Comments:
Thank you Jane for all the hard work you have done in putting this information together! Have searched all the info on cemeteries listed but was not able to find a grave listed for Big Tom Locklear who is my 3x's maternal great grandfather or his son, William GODFREY Locklear. Godfrey's son, Cyrus is my great grandfather and is buried in the Cyrus Locklear Cemetery on Union Chapel Road beside his wife, Elizabeth Woodell Locklear. I am aware some graves probably were never marked or have deteriorated or been destroyed over the years. Any suggestions would be helpful at your convenience. Thank you. vljacobs

Comments:
Hi, thanks for all the work you have put into with going through the cemeteries. I know it's not been easy. I found some of my ancestor's and more recent ones in the Sacred Grounds Cemeteries. I was referred to your website re: Lost Creek Tribal Association via surname: Evans, my paternal grandmother's maiden name, she married a Walker Walden in the 19th century. There's always been talk of Indian ancestry. I took a gene..DNA test - results being, I'm 56% W african, 38% british Isles & 6%-UNCERTAIN due to small trace amounts of "whatever" So, as time permits I'm sort of reaching backwards.. I'm probably melungeon. My Mother's people being mulatto as well as my Dad. She told us of one of her gr gr grandfathers being German, where he worked & how he lived & yet that didn't show up on my DNA results. She also told us of her heritage, it's so apparent in her face, her hair & her Dad's people - but, not in the genes. Oh well.(Itook the test that is supposed to trace both paternal & maternal DNA?) As popeye the sailor said, " I yam what I yam...& that's all that I Yam! You are doing a great service to many, many people. (I also have relatives with the surname Chaves, chavers, chavis--- which far too many to document from the list of cemeteries.
Thanks again, for caring enough to do what you do! God Bless You.

Thank you for your hard work, I love the site. Have you heard of a Barker Cemetery in the Back Swamp section. Maybe on Rt 3? according to the obit from the Robesonian.

I have had family members tell me that it was plowed over years ago, but I would like to at least identify the area.

Some family members there include Thomas Hayes(1942), Joe Willoughby(1928) and Nancy Cox Willoughby (1931)

Comments:
Dear Sir or Maam:
I am trying to find out about my "Cherokee" family. My mother only gave me one name: Kight,Son as her father. She told me he was illiterate (couldn't read or write) but he could make "moonshine" and they "moved with the crops?" She remembers a "dress that was made for her that will never be worn", a "man that will never marry", and a "house that will never be lived in" because she "left the reservation at an early age". I am having a heck of a time tracking this down..Can you help me please?
thanks for your efforts and time in this...:)
Sincerely,
Sheri Woolley

sourjohnelli was 82 yrs old in 1835, grandmother of my grt grandfather b 1822 in what is now AL, was on 1835 Henderson Roll as 13 yrs old, but next found him in AR , curious as to where sourjohnelli is buried probably on eastern Cherokee lands at one time, haven't been able to find sourjohnelli's parents even, just curious because must of been living in the Revalutionary War even, must of been born about 1853, he came to AR but she no doubt was too old or even dead by then. wonder if they even had any records in the tribe when she was born or died. I would imagine it could of been about 1840 or little after wouldn't you?

You have made a priceless contribution to the history of our people. Connecting to the Bell side of my family has been the highlight of my day. My mother, Aileen Bell Holmes, is the deceased daughter of the late Rev. James E. Bell, the grandson of Wiley, and the great grandson of H.H. Bell. I must make myself leave the computer!

I am certain that we attended school at Magnolia in the sixties; however, I graduated from Pembroke High School in 1965. I teach at UNC Pembroke.

I would enjoy talking with you about your research. My cell is 910-315-8983.

I've been attempting to prove leinage so my family and I can register and be recognized by our tribe. So far, I
havn't been able to find them within the information I've researched. A lot of the information I have is verbal, obtained from other relatives, or stories that have been told for generations, within the family. I won't give up no matter how long it takes. I promised my 91 year old grandmother, just before she died. I will give her back her heritage if it is the last thing I do.

There are 7 in a fence with headstones, buried in a row. They all died in the late 1800's to early 1900's. I think the last name is Carlile or Carlilee...Im not sure.

First I would like to say that I appreciate the work that you have done.

I am trying to trace an ancestor, John Bandiford (Bodiford) of Robeson County. I am not sure whom he was married to, but I know that his son John S Bodiford (born in Robeson County) was my GGGrandfather. I would like to know if maybe you have run accross any information in reference to the Bandifords (Bodifords) or whom he may have married. I know that my GGGrandfather married a few times in Georgia. I would come from the line of John S and Sarah Ann Elkins.

Thanks for your help.

Robin

Area they were from NC

Comments:
My cherokee, Great Great Grandmother was a baby when her family came to OK on the Trail of Tears. They settled in Mayes Co. OK. She married a Cherokee with the last name of Alberty who was considered one of the old settlers in OK, somewhere around Westville. The Albertys were given alotted land in Mayes Co. The cemetary is named after them. During WWII, the government came in and bought up all of the allotted land with the promise that when they were through with it, they would let the family's buy it back. They never did. The cemetary was in the middle of the powder plant. You only had access from a main road at a guard shack. They would lead a caravan to the cemetary on Memorial Day onlyor for a burial. They were still buring in 1965. I think that would have been my grandfathers brother. The cemetary has since been vandalized, including a grave that was dug up. It was told that at one time there were devil worshipers in the area. I have seen the empty grave with the stone tossed inside the grave. Many, many of my relatives are buried there including the Towers, Alberty and others. They still lived there when my mother was a child. It is very sad to go down there. Alot of the stones had been broken and thrown even outside of the cemetary.

Through much digging and stories from my family, I am putting together only a small part of my family's history. Let me see if I have this right...My father is Jerry Baxley, my grandfather was James Baxley, my grandmother is Bonnie Hall-Baxley, her father was Martin Luther Hall, his wife was Jessie Blanks-Hall, his mother was Loula Blanks, her parents were J.W. Blanks and Sarah Bell. I do know that Martin Luther Hall married two or three times and has several children. I do not have much information on Martin Luther Hall. I met MaMa Jessie several times prior to her death when I was a small child so I know that she lived until the 70's. I believe that Loula Blanks married a man by the name of Haggen (SP?) I do not have any other information. I am searching for information on J.W. Blanks, his children, their children and so forth, all the way to Martin Luther Hall and his children.

Any help would be wonderful!!!!!! This can be sooooo frustrating!!!

Thanks

Jane, I have a friend Tony Barnhill from Guilford County that married one of my best frineds. I was at White Lake this past weekend and stumbled upon an old gravesite in the woods off HWY 53, close to Singletary Camp Ground. I wanted to walk around and show my 7 yr old daughter how to read some of the tomb stones. There were 2 that must have been sisters, Suzanne Barnhill and Annie Barnhill, born in 1730's and died in the early 1800's, at the age of 93-95. It is in the Atkinson family cemetary, Willie Atkinson. Please call me if you would like to know more information on this or maybe how to get to the area in the woods to view it. 336-498-3842. Have a blessed day, Christina Garrison

Comments:
Would like to hear from descendants of the HARVEY MCNEILL listed in the 1910 Census. The description found therein matches information my mother gave me about her father long ago. I, also have stories I would like to share with descendants of his children, Minnie, John W., Martha, Gladys or the others two, whose names I could not read clearly. (perhaps, Archie? or(Jackie?) and Myrtle.
This HARVEY MCNEILL is a prime suspect as being my grandfather because of his race (Indian/Mulatto) and his occupation (shinglemaker) I find no record of this family in the 1920 Census. I would like to know when he died and where he is buried.
Thanks,
Carrie McNair

I was impressed with finding the cemetery when my parents are buried. Thanks for creating this site, if you are the person who did.

Also, would it be possible to do the names in alphabetical order? My son has vast computer knowledge (he has a business involving digital pictures, etc.), and he might be able to help with the alphabetizing of the site, at no charge, probably. But that would be up to you, as to whether you'd want to consider such.

Again, I am very impressed with the page, even as it is. I've been to that cemetery many times, for a number of funerals of relatives.

Would appreciate hearing from you.

Area they were from Virginia and the Wakulla Community

Comments:
This is our lineage on my grandmothers Paternal side: (I am the 6th generation)

John Oxendine B:abt. 1696 in Va. Married Sarah ? B: abt 1694 Va.
Charles W. Oxendine (son of John and Sarah) B: 1741 D: Sept 7, 1808 in Robeson County. Married Nancy M. ? B:1765 Ms. Nancy was believed to be Tuscarora.
Luther Oxendine (son of Charles and Nancy) married Susan Lowery (Henry Barry's Aunt)Dec 12, 1896
Luther and Susan donated all the land that the Oxendine Elementary school, Church and Cemetery are located on. These are all located on Oxendine Elementary Road.
Nancy Oxendine (daughter of Luther and Susan:, my grandmother) B:1901 D:1977 married Earl Hunt (my grandfather). Earl was adopted at childbirth. There is some conflict over the birth parents. Mothers last name is said to be either Mitchell or Mitchum (Cherokee).
Welbert Hunt (son of Earl and Nancy), B:1938 married Janice Ogle (deceased 2001).
Danette Seymour (Hunt)B:3/27/1963 in Holton Kansas

This is our lineage on my grandmothers maternal side: (I am the 5th generation)

Calvin Lowery B:1835 D:1892 Married Mariah Sampson B:1841 D:1908 Ms. Sampson Lowery is said to be Tuscarora
(Calvin and Henry Berry were brothers.)
Susan Lowery (daughter of Calvin and Mariah) B:? D:1945 (Ms. Susan married Luther Oxendine (my g-grandfather)

My G-grandparents (Oxendine)gave the land for the school, church and cemetery in 1910. They were the first Native Americans to own land in the Wakulla Community.

My G-G-grandma Mariah (Sampson) Lowery was the first Sampson family in Robeson County.

So through all of this, I find some very interesting family lineage. I do remember my grandma Hunt telling me of "Uncle Henry" being quite the hero of our land. My grandparents named one of their boys after him "Henry (Joe)Hunt." Unfortunately, Henry (Joe) was murdered at a young age during a bar fight. He was mistaken for someone else and suffered with his life. The legendary hero Henry Berry Lowery is my G-G-G Uncle. How cool is that?!!! Ant to tell you the truth, his g-g-g-g nephews are keeping him alive! They are quite the spit fires!

I wish you all the best of luck in tracing your families. We will be visiting this July 2007 for the lumbee homecoming. Hope to have the honor of meeting all of you.

Love to all my family,
Danette (Hunt) Seymour

Jane,
I believe you are the daughter of Prentis Blanks. If correct we lived in the same area as childern and attended Magnolia School together as children. I am the grandson of Chester and Rosie Smith(nephew of Girlene Smith). Correct or not I'd like to say that you and your associates have done a wonderful job of compiling these names and grave sites. I believe I can help you add at least one more family grave yard after I talk with my mother and aunt Girlene. Thank you for so many who have used your site and failed to compliment your work.
Dennis Wyatte.

I was born in Boston, 1936----my father was Julius Snow and his brothers were William C. Snow and Teddy (could have been Theodore) Baker....My father's father, William A. Snow, was born in Weldon, NC...he married my grandmother, Bertha Perham, who was born in Richmond, VA...my father, Julius and his Brother William were both born in Boston... I do not know where my grandparents (Snow-Perham)were married...I never met my grandfather, William A. Snow... I am African American....my research has led me to a Native American connection ... I recall an old victorian looking potrait photograph that hung over by grandmother's bed,(in the 40's early 50's) of a man with light skin(not white)and straight dark hair. My grandmother said when I asked that it was "Mr. Baker". The name my father's oldest brother had. So Baker may also have a Native American connection, too....I'm curious....what can you tell me?

I can't go farther back than my grandfather who was William Richard Dial and he was born Sept. 12, 1902 in Mississippi and he married a Ina Gilchrist who was born in either 1904 or 1909. Shortly after they married they moved to Alabama then to Texas (around the Houston area) until they both died. He died Oct. 27, 1995 and she died Aug. 1990. I have been told that my grandfather's mother's name was Kennedy but I'm not sure if that's true. I'm not sure where his dad was from or his dad. Could you pass this information on to Horace Dial and ask him if he would e-mail me back? It looks like he is very knowledgeable about the Dial Family since he helped so much with this web-site. Any and all help would be very much appreciated. Thank you so much, Rhonda

Our family moved from Robeson County to Dillon, SC and then to Cumberland County, NC in 1940's & 1950's to find work. Since then, much of our contact with our extended families and our heritage has been lost. I am trying to rekindle lost relations and honor our heritage. Anyone with info on the descendants of Isaih, Bennett, James Gustus or James Edward Emanuel or of Nancy Jane Locklear, daughter of Edward and Mary Locklear, please email me. Thank you and may God bless.

Earliest Known Ancestor Raymond Hunt
Area they were from Robeson County (Pembroke?) North Carolina
Where you live Junction City, Kansas
Comments:
I was born in Lumberton, North Carolina in 1975 to Raymond Glenn and Laura Dale Hunt. My father's parents were Elbert Glidwell Cain (1914-1991) and Irene Hunt (1923-1987). My mother's parents were James Wilbert Hunt (1920-1968) and Nancy Jane Barton (1926-still living in Bladenboro). On my father's side, I have no information at all on Elbert Glidwell Cain, just that he lived in Robeson County and that he had a wife and two other children. I can trace my grandmother, Irene, back to her father Raymond Hunt and his father John, and John's father, Hector. I also can trace almost all of my Grandma Irene's brothers and sisters from this site. I would love to be able to find some information out on my Grandma Irene's mother, Cellia though. She was born sometime in March 1893 and died in 1947 and originated from Clio, South Carolina. But that is all I know about her. It would be great to get names of her parents and brothers and sisters and also family member names from Raymond also.

On my mother's side, I can trace my Grandma Nancy back to her father and mother (Odom Barton & Alice Oxendine) and her paternal grandparents (Nathaniel Barton & Rose Ann Strickland) and her maternal great grandmother (Nancy Oxendine). I have no idea on the dates of birth of her grandparents. I have a list of my Grandma Nancy's brothers and sisters but no dates of birth, except Luk Onley who found on this site was buried next to Grandma Nancy's parents. I have almost nothing on my mother's father, James Wilbert Hunt. Only that his mother was Amy Hunt born in October 1900 and that she had another same named Doug, who still may be living in Pembroke or somewhere in that area. My mother said that Amy Hunt lived with a man named Maston McCormick who was James Wilbert's father but they were not allowed to marry because he was a Scottish immigrant (a white man) and she was an Indian. I also know that Amy Hunt was adopted but I do not know the names of her adoptive parents or her biological parents.

This information is particularly interesting to me because I did not grow up in Lumberton. My father, Raymond Glenn Hunt was in the military my entire life. I lived in Lumberton until I was 6 years old and then we moved around the world for the next 12 years. Now I live in Junction City, Kansas with my husband and children and I am interested in who my family was. From what I can tell they have a very interesting history and because of that it is a little difficult to track them all down. I am planning a visit back to Lumberton sometime soon, I have not been there since 1996.

But thanks to your site, I will be able to go to some of the cemeteries and find some of the information I could not on the internet.

Thank You,
Myra (Hunt) Peoples

Earliest Known Ancestor Mark Lowry
Area they were from Floyd Co. Ga to Starrville, Smith , TX
Where you live Naocgdoches TX
Comments:
Mark Lowry was the son of Sarah Ann Lowry. He was born in Jackson GA circa 1826, died in Big Sandy, Upshur,TX at the home of his daughter Amanda Lowry King. His burial was in the Starrville, Smith, TX Cemetery, near a relative David Lowry. My cousin has done the research on this tie to the Drummond family( he married (2) Amanda Drummond in Pike Co., GA circa 1864-65. His (1) wife was Elizabeth Murdock. They married in Jackson Co. GA and Amanda Lowry was of this marriage. We have attempted to determine Marks's father but have been unsuccessful at establishing this parent. My hope is to find a tie to the Lowry(Lawrie, Lowery families of N.C. I have attempted to make some discoveries on your site, but nothing specific has developed
to this point. Should your recognize Sarah Ann and son Mark Lowry I would appreciate notice of such recognition.
Your site has been very thorough at recording the burial locations of this family. In reviewing these records I find several of the names are applicable to many for my family surnames. Specific to my lines are these surnames( Cain, Berry, Lowry, Freeman ) from the Georgia counties of Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Dekalb, Cobb, Cherokee, Bartow, Floyd and Gordon. Thanks for such a fine site.

My regards,

C. Brightwell

get into it. I was back this past month and did get in but didn't have much time as it was getting dark, and I had to get on the road. Hunts are buried there I found my gggrandmothers stone Roxanna Hunt died Mar.11,1892 Aged 58yrs

Wes Tauchery has helped me in the past but was not able to get very far. Can you suggest someone or give me some advice as to where to start? Thank you.

My mother Avonie Hunt Smith, uncle Stacy Hunt and grandmother Delphia Hammonds Hunt are not showing up on your Robeson Memorial listing and they died well before 2000. I noticed the Cyrus Mercer/Sammuel Hammonds information in the Hammonds (Cyrus Mercer) cemetary was accurate.
