My Grandpa on my mom's side was Victor Charles Fortino and my Grandma was Sarah Katherine Falsetta. My mom is Margaret Fortino Travis. Her siblings are James Fortino, Victoria Sova, Mary Krapohl, and Victor Charles Fortino II. My Great Great Grandparents were from Sant'ippolito. On my Grandpa's side: Paul Fortino and Julia Fabiano. On my Grandma's side: Paul Falsetta and Rose Cavello. I'm not sure exactly when my great grandparents came to America, but I think it was during the early 1900's. My Grandpa's parents originally settled in Pontiac, Michigan and my Grandma's parents, in Grand Ledge (before they moved to Lansing in the early 1940's). I have never been to Bunker Hill before but I'm hoping to go next summer- it looks like a great time!

My grandfather, Natale Ferro, was raised in Borgo Partenope, near Santo Ippolito and came to this country, with three brothers, settling in Hudson, Michigan. He moved to Elkhart, Indiana around 1930.
My wife and I visited Borgo Partenope and met many cousins for the first time last September. While there, my cousin Natale Lucanto-Borzino took us to Santo Ippolito (which can be seen from the balcony of his house in Borgo Partenope) where we met a gentleman who has custody of the birth and death records. His name was Maurizio Nardi, but I don't have his address. He was going to look up the family records and send information to me but I have not heard from him. Does anyone have a mailing address for the records in Santo Ippolito? It was in a building with medical facilities, but it was raining hard the day we were there and I didn't get the name or address at the time.
Thanks for any help.

My gr-gr-gr-gr grandmother was Angiola Caruso who married Antonio Serratore they born ca 1774. I know of Caruso's in Dowagiac, Michigan, so I started searching, and ended up with your website. Then I started reading your guestbook, an came across some Marizatas. I am looking right now at an old picture of Frank Marazita taken circa 1917 in Niles, Michigan with my gr uncle. The story my grandfather and father always told me was that when Frank came to Niles, he stayed with my grandparents until his wife and soncame from Italy. In fact I went to school with the Marizta kids. When I stared looking I did not expect to find any relationship to the Marizata and Carusos, except I knew that Frank's son Joe married a Caruso from Dowagiac. Do you have any light about the old, old Carusos? This world is getting smalled and smaller all the time.
Thanks, Shirley

Hi,
I am so happy to find this!
My Grandpa was George Spagnuolo. He supplied the Gellato that was to die for! He owned Spagnuolo Candy and Ice Cream Store. He was from reading I didn't know this, but one of the Original Founders of this event!
Kewl Beanz!
It was so fun to go to Bunker Hill as we refered to it.
The Fireworks, the other cousins, the dancing..
The Gellato..
Oh I mentioned that already!
It was a definite highlight of our Summer.
My Mom Mary (Moody)
Has went since I moved away 15 years ago to Florida.
I am hoping to be able to touch base with other cousins that I have not spoken to in so many years.
I hope to bring my husband to it next year.
HE will have a blast!
Thanks for this site and guestbook!
Blissings!

Grandfather was Antonio Fortino, who was born in Sant' Ippolito in 1897. Came to Lansing,MI as a teen with two younger brothers, Pasquale and Frank.
He married Marietta Coscarelli, who was from Cosenza.
Remember going to Bunker Hill back in the mid to late 1970's as a kid. Remember seeing cousins and the sight of busses rolling in from Toronto and all the Canadian kids playing soccer. That was before soccer was popular in the US!
Hope to take my family to Bunker Hill in the coming years.
Visited Cosenza and Borgo Partenope in 1995 to vist my Cousins on my grandmother's side (Coscarelli). You could look from Borgo Partenope and see Sant'Ippolito in the distance. Beautiful view.

Both sides of my family immigrated to America from Saint Ippolito. My paternal grandparents are Carmelo and Rosina (Cascarella) Spadafore, of Pontiac and my maternal grandparents are Giuseppe and Marietta (Spagnuolo) Filice of Lansing. My parents, Paul and Eleanor (Filice) Spadafore were both born there. I recognize many names from your guestbook and have enjoyed reading the comments. My family attends and enjoys the feast in Bunkerhill every year. I have always been interested in my heritage, the traditions and the recipes! The history of the village of Saint Ippolito has always fascinated me; my grandparents shared many stories of the "Old Country" with me. The most memorable story being the great earthquake which destroyed the village. Several years ago I found a book in an antique store. It was written in 1909 and titled "Italy's Great Horror of Earthquake and Tidal Wave". It relates the story of an earthquake which struck southern Italy and Sicily in the early dawn hours of December 28th, 1908. I can find no reference to Saint Ippolito directly but it does say that "no part of Calabria escaped destruction" and "...Cosenza...and all other towns bordering on the straits were swept into ruin." Could this be the earthquake credited with the destruction and renaming of the village? Does anyone have more detailed info of the earthquake of our history? I would love to learn more!

As a child I have always wanted to have a big family. One of my big wishes was to have a huge family reunion, with family getting together to play games, feast on foods and share memories of years past. My dad calles me to day and says that there is a place called Bunker hill where they hold a festival called Sant Ippolito. He told me "Here is your family reunion that you wanted." Iam so excited to finally here and be a part of this. The whole side of my Fata family had no idea that this festival has been going on. But you can be sure that we will be there from here on out! look foward to meeting new people and family!!!! :)
Iam sure that we will update here with new information, however I will leave that up to my father whom is very involved with the family tree. :)

My Grandfather George Spagnuolo was one of the origial founders of the Saint Ippolito Festival that takes place in Bunker Hill, MI each year and I attended with my family from the time I was born.
We would get together with all of our family, my grand parents had 38 grand childern, and we would set up the pickinic tables for the great all day feasting on pasta, fried chicken, bread, salads, and great deserts.
It was a place of great joy to me as a child. Before there was mobile refrigeration they kept the pop in in large tubs filled with blocks of ice and water and ice cream was kept cold with dry ice. My cousins and me would get the dry ice and go to a small pond in the back and fill it with the ice to see it steam and bubble. We probably froze a few frogs but we were kids. The pond is no longer there if you look for it.
One of our favorite things to do was to visit the cemetery accross the street and look at all of the old grave markers it was kind of spooky and exciting we would also sneak a couple of cigarets there when we were older, thought we were hot stuff in those days.
One of my cousins was a little more adventurous and we used to sneak into the church and he would ring the church bells every year and we would run for our lives.
As kids we loved the games and would enter with our cousins to win all the prizes from the three legged race, sack race, pie eating contest and musical chairs.
I remember all the older Italian men sitting at an outdoor table playing poker for big money and us kids would scour the grownd below in case someone was careless enough to drop any money (never did happen). The cops broke up the game one year and they never played anymore, ): .
It was also exciting to watch the procession with the statue of Saint Ippolito and see all the money that was pinned on it. I think they gave it to the church to support a local orphanage but I'm not sure.
My cousins and me also used to get in an old school bus on the property and pretend we were driving down the road it was all great fun. It is amazing how simple things can give such great pleasure.
When all the eating was done they used to have a band come in with an accordian and play favorite Italian music and polkas, everybody danced, it was great.
But they always saved the best for last and we could hardly wait for the evening and the fireworks. We watched the fireworks company build the fireworks displays in great anticipation of the exciting finality of the day and we were never disapointed as the displays were lit and and the rockets raced and chased each other from post to post spinning almost out of control with loud whistles and splashes of color and light. Then they would set off the arial shells that exploded into wonderous colors of light and sound and at the very end they would light up the American flag in one final salute and we new our day of adventure was over until next year.
I have only been back to the festival twice in the last 18 years since we moved to Florida and every year in August I think of the second Sunday and my heart pulls me back to a small country church and Italian festival in Bunker Hill, Michigan. Hope to get get back one day soon.

My father was born in Santo Ippolito and so was I. Some years ago my parents (who are now with God) had the opportunity to go there and I met many relatives and saw the house where I was born and my family's ancestral home where my father and his siblings were born and grew up. It was a wonderful trip and I am so glad we went there before too much had changed. My Uncle Paul still made wine with grapes from the family vineyard. He got figs and olives from the family orchard. He owned a donkey and had chickens. My grandmother was still alive. I met many cousins. There was still no indoor plumbing although, thank God, my one cousin with whom we stayed did have something of a toilet. All water had to be carried from a well in the center of town.

I was recently at family wedding in the Chicago area and a cousin told me he was invited to a Tricoci family reunion. When he got there he did not know anyone. When I did an enternet search, I found all the Tricocis were from Sonto Ippolito. Many of their spoases had name I new from growing up in Lansing, MI.
From looking at the Family trees, I believe, I'm a decendent of Vicenzo Tricoci (1863) son of Rafeale and Giuseppina. He does not show any other info because as a young man he married a DeRose and moved to San Palo, Brazil where he died in 1906. His wife moved back to Cosenza area Montalto Uffugo. From there our family took three paths to North America, Toronto, Chicago and my father's family to Lansing.
I was born in Montalto Uffugo, and arrived in Lansing in 1960, at the age of seven.
I was pleased to find this site and am anxious to learn more about my relative from Santo Ippolito. Chao!

If fou wish i can give you all their descendancy down here.
Bye and thank u very much

I think you've done a tremendous amount of work on this site!---My information so far begins with my paternal side with my great grandparents Francesco & Caterina (Fazzolari)Panetta--One of children was Samuel,my grandfather. My father, Frank Anthony Panetta, was born in Gerace Marina,Reggio Calabria 5-20-1903. His mother was Francesca D'Agostino from the same area. Her grandparents (my great great grandparents)were Domenico & Paula (Valenti) Valente. Their daughter Theresa married Pasquale D'Agostino(my great grandparents)and my grandmother Francesca was their first child. On my maternal side my Grandparents were both from the Cosenza,St.Ippolito area. My great great grandparents here were Pietro & Katerina (Cozzo)Spadafore.Their daughter Maria married Gaetano Rocchetti (my great grandparents) and my grandfather Charles was one of their children. He married Michelina Anne LaMacchia on Palm Sunday April 14,1912 in Cosenza. Her Parents were Vincenzo & Serafina (Coscarelli) LaMacchia. My mother Elizabeth Virginia Rocchetti was their first child (of 13).

First of all I want to thank all the people that worked on the research and outcome of this website.
Its nice to see that generations have not swept away that "need" to research our origins.....our roots.
I must say that the information on the town of Sant'Ippolito is quite accurate.
Ive been living in the States for the past 5 years (came from S.Ippolito)...I think its time to consider a little trip back to the old country... Keep up the good work!

I came upon this website by accident! I can't eveb imagine the time invested in this. I took a early retirement from the state in October of 2002 and have been meaning to start looking for info on past family history to find most of it already accumulated. Called my mother and she informs me my brother Michael already mentioned it to her. He lives in Lansing and manages " Caruso's" there at the mall.Nobody told me! It's great. I noticed when I clicked onto my paternal grandmother's info , there were no parents listed .Emilia Spagnuolo Caruso born in Cosenza (06/01/1893) was the daughter of Michele Spagnuolo and Maria Tricocci. She came here at the age of 8 with her older brother Paul Spagnuolo who later returned to Italy. She told me she never understood how her mother could put her on a boat to never see her again. My mother was born in S. Ippolita in Dec (23 rd) 1920.She is the daughter of Assuntina and John Spagnuolo who died in '67 and '69.You have done such a wonderful job. Eventualy I would like to try to obtain my mothers church birth record, if possible. I'll check that part of your website later. Thank you so much.Several times in the last few years my daughters have had to do a family history and every time I have had to "explain" why there are so many "Spag's" for surnames ?

i think my ancestors were from S.I. my grandfather told me they were from a small town outside of cosenza. some of the names in my heritage are derose, coscarella, and of course bonofiglio. i cannot seem to find any records of them from italy though.
