The copy on the Home Page suggests it's only as current as 2003. Have there been developments since? If so, where do we find them? For a new book project, I'm researching the life of a 13 year old girl, born in 1890 and died in 1903, who is buried in a Redondo Beach cemetary. I'm approaching all the standard sources (L.A. County birth/death certs; the cemetary's records; city directories; regional and city newspapers from the period) and several geneology sites but I know there's something I'm missing. Would appreciate any insights if anyone reads this. Name of the deceased: Thelma M. Barnes. Place of rest: Pacific Crest Cemetary. Uncertain, but by extrapolation I presume she was a citizen of Redondo Beach, CA.

hi; I am Bill Kinkel and live in Mpls Mn, I was looking for Paul, Bertha,Wilfred Kinkel and finally found them In Find A Grave. Paul and Bertha are named Kinkel which is correct, but Wilfred is Kinkle, which is also sort of correct. If you could tell me, I know that you take a lot of pictures and can not possibly remember all of them, but I noticed that there is also a Dorothy Kinkle, were these two grave stones together? I did not ever see Paul and family, so I do not know if Wilfred married Dorothy, altho I have a hunch that he did. Dorothy has Mother on the stone, so there must be kids and grand kids around. Please, if posible, send me a message .
Thank you

Our goal is to have current information about each man who served, unfortunately this will involve a lot of Obits from So Cal and other places also. I hope I can use this service in my search.

Looking for a list of inmates who died at [La Casa Mental Health Center 11400 Norwalk Blvd. Norwalk, CA 90650]. It is my understanding that if a body was not claimed it was creamated and buried in a common grave. Was any record made of name, death date, relatives or commiter information? My grandmother [Alice West] died there 1960-1975.

Is there any way someone can help get the information posted on a free site for those people doing genealogy.
I don't have any money, but I would be willing to help look-up and enter the information.

Your site is very well organized.

Suggestion: Look ups - a list of the resources with a link to the person would be easier to track than clicking on each person's name.

I found many links that weren't working. I started keeping track, then there were too many. You many want to do a check of each page.

Thanks again for all of your hard work.

My father's family is from the southern part of California. Mostly around Los Angeles and surrounding communities. It is good to see a site that I can go to for obiturarys in that area. I know there is a magatude of people in a small area. My family goes back to the 1700's. I will leave more feedback as I progress with my research.

Came upon your name and credit in Find A Grave. Will be back here to gain insight from this site. I was looking up Jack Dawn in Find A Grave and you had picture of cemetery there. I plan to do a lot of research on Mr. Dawn and write up a "famous Bio" that will do him justice. He was a family business connection and helped my dad succeed in sales of Chrysler automobiles to the stars in the 30's and 40's. His claim to fame is being a great makeup artist as you may note my addition to his site this day, 2-27-04. Will credit any help your site ends up lending me. Will have it done before the anniversary of his death in June. He just deserves a lot more than he has in the Find A Grave site so far. Thanks again, Gary p.s. have never made extensive contribution before and know that "famous" bio needs to be looked at and okayed before it appears. GK

You are providing a real service. Although it took a little while, I was able to find the information I needed to request an obituary lookup. California is a big state! I was disappointed, though, to find that Altadena has not signed on with you. Fortunately, the Pasadena Public Library did, and that is where I found my info. Thanks for the work you put into this website.

As a transcriber of obituaries for the Bayfield County WI website, I appreciate the need for volunteers to make a site like yours work. I am tracking my father's obit. 27 years after the fact, I realize I do not know where he died, exactly. I do know where he is buried, and the cemetery personnel referred me to Orange County Vital Records. I wish you well on your endeavor. I think there is a special place in heaven for genealogists who go out of their way to help create resources for others to access.

Thanks for posting your web site with ideas for researching obituaries from Southern California. This site is perfect for me because I don't like in California and have found it extremely difficult to get on-line obituaries.

I am interested in early day Merritt family obituaries and cemetery burial locations.

Your site is really good and will be very helpful to many people. I was at the Ventura library just today looking up some obituaries, and decided to look at the Ventura queries board where I spotted your message about this site. I think your list is pretty complete for Ventura County repositories, but you do have some of our towns listed as being in Los Angeles County.....Ojai, Fillmore and Oxnard!! Just a slip, I'm sure, but it could be confusing.
Excellent list of steps to take to locate an obituary, I think. Congratulations on a job well done (or in the process of being done, anyway!!)
Our Ventura County Genealogical Society website has quite a few obituaries indexed so researchers will know where to look, and several of us are working on adding more names as we have the time to search the films at the library. This is a bit of extra help for the researcher, as it will eventually cover all the county papers, giving dates, places, sometimes birth dates or ages, and which papers the obituaries can be found in. If you have a spot to mention this in, it might be interesting to your visitors.

I was at the main Los Angeles City Library to try to find one on my grandmother who was killed crossing the street in the South Bay area in Nov 1940.

I found that there were several newspapers at that time and I had to look at each one to find anything. Found that my grandmother made the news, but I no longer remember which newspaper. I was also trying to find something on her mother who had died in the mid 1930's.

All I can remember is that there were so many newspapers and trying to find something was a mess. I was working at the time and had only a few minutes when I was there.

What a wonderful website to put up. I live in Southern CA. and even when I know where they died, have struck out. One that comes to mind is an individual who died in the 1920's in the County Hospital and was cremated at the U of SC...Try getting that information. I have called and written and "no one": knows who I can go to. Fortunatey I have his death certificate and with your website I have again gained hope.

And folks when they say it isn't easy to acquire an obit in S. CA. they are speaking the truth. I also will have some guidelines for another couple in San Diego.

Hurrah!!!!

Hi!
To your list of libraries that have Southern California newspapers, you might want to add the California State Library in Sacramento. They have microfilm of all the major newspapers in the State, back to the 1800's. I know it's out of the way for most people, but someone looking for Southern Cal obits might live in Northern California or know somebody that does. The big problem with the State library is that it's only open weekdays until 4:00- no evenings or weekends. They have a lot of other information, books, census tapes and records. I know they have a listing of the books in their library at their website, but I'm not aware if it indicates which newspapers they cary on microfilm.

I have no suggestions at this time, but I wanted to congratulate all of you volunteers. All the great work you do for the people looking to piece together their family history. I would not have all the information about my family (both living and ancestors) if volunteers had not helped me with source information and suggestions.
GOOD-ON-YA!!!

Great idea! Obits are always hard to come by and the more sources the better.

This is a great idea, and hope you are successful. I am sure you know that the Orange County Register has some obits online from 1987 on - however, identifying them can be a challenge. I wish other newspapers would follow that example. Anyhow, great work. I am sure it will be helpful to many.

I congratulate you. What a needed and great idea. I live in So. California and have gotten so many requests for obits and have been overwhelmed with the task of figuring out which paper to even start looking for. And my questions of librarians in the libraries surrounding my home area have been less than satisfactory. Again, good luck with your project.

You are offering a wonderful service. If you by any chance intend to include actual obituary searches, I have a few to contribute.

I, like you, do lookups in Kentucky. I can't imagine how difficult it must be in California. You are to be congratulated for producing this site. I think it would be great if a similar site was available in each state. I think it would be a challenge to produce one for my state.

Though I do not need any searching done in California, I
think you have done a marvelous job and commend you on the
work that you do as volunteers.
