I am the great-great-granddaughter of John D. Shorrock, father of Mary Ellen Shorrock who married John Norwood in Paterson, New Jersey. John Norwood inherited John D. Shorrock's large paint store in Paterson through his wife's inheritance.

I have copies of John Norwood's autobiography but for the life of me can't locate the website where I got it from. Can you send me the link please? Thank you so much.

I am trying to track info on my great great grandfather. His name was James M. Stephens and he was married to Camilla Elizabeth Norwood, b; 30 Mar 1830, Anne Arundel Co., MD. She married James M. Stephens in 1851 in Maryland. Her father's name was Thomas Norwood and he was married to Henrietta Linthicum. I have hit a huge brick wall on the Stephens/Norwood families. Hope to break them down soon.

I am a graduate student of history at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.
I am writing a cartographic history of Bermuda, and I am currently researching Richard Norwood's 1622 map, which was engraved by Abraham Goos, and then published in John Speed's atlas, "A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World."
I am trying to determine if Norwood's original map was produced in color. Apparently, his original map was lost, but the engraving still exists in the British Museum.

I am updating my post made a couple of years ago. I now have traced John D. Shorrock's lineage back to England. His daughter Mary Ellen married John Norwood who worked in John D.'s paint store in Paterson, New Jersey. Norwood later took over the paint store when his wife inherited upon her mother's death. I am hoping that by posting a message on message boards, I will turn up pictures of John D. Shorrock and Mary Hatcroft Shorrock and Mary Ellen and John Norwood. It is possible that there are pictures out there considering how popular photography was after 1860.
If you have such pictures I would be happy to trade lineage information on Mary Ellen Shorrock for the pictures. Thank you.

Reference your notation: (There's an Arthur Norwood of the correct age that m. Nellie Evelyn Van Vleck listed in the 1920 census in the same area as the rest of this family, but I haven't been able to locate source documentation proving this to be or not to be the correct person.)

I believe the Arthur Norwood refrenced in the the Van Vleck records to be the husband of a member of the Van Vleck family (Mary, I think). That Arthur was an immigrant from England who was first a school teacher, then a merchant (founded what became Rutland Dept Stores in FL) and went on to become Mayor of St Petersburg, FL, at the time of Tony Jannus' history-making first scheduled commercial airline flight (see: http://www.stpetemuseumofhistory.org/stpeteoverview.htm). An Elementary School today bears his name. (See:http://www.norwood.pinellas.k12.fl.us/). I do not know if this is the Arthur you seek or not.
If you have further information about this Arthur Norwood, a relative of mine, I would gladly receive it.

Hi,

I'm doing research on my great-great grandmother, Rebecca Jane Norwood. I have her family bible which shows her parents were Alexander Hamilton Norwood and Abigail Douglass and her husband was Silas Judson Pratt. I know some information about her married life, but know nothing about her parents or any possible siblings. From reading the other guestbook messages, it looks like other people have some information on these people and I'd love to see what other people have.
Thanks.

Hi there!
I saw an entry on your Norwood site that mentioned an Abigail Ogilvie, daughter of Thomas Ogilvie from Otsego, Co. N.Y. I am looking for a Hugh Ogilvie whose family may have lived in the same area around that time. Hugh went on to marry Clarissa Winch(born in 1801)and eventually emigrated to Ontario, Canada in the 1820s - 1830s. As I have hit a wall in my search, I was hoping you had more info on the Ogilvie family and with any luck maybe a connection! Thanks so much,
Linda - email- sparklefreak@gmail.com

I probably should have put this information in my last post. It is from my grandmother, Donna (Taylor) Jones. David Daniel Taylor and Alice Norwood are her grandparents. You mistakenly cited Dave Taylor as being born in Vermont, he was not born in Vermont though. Please see attached e-mail.

David Daniel Taylor - Born in Geneva, Switzerland. Migrated to South Dakota as a young man with two of his brothers to manage a ranch(none of them knew about ranching but never the less, were hired by this Englishman , a gentleman rancher) Met Alice Norwood and I don't know where they married but moved to Vermont. One of his brothers moved to North Walpole, NH., he had married a German lady, Aunt Mary, who was wonderful). Grandfather Taylor, Algernon, lived with his two brothers and one sister in Westminster, VT. At the age of eight, he was asked by his father to pick an apple which Grandpa did and Great Grandpa ate it without peeling it and some of the peel caused an obstruction in his intestine. The surgery at that time was very poor, and done at home and he didn't live through it. Grandmother Norwood Taylor decided to move back to her family in Bonesteel, SD. They took a freight train with their animals clear across the country and she homesteaded in Bonesteel.Somewhere along the line, Grandpa Taylor met VIOLET WRAY who was very beautiful and was a school teacher in a small town called Kilgore,Neb.

Hello there - haven't "talked" to you in a while - you were having some difficulty as I remember it - hope all is well with you now. I'm back beating the bushes looking for the connection between Sickles and Norwood - have a couple of lines but little detail - do you have anything? By the way, I have devoted all my time to the Andrew Norwoods of NYC - in all census reports from 1790 through late 1800's - Andrew Sickles Norwood my g-g-grandfather.
Also found the reference to Thomas Norwood Sickles - colored troops in Civil War - wonder if the Norwoods or Sickles had slaves - haven't found any record of that.
Your site remains fascinating - wish I could connect all the dots!

I found your entry while looking for information about Abigail Ogilvie. I believe that there is a connection between my family and your Abigail. I believe that she was the daughter of Thomas Ogilvie and Abigail Glean. I have a lot of material on the Glean line, but not much on the Ogilvie, as I am not an Ogilvie, nor a Glean for that matter. But a sibling of one of my ancestors was named Thomas Ogilvie Macomb, and, as you are probably aware, there is not much out there about the Ogilvies.
That particular branch of my family had LOTS of connecions to the West Indies, especially Cuba and Grenada. If you are interested in seeing if any of this fits with your family, please let me know. My interest is in Thomas Ogilvie but I also have a connection to the Tallmadge family that also connects to Cuba.

We found your information interesting. We have traced from our line back to William Norwood born in 1842 in Ireland. The story goes there were four brothers who came from Ireland who were painters, that is the only info we have on this line.
We have William who married Kate Franklin who was born in 1844 in New York. She is supposed to be from Benjamin Franklin's adopted son Hanford.
Do you have more info on William Norwood's parents?

We are in the process of researching one Thomas Sickles who did a lot of wheeling and dealing in property here [village of Gilbertsville, NY, township of Butternuts, county of Otsego] between 1790's and 1810 while living first in Hoosick,[Rensselaer County] NY, possible here briefly, and then at Utica [Oneida County] NY. We were very intrigued to find the "Deed Abstract-Hannah Norwood" while looking for references to Thomas Sickles as we have a Deed for property sold here by Thomas Sickles in 1801 with witnesses John Norwood and Richard Sickles. We have additional information about this Thomas Sickles. It there a possibility that this Thomas Sickles is the husband of Mary Norwood?

Glad to see another Norwood site. My Grandfather, Douglas (Douglass) Norwood was born September 7, 1837 In Skaneateles, Onondaga County, New York. Our family does not have any written history of his ancestors. The 1850 Census of New York shows Douglas at the age of 13 living with a family of Archibald Douglas. The 1840 Census shows an Alexander H. Norwood with children, however he is not listed in the 1850 Census. We are at a loss and have not been able to find any traces of the Norwood ancestors. If you find Douglas in your research I would appreciate any help you may be able to give me.

I have the decendants from Grandpa forward, and would be open to sharing this with any Norwood we may be connected to.

We had Richard Norwood in our family tree file but did not have any brothers or sisters for Andrew. I am trying to do a little research on the Norwood side but am a beginer at this. Mostly what I have has been pasted down to me from relations. One thing I am questioning tho from your site is the picture of Louis and his wife, Elizabeth. You have top row, Elizabeth & Alice. Bottom row Louis and Mary Jane. Mary Jane looks old enough to be a wife and possible Alice but the picture of Elizabeth looks far to young. Could the names be mixed up?
