I just read two messages from Anne/Annie Powell regarding her Cummins relatives from Simon Cummins/James Francis Cummins line. Simon Cummins was my GGGrandfather. James Francis was his #7 child ... my GGrandfather was #10 .. Simon 'Sam' Cummins. He came to New Brunswick with some of his siblings and ended up in Sioux City, Iowa ... and in his old age, Los Angeles, Ca.

If you still check in here ... drop me an email. The one you have listed in your posts doesn't work. Are you still in Idaho? I live in No. Idaho.

Comments:
It has taken me so long to find my Cummins connection and then to get facts about them. Your site has been so helpful Thank You. May I ask if the Purcell papers are available to researchers and if so where? Mary Clare was a daughter of James Cummins and Alice Cullen ( Garret) born in 1832. She was known as Clare during her life she married William Reilly of Castletown Kilberry Co Meath before 1863, had four children Bernard born 1864, Alice b., 1868 Josephine Clare b., 1871 ansd James joseph b 1875. Mary Clare died 16th Jan 1892 her husband died the next day. Josephine Clare also known as Clare all her life came to live with her aunt Pauline Kearney at ballymoon where I accidently found her in the 1901 census she married firstly Patrick Wall of Kilkenny in november 1901, he died in 1905 she then married in 1910 my grandfather Richard Sandys of Roscommon. He was a bank manager they moved around and settled in Dublin. I would love to find out more about James Cummins who his parents were? when he died? according to Griffiths val they had land at Cloghna this is the address given on the Tinryland records of the Baptisms. The tithe applotment books also show a James Cummins living there. Could be the same man. In Carlow library I loked for "Reportorium Novum" for the Cullen line and any other cummins connections but was told they had removed it because it had the Cardinel Cullen's family tree in it !

Comments:
Hello Sue and Linda,

I contacted you sometime last year re my Cummins family. My father, John Cummins, always said he was born in County Carlow but those were the only details I had. His father James Cummins married Eliza Baines (I think his 2nd wife). You very kindly looked up these details but could find no record of my family in County Carlow.

I have just found on the Latter Day Saints website, my grandmother, Eliza Baines, born 14th July 1877 in Ballybromhill County Carlow, her father is listed as Thomas Baines, (who family legend has it was a Major), and mother, Catherine Delany Baines. I believe Catherines father was a Michael Delany and his father was Mathew Delany (or Delaney).

Any chance you could look into this for me, I would be most grateful.

Kind regards

Kathleen

I'm not a Cummins as far as I know, but my families (Longs, Clowrys, Fenlons, etc) were right there with many of these Cummins. In fact, I found my gg-grandmother/father's marriage witnessed by a Cummins (1815 Jany 8, Marrd Joannis Long et Rosa Dowling testis Timotheus Dowling et Honora Cummins). Anyway, great site, if anyone has anything on my family and any possible connections I would be most aprreciative.

Comments:
John was my ggrandfather and I dont have much info fro him. He was in the Army and fought in the Crimean War. The Family story was that he was a survivor of the Charge of the Light Brigade. He served in Bengal. India. In 1868 there is a church record of a marriage between John Cummins and Elizabeth Locke. (He reached the rank of Colour Sergeant) I think Elizabeth was a widow as she had two daughters(Mary b.1864 in Hounslow, England & Eliza b.1867 in Bengal) I don't know Elizabeth's maiden name but she was born in Carlow.
Son John Cymmins was b. 1870 & daughter Clarinda 1873 both in Bengal.

The 1881 England census shaws the all living at 25, West Gore Street, Salford, Manchester where John's occupation is shown as coachman. The 1891 census shows Elizabeth as a widow.
I hope someone out there recognises some of the above and can give me info to take me back further.

I would be interested to know if anyone has information on this family or on the following other family from Tinryland who I have also traced.

George Nicholson b c1795) and Ann Maher (b c1800)

John Byrne/Burns (b c1821) married Mary Dowling (b c1831) 21st Jan 1845

John Byrne/Burns and Mary Ivers (parents of the above.

Hello. I am the daughter of Lois Fenlon Brinkman, daughter of Thomas Bolger Fenlon and Juliet Ludford Fenlon. I inherited a photo album from my Grandparent's home in Pelham, NY, with the business card of Schuyler LeStrade, as well as a formal portrait of Schuyler LeStrade, Louis Lestrade and Harold James Lestrade taken in December of 1896 at the Hargrave Studios on 68 W. 23rd St, New York. What a fascinating website! I have many additional photos in the same album of military planes, many crashed, and also of a track and field meet. They appear to have been taken in the 1910's era. If you would like me to scan any of them, I could do that and send them to you. I look forward to hearing from you.

A quick note to say what a find this website is. I've just found my ancestors James and Mary Cummins on the 1841 and 1851 censuses and thought that would be the end of that but they might be on your site somewhere! James is listed as being from Carlow, Mary from Roscommon. Their children listed so far (born London, the censuses say) are Catherine, Elizabeth, Eliza, James and Thomas. The family story was that Thomas changed his name to Cumming because it was easier to find work with a Scottish name than an Irish name and it seems he did so.

So if you think I've got any cousins who'd like more info, I can happily provide it. I'll let you know if anything else turns up...

Best wishes,

Graham

She was from Dublin and they married in the early 1880's, place unknown. I hope that maybe someone may have more information on him.

Luke Kingsley, b June 1835 Co. Carlow. Immigrated to US fifteen years after famine, naturalized 1861. Oral history claims family name in Ireland was Kinsella, anglisized to Kingsley in US. He worked as farmer in Norwich,CT area. Lived frugally and saved his money for several years, returning to Ireland to bring his father, Lawrence (1811-1866) to Norwich ca. 1863. It was on Lawrence's 140 yr. old gravestone that I found "of Ballyglisheen, Co. Carlow nearly unreadable. I never found it on any map. Is it a village too small to be shown? Thank you for any help you can offer.

Tracing back to earliest Cummins/Cummings in my family that I can document: The birth of my G-grandfatherJohn Cummins June 21 1844-Baptised At St. Pauls Roman Catholic Church in Toronto,Ontario Canada the next day June 22, 1844. Parents listed as Daniel Cummins and Hannah (O'Meara)Cummins. They came to Illinois and bought 40 acres of land in 1847. I followed them through the census up to 1910 and their name is listed as both Cummins and then Cummings in the later Census's. My Mother was Patricia Ann cummings. My Aunt Margaret in her 90's believes Daniel was born in Carlow-but she is not sure.Illinois Census records indicate Daniel was born 1805--1812. John Vincent

This is a long shot, as I'm quite new to he family tree business. My grandmother Elizabeth A. Cummins married my grandfather George Reginald Scales in 1914. Elizabeth was born in 1893 in Liverpool, her parents were John Cummins born 5 August 1870 in Liverpool and Mary Wilkinson born 1869 in Ireland. Johns mother was called Margaret Cummins (I don't think she was married when she had him). Mary's mother was Jane Wilkinson who was born in 1869 in Ireland. I think Co. Wicklow is quite a big place and I'm unsure of the town or area they were from. Can you help me?
I would like to congratulate you on your site, it is one of the finest, clearest and comprehensive sites that I have been on. Well done!

Earliest Known Cummins Ancestor John Sr. Commons(Cummins,Coumans)
Family Emigrated to New Brunswick, in 1819
Comments:
Hello again, The more I read your information, the more I get the feeling that you are all of my family. John Sr. Commons(Cummins, or Cummins) was born about 1795 and was also Catholic. He married Jane Sargeant, of County Cork, who became a catholic to marry him. In January 1819, according to a petition for a land in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, he was married, had been in the provice for 7 years and had one son. I have never found out where in New Brunswick my family lived. I descend from their daughter, Elizabeth Coumans(Commons,Cummins) born and baptised in New Brunswick in May, 1836. Their oldest son was Simon Cummins, born in New Brunswick in 1828, About 1839, the family left for Huron County, Ontario with 5 of their 7 children.Simon Cummins is an unusal name, and John Sr. Cummins named his oldest son this. I feel we may be cousins and have a connection to Johnville. The children born in New Brunswick(somewhere), were Mary, born 1826,Simon, born 1828, John Sr. born 1832, Anne born 1834, Elizabeth born May 1836.The last two children were born in Ontario,Canada. All 7 of their children married Irish born Catholics in Huron and Bruce Counties,Ontario. The last names of their spouses are Inglesby,Farrell, Lawlor, O'Grady, Toohey, Fleming, and Kearney(Carney),Gabe

There are so many of my family names in your registry that we must be related!!I am a Sheridan, but my great grandparents are Coumans. I descend from John Coumans born about 1795 who married Jane Sargeant born about 1800. She was not a Catholic but became one to marry him. They arrived in New Brunswick about 1819. Also, I descend from Timothy P.Sheridan and his wife, Joan Harmon, of County Wicklow, but I think right at the border of County Carlow, near Kiltegan, throught their son Patrick Sheridan born about 1811. Mass used to be said in the 1740 during penal times in the Harmon family home by Father David Byrne,(died 1740). Members of my family married the Farrels, and other names I have seen here. Do get a hold of me. I think we are related. Gabe

Earliest Known Cummins Ancestor Michael Cummings
From Where in County Carlow Carlow and Kilkenny
Family Emigrated to Pa. and Mass. U.S.A.
Comments:
I am researching the family of Michael and Margaret ( Lawler ) Cummings/Cummins. Michael Cummings was born about 1800 and died in Pa. between 1870 and 1880. Margaret Lawler Cummings died at Loan, County Kilkenny March 28, 1865. The children were :
William, birth date and place unknown
Phillip, baptised Nov. 6,1831 in County Kilkenny
Bridget, Baptised June 15, 1834, in County Kilkenny
Judy, Baptised March 5, 1837, in County Kilkenny
Patrick, baptised Aug. 30, 1840 in County Kilkenny
We do not as yet have the marriage date or place for Michael and Margaret Cummings. We think ( at this point ) they may have moved from County Carlow to the Castlecomer area of Kilkenny, but may have been born in County Carlow.
Phillip Cummings, my great grandfather emigrated to the United States about 1847 as did the other brothers and his sister Bridget. Michael Cummings came to the U.S. after the death of his wife in County Kilkenny. If any of what you have matches any of this, I would love to hear from you.
You have a great site here.
