thought I'd say hello on here as well while researching my family tree. Nice to see they have named a lane after the old family. Searching for family led me to Chatteris, My, there was a lot about in the 1800's. I have found more than I thought I would. Having said that I have been successful in getting back to the parents of one of my ancestors born in 1793 but there we stop. Maybe for a while anyway.
God Luck on keeping your site as good as it is

I'm helping my friend with her family tree. Her grandfather James Abbott according to the 1911 census was born in St Neots about 1884. He died in Addenbrooks in 1938 aged 54. Apart from his marriage certificate 6.7.1907 to Ellen Elizabeth Fuller which states his father's name is also James, I can find no other information for him. Ellen Fuller was the daughter of Louisa Fuller who then married William Maltman. If any one has any information I would be most grateful

My Grandmother was Annie Maltman Jackson, daughter of Bub and John Maltman Jackson. Johns mother, Martha Jackson never married John Maltman, though they had 5 children together and John had been married before meeting Martha, and married after Martha had died - we had believed Jackson to have been Martha's maiden name, but have recently discovered that she had been married to a Henry Jackson of Whittlesey, who had treated her so cruelly that Martha had left him, taking their child, Henry Jackson junior, to become John Maltmans housekeeper - they could not marry because Martha was already married - mystery solved - however, of those 5 children born to John Maltman and Martha Jackson (nee Palmer, we now know) who were known as Maltman Jackson, as was the custom with unmarried parents, some of their descendents have dropped the Maltman and some have dropped the Jackson from their surnames - think about it - those who have dropped the Maltman from their surname and are called Jackson have no Jackson blood in them, Martha was a Palmer, Jackson was the name of her cruel husband, no blood ties.
Today we looked around Chatteris, sadly we could find no gravestones at the church, but were entranced by the old fashioned beauty of Chatteris, particularly the Church.
Anyone with connections to the Maltmans, Jacksons or Maltman Jacksons please do not hesitate to contact me at Portontorton@aol.com for exchanges of information.

We recently came across the family bible that belonged to my mother in law. We had always known her side of the family came from England, however, no other details. But, in the bible we just discovered, it was inscribed to John and Lydia Laws on their marriage on October 28, 1868 by the Reverend M.A. Gathercole, Vicar of Chatteris. I am assuming that either John or Lydia lived in Chatteris and was possibly born there, but have been unable to find any further records of such. Can you possibly help us? Thank you for your consideration.

Hello
I am desperately trying to find information on my deceased mother, Nellie Richardson born Nellie/Ellen Lawrence. Mum grew up in Chatteris and lived I believe at 15 West Street, she was an only child, knowing Walter John Lawence as her father and her mother was Beatice ne้ Beatrice Miller. Grandad worked at the cemetry in Long Road as a gardener.
From something my late father once said, I get the gist that maybe mum was "given" to the 2 people mum knew as mum & dad for I can find nothing of mum's birth but she went to Cromwell School? so surely there must be something about her somewhere in Chatteris?
Three times a year I visit my grandparents grave, there is a simple stone on the grave with just "Walter & Beatrice Lawrence", no dates - nothing!
I don't suppose you can give me any advice or help on finding her can you? So much to hide in those days!
Thank you so much for your time in reading this e-mail.

Dear Chatteris Museum. I am hoping to visit you this summer and at the same time catch up on some research into my family tree. My gggrandfather John Bearcock was a clockmaker in chatteris and had a workshop and shop on the corner of the high street - the family were resident in the town since the 1500's. I have so far traced one of his long case clocks in Ely and a photo of it. I have a parish news letter that the church clock was maintained and made by him but removed about 50 years ago and replaced. I would love to know if you have any information on my family in your museum. If not I have an old photo of the shop and my gggrandfather John Bearcock which I can copy and send to you if you are interested. Some of his sons became carpenters and gunsmiths. Thank you.

I'm researching James Goodale and his wife Sarah who was the publican at The Wheat Sheaf in Chatteris in the 1861 Census. Can anyone give me info on the Wheatsheaf or the Goodales. I find them in the 1871 Census living in Basingstoke and it appears that James has changed his name to Thomas Clarke, but not officially as far as I can see. Does anyone with local knowledge know of any reason why they might have moved so far away and changed names ? (escaping the law etc.)
This little puzzle is driving me crazy so any help would be appreciated.

Having bought the CD- rom of parish records, it seems pretty definite that my 3xgreat-grandfather is the Joseph Stocks who was responsible for the death of his brother-in-law, William Lambe, in 1830 - see newspaper clippings. May I apologise on the family's behalf to all remaining Lamb(e)s? Joseph may alos have been a bigamist - he left wife Hannah (if they were actually married) - in Chatteris and had another wife and family in London!

Isaac was born approx 1821 and died (I believe) in 1901 after the 1901 census was taken. I have located him also on the 1891 and 1901 census where he lived on ANCHOR STREET. He also had at least two daughters, one was Jemima (my great-grandmother) and another daughter named Jane who probably never married. Could you tell how I might locate his grave? Henry migrated to Sydney, in the then Colony of New South Wales, (NSW) on the Emmaö after a voyage from Liverpool. Henry was an assisted immigrant, paying One Pound for his passage. Henry arrived in Sydney on 31st January 1857.
The Sydney based 1857 shipping records indicate that Henry was 24 years old, a farm labourer, unable to read or write and of good health on his arrival. The shipping records also state Henrys Native Place/Countryö was Upwood, Huntingdon and that his parents, George to Janeö were living at Upwood. This is confirmed by Henrys Death Certificate in Australia.
My examination of the English 1851 Census show Henrys parents, George and Jane, were living at Daintree Drove, in the Parish of Ramsey, a small distance from Upwood. These census records also indicate George, aged 45, was born at Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. The 1851 Census also indicates Henry had two sisters, Sarah, aged 8 and Lucia, aged 3, both scholars. Maybe there were other siblings.
On Census night 1851, Henry then aged 17, appears to be working as an agricultural labourer, for one Christopher Mawdesley, a landed proprietor/ farmer 220 acresö, of Warlick, Ramsey.
The 1841 Census Index Records show Henry, aged 8, probably living with his parents most likely in the Parish of Ramsey. The same records show a number of Guntons living close proximity.
As the 1841 and 1851 Census records for Ramsey and Chatteris also show a number of Gunton family groups, I can only speculate, at this stage, on the relationship between Henrys parents and these other families, no doubt they are most likely related in some way.
2. Henry George Gunton in Australia, 1857 to 1905, and My Line of his Descendants.
It appears that Henry quickly settled in the township of Richmond, NSW, 60 kilometres north west of Sydney in the rich agricultural Hawkesbury Valley. He was apparently involved in a number of agricultural pursuits including leather tanning and farming. Henry was also involved in contracting, including providing a large number of horses and drays for construction of approach earthworks for the original Brooklyn (Peats Ferry) Bridge part of the main road north out of Sydney.
Henry married Elizabeth Hansell, of Richmond, within four years of arriving in the district, they had nine children, including my grandfather, Joseph George Gunton, born 1877 at Richmond.
Henry died at Richmond on 31 August 1905. He earnt the respect of his adopted community during the 48 years he lived in Australia.
Joseph married Eliza Douglas, a direct descendent of two First Fleet convicts, William Douglas and Mary Grove. Joseph and Eliza had four children: Harry Thompson, born 1908, died 1926; Jennifer Elizabeth (known to me as Auntie Jean), born 1910 deceased 2000; Dorothy Ellie (Auntie Ellie), born 1916, now aged 88 (Ellie still lives next door in Richmond) and my late father Rex Belgium Gunton, born 21 October 1914, died 13 March 1995, who lived in Richmond all his life.
Joseph lived and worked all his life around the Richmond area, mainly working for the Hawkesbury Agricultural College at Richmond as a farm labourer and similar occupations.
My father married my mother, Doris Elsie Parish on 4 October 1943. I am an only child, born 11 April 1950.
My Request
any information you can provide or other readers could provide would be most appreciated.

Thank you for your efforts. My gg grandmother, Susan Gunton, was born in Chatteris 19 Sept 1819, information I got from her tombstone. I have yet to find a record. Her parents were John and Catherine Gunton who all immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1831 along with Mathew and Margaret Barrons Gunton and their children. I do not know their relationship. There are clearly a lot of Guntons in this area. I would be most grateful if anyone with information on this family would contact me.

Harry moved to London, married my grandmother and the rest, so they say, is history. I am trying to get a "handle" on Charles Simmons (or Sammons) Seekings. He emigrated to the USofA in about 1900, married, and had a son also called Charles. Charles (jnr) was a GI during WW2 and met both my father and other family living in the London area when he came over to this country prapatory to D-Day. All trace of this branch of the family has eluded me.

Great Site.
We have just recently found out that my husbands GrGrGr Grandparents, John & Elizabeth Wykes, lived in Chatteris from 1808 to 1818, then moved to Godmanchester, where our direct descendants migr
ated from.
A few weeks ago I had not even heard of Chatteris, could not find much on the net about it and was just going to ask the mail list for info and your message came through.
We will visit the town when we get to England
Karen Wykes.

As a former born and raised person from Whittlesey I spent some time in Chatteris playing soccer. I left in 1954 after being married and in 1968 landed here in Canada. At this time I am retired and trying to find out about my ancestors.
My grandfather was born in 1870 but I cant find his birth certificate and the only CHARLES LAXON in the 1881 census was in the NorthWitchford Union House in Doddington aged 11 a pauper but his birthcertificate doesnt have the same father as his marriage cert. So I am lost at the moment trying to find my ggf. I do know that my gf. was in charge of police in Whittlesey until 1916 when he died.
However it was interesting to see reference to Chatteris where I also played the bugle in the Whittlesey Army Cadets band.
Good luck.

I love your work. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Chatteris. No one here knows where it is.
Hope you can clue me in on the origins of these
families. They are my mother's ancestors. I am
curious to know where she came by her artistic and musical gifts. All her 8 children inherited them.
