Where did they live (twp, town)? North Braddock/Munhall
Earliest known Valley ancestor 1910 ?
Comments:
My family went to the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum near Washington, PA where we were blessed to meet "MR CONDUCTOR" Bryant Schmude. He is quite a storehouse on Mon Valley lore and history. My son, Michael was able to have his picture with MR CONDUCTOR who dug out a rare sign to make one of the trolley cars a #67 Braddock/Swissvale--which my late father ran. MR CONDUCTOR made him a black-n-white picture and sent it to us with many materials for my son. He wrote many articles for many newspapers--including The Valley Mirror.
If you want to know about the old days in the mon Valley, find Bryant Schmude at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum.

On the 1900 census in Mon City Anna is listed as a widow, so I have no info on that side at all. Any help at all with any of these names would help.

Where did they live (twp, town)? Finleyville, Pittsburgh
Earliest known Valley ancestor same as above
Comments:
Frances Shuder passed away December 1972 and her husband Frank Shuder passed away August 1973. They had 3 daughters and 1 son. The three daughters have all passed away and the son-Frank Shuder lives in Lancaster, Pa which is where I live. I am trying to find out if where their home is and if it is. I haven't been there since I was 11 which was in 1973. Their address at that time was an RD# which I'm sure since then has changed. I will be in the area in March and am just trying to locate it before I get there.
I'm kind of at a dead end.

I grew up under the Dooker's Hollow Bridge in North Braddock with a special fondness for the regions history...I share some of this as "MR CONDUCTOR" at the PA TROLLEY MUSEUM RAILWAY near Washington, PA...While my travels have taken me near and very-very far, my youth was shaped in the shadows of the E.T. Steel Mill and the Pennsylvania RR mainline. The SCHMUDE FAMILY came to Pittsburgh's Woods Run Valley in the 1890s and branches ended up in the South Hills and Munhall areas. I have traced the SCHMUDE lines back to the 1500s.

I am interested in railways and transit systems and you can write to me at PA TROLLEY MUSEUM RAILWAY, 1 Museum Road, Washington, PA 15301 "attn--MR CONDUCTOR/Bryant Schmude" I have many tales of the Mon Valley trolleys and trains that I hope to share with you.

Comments:
"During the autumn of 1812, Elisha Hunt visited his friend [Joseph White] in Philadelphia, and while there they examined a little stern-wheel steamboat ["Rebecca"] built under a patent owned by Daniel French, of Connecticut, and then running as a ferry-boat between Cooper's Point, in New Jersey, and Philadelphia.
French informed them that he could construct steamboats that would run five miles an hour against the current of the Mississippi River.
A stock company was formed to construct steamboats and carry passengers and freight by steamboats between Pittsburgh and New Orleans. The stock of this company was divided into six shares, of which Joseph White owned two, or one-third of the entire stock.
The Steamboat Company purchased the right to use French's patent west of the Allegheny Mountains, engaged his services, erected shops at Brownsville, manufactured tools for working iron, cut logs into plank with whip-saws, and with the ferry-boat above mentioned as their model, constructed the steamboat "Enterprise," costing about fifteen thousand dollars, and in the latter part of the summer of 1813 [21 Dec. 1814] she left Pittsburgh for New Orleans, under the command of Capt. Henry Shreve, a son of Israel Shreve, of Burlington County, N.J., a colonel in the Revolutionary army."

Earliest known Valley ancestor Joshua Hunt
Comments:
In 1790 Joshua and Esther (Roberts) Hunt loaded two wagons with their belongings and, along with their five children, seven horses and a cow, departed Moorestown, NJ for their new home in southwestern Pennsylvania. After a difficult three week journey, the small caravan finally passed over the last crest of the Allegheny mountain range and descended into the valley of the Monongahela River.

In the spring of 1791 the family settled into their house, built of logs, on 195 acres bordering the Big Redstone creek which spills into the Monongahela about 40 statute miles south of Pittsburgh. They called their new home Hunt Pleasant, and here is where a daughter, Rachel, was born. In this wilderness, near the present day town of Brownsville, also resided the families of Robert Hunt III, Joshua's half-brother, and Elizabeth (Roberts) Cattell, Esther's sister.

Joshua died February 26, 1792 leaving a wife and six children: Elisha, Enoch, Nathan, Caleb, Stacy and Rachel. Esther Hunt not only reared her children but she was actively involved in various affairs of Quaker meeting. For example, she made several journeys to Baltimore to attend Yearly Meeting, a roundtrip of more than 600 miles, which she performed on horseback.

I have grown up hearing oral family history of my grandfather, John H. Stoop, and his wife, Catherine, going to California from the Pittsburgh area around the turn of the last century. It never dawned anyone that it coulc have been California, PA. It was always assumed to be the state. Are there any directories from this time? I have been unsuccessful in locating them in California state. My grandfather was a blacksmith and worked most of his time in the Iran and Steel mills in Pittsburgh. Were there any mills in California, PA.

Earliest known Valley ancestor not sure which Jackman's ,Robert or Wm.
Comments:
Hi,
My Jackman's, we are pretty sure they came to Fayette Co. and on to Washington Co. As you are aware there are probably two to three different Jackman families here in 1760's on. My line is from a Richard Jackman Sr. who went to Jefferson Co. at least by 1798 and have deed for May 12, 1801. Richard Sr. had two daughters, Jane Jackman Patterson and Suannah Jackman Armstrong. Suannah Jackman Armstrong was my gggg grandmother. I also have a deed for a Wm. Jackman, from Washington Co. dated 1804, Jefferson Co. Of course we are not sure which Wm Jackman this is? No wife mentioned. And If it was mention I sure it was Margaret.
Never saw this site when researching Jackman's. Would like to find. Richard's father. William, Robert or Who?

Your Mon Valley surnames Irwin, Beazell, Fulton, Guthrie
Where did they live (twp, town)? Sunny Side, Twilight, Elizabeth Twp. area, Monessen, Monongahela, Forward Twp., Donora and Rostraver Twp. to name a few.
Earliest known Valley ancestor John Irwin
Comments:
John Irwin is the son of James Irwin/Irvine. James came to America in early to mid 1700s with sons: James, Archibald, John and Samuel. There is a story that John and a brother were wagon masters in Revolutionary War; they melted pewter spoons in to the tips of their whips. They were set upon by some English soldiers, and literally whipped them off their horses. The boys were granted congratulations and allowed to keep their whips. The boys also served in the Rangers of the Frontier. John is said to have died about 1795 and is buried in Barren Run Cemetery. He married about 1783 to Margaret Guthrie Fulton, daughter of Abraham Fulton and Margaret Guthrie. They had 5 children who marry and have children. The details after this are difficult to follow. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your Mon Valley surnames Hindman, Lecky, Pollock, Patten, Sutten
Where did they live (twp, town)? Union Township, Monongahela City, West Newton
Earliest known Valley ancestor John Hindman
Comments:
Searching for information about John Hindman who came to Union Township in the years 1796-1798. He purchased 72 acres from Thomas Cannon, on a hill above Lime Town or Coal Bluff or Shire Oaks? Later he bought land from Isaac Daily, which was Fallen Timber Bottoms, also land from Philip Daily called Dauphin.

John was born near Port Deposit, Maryland in 1769 to Samuel Hindman, mother unknown. Samuel came to this country from Wales with his family. They landed in the South somewhere and ended up in Maryland. Samuel was reported to have been married twice with three children, one of which is the John Hindman that married Sarah Patten 26, April 1792 at Faggs Manor Presbyterian Church, Londonderry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

About 1796 Sarah and John Hindman along with Sarah's brother William Patten and his wife drove a six-horse wagon with all of their possessions to Finley Township where they made a short stop before purchasing land in Union Township.

John and Sarah were members of the Presbyterian Church
at Mingo. John died in 1851 and his wife Sarah died in 1852.

John and Sarah had nine children. I have quite of list of their spouses and children. Their son William reportedly stayed on his father's farm with his wife Sarah Campbell. William and Sarah had a number of children one of which is quite well known, Matilda Hindman.

My great, great grandfather was Robert Hindman also a son of John and Sarah Hindman. He married Hannah Pollock.

Here is my problem. I have read an obituary of Matilda Hindman saying she was from near Monongahela, Washington County, PA; and I have letters written during the civil war to Hannah Hindman by her son William Smith Hindman, the envelopes are addressed to Monongahela City, Washington County, PA., yet they are reported by other sources to be from Prosperity, Washington County, PA. Also, another son of Robert Hindman and Hannah Pollock Hindman, Samuel Hindman my great grandfather has a biography stating that his Post Office is Sunnyside, Allegheny County, PA; but the letters he wrote to his wife, Mary Worley Lecky Hindman are addressed to Monongahela City, Washington County, PA. These letters all span quite a few years. I have not detected that they removed themselves to other addresses. I believe the place names may have changed.

These people obviously belong to the Monongahela area but where? I would like to contribute to the site but do not know where? I have the bible pages of Robert Hindman and Hannah Pollock. Hannah Hindman was the beneficiary of a pension from her son William Smith Hindman.

M. L. Hindman

Your Mon Valley surnames VanKirk, Hutchinson, Williams
Where did they live (twp, town)? Elizabeth Twp, Rostraver
Earliest known Valley ancestor Joseph VanKirk, b. 1750 SW PA l768 or 1769
Comments:
Am interested in clarifying history of the area in which
the accomplishments and family of Joseph VanKirk, born l750,
are attributed to his younger nephew, Joseph VanKirk, born
l774. The elder Joseph had received training in surveying
and law before traveling to SW PA. He taught in a small
school located between what is now Elizabeth and West Newton. He surveyed the bouderies of Westmoreland County,
assisted his neighbors with legal documents and was the
first permanent settler in the neighborhood of West Newton.
He and David Davis, whom he had met on his journey across
the mountains, layed out the town of West Newton, though
Joseph resided in Elizabeth after having completed his term
as post master in l813. As far as I can determine, all the
property deeds of Joseph VanKirk in Allegheny County belonged to the elder Joseph. If anyone has knowledge of
Joseph VanKirk, born l774, it would be appreciated. (Am
aware of his burial at Round Hill Cemetary.} Thank you for
any assistance.

Where did they live (twp, town)? Brownsville Area
Earliest known Valley ancestor Alexander Wilson, Wife Mariah ?, John Troth, Wife Hannah Baker
Comments:
My great-grandfather was Charles Wilson who married Isabella Troth. His parents were Alexander Wilson and Mariah ? Wilson. Until recently we only knew of two of Charles' siblings, Oliver and Alexander. We have information now that there were several more older brothers and sisters. Was there a previous wife for the elder Alexander?

We are not sure who Isabella's parents were but her apparent grandparents and the people who raised her were John Troth and his wife Hannah Baker Troth.

My cousin and I have pretty much decided that our family descended from aliens and went into the witness protection program. We can only account for the Wilsons for a period of around 1850 - 1890. I will share information with anyone who can shed some light on these elusive people.

Trying to prove our connection into the Washington Co., and/or Fayette Co. DAVISON lines...we have family folklore clues that led us to this area, but only census data and guessing...so we'd like to prove our connection:

married early 1825
Elizabeth Moss (maybe Harrison) (1807 PA-1865 IN)

Children in order of birth:

> Hannah Amanda anne b. Jan. 1826 in PA
(thus marriage date guess)
> Mary Ann b. 1827 in PA
> John b. 1829 in PA
> Martha Jane b. 1831 in PA

> David Allen b. 1834 in PA

We've got some strong clues the family is in the SW corner of PA...holler my way if you want to compare data...

Comments:
john giles came from Engand to open mines. Joseph farrington worked for him in Gratztown when he came from England-later married his daughter Elizabeth Giles. The last address I have for John Giles is 1912 in witset. He died shortly after that and his wife went to live in Donora with her daughter Emily Newmeyer who worked for a Dr. Day who practiced in donora. Do you have any info on this family

Earliest known Valley ancestor George Yakim, Sr Julia Tirpak
Comments:
My grandparents came from the "old country" in the early 1900's. I have just begun researching the genealogy and stumbled upon this page. I think it is great, and has brought back some memories of Monessen. I hope that someone may have some information on my grandparents and their background. I am particularly interested in the village that they came from. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Earliest known Valley ancestor are there any? I'm reaching...
Comments:
Am interested in anyone with surname SAINT anywhere in the Valley. Benjamin F. SAINT,a shoemaker in Uniontown in 1850 mar. Mary Jane WILKISON abt 1849, moved to Shinnston, Harrison Co. VA / WV before 1856. By 1900 his son Hugh Fleming SAINT, a miner, was living near Charleroi, Cannonsburg.

Folks found near Ben SAINT in Uniontown in 1850 are George CAMERON, shoemaker and Joseph McCLELLAND, tanner.

Names associated with SAINT in Shinnston are KNOX, FLEMING, SHINN, WILKISON. Found all of them among the preachers and elders of the Redstone Circuit (Brownsville Methodist - Episcopal Church)1800-1832.
