Louise and Bushy:
I have been working on the emigrant Walter Cocke line and find conflicting information concerning Henry Cox (born about 1737-1750 in Goochland Co VA, died about 1809 Blount Co TN; married in 1773 Anne Madison).
Some researchers show this Henry as the son of John Cox and Elizabeth /Elce Hix (which is your line Bushy), while others show him instead as the son of a Walter Cocke (see page 228 in Louise R. Cox’s 2001 “Early Cox Familiesö book).
It would be very helpful to me if you two can elaborate on which one you have found to be most accurate. I’m really on the direct path to breaking down a brick wall in my Cox lineage and this point has me baffled.
I greatly appreciate your assistance.

I have found so much about the Coxes from this site. I appreciate it so much. My Grandfather Was Rufus Mynatt Cox, born feb. 25th 1854. Died April 7th, 1929. He married my grandmother Alice Amanda West 1884 in Anderson Cty. Tn. The cemetary Lists his mothers last name as Leach and his father as Harris Cox. They are buried in Highland Memorial Cemetary on Sutherland Ave in Knoxville, Tn. My grandfather must have been the son of James Harrison Cox and Elizabeth Leach.James Harrison Cox Is listed as dying on 2/03/1891. My dads name was Enoch Everett Cox. He said one of his grandparents died on his birthday, 3/02/1891.I wonder which is right. My dad had sisters Nellie, Mayme, Vesta and Eulilia (Doll) Cox. Brothers Walter A and Ted R Cox. My dad is buried in Lynhurst Cemetary in Knoxville. He passed away on Nov. 7, 1975. My mother, Luna VanDeGriff Cox passed away on May 1, 1992. I have 3 brothers, all deceased. The odd thing is, My grandmother, Alice West Descended from Thomas West, (Lord DelaWarr) family that landed in Va. in 1607.It looks amazing if William Coxe was on the same boat. I am 76 years old and have outlived most of my family. My dad would be thrilled. He and his brother went all over Anderson Cty looking for clues. They moved to Knoxville when he was about 6 and my grandfather worked for Southern Railway. My dad also worked in car dept office, and my oldest brother worked 40 yars also. I worked 16 years and retired in 1998. I cannot lave this computer for long. I think the line must go back to John M. and Alice Gammon Cox, then to Curd Cox and Susannah Overton. Then to Henry Cox and Ann Madison. The timeline seems to fit. Curd and Susannah must be buried on Private property. It seems there are a few Cox cemetaries in Anderson Cty. If I can give you any more information or if you can give me more info, please email me. Thank you very much. Rosemary Cox Mixon, Knoxville, Tn

Thanks so much for all the hard work you've put into this very valuable site. I've gleaned so much from it.
I have a question, perhaps you can help me with. I’m the gggggrandaughter of John M. Cox & Alice Gammon. In his will John mentions all his children except my ggggrdandfather William Carroll Cox. Do you have any clue why? I haven't been through all the deeds in Knoxville yet to see if he gave him land before his death.
Also, I have a picture of William Carroll's son Augustus "Gus" Cox b.1872 & his wife Bella Agnes Galbraith b.1880. I have several other photos of his descendants and I'm hoping to get several more this Spring when I return to TN. I currently live in CO.
Thanks so much for your incredible work. It is very much appreciated.
Respectfully, Deb

His father was Thomas Curtis Cox ..who was married to Sophronia Atlanta Mayfield.....I have a picture of them....I am not sure who his parents were....I have noticed a Wm Hugh Cox shown as Thomas Curtis father....however, I think that his father may be Thomas Ellison Cox......and the line going up to Joshua Cox. I would love to learn more.....I have entered people under family tree of Ina Joan Cox. The Mayfield line is researched back a long way. I would like to know where my father fits into the Cox line. Please let me know if I can be of assistance. Thanks,Ina Johnson

Hello, I am attempting to contact Karen Foster-Stout. I am the Great-Great Grandson of Daniel S. Warfield. Charlie Warfield is my Great Grandfather, John D. Warfield is my grandfather, Leroy Warfield is my father. Attached below is an email I have been trying to send. I have further research I want to share. Please be so kind as to help me contact Karen. The email below references Census records and research I want to share. The email link to Karen came back as non-deliverable.Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Hello to everyone!
I am Leroy Warfield's son from Brushy Valley, Tennessee. (John Daniel Warfield was his dad, Charles was his grandfather). I came across this your page at lunch today, and naturally was amazed. I have been doing research on the family history, and found some interesting information. The photo of Daniel Warfield that you have list his middle name as Charles. It was actual "S" for Swomley (this is the Americanized spell, the German spelling is Schwamley or Zwamle). Daniel's mother was German. She married George Warfield who was born 22 December 1792 in Maryland. I am including some electronic files that you may be interested in. I would really like to share some information on this. I have hit a dead end on George (Daniel's dad). Most of the Warfield's from around Maryland were related and trace back to a Richard Warfield who arrived here from Berkshire, England in the 1600's. (Yes, our ancestors have been here that long!)
I have included some Census Documents that I was able to retrieve, and some other information. The file marked Descendants of Richard Betts, list Daniel, his mother, and his father (George). The names of George and Daniel seem to have been passed down through the years. Daniel's father on his mothers side was Johannes Swomley. He was born in Palatinate, Germany in 1727. He married a German widow named Anna Margaretha Becker (born about 1729) in Penn. They had a son, Daniel Swomley who was born about 1760. Daniel in turn married and had a daughter, Sara Swomley, who married George Warfield. They had Daniel Swomley Warfield. Daniel was widowed, and married his second wife, Margaret Lowery. They moved to St. Louis, Missouri and had a large farm. Census records on this list them and their children. Daniel and George are buried in St. Louis at a family graveyard for the Warfield family. There are 8 grave sites listed there. Daniel was a Prisoner of War during the Civil War. He appears to have served with a Sharpshooter Rifle Company. He was eventually released and went back to his family. I have tracked at least one of Daniel and Margaret's daughters to Colorado Springs, Colorado. We have family that lives there as well. I have more information that may help us track back further. Please let me know if you are interested.
Thanks, and good to find you!
John Warfield

I am trying to find out about my CURD family both here in the UK and elsewhere so was fascinated to see reference to the name and then to see a parish church in Hertfordshire England as well! My CURD line seems to originate in Hertfordshire (UK), well back as far as John CURD and Susannah PYMLEY both born about 1750.
That's where I get stuck! There are plenty of other CURD members around the world and I am starting to get involved with DNA testing as a way of linking them together.
It would be good to get a link to all this US history from the Hertfordshire UK CURD line..
All the best

My main interest has been the Berry family; however, I "inherited" a large group of old photos that most likely are Cox children(most likely a brother to Amanda). My ggrandfather was George Berry married to Amanda Cox. As far as I know, they lived in Powell Co., KY but some of both families migrated to Missouri. Many pictures are to "Uncle George and Aunt Amanda". I believe their deaths were in the early 1900's.
If this may be in anyone's line, I certainly would be happy to let you have the old photos since I just don't have the interest to dig any farther.

My guess is that the widowed Auda & the widowed Cordia married late in life.
Any thoughts?

You could probably help me. I am at such a dead end and am working by myself. My father was Richard Richardson Cox. His father was Henry Thomas Cox. His father was Edward Henry Cox (born in Cumberland County, VA in 1873) and he married a Crump who's father was a founding father of Virginia and whose mother was a Huguenot). Now the kicker is HIS father was Albert Henry Cox - born in Buckingham County in 1811 (or so says his son Edward's death Certificate) who married Elizabeth Ann F. Amos of Cumberland in 1844.
I can't find Albert Henry Cox anywhere!
Name: Elizabeth Baier <housecat40@hotmail.com> Date: 2007-01-04 Comments:
Very interesting and informative! I too have a "missing" Henry Cox - he disappears from Cumberland County VA ca. 1770. I know who his parents are, but don't know anything of his wife or descendants. I have been researching for years Martha Cox, the wife of Thomas Walton (Sr.) of VA. Have proof that she is the only daughter of George Cox d. 1728 in Goochland VA (George being a son of Bartholomew Cox d. 1731 Goochland CO Va). The widow of George d. 1728 (Martha ____) after George's death married before 1741 to #2 Isaac Hughes (who died 1758 Cumberland VA) and the widow Martha (now Hughes) left her will in 1770 Cumberland Co. Va. In her will, she names her 3 children, Martha Walton, George Cox and Henry Cox . . . I have found a 400 acre land patent issued to George Cox & Martha Cox in 1733 in Goochland; that land was sold in 1741 by Martha now Walton, her husband Thomas Walton and George Cox. About the same time, in Goochland County ca. 1731-33, land patents were also placed by (I believe) her brothers, Henry and George; these lands all adjoined and butted against the lands of Bartholomew, dec'd. Was wondering if your Henry could be the same Henry as the brother of my Martha (nee Cox)Walton? the land in these patents are located in the present day Powhatan County VA - which separated in 1771 from Cumberland VA . . . not 5 miles from the present day Cumberland County border. I have not found much mention of Henry and George in Cumberland VA after the will of their mother,Martha Hughes, when Henry as Executor of the Estate of his mother, Martha Hughes, sold her land; the brothers seem to "disappear". If the these 3 children had to be 21 to place a land patent, then they were all 21 by 1731-33! I know from their father's will in 1727/8 that they were all minors at that time. I believe the Matthew Cox you mentioned in the articles at this website may be a son of William Cox of Essex Co. VA who died in 1754 Essex and left a will in Book 9 p. 291-5. He had sons: William who married Margaret ____,: Henry who married Ann ___; Matthew, deceased who married I believe Mary & had at least 1 daughter, Martha. The widowed, Mary, married #2 Richard Hodges; he also mentions daughters: Sarah Bowcock; Frances, wife of John Gatewood; daugther Mary, wife of James Pryor. The Executor of this will was Henry Cox, son of the testator; witnesses were Samuel, Marthew & William Allen and Edward Ball.

Great site, I'm glad I found it. I'm researching my line, which is from Haran County, Ky. My grandfather was Clarence Cox, Sr. who married Polly Middleton, and his father was Charles Wesley (Charlie) Cox, who married Rosa Hendrickson. I've come to a brick wall with Charlie, and if anyone sees this and has any information, please drop me an email at anotherticket81@yahoo.com - thanks so much!

Stumbled across your wonderful site today...found lots of interesting things. I am searching for any information about the COX family in Missouri. I have very minimal information about my paternal grandfather which is as far back as I can go. I know he worked as a telegrapher for the railroad. I know he had at least 7 wives, my grandmother (Hilda Schuke-deceased) was the 7th. His name was Raymond Lee Cox-deceased. I know that he had 2 children with my grandmother. They are Michael Lee Cox born 8/25/1952 and a younger brother Patrick Lee Cox 1954?. Patrick is deceased. My father tells me that he was born in Desoto, MO, and grew up in Bismark, MO. I don't know the whole story, but I know that Raymond spent a lot of time away from home. I am not sure at what point in his marriage to my grandmother, but they were divorced and she remarried a man with the last name Wygant. At the age of 6 my father was told that Raymond was found stabbed in St. Louis. He was buried by his first wife (unknown) in a private cemetary in Advance, MO. I do not know the location of this private cemetary nor the name of it. My father's brother Patrick had 3 children. Two sons, one Jason, the other ?, and one daughter Tina. Tina's mother's name is Paula. I do have contact with Tina and her mother, but they only have limited information as well. My father, Michael Lee Cox married Charlene Anne Courtois of Perryville, MO. They had 6 children. Francis Michael, Nicholas Raymond, Beatrice Anne, Alexander Charles, Theodore Vincent, and Deborah Ruth. Michael and Charlene currently live in St. James, MO, and all of their children live St. James and Rolla, MO. All are still living. 4 of the children are married, 3 of which have children of their own. I would like to know more about my grandfather. My father believes that he is the only living child of Raymond Lee Cox. If anyone has any information, please contact me. Thank you very much, Bea (Cox) Bonebrake, Rolla, MO, Phelps County

Hello,Goins cousins,I discovered a newspaper article in my Greatgrandmothers family Bible. Her name was Elizabeth Wheeler but her Mother's name was Elizabeth Smallwood and Elizabeth Smallwoods Dad was a ? Smallwood who married an Eliza, don't know her last name. In this bible I found an article about a Aunt Prudy Goins who was celebrating her 106th birthday and whose Dad is listed as Richard Cox who lived to be 105 and her Grandfather who lived in Princton died at age 110 and her Mother in Princeton died at 95. It also stated Prudy was born near Knoxville, Tenn. In 1841 Prudy married Preston Lee Goins and they had 9 children. There is more information listing names of grandchildren and great-grandchildren living in the Kansas City area. In both sets of grandchildren mention a Sylvia Smallwood and Willis Smallwoods names were listed so I figure I might be related to you all. I live in Leavenworth, Kansas and would be glad to send or E-mail you a copy of the article. My home phone # is 913-727-1627 and just ask for Sally.

Also, I have a question about Nancy and Samuel Cox, children of Ann Madison and Henry Cox. Their birth dates are after Henry died. Could this be a typo?

The Cox's were in Edgefield Co., SC in the late 1700s and moved to Wilkinson and Amite Co., MS about 1810. No one has been able to find out who the father of David, Henry, and James. My wife Carol and I recently purchased an antebellum home in Beech Island, Aiken Co, S.C. It was built in 1826 by Caroline and Wade Glover. If I have this right, she was formerly Caroline Cox(born about 1810 and daughter of Clem Cox) one of your ancestors. We have researched the house and family history and have located Wade's grave in the Glover cemetery, but did not see hers. Is she buried somewhere else? I don't think the Caroline Cox buried at Millbrook Church is her because she was born much later than 1810. If it's not to much trouble, please send me an E-mail with any additional info. you might have. Thanks.

delighted to find your site: my ancestor is John Cox b. 1754 in West Jersey; loyalist in American Revolution; came to Canada in 1783 with the Loyalist emigration. Would love to find out a connection with our American cousins on your side of the border concerning pre-revolutionary times. We have his life well documented after 1777, especially 10 of his 13 children and his wife, Sarah. John & Sarah were early settlers of our province's capital city, Fredericton. Both they and the last 10 of their children died and are buried here in New Brunswick,Canada. We would love to be able to find out if there was a first marriage, perhaps pre-war time and maybe 3 children born to that union. My sister and I have written a 301p. indexed book on John & Sarah Cox and their descendents and are in the process of completing an updated CD Version. Again, nice to talk with you - S.R.D.

Found your site while surfing..It seems to be very informative but a bit hard to read with the dark background you are using. I am looking for members of the Cox family from the Clarke Co. MS area. My dad was L.W. Cox b. 07/11/1908, d. 06/20/1969. His dad was H.S. Cox b. 01/13/1884, d. 08/27/1941. The family lived in a little community called "Wautubee" which is just south of Enterprise and Meridian, MS. Other families associated with the Cox family includes the Everetts, the Kidds, the Watsons, the Lawsons and the Bakers. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

My 4th or 5th grandfather was John Cox married to Susannah Groom. I was wondering if the gentleman that supplied this picture has more info on John. Naturally I would love to know if this is our John Cox. Your web site is great.

Jennie was born in the 1800's and died at approx 98 years old sometime in the 1950's-1960's. Some of their children were Marcia, Mote, Leanne, and Hazel. There were 8 to 10 children. Not sure if that includes the twins that died at birth. Do you think that there's any connection here to your family?
