Comments:
Thank you so much for all the work you have done on researching the Hall family. According to the information we have, our family goes back to Thomas Hall via John Hall > Alexander > Alexander> Isham. Is there anything at all on Thomas prior to this? Also, I have found a picture of the Alexander Hall homeplace (sold to a Chase). Did Alexander build this cabin, and if so, what was the location? Again, I thank you for a job well done!

My sister in law did some research and traced us back through Squire Hall, Isham III, Isham Jr and Isham Sr as direct ancestors to my father Clifford Sr, my grandfather Melvin and great grandfather Henry. I know one of the Ishams (Jr or III) moved to Floyd County which is where my father is from. Don't know too much about Isham Sr and there were conflicting stories of Squire serving in the 64th Conf Inf or the 39th Ky. Anything you know would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to know if Isham or others from the family were in the Revolution. I know one of the Ishams married the daughter of Revolution John Mullins. Excellent website. Thank you for some great information.

All records I find on Stephen Adams (b.1837) m. Alice Asberry indicate him dying in 1866. Sure could use some help proving he lived a lot longer than 1866.

Who is your biggest MYSTERY ANCESTOR? Robert "Robin"/"Bob" White
Comments:
I have been working on Robert White's family, attempting to determine if he is the missing, younger brother of my Vincent White of Craven Co, NC and trying to assist another researcher in determining if Robert & Margaret Stamper could be her Monroe Rufus White's parents. I have a lot of detailed census info on the entire family on a Word Doc and it is done in a descendancy chart format. The 1820 & 1830 census suggests that Robert & Margaret either have many unknown children or there were spouses of their children, living with them.

Rather than delete it (I don't believe he is my missing Robert White), I will be glad to forward the info to anyone who would like to have it. They can email me direct, at texastwin827@yahoo.com, and I will send it to them. No need to "waste" good research info!

I have found a lot of good info on your website, that have made some pieces fall in place and would complete some of your own research.

Comments:
I recently became aware of these ancestors on my Mother, (Inez Kennedy)side and that her Mother's grandparents, Austin & Amelia Mann, married Frankfort, Ind. Dec.24,1865 died in Lane County, Oregon- Austin died April 1, 1895.Their daughter, Dora Belle Mann (married Columbus Smith 1883 Boliver, MO),(Dora Belle Mann born Hillsburg Indiana 1865) and was my grandmother, Carrie Melissa Smith's Mother. I need to locate the record I have of I believe Amelia's parents, Jerg and Anna Margaret Mohn...Jerg Bernhart Mohn from Baden Wurttomberg, W. Germany. I don't know if I have Anna Margaret's maiden name or where she was from. We must be long lost relatives. It is interesting to find out about the past. My address is Barbara Lentz, P. O. Box 6175, Apache Junction, Arizona but I lived in Girard, Kansas where Dora Belle Mann(Smith) is buried in a country cemetery (Meyers cemetary south of Girard).

Below is information from the court records for Russell County, VA regarding Sarah Elizabeth Hogg (AKA Sina, Sena, Sinah). This is a ancestor or person of interest you have listed on rootsweb.com. Please follow along. We may be cousins. My ggggrandfather John Woods born 1791 is said to have walked from his home to Claiborne Co., TN while a lad of 14 in 1805. I think this is the "baseborn child" of Sarah Elizabeth Hogg for the following reasons:

1. I find no other child born in area on border of VA,NC, and TN with name John, Jon, or Jonathan Wood or Woods for any years close to 1791..
2. Family history as given by his son Elijah Woods states that he walked 75-100 miles on the wilderness trail while just a lad in 1805 to Claiborne Co., TN.
3. I find mention of James Hogg (brother of Sarah Elizabeth Hogg) on court records for Claiborne Co., TN in 1804.
4. Family history states that John Woods was apprenticed as blacksmith in Claiborne Co., TN.
5. Russell Co., VA records list John Wood(s) as father of said "baseborn child" that would have been born 1791. See below. I have all the records if you need them.
6. Family history does not mention parents of John Woods (1791-1867). He is listed as orphaned as a lad, but this is better than admitting to "baseborn" parentage. At age 14, I would suspect that support would stop and he would be booted out of home.

The only way to prove that this John Woods is the baseborn child mentioned in Russell Co., VA records would be through DNA testing to determine common ancestry with either female or male descendents of Sarah Elizabeth Hogg. I don't know very much about DNA testing. I will be willing to bear the costs of all testing. I think it can be done with a swab from the inside of the mouth.

Would you be a direct descendent (by blood either maternal or fraternal) of Sarah Elizabeth Hogg and would you be willing to have your DNA tested and compared with mine?

Your results and privacy will be respected in any way you desire. Please reply to this email at charles.w.woods@comcast.net or call Chuck Woods 231-744-0819 or give me your email or number and I will respond.

Thanks in advance,

Chuck Woods

Barbara was my dad's mother. Her parents were Hillard and Millie(Smith) Smith. She married Elhanon Jent in 1916, but I find no record of a marriage prior to that. She had two children, Hillard and Millie, and both used the Smith name. There was a rumor that my dad's "real" father was Andrew Porter of W. Va. Any knowledge of this lady would be greatly appreciated. You have done alot of work, was interested in Chief White
Cloud where connection came in. We have Chief Red Bird in our family line, believe it comes in with Combs family.
Delila Jones married my G.G.Grandfather 1838 Rockingham,NC
I was told by a Pee Dee Historian that our Delila was the daughter of Chief Lewis Jones of the Pee Dee. and since the
marriage was in Rockingham,NC it is likely they are Pee Dee. No one will assist me in retreving papers.please excuse mispelling.I don't want anything from the tribe, just our genealogy. at 66, with a pace maker, feel my time is limited.
We also have a connection with Iowa Tribe through Spoonamore family. Brashears- Choctaw.Have you checked the list at Carlisle Indian School? it is very interesting.

I have a lot of family history on my families, but would love to hear from someone that remembers Jack, John, Juanita and Jerry Palmer. Their mother was Nannie (Lane) Palmer. I wish I could find people that knew my Uncle Hagar Lane, he was married to Pansy (Wallace) Lane, and they lived in Harlan most of their lives. My great gramma Bell Lane was in the book "Hell in Harlan" and the whole family lived through those coalmine war days. Some of my mothers friends were Francis Fox, Ellen and Johnathan Madden, Dora Shoemate, Fred Pennington, and many more. They are probably dead now, but I have some pictures and stories that my mom passed on to me. My Aunt Roxy (Butler) Cox lived just across the line in Pennington Gap, Va.

I knew that my great great great grandparents were cousins and descendants of William Morris and Elizabeth Stipps/Stepps, but never could fill in the blanks. I've done a great deal of research on William. The site really helped me out. My great great great grandparents were John D. Morris and Sarah Morris. Their son, Earnest, was my great great grandfather. He married Elleweziah Querry in Nicholas County. Three of their sons--McHenry, Charles, and my great grandfather, William Walter Morris, moved to Fayette County. William Walter was born in 1877 and worked as a coal miner. He died pretty early in life, during the late 1920's, so my grandfather never knew too much about him. William Walter was married to Minnie Lee Flint. Minnie remarried to a man named McClannahan, but he died in the 1950's. My grandfather, Lester Melvin Morris, died in 1973, so I could never ask him questions and my aunts and uncles had no clue. I'd be glad to provide any information that I have on my Morrises. Thanks again, Kaci Foster-Veazey

Johnson Monroe's father died before he was born, in Colonial times a child was considered an orphan if its father died even if the mother was still living. In the Lunenburg Ct. VA Order Book 3 1754-1755 page 57 the Church Wardens Cumberland Parish bind out John Monroe (could this be short for Johnson?)orphan of John Monroe decd to Owen Franklin. As an adult Johnson owned property that adjoined some property owned by Owen Franklin. My speculation is that Johnson mother was related to the Franklins and that Owen took the 11 or 12 year old boy as an apprintice or to learn a trade.

Enjoyed your site. I too have been researching VA families, particularly Horton family. I believe that John Wesley Franklin, son of Elizabeth J. Neel and James Franklin, married Mary Francis Horton. Mary Francis Horton was the daughter of James Harvey Horton and Amanda C. Kilgore. She then married Henry R. Mitchell. James Harvey, son of William Horton and Francis Pendleton, had two children: Mary Francis Horton, and Hiram K. Horton. Hiram K. Horton is my great grandfather---he moved to MN by 1920. Hoping I am on right track! Thanks for sharing your info. Doris

Dear Dan Mohr,

What an amazing site.
Thank you for all your efforts.

I found several ancestors going back,
and I think I am beginning to untangle some
of the "Bell" mysteries, such as the relationships
between Frank B. Bell, and Hansford Bell, and so on.

I do have some information that could be added to your
file, if you would like. . . and I am curious about
our relationship, which I could not figure out . . .
but it looks like the Bells and the Mohrs are connected.

Information to add concerns

Luvy Bell: Actually, Lucy Bernadette Webb Bell, and her family for generations . . . (she is my grandmother, deceased).

Marriage partner and a bit of family of Frank B. Bell,
which extends back into Virginia history. . .

Let me know if you are interested.

Our grandparents and several infant relatives (Patterson) are buried there. A search by relatives from several states failed to find any of them on a recent visit.

Someone, somewhere, has to have some information about the buriels there.

Who is your biggest MYSTERY ANCESTOR? Martin Ramey
Comments:
Your website is great! My great grandfather is Martin Ramey born in VA approx. 1857 - raised in Pike Co. Ky. His parents are unknown. It was first thought that his father was Charles Ramey and mother was Nancy Case. Martin married Elmira Bartley on April 11, 1887 in Pike Co. Ky. There is an Alexander Martin Ramey who married a Mary Bartley (born Oct. 29, 1857 in Pike Co. KY) in 1880 in Minnesota. This Alexander Martin Ramey's father was Charles Ramey and mother Nancy Case. This is why I believe my Martin Ramey's parents are not Charles and Nancy.

My grandfather was Miles Ramey (born 8-3-1895 in Pike Co. KY. His father was Martin Ramey (born between 1845 and 1855 in Wise Co. VA) and married Elmira Bartley on 4-11-1887 in Pike Co. Ky.

I am not certain that his parents are Charles Ramey and Nancy (Case) Ramey. I have ordered Martin's Pension and War Records (was in the Battle of Little Big Horn) in hopes of getting his exact dob, parents names, death date and location (ordered 8 weeks ago). There are many errors on the various Ramey Trees. Andrew is one of Charles and Nancy's children, but I am not certain Martin is. I have a d.c. for a Martin Ramey who died in Douglas Oregon in 1935 whose parents where Charles and Nancy.

Anna (belived to be Easterling) md. Robert Shanklin Salyer in 1847. They divorced in 1867. I can find no record of her parents (unable to find marriage records) or no record of her after the divorce. Her eldest daughter is listed as head of household with some of Shanklin and Anna's younger children in 1870 County Census. What happened to Anna?

I have just recently heard the term Melungeon. Could this have been her status rather than a Cerokee? A mystery I would like to solve before I leave this world. Any clues or info from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

I saw this on Roots Web. Can you tell me where you got the information for Williams Date of Birth. I hope it is on a tombstone or written. But I understand his tombstone has been in a shed for quite a while and is not even in the cemetery where he is buried. That when they did something to the cemetery many years ago they did not know where it came from and therefore did not put it back. I think he was suppose to be buried on the first row with Elizabeth and Benjamind Bolling, her father.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Benjamin Bolling and William Short are my husbands ancestors. Ollie who married John Mullins is his great great great grandparents.

Who is your biggest MYSTERY ANCESTOR? Bad Lewis Hall and William C. Hall
Comments:
I've been searching for the ancestors of "Bad Lewis" Hall for years. He married Rhoda Bentley and Polly Ann Anderson and had children with a woman named Mary Mullins. I can not prove his ancestors. I have found some newspaper articles referring to Bad Lewis Hall and his death, however. In one article, the author is quoted as saying that he talked with Bad Lewis Hall and that Lewis told him that he was a near relative of Bad Talt Hall; I don't know how Lewis connects to Talt Hall. Also I have found another child of Lewis' named Lewis Hall, Jr. that was killed in a shoot out in McDowell Co. W.Va in 1891 with Samuel Steel and his son, Hiram, who were both killed also. Lewis escaped with minor injuries.

I have the names of the other children of Lewis and their spouses if you are interested. I know that alot of people use your site and list it in their sources.

Also, I have an ancestor named William C. Hall, who is the f/o Andy Hall who married Susie Isaacs and they lived in Dry Creek, Ky. I think that you have Andy listed as the s/o William D. Hall and Louanza Isaacs. (This is another Andy. Bill Dee Hall's son Andy was killed in 1882. I have newspaper articles referring to this murder also if you are interested.)

Anyways, the Andy Hall who married Susie Isaacs, was the s/o William C. Hall and Mary Polly Johnson (d/o Elisha Johnson and Elizabeth Mullins of Floyd County, Kentucky) William C. "Billy" Hall and Mary Polly Johnson - Hall are buried in the cemetery across the road from Andy and Susie Isaacs - Hall in Dry Creek, Knott County, Kentucky. Thanks!

You've got a good site and I applaud you for it!

Who is your biggest MYSTERY ANCESTOR? Alexander HALL
Comments:
My Alexander HALL was born about 1819 in Virginia (county unknown). He married Elizabeth L. MOUTRAY, daughter of William MOUTRAY and Mary FITZHUGH, about 1842 in Jackson Co., Missouri. She was born March 24, 1826 in Logan Co., Kentucky. They had three children, all born in Blue Township, Jackson Co., Missouri: Mary A. born about 1845 (marriage unknown); William Lee born July 2, 1847 who married 1) Virginia TAYLOR and 2) Frances Ann MCPHERSON; and Julia Jane born September 5, 1850 who married John BATEMAN. They were in Jackson Co., Missouri in 1850 and in McKinney, Collin Co., Texas in 1860. He enlisted in Company B 16th Regiment Texas Volunteers under Col. William FITZHUGH, his wife’s cousin, in April 1861. He only served about six months and then was discharged on account of his eyesight. He went totally blind about five years before he died. They have remained elusive in the 1870 census but may have been back in Jackson Co. as his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law are listed on an 1873 membership list for the Blue Ridge Baptist Church in Grandview. In 1880 they are living with their widowed daughter, Julia BATEMAN, and her children in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., Texas. Alexander stated that both his parents were born in Virginia. Elizabeth states in her Texas Confederate Widows Pension Application that Alexander died in March 1884 but no record of his death or burial has been found.

There is some question if he or his father lived on a reservation in Oklahoma. I know I am Cherokee Indian but how much is to be examined. I have seen the 1910 census for my grandfather Bert that says he was born in Oklahoma but that is all I know. Since Oklahoma has no records of his birth I can't be sure what to think. I hope this mystery is to be found. If only I could get a copy of his birth records the mystery would probably be solved... barb kleiva (slone)

My GGGrandpa Owen m. Mary Neal worked for her father, Hezekiah Neal and later married her. My GGrandmother Rachel Louise(Lou) was their daughter. There were 3 sons, I believe. After Mary Neal's death, he married Mary Scott. They had some children, also. Owen is buried between Mary Neal and Mary Scott in the Franklin Cemetery in Purchase Ridge in Scott Co. We'll see what we can put together. I do know quite a bit about Purchase Ridge in Scott Co. I grew up there, but have lived in Kingsport for 47 years.

Who is your biggest MYSTERY ANCESTOR? Jesse Hall b. 1825
Comments:
I have been trying to find the parents and/or siblings of Jesse Hall for many years. He was born in Logan Co., Kentucky, the censuses indicate that his father was born in Virginia. He first married Margaret Fleming in Mulenberg Co., Ky in 1849 - She died in 1850. He then married Mahala Knight in Butler Co., Kentucky and they had children named the following: Alexander; Netter; Mary; William S.; Sarah P.; Ann Elizabeth; Jesse E.(female); Joseph E.; Dora Dean; Mahalie J.; and Henry J. Hall.

I haven't been able to find anything that links him to another Hall living in that area. Any suggestions? Thanks!
