bit blurry.

Name: Elaine Pavone <thepavones@comcast.net> Date: 2007-03-04 How did you find this website? Refdesk.com google search How are you related? My son-in-law is descended from Mary BRIDGUM Comments:
RE: MARY BRIDGUM and THOMAS BENEDICT.
It wasn't until sometime in the 1800s that people became proprietary about the spelling, etc. of their name. I have a Mitchell forebear, for instance, who spelled his name three different ways in the same handwritten document. Mary herself, however, did report her name as being spelled Bridgum NOT Bridgeham/Bridgham. I, too, find flaws in the research showing Mary Bridgham being the wife of Thomas Benedict.
There is lots of conjecture on Thomas's origins, but no real proof. Until I see data that absolutely refutes the information given orally by Mary Bridgum Benedict to her grandson James, I will continue to believe the three Williams ancestry. After all, Mary should certainly have known the names of both her husband Thomas's father and grandfather, and the county in England from which she and her husband emigrated!
Also, there were very important, very wealthy, and very large Benedictine communities in Nottinghamshire at a time when surnames were often derived from the location in which people resided, or their occupation. This information seems to be conveniently left out of the research. Also, wills have been found for the Georges, but the one that would prove the link between George Jr. and William to Thomas is also conveniently missing.
Add to this the following information taken from "Griselia of Snotinghscire [Nottinghamshire]" by Rudolph Baron von Hube - 1907 (http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/vonhube1910/watnall2.htm)
" Malgern de Rolleston, who was a benefactor to the Monastery of Rufford, on which he bestowed 40 acres of land. Thomas, son of Malger, held two knight’s fees of Walter d’Aincourt. Henry, son of Thomas de Rolleston confirmed to the Monastery of Rufford all that his grandfather Malger had given to it. Thomas, son of Henry, and Benedict, son of Thomas de Rolleston, in like manner confirmed to Rufford Malger de Rolleston’s gift. Benedict de Rolleston was a Knight, who gave and confirmed to the Church of St. Peter at Thurgarton, &c., several lands (at that time in the tenure of several persons) so absolutely that neither he nor any of his heirs might subsequently be able to challenge any aid of the said tenants, natives or villains, whether to make his eldest son a Knight, or to marry his eldest daughter; and the Lady Dimysia, wife of Benedict de Rolleston, released her dower in the same lands."
Those with knowledge of patrilineal naming systems will see that it is possible that "Benedict, son of Thomas de Rolleston (a place name - in the County of Stafford) might well have been known as 'Benedict Thomas'; and if he named a son Thomas after his father that son might have been known as Thomas (son of) Benedict. I am willing to admit that this is also conjecture on my part, but to say that NO Benedicts EVER lived in Nottinghamshire seems to be flawed at the least.
Further, the following can be found in "Cambridge County Geographies, Nottinghamshire" by H. H. Swinnerton, 1810 at http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/swinnerton1910/chapter18.htm:
"From the earliest times Christianity has had men who have devoted their lives to preaching its messages to and organising its worship for the public. To them we owe the Collegiate (now Cathedral) Church at Southwell, and practically all the parish churches.
Holme Church.
Distinct from such men were the monks, who lived a life of seclusion in monasteries and ordered their lives according to severe rules. In the sixth century Benedict reformed and reorganised the system in Western Europe. Thus arose the Benedictine Order, which had a large priory in this county at Blyth. In the tenth and eleventh centuries new Orders were founded with similar and often stricter rules. The great priory at Lenton belonged to the Cluniacs, whose parent institution was at Cluny. The Carthusians, whose order was founded at La Chartreuse near Grenoble, had an establishment at Beauvale. The Cistercians, who had an abbey at Rufflrd, came from Citeaux (Cistertium) in Burgundy."
. . .
There is a person/researcher who is convinced in spite of Mary's first hand report to her grandson James, that Thomas's grandfather was a George Benedict. He has researched many records in England; however, even he never says POSITIVELY in his material that any of his research disproves with CERTAINTY Mary Bridgum/Bridgeham's history of the family. HIs research can be found at Rootsweb.com

I had the pleasure of walking the fields and streets of Bridgham, Norfolk, England, while there searching for traces of Mary's family and Thomas Benedict's. Beautiful village. Talked to an old gentleman tending his incredible vegetable garden at the fork of the road. Brought back samples of the abundant flint used for stone fences, and house and church walls, plus many photographs of the area.

Dear All,
For the last 5 years with fellow villager Tony Dobbin, I have been writing a history of the last 1,000 years of life in Bridgham. I hope it to be out this year or next. We were only thinking of publishing 500 copies for local interest, but if the Bridgham family are interested then it would be a good idea to increase the run. Do let me know if you would like a copy. I don't think Henry's father would have given himself the name Bridgham as surnames were well established by then. The only reason you can't go back further is that parish regiters only started in the mid 16th century. The survey of Bridgham in 1251 shows hardly anyone to have a surname, a few are named after their place of origin. I suspect the name started as a surname about 1250 to 1350, so you have a 200 year gap to fill at least! My wife's family bridged this gap through land holding documents rather than church records. All the best for the research. David O'Neale

First, your web site is very impressive. As to how we are related I believe that one of the sons of William Robertson who married Mary Eliz Martin was my grandfathers grandfather. My Grandfather's father was William James Robertson. We have a picture in the family labeled The Robertson Boys of Leyden MA with the boys names labled and + three girls. The names match the names of William and Mary's 7 boys. Additionally my father and grandparents used to visit relatives in Leyden. Leyden has a "Robertson Memorial Library" given by one of the sons, James who until today was my leading candidate for great great grandpa - the photo in the library leaves no doubt there is some relation! However today I found my great grandfather's death certificate and his father's name is John, wife's last name Laughlin (first name somewhat illegible - maybe Katherine) which is what is given as John Henry's wife's name on your site. Sorry for the babbling. Can you tell me how the info on the family of William Robertson, your number 236 came to be on the site, and possibly give me a lead to more information? Thank you. As I write this, on August 9, 2003, there is a pending foreclosure auction of what is now a 52 acre estate with approximately 6,000 sq. ft. manor house in the extended New England farmhouse style; a 2 BR, 1 BA cottage; a "bunk house" w/o facilities; a garden shed and greenhouse; a two car garage; a stone pool; and other amenities of interest on "Bridgham Hill Road" in Sullivan, Maine. I noted with interest the fact that a "Sullivan Brigham" is part of the family tree. Does anyone know whether a member of the family once owned this estate (or gave the family name to this road)? The central portion of the manor hourse (there have been five segmented sections added over the years) has a fireplace that appears to be 150-200 years old. The auction is scheduled for September 12, 2003, if you are interested. I have all of the information.

I've been researching the origins of both Thomas and Mary for more than 50 years. Almost all about them on Rootsweb (and elsewhere) is incorrect. Mary's mother is still unknown, but her father was probably John Bridgham (parents unknown). Mary was born in 1624 and died in 1724 (Norwalk, Connecticut). After the death of Mary's mother, John Bridgham apparently married Elizabeth, the widow of Thomas' father, William, in Woolpit, Suff., Engl. I will be in England all of Sept 2003, attempting to nail this all down with original records. Mary and Thomas came to Salem, MBC, in Aug 1637 on the "Mary & Anne" (not on the "Confidence") and were married, probably by Rev John Youngs, in either Salem, or Southold, Long Island, about 1639.

Now that I have read this very interesting history of the Bridgham Clan, I am a bit chagrinned. I have only seen my husband, Joel Bridgham, for fleeting moments of time...usually at the dinner table. For the past three years he has spent nearly all his free time in our office in front of the computer. SO you see I naturally thought he was having an affair with some cyber chick. It looks like I can now contact my divorce lawyers (U. Cheatem and Howe) to cancel the divorce papers and call off the Chickadee Brother's Private Investigation firm. It looks like his time at the computer has been legitimate all along. I guess he was telling me the truth after all. (There must be a lesson for me in this somehow.)
