I don't have much info except my father(deceased) was Eduardo Pucci one of the children of Richcard Pucci and (Ithought my grandmothers first name was Luisa) Sicilia. My father was a shoemaker as was his father. Brothers, Baldo and Frank and sisters Mary, Louise and Viola. I am sure that the Richard Pucci in this data is my grandfather which I find very exciting. It waswonderful to see. Thank you

In my late uncle's effects I have found a brass tag stamped "16500(37) CATT VULNERA ATTILI DI LEONARDO E RUFFOLO GIOVANNINA OL 1920 MARANO M. COSENZA" My uncle was in the RAF in WW2, so I think it must date from then. I put the deatails into a Google search and found similar names on this site.
If this belonged to anyone's ancestor or relative, contact me and I will send it to them.

My great-grandfather was Joseph Montemurro and he was the oldest of the three brothers who founded Montemurro Brothers (later Golden Bell) Dairy. Leonard (not Michael, as you have it) and Thomas were the others, but my great-grandfather went back to Italy to visit around the end of WWII and died there. Leonard and Tom continued the business and Leonard was the first President of the Italian American Club. Uncle Tom was either the first of one of the first Italians elected alderman. Leonard died in the 30s, I believe and Tom eventually sold the dairy around 1960, to Langrens, I think.

Thanks for this very interesting history, none of my 4 Italian great-grandparents came from Marano Marchesato, but all were from Calabria and I recognize a lot of names. I was born in Kenosha in 1957 and lived there until 1970.

Carolina Spizzirri is my great-grandmother. I believe she was born in Marano Marchesato about 1857. She immigrated to the US in 1897 and married Fortunato Carfagno in July, 1897 in Chicago. On her death certificate, it lists her parents as Nella Spizzirri and Teresa Cecilia. Via your website, I have found an Emmanuele Spizzirri married to a Teresa Sicilia, who had a daughter Anna in 1851. I believe Carolina was their daughter also. Does anyone have any information about any of them? My grandmother Carolina had two illegitimate daughters, also supposedly born in Marano Marchesato: Concetta, born in 1886 and Raffaela in 1891. Does anyone have an info about them? Raffaela is my grandmother. I don't know when she immigrated to the US, but she married my grandfather, Costantino Juliano from Montella, in Chicago in 1909. Concetta married Frank Perri and lived in Chicago. The two girls did not immigrate with their mother in 1897. They were left behind with relatives, and came to the US at some later date. This website has been very interesting to me - thanks so much and thanks to anyone who can help me!

I'm the family genealogist. My daughter wanted me to help her surprise her boyfriend's family w/some family history. The family lives in the Chicago area & runs a 4th generation family produce business in Chicago. I believe I've located the founder of the business emigrating in 1905 from Marano Marchesato in 1905, 14 year old Eugenio Ruffolo & father, Pasquale, age 40. Pasquale also found in records for 1902 & 1911, plus the 1905 manifest mentions 1898.

Greetings

I am the senior editor for www.italianvisits.com which is a rapidly growing resource for English-speaking people with an interest in all things Italy. Please feel free to click on any region (right side) then on any of the cities and towns we have written about and photographed.

We have just created a page called “Connectionsö where we would like to develop a list of appropriate links to other Italian websites. We hope you may be interested in exchanging links with us. If so, please contact us at your convenience. If you add a link to ItalianVisits, please use the URL: http://www.italianvisits.com

There are two other matters we would like to discuss with you:

1) We are attempting to create pages for cities, towns and villages in every Region of Italy. We have over 150 on our site now and we are developing new pages every month. We usually work with the Mayors (Sindacos) and their fellow counselors to arrange a visit during which we collect information about the place and photograph it extensively. There is a small fee to cover our, and in some cases, these pages are sponsored by friends of the town. We would certainly like to know if we have written about the city of town of your ancestors.

2) If you know any people whose ancestors are Calabrian, please tell them about the “Come Home Calabria 2007ö project we are working very hard to organize. It is our hope that Calabrese all over the world will plan a trip “homeö during the summer of 2007. We have created two online presentations, one in English and one in Italian.

English: http://www.italianvisits.com/calabria/2007
Italian: http://www.italianvisits.com/calabria/2007/presento

We look forward to cross linking with you at the earliest opportunity.

Sincerely
Vian Andrews

Our oldest tradition we follow in Brazil till today is the scaliddi - I might change a little the recipes you have posted, but basically is the same. We 'built'a little scala with the pasta, fry it and 'dive' at hot honey. It must be done with the hands (prohibited using machinery, one who makes cannot eat and at Christmas' time, families visit families offering as gift to friends, the own best energies made by hands, like a 'sweet scala' to the other family succeeding and health.
Our Family do it in Brazil every year, last 160 years, and Thanks God - this scaliddi times are coming!
Cheers
MArcio

We hang on to our traditions in our home from all the traditional foods to language...even my 2 year old son speaks Italian.
I have heard so many of the last names..Spizziri, Conforti, Vivacqua etc. because I grew up listening to all the stories my Mom would tell me about life in Marano. Thanks bunches

I read lots of the comments, asking about relatives who lived "north of Chicago." I recognized many, many names, and I have photos of many of the "missing" relatives...they were friends and relatives of my family in Kenosha and Racine, Wisconsin. I'm from Kenosha, and I live in the middle of "Little Marano Machesat," as we call my neighborhood. I'll bet the Calabrese churches in this area, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and Mount Carmel among them, hold lots of records of the people who came from this area. Come to Kenosha, Wisconsin and meet your relatives!!! Oh, and I found some in Guelph, Ontario, this summer as well, talking (myself in Italian, she speaking "The Dialect") with a very old lady who knew all sorts of interesting things, who came to Canada from Marano Marchesato. I'm glad I found this site, and do come to Kenosha ("Ka-nosh", as we Marchesati call it!)

I have noticed that on the web site for the Marenesi, many of them have some sort of connection to Rende,Italy. Although my family research is Rende, I have expanded to include the nearby villages.

I am researching the following names; Basile, Chiapetta/Chiappetta, DeBartolo, DeRango, Rende, Verre and Volpentesta. These are the names I'm working on now. If any one recognizes these names, would you please contact me. I am willing to share what little information I have.

Thanks,

I have come back and forth to your site for new and interesting information. I noticed that you have my great uncle Pietro Micel born 1 Dec 1889, parents Gaetano and Maria Belmonte, on the 1889 Birth Records Index. This has helped me a great deal. I now can order the correct film number. The census record from Italy shows him born on 1 Oct 1889 so I am in the process of verifying which is the true birth event. I need to know his whereabouts in 1917 as he arrived in the US in 1907 and supposedly returned to Marano in 1917 and died soon after from the flu epidemic. I need proof. I have his immigration papers but have no record of him returning, no death record. Finding this information would help in putting the pieces of the puzzle together. If anyone out there knows anything about Pietro Miceli, please contact me as soon as you can.

Thanks for all the Help!! I'm putting a here an updated information.

Remember, in Italy, past and even today, The wife does not take the name last name of the husband. The wife keeps her last name.

Antonio De Rango (1788-1858) married Teresia Ajello and had son Carmine.
Carmine De Rango (1837-?) married Gelsomina Costabile (daugther of Gioacchino Costabile and Aquila De Luca).
Children of Carmine DeRango:
Nunziata Giuseppe (1858), Silvestro, Alessandro(1870-1951), Vicenzia, Leopaldo (1859)married Rosina Vena, Emilia(1877), Michelina (1875-1960 married Sarerio Aiello, Rosaria (1879), Giovannia (1880), Raffaele (1862), Ortenzina(1872).

Alessandro went to North America.
Another brother went to South America.
Eventually a relative came to North America and once Alessandro took his daughter to visit them in Blue Island, Illinois.
Its unknown where his other brothers and sisters went to.

OK, I'll post more as I get it.
Please, this is a collaboration effort, if you may have some pieces to the puzzle, please feel free to contact me.
Thanks much for your help.

Alessondro DeRango from Calabria would have arrived in US in the early 1900s or late 1800s. He married after arriving in the US and settled outside the Chicago area (Dalzell Illinois). He had several children, Frank, Ralph, Louis, Joesphine, Tommy, and others. One child died early when a coal truck accidently backed into him trapping him against a building.

I'm searching for the rest of the puzzle, and eargly looking for who Alessondro, otherwise known as Alex, was and who was the rest of his family (brothers, sisters, children).

Alessondro had a son Louis, who married Flora May O'Dille.

Does anyone have some of the missing puzzle pieces?
Thanks, Best Wishes.

Joseph Pellicore brought his nephew, or my grandfather, Luigi Dominick Cariato, to Chicago from Cosenza in 1908. I attended St. Bonaventure kindergarden in 1954 and then 1st grade. My mother, Rose, who is named after her aunt Rose Pellicore is the mother of four and grandmother of eight. She remembers playing with her Pellicore cousins on Clybourn. She was a striking blonde and at the time very shy. Although she never finished college she is gifted with a great spirituality and reads voraciously in the sciences although she is nearly 80! We are scattered across the US and have our careers in the sciences for the most part. It is such a blessing to learn more about our Pellicore side of the family. Thank you for being here and great uncle Joseph Pellicore thank you for bring my grandfather here!

I was perusing some of the information, and found very close parallels to the family history I know. My Grandfather Eugene Marano worked on the Trans-Canada Railroad and ended in Tacoma, Washington. In the late Ninteenth and early Twentieth Centuries, Tacoma was a bigger port than Seattle because we had the railroad terminus. The Italian community in Tacoma was fairly large and very close. Some of the names were/are Marzano, Viafore, Romano, Paine, Buffalote.
The community was heavy with males and approximately 1910, one of the older women traveled back to Italy to gather wives. The women were married by proxy and entered through Ellis Island, and one of them was my Grandmother Jeanne. My father is their oldest son, Ralph Frank (Rafael Franko), and I am the youngest of the 13 total children of the first American Generation. We are now into the fourth generation, my cousins are Grandparents.
I lived in the Chicago area in the 1970's and was told I had some relatives "north of Chicago", but I never made an effort to hunt for them.
One of my cousins took Grandma Marano back to Italy in the late 1960's, and we learned at that time we still had relatives there and that our family had been the village bakers.
Is this new information for your researchers?

My great-grandfather, Antonio Esposito, was born in Marano Marchesato to Luigi Esposito and Maria Spizzirri. I know he had at least one brother and one sister. The family probably moved at some time to Mottafollone.

Antonio married Rosa Natalia Golemma who was born in Malvito. They had seven children: Americo (Erma), Luigi (Louis), Millie, Alfred, Mary, Elvira, and Anthony. In the US, they used the name "Spossey". They immigrated to the US between 1904-1907.

My grandfather, Alfred, married Alice Patitucci. Her parents were Vincenzo (James) Patitucci (born in Roggiano Gravina) and Maria Felice Chiappetta. They were married in Roggiano Gravina and immigrated to the US in 1905.

Both families settled in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

Compliments for the optimum job that you are performing.
I'm planning to perform the same job for some more small towns in Italy with two teams:
1) Reading the data in the towns "Anagrafi",by volunteers
2) Through emigrants descendants in their countries, in LSD Family History centers.
Did you previously ask to LSD Centers they agreement for publishing the information you collected ?
I was sure that those information were only for "personal" reason, that means for preparing the pedrigree charts that for religious reason their adepts must prepare....
Thanks

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Italy. His family is from Roggiano-Gravina but we learned that his great-grandfather, Nicola Perrone who married Maria Francesca Petranceli, was originally from Morano.

With a cousin we stopped in the town of Morano which is on the top of a hill and walked up to the church. The church was white with a pink interior. Someone sitting outside retrieved a key so we could go inside.

No one mentioned the difference between Morano Marchesato and Morano Principato so I'm really not sure where we were.

I would really like to be able to do further research but the language difference is a big obstacle for me since I don't speak or read fluent Italian.

You have a wonderful site!

My ggrandfather's mother name was Angela Aiello (or Maria
Angela Aiello)as I told. His father named Giuseppe Chimirri.
My ggrandfather's name was FRANCESCO CHIMIRRI.
After take a look in some certificate we have got,we realized that FRANCESCO had a half-brother (my grandfather
called him "uncle STEFANO").FRANCESCO AND STEFANO were too
close.Uncle Stefano helped my ggranfather on his nephews
education.
Uncle STEFANO's mother name was MARIANNA AIELLO. We think
that probably Giuseppe Chimirri became widow and married
with a relative of Maria Angela (a sister or a cousin, for
example).
Please, if somebody knows anything about this history, don't
hesitate to contact me.
We don't know the "true history", but please, if anyone knows anything, even "not good news", write to me.
Thank you very much.

This site on the web is great. It is great to show my children how thier great-grandparents came to the United States and what was here for them when they got here. This is so neat because now we can share with our children the memories that we have about the stories and people that are only a story to them. Maybe they can now realize the hardships that our ancestors encounterd in they lives just to come here and live. This is really something that can be used in conjuction with all of our old pictures and letters. Thank You for sharing this with all of us.

My husband is John Giorno, son of Francesco Giorno & Petronilla De Rango. I am always looking for something new and when I found this site, I couldn't believe my luck. I managed to find the ancestors of Francesco, I printed it out & my husband has just finished reading it. His dad didn't really know anything about his ancestors, (or can't remember-he's 95 this year) and said to us about 4 hours ago that he would like to find out some more but thought it was impossible. (He doesn't understand computers, & I don't understand Italian). Now you know why this is like fate. Tomorrow we take the info around for him to see. Thank you so much. By the way, they still make their own salami in the garage, (with help) and eat bacala, and the doughnuts with anchovies, or doughnuts with tomato & cheese. They still make all the fried biscuits in wine & honey, dried figs with lemon, tomato sauce for pasta, figs with walnuts inside & honey on top just to name a few. (I also went into your traditions page). Will be visiting again soon.
Barbara.

I am searching for ancestors of my grandparents-in-law Ferdinando Chiappetta (son of Carlo and Arcangiola) and Arcangiola Spizzirri (daughter of Bruno and Filamena) married in Marano M in 1886. Their children were Bruno b. 1887 d. 1918, Carlo b. 1889, Angelina b. 1891, Luigi, b. 1893, Beniamino b. 1895, Anna b. 1898, Salvatore b. 1900, Frank, Teresa (married Peter Aceto, children Gabriel, Mary m. Vincent Chiappetta, & Louis), Maria & Andrea. This info obtained from FHC files. Per 1920 US census I know the oldest 4 brothers lived in Kenosha WI, as well as a brother-in-law Saverio Tenuta. I am seeking info on any of these siblings. 1 brother emigrated to Argentina, but which 1 I don't know.
Also looking for my mother-in-law's ancestors who possibly came from Avellino. Alessandro Rochetto b. 1868 and Archangela Greco b. 1869 were married in Chicago, their 1st 2 children Maria b. 1892 & Louis b. 1896 in Cosenza, the next 8 in Chicago: Martha 1898, Teresa 1900, Joseph 1903, Helen 1904, Paul 1905, Magdalen 1907, Frank 1909 & Albert 1911. Birth dates were confirmed in 1920 census and church records from Maria Incoranata parish. I have traced these siblings & their descendents, but am looking for ancestors of Alessandro & Archangela, as well as their siblings.
Any leads would be greatly appreciated by this Irish person trying to interpret incredible penmanship in Italian records.

My great grandfather's name was Gaetano Santelli - we were always told he was killed in a mining accident, but no one seems to know where or when. My grandmother'smaiden name was Anna Marie Santelli - which matches names in the Marano Marchesato data base.

My grandmother also had a full kitchen in the basement - which was so curious to me. I also rmember she always served us orange slices with olive oil and pepper? My grandmother was raised by her mother Angelina Cercone - and a step father named Angelo Sebastian. They had several children of their own, but my grandmother - we are told - was the only child of Gaetno and Angelina

Do you think it is possible that Gaetano may have married in this country even tho he is shown to have a wife in Italy? or am I barking up the wrong geneological tree? I've been looking so long and with a great deal of unverifiable information - some even completley incorrect?

Anything you could tell me would be appreciated!

I am just beginning to research the ancestry of my grandfather, Umile Ruffolo. He was born February 21, 1913 in Marano Principato and emmigrated to Chicago around the age of 16 and never returned. His brother Umberto later emmigrated to the US after WWII. Their parents were Serafino Ruffolo and Maria Savaglio. Serafino had a brother named Giuseppe. Its almost certain that there is a connection to the earlier generations in your database. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to bridge the gap. I think that my grandmother was born in Italy and my grandfather was born in Kenosha, but I am not sure. My grandmother's parents were Michele DeBartolo and Luisa Molinaro. I am having difficulty finding info, but I am sure that I just have to get into it a little more. Your site it fascinating and very thorough. I am pretty sure that my father's immediate family was from San Sisto, however, it looks like they may have originated from Marano Marchesato. I can't believe I recognise so many of the last names found on this webpage. It amazes me that the Ritacca's, Scola's, and Cosentino's go back to the 18th century.

My great-grandfather (Vincenzo Scarcello) moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada in the early 1900's. He had 4 children, two boys and two girls. I know he had a brother for sure but it was my understanding that he stayed in Italy, and I am not sure about any other family. One of my great aunts went to visit family in Cosenza several years ago and my grandfather was given land which he gave to cousins but I don't personally know anyone in Cosenza. I would be interested to hear from anyone with the Scarcello name, as my knowledge of the Scarcello Family history is based exclusively on those who live in Canada.

My wife's maiden name is Stellato, her mother's is Marchese. They were from Arcavacata (I believe a part of Rende). Family came to Old Italian neighborhood, here in Chicago, from Italy in 1955. We've been back several times to visit family and love it. Wife (Linda) has other relatives living in Kenosha. Have enjoyed looking at your site. Nice job.

Your website is great! Have not found the names of Panetta and Pezzanite or Pezzaniti in amy of you lists. My ancesters on my fathers side were all from Calabria. I believe the Panetta side were from Siderno and the Pezzaniti from San Nicola de Caulonia. My father told us his mother was a Contessa Carmela Panetta Pezzaniti wife of Giuseppe Pezzaniti.(1980-1935 era) I am trying for relatives on the Panetta side as we never knew any of them or their names.Help the 6 sisters ages 74 t0 83 find their roots before we are pushing them up from the ground. I do have relatives from Bianchi, Cosenza, Calabria. They are Thomas Talarico and Rosa Cardamone. Both immigrated to
the U.S. around the turn of the last century. Tom was born in 1876 and Rose was born in 1887 or 1889. He worked in a grocery store once arriving in New York. At some point he went to work for the railroad and eventually migrated to Memphis, Tennessee. My father was born in Illinois when my grandfather worked there for the Illinois Central. My grandparents supposedly married after arriving in the U.S. They had 16 children, four died in childhood. However, I grew up with 12 aunts and uncles and all their children. It was a grand experience. Now, only one aunt and one uncle remain living. They are in Memphis, where most of my family lives. I have a nice photo of my grandmother and grandfather, taken in the 1950's. I have located a cousin in Orange County, California. Her great grandmother was a sister to my grandmother.

Any response from this would be wonderful.

Louise

I believe my grandfather, Charles Chiappetta came from this area. He came to the US in around 1900 at the age of 9. We have his marriage license and the name is spelled CHIAPPETTA on it. My Dad and his brothers and sisters started spelling the name CHAPPETTO when the first one went to school.

My Grandfather came to Chicago and stayed in his late teens or early 20's, he spoke of a sister who moved to Colorado at about the same time, but he never heard from her again.

This is a great site. Thank you for all your hard work.

To Whom it may concern,
I'm a 26 year old female living in Australia, about 2 years ago I visited Cosenza/Marano with my grandparents and mum, I thought it was the most beautiful thing I ever saw. How things back then were so simple but beautiful, the mountains and landscape just unbelivable.

My father was Mariano Spizzirri. He was the son of Leopoldo Spizzirri from Leopoldo's second marriage to Maria (Ignoto). My father had two brothers (Ercole & Francesco) and three sisters (Antoinette, Rosario and Aquila). Ercole remained in Marano until his death about 25 years ago. Francesco migrated to Toronto about 30 years ago. I do not know much about his sisters. Unfortunately, my dad died in 1957 and my contacts with his family has been minimal.
My dad immigrated to this country when WW I ended.

I am in contact with Leopoldo's great granchildren from the line of his first wife. They live in the Chicago area.

I believe that my uncle Ercole had a son, named Mariano
