I have a little bit of a lot of nationalities in me, so with what he told me over the years, I went to Ancestry, Rootsweb, and Family Search and found everything you guys had put in. Maybe a little more, but not much. Idid this on all sides of my family and have quite a collection. Daddy was right: I am Heinz 57.

What is your interest in Mcmains research? to trace back to the old country
Comments:
My paternal grandmother was a descendant of Robert and Sarah McMains through their daughter, Margaret ("Margery"). She was born about 1786 in Pennsylvania, and she married Samuel Meek, born around 1785. Their daughter, Isabella Meek, married John Mitchell and their daughter, Amasetta Emaline was my great-grandmother. Isabella was named after her mother-in-law, Isabella McMains, also her aunt; she was a sister to her mother Margery. It is difficult to get everyone straight with these ancestors of mine, as the Mitchell's, Meek's, and McMains intermarried over several generations. Other surnames associated with these families were Alexander and Glass. It would be fun to know if they all originated from the same place in either Ireland or Scotland back in the very early 1700's.

My father was Cecil Warren McMains, Jr. from Cecil Warren McMains, Sr. who resided in San Diego, CA.
I knew my grandmother as "Nannie".
There were 12 surviving, but she had I think 16 total. One from a previous marriage. - Aunt Jean Kent would know more on that. She lives in Washington State now.

My grandfather Cecil McMains was born in IOWA. I search in Utah, and found his ship record when his father came to this country.

My dad who was like 18-20 at the time had a SON out of wedlock when his was in his early 20's. As I understand it, he went to the bank and an older woman seduced him (yeah, right). Produce a cute baby boy. This was somewhere in San Diego, CA. She showed him to my grandparents but, because not being married etc... I guess she just took off with him. I believe she was 32 years of age at the time of giving birth. I don't know her name or anything. It has been kept in the closet. But, my father died in 1984, so I believe it's been long enough. And I would like to meet this baby. Who happens to be my half brother. From what I understand he had a foot issue. I have a picture of him as a child. It was sent to my grandmother when he was like 2 or 3 years of age.
I wish I knew his name.

John McMAINS, b. 18Jan1815
-------------------------------
biography from Portrait & Biographical Album of Mahaska Co., Iowa, 1887

JOHN McMAINS, deceased, was born in Owen County, Ky.. Jan. 18, 1815. In 1825 he removed to Indiana, then a wild and unsettled country, remaining in that State until 1836, when he came to the Territory of Iowa, then a vast expanse of prairie, occupied almost solely by Indians, buffalo, and the wild animals of the prairie, locating in what is now known as Cedar County, where he remained for eight years, the Indians being his only companions. He then returned to Indiana, and remained three years. Returning again In 1847 to the State of Iowa, he came to Mahaska County, settling in Union Township, where by pre-emption and entry he secured a large tract of land, owning at one time nearly 700 acres of land in that township, which he divided with his children, so that at his death but 240 acres remained. In early life Mr. McMains was an old-line Whig, but he affiliated with the Republican party upon its organization, and was its warm supporter and defender until his decease. He held many local offices of trust and responsibility, such as township Trustee, School Director, etc., performing all the duties imposed with intelligence and fidelity. In 1837 Mr. McMains was united in marriage to Miss Jane Goddard, a native of Kentucky. By this union there were eight children, five of whom are living, viz.: Elizabeth, wife of John H. Fry, deceased; Ann, wife of J. B. Bolton, of the firm of Bolton & McCoy, attorneys at Oskaloosa; Mary E., wife of E. P. Bolton, a farmer in Mahaska County; Isaiah, of New Sharon, and William, at Axtell, Kan. Mrs. Jane McMains died in 1858. She was an acceptable and leading member of the Christian Church. Mr. McMains was again married, Jan. 1, 1861, to Mrs. Rachel Chidester, formerly Rachel Hawley, who was born in Chatauqua County, N. Y., Aug. 27, 1829. Her father, Erie Hawley, was born July 29, 1797. He married Miss Hannah J. Engle, Dec. 22, 1825, who was born Aug. 29, 1808. They were the parents of eight children, four living: Elisha, of Mahaska County, Iowa; Rachel, widow of John MoMains; John, of Mahaska County, Iowa, and Cordelia, wife of James W. Johnson, of Oskaloosa. Two of the children died in infancy. Mr. Hawley left New York about the year 1832, locating in Logan County, Ohio, then an unsettled country; here he remained until the year 1855, when he came to Mahaska County. where he remained until his death in 1880, at the age of over eighty-two years. His wife died the same year at the age of seventy-two. Mr. and Mrs. Hawley were members of the Christian Church for many years, holding a prominent position in its councils and enjoying the confidence and esteem of their neighbors and friends. He was an honest, upright man in all his dealings with his fellow-men. His home was one of hospitality and good cheer, and he died beloved by all who knew him. John and Rachel McMains were the parents of three childrenÄOliver, Ida and Erastus, all of whom reside in this county. Mrs. McMains was previously married to Worthington Chidester, by whom she bad one son, Holdridge, now a resident of Barber County, Kan. Mr. Chidester was an acceptable member of the Christian Church, and died Oct. 21, 1858. John McMains was one of the early pioneers of this county, and aided very materially in the development of its resources. The lands selected by him were among the best in that section of the county, and all the improvements were of a superior quality. He was a prominent member of the Christian Church, a sincere and earnest worker, and gave of his money in support of the same. He was a man of his word, and dealt fairly and honorably with all men. Mrs. McMains resides in Oskaloosa, and is a member of the same church.

I too, am a direct descendant of SC Mcmains. My great-grandmother was Cora McMains, a daughter. Cora married William E. Vernon, Jr. (I have been unable to connect by marriage except by the two children they had...and as we all know, marriage doesn't have to be part of the deal)....anyway, I was wondering if you inherited any photos you could share. I have one photo of William and it isn't a good one. I would really like to see a better picture of him if possible. Except for that one photo, I have no pictures of the Vernon's except my Grandmother Dorothea and that one distant shot of William in his store in Iowa. Would you have any photos of Cora and William?

My maiden name was Mains. I have recently had 2 of my male relatives D.N.A. tested (one in England and one in N.Z.), and it appears that our name was originally McMains of Irish/Scottish decent. My Mains ancestors came to N.Z. in 1859 from Dunoon in Scotland. I have traced them back to 1742 in that area and felt that the name may have changed from McMains to Mains about that time.

My great Grandfather James Donald McMenzies/McMenzie b. 1854 Scotland, in (mis-?)recorded as McManes for his 1886 marriage. There is rumour of family roots in Ireland, and there were a number of McMenzies in South West Scotland, the area closest to North East Ireland, in 1700s/1800s.

Any examples of McMains recorded as McManes?

Any Scots reading this, say McMenzies with a soft 'z' not 'zees' or hard 'gh' (the archaic 'yogh' character). With a stretch of the imagination, it could be McManes.

I have a document that shows the children of Andrew J. McMains (son of James Matthew & Charity Ann Dailey). It's a court petition from Andrew's widow to appoint a guardian to sell the real estate left in his will.

Here's how the document lists them:

Mary Isabella McMains born Sept 16, 1852
Amanda Elizabeth McMains born Nov 14, 1854
Charity L. McMains born March 29, 1857
Jordan McMains born April 1, 1859
Homer McMains born Sept 27, 1863

I'm not sure if Homer is correct. It could be Gomer. Whoever wrote this document and awful handwriting.

The final petition is approved and dated Feb 27, 1866

Hope this is useful?

ok. I should have read on. It's Oostanaula River. Oh my, this other document says the union soldiers faced General Walker's "rebel" division with a battery and earth works, and the bank of the river was lined with sharpshooters. Well, it must have been terrible. But I'm still not sure if Lay's Ferry is close by. If so, that would mean Francis and Sandford were near each other when one was wounded and the other was killed?

I have a document [thanks to Tom House :)] that I can't quite make out. It's the Death form filled out by the commander for Francis McMains when he was killed in action during the Civil War on May 14, 1864. I can see he was killed in Georgia. But it looks like it says "Ortanaula River." Is there such a place? I know Sandford Clark McMains was wounded on the same day at Lay's Ferry "near Rasaca, Georgia." Are these the same places?

If anyone can clarify this for me I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Interesting link on Ancestry.com came to my attention today. Not sure if everyone else has already found out about this, but it's some info about James B. Bolton, the man Annie McMains (daughter of John McMains & Jane Goddard) married on Mar 16, 1866 in Oskaloosa, Iowa (also lists 1 son, Leslie)

http://images.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=view&r=an&cat=BIOGMAHASKACTY-IA-1887&path=2.3&id=0419&jb=0&nt=8&td=vert

It's always great to get a new piece of info, but I really like to find out some facts about my ancestorys lives along with any local background info to give me a picture of what it might have been like then.

Comments:
I found a news article in the June 21, 1960 Guthrie County, Iowa newspaper, "The Guthrian" referencing the following:

"Iowa Organist
Bill McMains, 33, of Oskaloosa, will play the organ at the Republican National Convention in Chicago next Month. He played for both political conventions in 1952 and 1956. McMains explained the reason he wasn't playing for the Democrats at their Los Angeles convention in that they have another type organ installed and one of his company's organs probably will not be put in. McMains is hired by the Conn Organ Corp., to play at political conventions."

Does anyone know if or how he might fit into the family tree?

Apparently, he started his organ playing career at the age of 12 playing at a roller rink. He was hired while in college (Central College) at the age of 25.

I am seaching for Smith McMains who disappeared into California in the 1860's. He probably came to Hangtown [present day Placerville] where there were other McMains'. He was reputedly on the run from the Army who accused him of selling horses to the Confederates. He probably changed his name, or didn't stay long in Calif. It seems certain he did not return home to his wife & children in Ft Scott, KS. I notice his listed on this site as Samuel Smith, 1st time I have ever encountered that first name. In all my records he is only Smith, probabl for his Mother's maiden name. Any help? Kathleen

Your site has a great set-up, although each time I have been in to browse it, most of the 'generation' sites have been under construction. That's ok, I know it takes a lot of time to keep it updated.
I am Odie's sister, who signed your guest-book earlier. There were at least 3 marriages between the children of Robert and Sarah McMains to children of Robert Mitchell and Elizabeth Glass: Jenny McMains m. Robert Mitchell; Isabel McMains m. Samuel Mitchell; Mary "Polly" McMains m. William Henry Mitchell, which is my connection. William and Mary's daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell m. Lewis Walden. They are my gg grandparents. I have quite a lot of information on the Mitchell's, but not a lot on the McMains, but am willing to share both Mitchell and McMain info. I have some photo's of Sarah and a couple of her brothers. I will try to get them posted or sent to you soon. I have a photo of the headstone for William and Mary Mitchell in Oakdale Cemetery, Montgomery Co., IN. The cemetery is very near to the property they owned there. Many of their children went to Appanoose Co. Iowa, which borders Mahaska Co. Iowa, where it seems many of the McMains went.
This is a great site, and a great way to share information. Thanks for a good job.

George Washington McMains is buried in the Tinsley Cemetery in Mahaska County, Iowa. I believe your site has a choice of two but I have looked at the stone for GW and his wife in the Tinsley Cemetery. The stone is on the ground flat but the dates match so there is little doubt. I have a lot of personal knowledge of my great grandmother's family and will contribute as requested. I leave near Mormon Point Cemetery, Mahaska County, Iowa where several of the early McMains family stones are located.

Hi,

I found your website when I was in ancestry.com searching for a Samuel. I found you Samuel son of my GGGrandparents, Lewis and Sarah (Mitchell)Walden. I am descended through thier son William Henry Walden. I need to look up some of the papers that I have on that line and I do know I have some info to contribute to this site. I have really enjoyed your website, it was alot of fun browsing around in here. It's easy to manuever in and you have alot of information on nearly all the lines. I'm really glad that I found it. My sister, Nita and I started working on our Walden genealogy 4 or 5 years ago, and have gotten back to the mid 1700's so far. We are now running into the problem of in that time frame, Virginia's counties were still forming and reforming, so although our line might not have moved, the county boundaries had so they have some records in this county and other's in that one. Then to top it off, there were several Walden lines that lived in the same areas and named their children the same names, but according to the DNA Genealogy tests, many were NOT related!!! At least not directly, so we have had a few set backs there, where we had thought for sure that this group and that group were related due to same vicinity and time as well as naming patterns! It keeps things interesting as well as a good measure of frustrating too. Well nice to meet you and glad to have found your website. I sent your website addy to my sister Nita as well, I know she will enjoy it as much as I have. Thanks, Odie (Walden)Boyd

Interesting, some of the errors obits have in them? I was just reading the obit for Lucy Ann Perdue, wife of Sandford Clark McMains. I found myself wondering if it was the same relative I've been investigating? Lucy and Sandford were divorced, but the obit made it sound like they lived in Oskaloosa until he died "in 1911?" He married Elizabeth Stommel in 1902 and didn't pass away until 1919...right? Also, my research shows that Cora was remarried to Park Fullerton, not Mark Fullerton. She also had other sons that were still alive besides Charles. Roy, Ernest, and Cash were still living when Cora (their sister) died in 1945 in Eau Claire Wisconsin. Had Lucy disowned them?

And what's an Octogenarian? Someone who only eats octopus? Hehe, just kidding. But I've never heard that word, what does it mean?

Daniel McMains was married to Janet (surname unknown). He died in 1770 and I have a copy of his will. He had at least three daughters -- Sarah, Dinah and Elizabeth. I'm from Dinah, who married Lieut. James Campbell. I know very little about this family except that Daniel McMains was part of the Presbyterian 18th-century Scots-Irish emigration to New England from County Tyrone with the Campbells and others. Many of these families first settled in Rutland, MA, and then dispersed to CT and elsewhere. Do you know anything about this family, or where in Scotland the family came from? I believe they were Lowland Scots. Thanks! Emily Palmer

I just thought I'd mention that I have posted a couple new pictures to my family website. I have a few other photos I'm trying to post, but I'm running out of space on my free website, so I'm not sure I'll be able to. Like a photo of Katherine McMains, daughter of Roy McMains & Loretta Graff, and also their son Paul McMains. Hopefully, I'll be able to fit them in?

For any who would like to see the pictures, they are located at http://www.geocities.com/princess_faythnu/

If I have too many more problems with this website, I may delete it and try creating another. So if anyone has interest in these McMains pictures, now's the time.

I came across an obituary in some of my family records for Mrs. James D. McHenry
It says:
Mrs. Anna McMains McHenry died Saturday afternoon at 4:05 following a stroke, at her home in Thayer.
Mrs McHenry was born in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio, March 25, 1871, being 86 years, 12 days of age at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Jacob and Frances Martin and came to Kansas with the family in 1878. She grew to womanhood in the Thayer community, was married to James Daniel McHenry March 25, 1897, at San Jose, California. They lived at Santa Maria, Calif. for four years, returning to Kansas and the Harrison neighborhood where they lived for many years, later retiring and moving to Thayer. Mrs. McHenry united with the Lutheran Church when a small child.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Milo Hazen of Thayer, a grand daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Ann Forbregd, and two great grand daughters, Kristin Lee and Lisa Kathleen Forbregd, of Danville, Ind. Mrs Mc Henry was preceded in death by her husband in March 1951, her parents, a sister, and five brothers.

Comments:
My Maternal grandmother, Grace Clementine (LADY) JONES ADKINS ODOM ADKINS, cousin is Millie "Myrtle" (JONES) MCMAINS. Myrtle, I have recently discovered through John and subsequent census searches, was married to Francis Archibald MCMAINS. Myrtle's mother is Tabitha Bird CASTER and her father is Jarrold Thomas JONES, brother to Telatha Ann JONES, who married Job Michael CASTER (brother to Tabitha Bird CASTER). Job and Telatha had Pearl Christine CASTER who married Albert Hanson LADY, who had my maternal grandmother, Grace Clementine LADY. I have a few more photos I would like to share - it's just a matter of getting them to John. The photo I already submitted to John is of "Grandma, Tabitha and Millie / Millie MORROW / Millie, Tabitha and Ma - taken at Ma's place." It's nice to find some of the MCMAINS cousins!! Looking forward to more!

What is your interest in Mcmains research? My wife is a McMains
Comments:
My wife's paternal grandfather was the late Marvin Dale McMains, from Iowa. He moved to California during or after WWII, working at Lockheed in Burbank. I'm not sure of all the details, but I should be able to ask around my wife's uncles and aunts.

(One of your guestbook posters may be one of my wife's nieces, which is how I found the page when doing a name search!)

Saw your information at the GenCircles website. Our families tie together at Mary McMains when she married William W. Mitchell in March 1811. I would like to show my children their family heritage through pictures and genealogy.

Thank you
