As a Maine-iac living in Texas, I'm pleased to see pictures of what I always felt was my "home" town. Though I was not born there, my mother and all of her family go way back in Canaan, Hartland and Newport...(Gleasons, Nelsons, Ledins, Hubbards, Turners). We have a camp on the south shore of Sibley along with several of our relatives on the old Nelson (my great grandfather) Farm property. When I was a kid, back in the 50's-70's Canaan was a terrific classic small town. The heart of the town was Albert Holt's general store. Things have changed radically, and not all for the better, but it still means the world to me. Thanks to Amy for getting this site up and running. As I said, If you'll let me know what kind of photos you want, I'll get around to seeing if I have anything that you could use.

I would like to see more photos of the town, both historical and modern. The views from the Town Office area don't show much of the individual buildings because they are all "hidden" one behind the other in this perspective. Also, I would like to see pictures of the old Meetinghouse.

so I just came across this site, pretty suprised. I grew up riding my bike around the town of Canaan, eating twinkies at Canaan Superette. Then there was this time we threw a huge party up at the fire tower- and all the cops within a forty mile radius- and the fire department themselves came out too. Those were the best days of my life.
