Lorenzo D. Young is my 3rd g.grandfather. As I've learned more about him the last few years, I been fascinated by his relationship with the Decker Family, and the Decker family's intertwining with the Young family.
I was searching for information on the Kirtland Safety Soceity, to see if anyone had chronicled Isaac Decker's involvement in helping the Prophet, when I came across a link to your site.
My lineage is through Lorenzo & Persis' son John R. He traveled to Utah in 1847 in the Jedediah M. Grant Company, with his brothers Joseph Watson and Franklin Wheeler. Also in the company were Charles Franklin Decker and his wife Vilate, and Harriet Amelia Decker Little.
Persis was pregnant during the exodus from Far West. Lorenzo had fled to Iowa because of his involvement in the Battle of Crooked River. He then made his way to Exeter, Ill., and rented a one room cabin. Isaac and Harriet took Persis and her kids with them when they left Far West. They crossed the Mississippi on the ice and arrived at Exeter the first part of February, 1839. A few days after their arrival, Persis gave brith, and named him in honor of Harriet's family, her maiden name and her son's name.
There must have been a tremendous bond between these women, and also between their husbands.
Shortly after Isaac & Harriet arrived at Exeter with Persis, Lorenzo's brother Joseph and his family arrived, and a week later Lorenzo & Joseph's father, John, and one of his grandson's arrived. Over 20 people were staying in that one room cabin.
I learned much from your site. I'm glad you included Wayne's story, even if he won't answer your emails.
I live in Roosevelt, Utah. 435-722-9900.
Sure we're kin. Harriet is my step-grandmother.

I made a mistake in my Guestbook entry a couple of days ago. I said I was related through Lucy Ann Decker's son William--but that's her baby that died. I'm though the Isaac Joseph Seely line, through his Don Ralph son. That's just the least of it, considering all of the near-kin marriages into similar family lines. Just heard of the upcoming new online genealogy upgrade coming on the lds.org website--it sounds like things will be so much better. Poor Lucy Ann has been sealed so many times and in so many temples to both William Seely and Brigham Young--I hope there's no fighting going on for her over there! See you, Cousin.

I'm related through both the Lucy Ann Decker Seely line (my Mom's maiden name was Seely, descended from Lucy's son William) as well as the Fisher and Neff lines. It's 1:00 a.m. my time (Virginia) right now, and I should be in bed--but this is such a great link. I'd have to get out my genealogy records to tell you where I relate (and I don't even know who 'you' are yet)--but this is above cool! I have been trying to see if Lucy's baby boy that died in infancy was sealed to her. Lots I'd like to know. Enough for now, but will search through here more, as time permits. Please write me if you can. Fran

I replied your email last year or two years ago. I know you did respond to me back. Sorry, I had not replied your message for long time since I was so busy with my boys, Elias James & Preston George.
Ok, Thomas Willets and Mary Browne Willets was correct. Mary Browne Willets was NOT daughter of John Browne and she was sister of John Browne. I can show you 1636 passenger list of Mass. Thomas Willet, John Browne, Dorothy Kent and Mary Browne were on the listed as passengers. Another Mary Browne was a daughter of John Browne. She was also buried at Little Neck, RI. Mary Browne may married to George Downing and they had only son, George, Jr. Mary Browne died after George, Jr. was born in 1668. George Jr married Mary Coles, a grandaughter of Samuel Gorton (founder of Warwick, RI). George Downing and Mary Browne were my 12x great grandparent. Mary Browne was born 1636 and died 1668. George Downing, Jr was born 1668 in Providence, RI and died 1735 in Oyster Bay. I know Mary Browne Willets died in 1669. Thats why, people were confused two Mary Browne.
Other thing, We think Mary Browne may not actually married to George Downing because her name still "Mary Browne" and she may had affair with Sir George Downing, a ambassdor of Holland under King Charles II. Sir George Downing had a wife and children in England. George travelled from New Amsterdam and New Haven, CT because of West Indies Company and negogiation between Dutch and England over New Amsterdam and Long Island. Sir George Downing was cousin of John Winthrop, Jr and nephew of John Winthrop, Sr.
Some sources stated that Sir George Downing was born in Watertown, MA... That was suppsoed to be Mary Browne was born in Watertown, MA in 1636 not George. However, George Downing did lived with Winthrop Family in Watertown while George attended Harvard University from 1640-1644 before lives in CT between 1644-1646.
I can share with you Willets Family of Long Island from 1600's to 1800's. Thomas Willets and Mary Browne Willets's son Thomas Jr settled in Long Island. Thomas Willets, Jr. family was expanded in Long Island from 1600's to 1800's like our Downings. We have Willets/Downing information and a photo of Charles Downing Willets in 1850's.
I will be happy to show you the sources about Willets, Downing and other families of Long Island.
Keep in touch...
Brant Charles Downing, 12x great grandson of Mary Browne (jr) and George Downing.

Your information was mistaken.
Mary Brown Willet was the brother of John Brown the Younger not daughter. Look at Mary's tombstone carefully... It stated Mary died in 1669 at age 65 which means she was born in 1604. John the Younger was born in 1601. Thomas Willet and Mary Browne got married July 1636 in MA as same year as John the Younger's daughter, Mary Browne, was born March 24, 1636 in Watertown, MA.
John the Younger and Mary's parent was John Browne the Eldest (1573-1618) and Margaret.
There was confusion about two Mary Browne's. There was a photo of little tombstone was buried next to John Browne the Younger was Mary Browne Downing, a daughter of John Browne (1636-1668). Both Mary died in almost same year, Mary B. Willet died in 1669 and Mary B. Downing died in 1668. Mary Browne married our Geoffrey (George) Downing in 1657. They had children, Amey, Benjamin and George. George and Mary Browne settled Oyster Bay, Long Island in 1668 but they returned to Rhode Island because of Dutch-English War over Long Island. Mary died when she had George the Younger. George was my 11x Great Grandfahter. George the Eldest and Mary Browne were my 12x great grandparent. George the Younger returned to Long Island in 1680 and married to Samuel Gorton's granddaughter Mary Coles.
Our Downing continued to grow throughout decades in Long Island until late 1800's. Downing moved to West from Michigan to Colorado and California. Downings married to Long Island wives - Surnames are Coles, Valentine, Hopkins, Powell, Kirby, Howland, Burtis, Searings, Townsend, Underhill, Seaman, Carpenter, Weeks and Wright. I know Thomas Willet knows Seaman Family. Those Surnames also originally from Rhode Island and Mass.
My second son will be born this March. His name will be Preston George Downing.
I will be happy to share my Downing info with you and CLEAR UP the record!
12x greatgrandson of George Downing and Mary Browne.

Just a shout out to a very distant cousin. Thomas and Mary (Browne) Willett are my 9G grandparents. I descend from Samuel and Mary (Willett) Hooker's son Daniel. I believe that makes us eighth cousins once removed. I live in Rhode Island, a brief drive from Ancient Little Neck Cemetery. Just visited today, so the Willetts were on my mind, which prompted my Web search that yielded your page.

I recently returned from New York City and was able to view some WILLETT materials. The book on film was very hard to read so didn't spend too much time on it - Captain Thomas Willet (The First Mayor of New York) by Thomas Clapp Cornell, Yonkers, N.Y. I also viewed the book about Mary Browne but also found that online through Genealogy.com.
Enjoyed your site very much which I told you in an earlier email.

I surfed on in trying to find info on Isaac Munroe of Danvers, and I found a whole new branch of the family here in New Hampshire! I have info on the Andrew Munroe family of Danvers/Peabody - he was a Major in the revolution (but too young to have participated in the battle on the Green. He was born in Lexington, was about 11 at the time of the battle. I bet he was peeking from behind a stone wall, though! I live in NH, too, and will have to drop by Hillsborough to check out the burial ground.

Andy,
My good man. I have love your parents so much for all that they have given to that part of my life in the San Bernardino area. They were the ideal couple and I recall the times that I was invited into your home. It seem that it was a libary of ideas and books of great history. They always were very kind to me as my Father was not a member of the church at that time and I knew little of the Gospel. That all came with the goodness of the many Saints in this area and I will always be indeated to them. Even if my spelling is off I m not ashame to give praise of the joy they gave so much to me for it was of their influents that rounded my person in the church. Again Thank you for recalling those events. Your Brother Walt.

Thanks for the update Do you know of Montel Seely, a sheep rancher, who lives in Castledale, Ut? He told me how the Seely spelling got changed to Seeley, here in Utah, which by the way he refers to the 'apostate group! I believe he said it was a great cousin who had 'no learning' and decided to go to school. He didn't know how to spell his last name so his teacher stepped up to the plate and spelled it Seeley! He is credited with saying it looked good to him, and so you have it.
Montel, I spoke with him on the phone, seems extremely nice and appartently is big on geneaology. He is supposed to send me the date of the next Seely reunion.
Also, have you noticed that between Grandpa Seely and me there are at least 2-3 different spellings of Mclain, Mclean and one other on his tombstone or in program of Aunt Verna's funeral. I will confirm.
Why in the world are you moving to Utah?
When do you expect to move into your new home in Layton and what is going on with Sylvan??
We have our home for sale and will move back home to San Diego as soon as it sells. Just went through your old homestead-San Berdo- this past week.
Trust all is well with you and family.

Yes, Andy, I was really impressed by the obvious thoroughness and enthusiasm shown on your various pages... Thank you, though, for giving me the URL to this guestbook, as I had a problem - could not get back to the original page where you give Jim Willett much credit for what you know about the Willett's. I like to think of Jim as THE authority on the Willett's of North America, but one connection I have in Texas (descended through the Tennessee Willett's, as I am) says he is totally wrong when he says emphatically that Capt. Thomas and Col. Marinus are not related. He says, however, that Col. Marinus is descended from another Willett branch which has been on these shores LONGER than Capt. Thomas's - if that is possible (!). I like to think that Thom and Marinus were something like grandfather and grandson, but will accept the truth when I see it. My modern-day cousin, Paul Jordan-Smith, (and whose two pics I sent you yesterday) paid for some genealogical research (granted, long before the days of the Internet) which "proved" the connection between Thom and Marinus. But we shall see....
Incidentally fear not that you may have some Willett rednecks lurking in the south. I know them - mainly second-hand - as a truly genteel bunch of well-off southerners with roots in SW Virginia as well as TN. Paul Jordan-Smith (he of the photos) started out as a U.U. minister and lecturer in Chicago, and ended up as literary editor of the LA Times. Margaret Mitchell credited him with having nominated her for both the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes. Paul's father was a Methodist minister in SW Virginia, and wrote columns for the Atlanta Constitution, etc., etc.
So, YES, Andy, if I can be of any help to you I shall do my best. Again, you have a VERY interesting and informative group of pages, and I feel I shall be returning there very often! (Merovingians and Plantagenets here I come!)
Happy hunting,
M@rty
