Hello Ashley,
My Name is Tom Moriarty I was born and reared in Tournafulla in a place we called the "TOP ROAD" I attended Glengort National School and I walked past the PRIVATES every day that I went to school, I remember Dominick the Yank as we called him when He came back to live in Tour after spending so many years here in the USA I believe he returned to his native Tour sometime in the early fifties.
I used to look forward going to THE PRIVATES HALL for to dance a good polka, I remember so well JULE used the wear the ARMY coat and the (MINERALS) soda I used to love to drink I also knew most of the hurlers in that 1931 picture as well as some of the people that signed the guest book.
The current picture of Tour looks great, I can picture in my mind where it was taken from and it looks like John Joe Leahy's field it is great to have a little of HOME right here in my den.
God Bless you for bringing back great MEMORIES from the past I hope you dont mind me dropping in and sharing some of my thoughts of how much I enjoyed growing up in that beauatiful village that will always be HOME to me even though I left 50 years ago to seek fame and fortune in the USA.
You certainly can be proud of the Ahearns that have gone on before you they have left a wonderful legacy, the good thing about TOUR is it will always be there and while I am alive I will visit the old haunts I used to know.
Slain Leat,
God Bless,
Tom Moriarty

The website is great! My BUCKLEY Family is from the area just north of Toonafulla of Templeglantan and the parish of Monagea. They lived there in the 1800s and my great-grandfather Patrick Buckley came to NYC and Brooklyn in 1890. His father was Timothy BUCKLEY and mother was Margaret GUINANE. The names of DORE, SULLIVAN, LEAHY, HARTNETT, GUINANE, GUINEY, SEXTON, AHEARNE, FEALY, O'CONNOR, SWEENEY all keep on showing up. I am very interested in the area and enjoyed the website!
Name: darren gray <darrengray@gmail.com> Date: 2007-01-18 The City/Town I live in is new york Comments:
This is my third comment, as they appear backwards from the time entered. I for got to add the family names of O'connor and Sheehan. These families also married and remarried throughout the 1800's and 1900's with the Aherns, Leahy's, O'sullivans, O'gormans, Harnets or Hartnets ( I don't have the records in front of me, I forget the spelling), Mulcahy's, also Noonan. Other names I left out were the Linane's and the Dore's. My great Grandmother was a Dore who married a Mulcahy (my great grand father). But my records show the mulcahy's marrying Dores in the early 1800's as well. The same with Leahy. My grandfather's ( Jack Mulcahy )sister married a Leahy, but the mulcahy's in Tour have been marrying Leahy's( also in Tour) as far back as the year 1800. That's the furthest my record go back.

I just left a comment, sorry for all the typing errors. After viewing the pictures of your family members, I am now sure we are related, or at least that our families have married each other, still making us related. Your relative Dominic came to America to live with a cousin. A Mulcahy. And 2 other relatives of yours married Leahy's. Like I said in my last comment, I come from the Mulcahy's and Leahy's of Tournafulla and in the records I have of our family tree, my family married into the Ahern family of Tour. Mulcahy's Pub in Tour is owned by my mother's first cousin, as it was handed down by her uncle. A lot of people visiting this site are questioning whether they might be related, and the ones that know their families came from Tour with the surnames of O'sullivan, harnett, mulcahy, Leahy, O'gorman, well... we are all related. I would like to get in touch with you ashly. I'll probably Email you

Very nice sight.I'm from here but my mom is from Ireland. My grandfather is Jack Mulcahy from the Commons in Tournafuller, In the hurling picture of '31, that's my great uncle, Tommie Leahy standing next to Bill Ahern.
The funny thing is that after readin all your guests' comments, that I'm related to many of them. Definitely Eneas Talbot whose mother was Joan Mulcahy. He's my mother's first cousin. I have records of the Mulcahy family going back to the 1800's, that is the Mulcahy's from tournafulla.
Throughout the 1800's and the 1900's they married, and continued to re-marry into the Aherne, Leahy, O'sullivan, and Hartnett families. You have guests from Tour emailing you with all of these names. I'ss probably try to email them to introduce myself. I hereby introduce myself to you, Ashly as well as a distant cousin, as I'm sure you found out through your research that the Aherns and Mulcahys are related.

I have really enjoyed reading about the Ahern family. The photographs are very good. I knew Jack 'The Private' Ahern & his wife Jule, his son's Dominic & Lar and daughter Ellen. I remember going to Jack's dance hall in Tournafulla during the late 1950's & early 1960's. On a Saturday night he used to coat the dance floor with parafin and lux soap to make it nice and slippery to dance on. Peter O'Connor and his band used to play there. We had some really great nights there. Jack.D Harnett used to play there aswell, along with some of the son's & daughter's of Jim Connors from the Top Road. The Brosna Band from Brosna, Co. Kerry played there aswell.

Both Will and Gladys were so in love with our dancing, "You remind me of the famous Cancinos" Will would say. Two great Vaudevillians, I still see Will with his rope in hand with Gladys dancing at his side.

I enjoyed viewing your website. My Aherne interest is the Aherne's from Glensharrold, Ardagh, County Limerick and the Sheehy family from Glenastar. Margaret Sheehy married Thomas William Aherne about 1930 at Glensharrold. They had nine children. Thomas himself was from a very large family of about 17 children. Some of the family still live where the original cottage was.
Does anyone there know if the Tour Aherne's and the Glensharrold /Ardagh Aherne's could be related ? I would be very interested to find out if there is any connection.
I have been lucky enough to visit Ireland twice, staying in Glensharrold and Balleniska, which are both situated not far from Newcastlewest, but on the opposite sides to each other .
I remember passing through Tour quite a few times.
Two of my daughters are currently living in Limerick after seeking their Irish roots, four years ago. They love the way of life there.

Just located your site. I have a cousin, who in 1903 moved to New Haven, CT. and was employed by the Ahern Co. Would this Co. be part of your family? Any information on this Company would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am a grandson of Mary (May) Bertha Ahern Carroll who lived in Cresco, Iowa. She was born in the late 1800's in Iowa and married James Emmett Carroll, also from Cresco, Iowa in 1910. I was just looking to see where Ahern's lived in Ireland.

Hello, I along with my girlfriend Kristen are the current owners of 49 Fountain street, in New Haven, CT. I was aware the ahern family lived here, and attempted to gather information on them. I am very glad to see the Picture you have of him on this site as well as the picture taken of my house (49 fountain). The picture was taken this past summer, as I can se the front door was painted and the House plaque is on the front. I only wish whoever took the picture would have contacted me, I would have loved to talk. Please do e -mail me I have some things here in the house that belonged to Mr and Mrs Ahern. Just today I found in the basement a paycheck envelope for Mr. Ahern. This house is continually giving up pieces of the past.

Hi,
I'm a native of Tour myself, David 'mon' Leahy was my granduncle, so I suppose we're connected! David's sister Catherine 'Kit', was my grandmother, my father being her son Patrick 'Patsy'.
It's a very nice site, great to see some Tour info on the web,
Thanks!

My ancestor (John Thomas Ahern) also came from the area around Newcastle West, County Limerick, Ireland. What I've been able to find out so far, is that his parents were dairy farmers in the mid 1800's. John Thomas Ahern was born 01/06/1845 on the Isle of Jersey while his parents were there buying cattle. He also had a brother William. We have them emigrating to St. Louis, Missouri, and sometime in 1866 he married a Ellen Kellerd (not sure of the spelling of her name). She was also from County Limerick, born 02/22/1851. Soon after they moved to New York City.
Would be interested if our two families were connected, being they came from the same general area of Limerick.

I'm seeking info of Ahern, my wifes side of the family. Attempting to find out where they came from in Ireland. John Ahern b1825 married Eliz R Brown b1828, in 1852 in City Hall, New York City, and lived in Brooklyn NY. John had brother William who married Jane Brown, Eliz. sister. Johns son Fred. Wm. Ahern married Annie Hill Stirrup in Brooklyn. Fred and Annie were my wifes grandparents.
Enjoying your site. Just getting started on the Ahern search.

I have the same last name but I don't believe we are related. I don't know much about my family's history because they all died at fairly young ages.
But your site is very interesting to read and look at. Thank you for opportunity.

My sister-in-law,Phyllis Giordano, had a grandmother, Mrs. Ahern. I remember everyone calling her Grandma, so I have no first name. She died in the late '50's-early'60;s. So when I saw the info on Rootsweb about new family information, I had to look.
The site is great!

I have a John Ahern that married Marjorie Yore, I believe in California. I don't have the dates of either one. Her father was Frank Joseph Yore b. 1873 and mother Della Jane Vahle (California, USA). Franks father was Peter Yore b.1822 (son of Michael Yore from County Meath,we don't know the town yet-and settled in Deerfield Illinois).

I like your site - my paternal great grand mother was a Margaret Ahern (b 1843) who married Michael Mortell in 1867 in Co Limerick.
They lived around Croom. They (and their descendants) all stayed in Ireland - my parents were the first in my line to emigrate.

Hi,
I just found your site and think it's very well done, so far. I'd be interested in seeing what you do with it in the future.
I have some informatuion on an Ahern family that might of interest you. I don't know if they are closely related to your line or not, but how many Aherns could there be from Ireland?
I grew up in a tiny town in California, named Port Costa. I used to deliver papers to two sisters, Mary and Nora Ahern. They never married, but I remember they were sweet ladies. I think might have been twins, but I can't be sure of that. I know I always had a hard time distinguishing between them. I think they had a brother named Bill who didn't live with them, but visited them often. I'm not sure if he ever married or not. They are descendants of Irish Catholic immigrants and went to church every week, that much I do know.
If you think these people are related to your family somehow, I can try to find out more about them if you'd like. Let me know. My mother probably remembers who their parents are and I can ask her.

Beautiful website!
My mother, Catherine O'Sullivan, was born in Tour. Her sister, Nell, married Jim "the Slate" O'Sullivan. Another sister, Madge O'Sullivan worked in Nancy Ahearn's shop in the village. I believe that the O'Sullivans are related to the Ahearns. My cousins, Patrick O'Sullivan and his family, and Nonie Callaghan are now living in Tour.

My grandfather was Michael Ahearn, born in Limerick around 1860. His parents were Michael Ahearn and Mary Norris, both of whom were born and died in Ireland. Michael emigrated to the US in the late 1890's and settled in Yonkers NY, where he died in 1943.
