Thank you for the time you have devoted to researching the Hughes family history and especially for correcting Lucy's errors. I have a copy of the microfilm of the diary of Archelaus Hughes, III, in which he writes that the "Hughes family is of Welch descent. Three brothers came over to America and settled in Virginia and Maryland about 150 years ago. Their names were Archelaus, Leander qnd Orlando". His account would place their arrival about 1675. Has anyone done research in Maryland? Charlene

I am so sad for the tradgedy that causes me to write in this guestbook. No one will ever know what pain Kay has experienced. Hunter, thank you for loving Kay unconditionally as you are one of very few in Kay's family that has the capability to do this. Kay was very unique and had many burdens in her life, so to hear of her passing is almost bittersweet. I thank God for her life, the lives she brought into this world,(one of which I have just learned of myself through this website)and the lives she touched during her very difficult existence here on earth. I am viewing the news of her death as God having Mercy upon his child and allowing her to come home and live eternally under his unconditional love. I am sorry to say that I was not very close with Kay as far as keeping in touch but she was in my thoughts and I feel that although we never spoke of family matters, we probably were more connected than we ever realized. To Ricky and Ryan remember your mother with love as I know she loved you both and did the best she could with what life dealt her.God bless and comfort you both. As for the daughter I just learned about,God bless and know that your mother's soul was a sweet one.

Though I didn't know Kay personally, we shared walking this path of reunion with our children (both daughters) lost to adoption. Kay joined my Sunflower support group in June of 2005, after 'connecting' with her daughter, Lisa. I know that she was thrilled to know her daughter's name and that she was OK, a major worry of birthmoms everywhere. I pray that all Kay's family finds the strength to cope with the days ahead, and will share her life with Lisa. My deepest sympathies in her sudden loss.

I first met Sandi in an adoption chat room around 1997 soon after I reunited with Hope Marie. I remember seeing this name skyblu in the chats but she never spoke ,so one night I said" Hi skyblu ", your not talking but I hear the wheels turning your head. She IMed me and laughed. That was the beginning of sharing with another Mom all the pain of having lost our precious daughters to adoption.
I met Sandi in person for the first time in 2,001 when we went to Joes" march for open adoption records ,but first we toured Virginia and then went to stay with two adoptees we had become friends with who were also going to the March.
Sandi so wanted to find her lost daughter more than anything and finally her dream was realized in 2,004 and she was hoping to reunite in person this summer. She wanted that more than anything else in the world.. I will miss Sandi so much!
Love , Linda, Mom of Hope Marie, taken by adoption brokers in 69 and returned home to heal 2-22-97

by Kays request in year 2000,I began helping her in her search for her adopted daughter and worked along with three other searchers until she was found.....I think we all agreed it was one of the hardest searches we have ever done....there were times we would run out of clues, and it looked hopeless to find the right name on a list of about 250 names...but we didnt give up and finally one of the searchers in Marietta Ga. was able to zero in on the right name....I dont know how much contact Kay had with her daughter but I believe she was happy just to know her name and that she was ok. I feel I have lost a friend because when we do searches we get very emotional attached to the the person we are helping....My sincer condolences to Kay's family and loved ones...Hazel Kaisinger

I still live very near my grandparents home in Nelson County, Virginia. I search the courthouse records at Amherst, Nelson, Albemarle, and Buckingham. I have been unable to find my ancestors in the Hughes line before John Hughes born in 1785. After studying the records of the Goochland and Cumberland County, I find many names that are still associated with the family. I do know my early family settled on the James River. This is from family history passed down to us.

I think your web site is excellent and I appreciate the work you have put into it.

I believe I am descended from the Hughes family that we find in the 1720-40's in Goochland and Cumberland Counties. My earliest proved ancestor is John Hughes who lived near the James River in Albemarle County, Virginia, near Scottsville in 1815. We believe he married Mary (Polly) Williams Jean and their son John Hughes who married Elizabeth Ann Proffitt was my great, great, great grandfather.

I have in my possession most all of Lucy Henderson Horton's papers as well as her hand written manuscript of her book. I know Becky and Larry. They are members of Hughes Families. They have done some excellent research on Leander and Archelaus. I need to study their work further but at this point I feel that their work on Orlando could be wrong. Some of us have proof to believe that Orlando was the granson of the immigrant, born i America rather than migrated.

Hello, my new found cousin. I very much enjoyed your website. I loved your poems, especially the one about the military. My granduncle, Lloyd R. McCarty was a WWII hero. He and another soldier, John Mark, were in the 36th Texas Division in Salerno, Italy and captured 32 soldiers in one day. The poem very much expresses how I feel about him and all of the other WWII veterans. I also loved the pictures. Old pictures are one of my favorite things. You have done a great job. Keep up the work!

George Hunter,

I read the Critz history with interest. I believe that your source in Europe for this family is in error. They left Nassau-Siegen (Freudenberg more exactly) in 1738 intending to go to Virginia. Their choice of a ship was very unlucky. Many perished (about 2 of every 3) and they were shipwrecked off the coast of Virginia. They wanted to join other Germans from Nassau-Siegen who formed a part of the Germanna Colonies. I have written some about this episode. If you send me your USPS address, I will send you some information.
John

I really enjoyed reading thru your site. I was hoping to make a connection with your Critz family.
My gg grandmother was Martha Caldonia Critz born in Ga abt 1856mother and father both born in NC per various census records, she married 1st a Calvin or Ray at the age of 15 and had 2 daughters by him and then married 2cd William David Webb prior to 1880 in AR together they had 8 children.
I have been searching for many years and connot come up with anything definite to tie her into any other Critz line. Possibly your Peter, maybe someday I will find the right piece to the puzzle.
Anyway great fantastic site, and thank you so much for sharing.

Comments:
I'm just curious if there is a connection between my immediate family and the Hamon Critz's of Virginia. My uncle Bob told me so, but I don't know the truth of it. The sketchy facts I have are that my dad, George T. Critz, grew up on a farm in Ohio during the Depression. If pressed, I'd say the name of the town was Milford (or Milton). My grandfather's name was Timothy and his children (all sons) were: JACK, WILLIAM (Bill), ROBERT (uncle Bob) and George (who always went by the name Ted). I am told that for certain one relative is Huey Critz, a second baseman for the Cincinnatti Reds in the 20s. The oldest relative I can remember was Percy Critz who lived near Cincinnatti (I think). He was in his 90s around 1960. His daughter, Aunt Florence, is the person who actually tried to keep the family history and I believe it is from her research that we learned we might be related to Hamon Critz.
Any of this familiar to anyone? Sure would be fun to get more details.

Thank You Mr. Hunter George and I have enjoyed visiting this site very much.
