Hi, I was researching my great grandmother Mary Missouri Marsh Walker and found your site. Awesome. My grandmother told me that her mother and father were married back east. He was a preacher and started traveling west. Almost all their children were born in a different state. When they got to New Mexico (were my grandmother was born)Mary said no futher. The land is just getting worst. Moses went on and made it to California. Grandma Nelpha said that they saw him just often enough after that not to be able to declare him dead. About once every 7 years. After a while Mary Missouri decided to come back east. She had six live children and they traveled in a covered wagon. She stopped at Anadarko, Ok. My grandmother told me that on the way back. Marshall or Mansel got caught in a snake pit. The other (Marshall or Mansel) went and got their mother. She grabbed up a broom, ran to the snakes and started sweeping those snakes into the air. Grabbed the son and swept out of there.

I recieved a email from a Jennifer Tidwell in Batesville, MS today and learned of your web page. We (my family) know little beyond our grandparents, as they were illiterate, and nothing was written down. We have "stories" that our side of the family, moved into Mississippi from somewhere near Walker Co. Alabama. However we have little or no proof, and I am at present trying to get a copy of the notes made by an Aunt. I hope to have the notes photocopied and organized before the end of the year.

My grandfather did some in depth research on the Tidwell family. I will have to borrow his information and post it here.

I am Jennifer Tidwell, Batesville, MS. Born 1976
My father: Stephen Wayne Tidwell, Batesville, MS. Born 1950. M. Rolanda J. Leppic
Grandfather: Billy Wayne Tidwell, Batesville, MS. Born 1931. M. Mary Louise Appleton
Great Grandfather: Deward Tidwell, Batesville, MS. Unsure of DOB. M. Ida Mae Bright (Consequently Deward's sister, can't remember her name, married Ida's brother Riley Bright)
GG Grandfather: James Whitfield Tidwell, Batesville, MS. Unsure DOB. Married to Jenny (don't know maiden name).

What little history I do know is that two brothers came to America from England when they were very young (teenagers) and settled in what were the colonies at the time. They were farmers in Virginia maybe? I'll have to get the geneaolgy report to be sure. At any rate, they have been farmers ever since. I have dirt in my blood! This information is sketchy at best. I'll have to confirm it with Pap's records.

I do know that James Whitfield Tidwell had several brothers and pretty much everyone in this county with the last name of Tidwell is related. The research I've done says the name originated in Devonshire, England.

Anyone who can shed some light?

Jennifer Tidwell
Panola County Mississippi

Some of the info on the origins of the Tidwell line can be found on http://tidwell.bravepages.com Some of the South Carolina Tidwells just had a family reunion.. and going back to the 12hundreds the Tidwell family can be found in Dorchire England. Lord of the manor was a Man with the sirname Tidwell.. and therefor the town was known as Tidwell Town. Also Tidwell can be traced back to the French Hougernots. Richard Tidwell was the first Tidwell to come to America as a indentured servant for being a horse theif.. an original Tidwell family crest has been found.. although laying claim on it would mean having actual direct line of decent from the lord of Tidwell Town :) hope this helps

This email addresss is temporary since I'm in the process of moving and changing jobs so I will contact you later. Morning Tidwell and Thomas Edward Tidwell are my great great great grandparents from what my mother can figure. My mom is Monia Wynell Tidwell and her mother was Leamor Jewell Tidwell. My mother was named after her great grandmother who she said was named Mourning Star Tidwell. My mothers grandparents moved from Alabama to Texas in the early 1900's. We attended a family reunion in Alabama when I was around 13 which would have made it around 1968. I know there had to have been around 100 people show up for that thing. My brothers and I have always been interested in knowing more about our family.

I have a death certificate on Joel that says he was born in GA on July 18, 1864. He died on January 13, 1954 and is buried in Woodlawn Memorial Park at Orlando, FL. My grandmother, Ida P. Phillips-Cornelius is buried at the Concord Primitive Baptist church cemetery just across the Blount county line in Marshal County. All of her siblings lived in Oneonta, AL. I cannot find anything that gives Joel's fatherís name. I do not have any information on Lulizar. Do you have any information that you can share with me? Sincerely, Randall M. Haney

Hi, sorry about not saying where the cemetery is.My grandfather's father was Royal Edwin Tidwell who was married to Jane Margaret Nelson. Royal's father was Peter Tidwell, Born27 Mar 1831 in Randolph, Washington, New York. His father was Absalam Tidwell, b. 8 Mar 1792 in either Illinois or Tennessee, I don't know which yet.
Anyway, there are several of the Tidwells burried in this cemetery. It isn't far(about 20 miles) from my home. When the snow melts enough to see the headstones, I'll get all the names and send them to you. We are in the middle of a bad snowstorm right now, so far about 18 -20 inches and still coming. Let me know if any of these names match your line. Randy

My grand mother was Viola Tidwell from Winston County Alabama. I am just getting started on this side of my family. My grandfather was Allen Hill (who I believe was from Randolf County).

Our Tidwells had an ancestor (I think great grand father) named Rufus Tidwell born at Oklahoma City on the Indian Reservation. Any leads would be appreciated.

The Winston County Tidwells stayed either neutual or Union during the Civil War (the county stayed Union), with many Tidwell names listed in the 1st Alabama Calvary (U.S. Volunteers), with was Sherman's escort during the "March to the Sea".

Because of this, a lot of Tidwells were forced to leave Alabama during the war and a lot never went back after the war. This contributed to the migration of the name to the West.

My ggg-grandparents were William and Arrena Branham of Blount Co. They were there by 1840 and, except for a time in IL during the war, remained until after 1870. They had several children (including a Uriah and Jeremiah), owned land near where Inland Lake is located and were members of the Pisgah Church. I think William was Jennie's brother and their mother was named Fanny. She signed for Jennie to marry Blake Tidwell there in Blount County. Please let me know if you have any additional information regarding the Branham family.

Great site you have developed. I haven't had time to trace some of the names in "your(our)tree" but there a good possibility that most Tidwells are related. In the 1600(?) there was three brother in VA. and most Tidwells can trace back to them.
For reference check out a book entitled "MCCALL TIDWELL AND ALLIED FAMILIES". It is out of print but I have found copies in various libraries (Houston and Memphis to name two).
Good luck on your quest and I look forward to seeing more of your work

I posted a message earlier, read through some of the other messages, and was responding to one of the messages and giving some details of my ancestry when I thought I might post it here, even though I know this really isn't a message forum, for anyone else who might find it helpful -
It's certainly not complete, but with even a cursory glance, it's easy to see how easily the family probably got split up and wound up all over the nation.

I am decended from Richard b 1635, via Robert b. abt 1690, William Carr Tidwell (abt 1720), Reuben (abt 1770), Robert abt 1814, Richard T. 1 April,1845, to my grandfather Nathan Jerry. Most of the research I have was done by a cousin, Joyce Grigsby, with another cousin and I picking up where she left off and attemping to fill in some of the "holes."

From my records, and understanding,

There is information indicating Richard may have had a sister, Martha, or maybe a daughter. She had, I think, an
illegitimate child.

Robert had two sons, William Carr and John. I have no information on John other than she (Joyce) says William Carr may have married John's widow, Anne Sanford. At any rate, William Carr and Anne had a son, Reuben, late in William Carr's life as he died in 1734.

Reuben, on the other hand, had 12 children, Mark; Mary; William; Edward; Frances, m. Andrew Weber; Ralph; Richard; John; Betty Elizabeth; Robert (my 3xggfather) b. 1814; Joseph; and Rebecca. Other than information about my Robert, and the marriage of Frances to Andrew Weber, the only info I have on the rest are some birth and death dates.

My 3x ggfather Robert, had 9 children - Elizabeth b.1838 m. 1855, John Denison; Samuel b.1840; LeRoy b.1842; Richard T.- don't know what the T. stands for, b. 1 April 1845 [ had 9 children]; Susan; Thomas [had 5 children]; Sara; Emma; and John Dee [who had 6 children].

Richard T. b. 1 April 1845 d. 4 Oct 1917 m.7 Jan 69,Rebecca McGee - had 5 children -
Dorinda N. b 1870; Mattie B. (Bama) b 1871; Florence A. b. 1874; Fannie b.1877; and William T. b. 1879.

Richard T. m 2nd - 3 March 1886, Nancy (Nannie) C. Urban Erwin b. unk d.bef 1900 - had 4 children -
Richard Edward (Ed), b. Nov 1887; Albert H. b. April 1889; Jessie F. bFeb 1891; and Nathan Jerry (my gfather) b25 Aug 1894. - (This was the family I knew.)

Richard T. m 3rd. Abt. 1910,Lucinda Dennison. No children.

Thomas b abt 1847 m. Nancy Young. They had 5 children - Edward b. 1871; James b 28 February 1878; Frank b 1882; Roxie (daug) 1887; Lizzie (daug) b 1890.

John Dee b.01 May 1856 d.20 May 1918, buried Cox Cemetery
M.28 September 1884,Dorinda Ann (Ann) Billingsly

Beulah Mae b 16 August 1888 d05 August 1973 m Henry Erskine Grigsby [had 8 children];
Doxie (Doc) Oliver - (my great uncle who lived about an 16 of a mile up the road from my grandparents)b15 January 1892

My Tidwell family, from everything I have discovered, came from Virginia to Tennessee to Lauderdale Co., Alabama when Alabama was first opened to development in the 1800's. I haven't yet looked thru your research, but there is probably a connection to your ancestors and mine. I was told by a researcher 15+ years ago that there were several Tidwell brothers who came to America in the early 1700's.
I've managed to trace (using previous family research) back to the 900's.

It's so nice to finally see the Tidwell family name appear more and more on the internet. Thank you for sharing your work.

Hello Philip,
Hope you and family are doing well. I have slowed down doing genealogy! Have been at it for 20+ years. I collected thousands of Tidwell names while I was searching my line from Va SC Ga Ala and Tenn!
I have lots of families and single Tidwell names in the southern states. My Tidwell family connection in Blount co was Benjamin and Amelia Tidwell--from Meriwether co Ga.
I tried to make connection with Ga Tidwells and the Cherokees. Didnt make much headway as the early Tidwell/Cherokee families kept their mouthes shut. The enrollment of the Cherokees in Ga gives the best sources of
Tidwell/Cherokee connections.
The Tidwells of Walker, Marion and Fayette cos I have met recently open up to their Indian connections!
Keep up the good work. I could have used your and other pages long ago in my searches!!

I live in E Tenn near Knoxville and make anual trips to Blount and Houston cos where some decendants of the second family of Isaiah P Tidwell live.

I have corresponded with Ms Melba Lowe (in allgood Al)for years.

I see you around the web a lot! Your site is looking really good and it is easy to move around! I am only a Tidwell by marriage/divorce but hey once a Tidwell always a Tidwell! Besides we have a line of our own little Tidwells starting up with 4 grandchildren one of which is a Tidwell by name! Have some information but not documented for the most part with birth/marriage/death certificates! I have found the Tidwell family very interesting both the living and the dead! This family goes back to Etowah County, Blount County and the Georgia Indian country. My father in law died in Hokes Bluff, Ala in 58 or 59 I think.

Good work on your part. I haven't a clue as to how to really do this research....I figure one day I'll get serious instead of poking here and there. Happy Hunting!

I ended up here because I am searching for the surname MOONIE from Alabama and or TX. My great grandmother was named MARTHA Caroline Lucinda MOONEY CALHOUN PERKINS. She was born in Alabama in 1852. Lived in Sherman, Grayson Co. TX and later McKinney, Collin Co. Tx. until her death in 1923.
It is believed that her father's name was WILLIAM MOONIE and that her mother's name was MARTHA JANE FAULK.

If I am here by mistake please forgive me and move on.

By the way, you have done a wonderful job here! I love how you have displayed your info. Great taste, no flutter-clutter plus it is easy to use.

Hi Philip-

My name is Tom Fendley. Was doing a web-search of my last name when I came
across you site.

I live in Chicago, though my father (James Robert Fendley) is from Texas,
born in 1931. His dad was also James, born also, I believe, in Texas. He
was born in about 1900 (I can find out exact date).

I'm interested in the work you've done. In fact, my older brother Ed
compiled his own family tree research about 20 years ago. I don't have those
results with me but, if I'm not mistaken, he traced the roots of the
Fendley's back to Germany (or maybe Chzechoslovia), where our family name was
Fendletts. The name, according to his research, got changed at some point
after the family came to the U.S.

Anyway, my dad has brothers and sisters in Texas and Alabama. His sister
Dorothy became Dorothy Shippen about 40 years ago and lives, last I heard, in
Prattville (?), Alabama.

I've CC'd this note to my brother Ed so, when he gets a chance (he's out of
the country now, but will be back shortly), he may be able to tell you what
he came up with.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Tom Fendley

Tidwell's all go back to Westmorland Co.VA. I have been
researching Tidwell family for 30 or so years. I have been in Westmorland Co. spending hours looking at microfilm ,
also in Fairfield Co. S.C. county buildings. That was
before computers. The only thing I have been unable to find
is the ship and date that Richard Tidwell and 3 or 4 of his
brothers came over from England. If anyone knows anything
about the ship please send it to Phillip and I am sure he
will pass it on.
Phillip , you are doing a great job.

P>S> this has not been checked out. but I have a record , true or false. back to 1208. the last entry was Warren
of Tideswell , that was before they used first and last names. I found it on a CD Rom called "Family Tree Maker."

My lineage is: Robert and Monie Tidwell parents of Vardeman Tidwell who was the father of Steven Tidwell who was the father of Dicy Tidwell who married John Butler. John and Dicy were my great grandparents on my Mother's side.

Are you aware that a group of Tidwells moved into Dickson Co, TN before moving to Blount Co, AL?

Robert and Vardeman Tidwell once owned the land where the Birmingham, AL airport now stands. John and Dicy Butler are buried in New Hope Cemetery in Springville, AL.

Hello,
My Tidwell line also hails from Alabama. I know he was from a AL/AR bordertown. I am not sure if it is the same line as yours though. My relative is George W. Tidwell, my gggggrandfather. He served in the Civil War and was captured in either VA or TN (relatives disagree on where!). He spent time in Ft. Delaware and when released he joined the Yankee Army (as so the legend says). He then married Susan Byrnes. He settled in New Castle, Delaware. This is all I know about him. I wish I knew more information about him. I am hoping maybe you knew something about him or heard something about him. Or if we are a totally seperate line altogether. Your help is appreciated!!

Hi, Nice pages you have. My grnadfather was a Tidwell, but from Tn and died in Louisiana 1947. At least I believe he was from Tn. Haven't got his death record yet. They, I am sure, are all related somewhere. A friend of mine is a Tidwell (Al. and Ms.) She thinks the same.

Hope you have better luck than I in your quests.

I am researching the Fendley family. On 13 Oct. 1844 William Carter married Amanda Fendlay in Greenville District, SC, as reported in the Greenville Mountaineer, issue of October 18, 1844. They eventually moved to Alabama and I last find them on the 1880 census in Township 15, Range 1, Jefferson Co., Al. Ii am descended from their son, Thomas Lafayette Carter who died in Columbia, SC on 12 Jan. 1936. My uncle remembers going with T.L.'s daughter, Edna (my greatgrandmother) on the train to Birmingham to take T.L.'s body for burial. I have not been able to find where he is buried, but perhaps in Woodlawn Cemetery in Birmingham where William Thomas Carter is supposed to be buried according to Ancestral File.
My greatgrandmother, Edna Earle Carter, was born 13 Aug. 1871 in Village Springs, AL. Do you know where that is? I can't find it on a modern map. It was probably swallowed up by Birmingham.

If you are interested in my information I will be happy to share. Don't know if you are interested in collateral lines or not.

Good luck in your search.

Madelyn

Phillip, Do you know where the TIDWELL name came from? My Nephew has a school project, "His kindergarten class is studying the meanings of different names. His
teacher has asked for them to share with the class anything they may know about their name. Do ya'll know anything about Tidwell that might be helpful for him? Isn't it British? I think we saw a map that depicted a region in
England called TIDWELL?" I may be off base though.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I have relatives in Locus Fork. You may have seen them on AMERICA's MOST WANTED.... "Mickey & Randy Tidwell"

Robinette, who was a pilot and died in Italy in plane crash. Robert's wives name was Eldean and at the time of the crash they had a small son. They also lived in Indiana at that time also. My great-grandfather Arthur Tidwell was born in Tennessee in 1903, and the oldest living Tidwell in my family is my uncle R.B. Tidwell, who still lives in Nashville, was born in 1914. He is the brother of my great-grandfather and the uncle of my grandfather, Charles Tidwell, who was born in 1928. I sent this to say it's good to see recognition of Tidwells after awhile, especially since it has been a long time since we've had a family reunion.

I already known of one of your cousins that married one of my cousins (Ernest Fred Tidwell), and I'm pretty sure the Tidwell family is connected to my line of Langley's and Parish families of AL by other marriages..

While researching the name Tidwell I came up with your Web-page and am hoping that you are from the same Tidwells that I am from. By any chance does the name William Tidwell ring a bell with you? He was my Great-great grandmothers brother. If he is a descendent of yours I have a photo of him that I would be happy to post on my web-page for you or I could even mail a copy of it. His sister married a Thompson who married a Cleland. All are from Alabama and Georgia. Also was wondering what information, if any, you could give me on the Tidwells and Tuckers who are also related to the Tidwells. If you would like any of the Tucker or Tidwell photos just let me know.
Thanks for your time.

Phillip,

We share more than a name, my Tidwell line first appears in Fairfield County, South Carolina and came into Georgia to Meriwether County by way of Mississippi. Family tradition says our ancestor was a sheriff in Mississippi whose horse returned home with blood on the saddle. It was supposed he was murdered by horse thieves before 1850.

The wife, Jenny Ingram Tidwell relocates to Meriwether County, Georgia with her children including John Madison Tidwell...my great grandfather who was born in Mississippi in 1846. The family is listed on the 1850 census.

I have a web site for several Tidwell families in Meriwether County, Georgia at MyFamily.com; if you would like to search the site e-mail me for the password and information about how to logon.

I will revisit your web page from time to time; it looks very promising...keep up the good work.

Phil Tidwell
