Came To Patrick County, Virginia From by division from Henry 1785 from Wilkes County, North Carolina
Moved From Patrick County, Virginia To between 1805 and 1807 to Campbell Co. TN
Comments:
Samuel first appears in the tax records of Surry Co., NC from 1771 through 1777. In 1778 he applied for a land patent in Wilkes Co. NC on the S Fork of the Mitchell's river his property bordered the Surry Co. line. A Lawsuit filed by the William Ridge estate followed Samuel's movement from 1780 through 1807 or 8. Court records were found in Henry Co. VA. Then court and Tax records were found in Patrick Co. VA until 1805. Court records were found 1806 in Claiborne Co. and by 1807 he was in Campbell Co, again I suspect by division. The William Ridge estate lawsuit mentions depositions to be taken from Capt. Samuel Crutchfield in Patrick Co in 1797. Samuel Crutchfield in 1807 & 1808 in Campbell Co. Samuel disappeared from the court records of Campbell Co. in 1813. The William Ridge estate lawsuit is on file at the NC Archives.

In the 1850 census of Patrick county we find that Samuel Sneed Sr. lives next to James Foley and his wife Judith, I know that the son of Samuel-John T. and his family show up in Mercer county in the 1860 census as well as the son of James Foley-Richard B. Foley. I am assuming they were friends who moved their families together into the new lands opening in the Mercer area. Samuel Sneed's son Samuel Jr. also married a Mary Foley, although I don't know at this point in time who Mary Foley was exactly the daughter of...

Name Of Family Head and Wife Cornelius Hopkins and Dorcus Thacker Hopkins
Came To Patrick County, Virginia From Dorcus from Pittsylvania County, VA
Moved From Patrick County, Virginia To Pike County, KY 1822
Comments:
Cornelius and Dorcus migrated to Pike County, KY as assignees of a Kentucky Land Grant originally issued to Dorcus' brother Reuben Thacker. In 1824, Cornelius returned to Patrick County to transfer his property to his brother James and then return to Pike County. At least three children came with Cornelius and Dorcus: Elisha, Elizabeth, and Matilda. Several more children were born in Pike County. Elisha, my ggggrandfather, was born in Patrick County in 1815; he died in Pike County in 1909. He had several children by each of four relationships or marriages. His two brothers, Joseph and Columbus, fought on opposite sides during the Civil War, with Joseph dying in a federal prison camp after his capture by federal forces while his unit was defending the mountain passes guarding Saltville, VA October 1, 1864.

Name Of Family Head and Wife Lewis Viers and Nancy

Comments:
The 1850 Russell Co. census lists Lewis Viers as a farmer from Patrick Co. His date of birth-Feb.20,1858 and date of death-June 18, 1904. The family story has him running from a feud, but I cannot find anything on the Viers family in Patrick Co. Lewis enlisted in the Confederate Army in Russell Co. in 1863. He and his wife-Mary F. Gothard are buried in the Viers cemetery in Haysi in Dickenson Co. Va.

Name Of Family Head and Wife Joshua Roberts and Elizabeth Smith (dau Bartlett Smith)
Came To Patrick County, Virginia From Joshua from either NC or KY; Elizabeth from Patrick Co.
Moved From Patrick County, Virginia To Lewis County, MO August 1834
Comments:
Joshua married Elizabeth Smith on 15 December 1820 in Patrick County; the family is enumerated in Patrick County in 1830. Land was sold by Joshua and Elizabeth in December 1830 and 1 April 1834. On August 24, 1834, Joshua took out land - Lewis County Land Records, citing his previous residence in Patrick County, VA.

Elizabeth died c. 1835-1838 and Joshua remarried 1. Nancy Agnes Davis, 2. Elizabeth and 3. Sophia. By 1880, Joshua was a widower residing in the home of his oldest daughter, Jane and her husband, Jonathan Burgess, in Grayson Co., TX. He evidently moved to Grayson County c. 1874/75. We believe he died in Grayson County, possibly near Ethel.
