Randy,
I noticed that the surname "Kraemer" was not on your list of surnames for Kassel. According to the Glueckstal birth, death and marriage records that are on the web (http://www.odessa3.org/collections/stpete/gluc/link/glueckbm.txt) over the years there were a number of Kraemers listed as residing at Cassel or Kassel, including my great grandfather's family, Jakob Kraemer, and his father Johan Peter Kraemer and his father Georg Adam Kraemer (sometimes listed as just Adam Kraemer) before him. Georg Adam Kraemer is supposed to have been born in 1801 in Bretzfeld, Germany which was/is located in Wurttemberg. I have not yet been able to determine who his parents were who originally immigrated to Russia.
Jakob Kraemer settled in McIntosh County near Ashley in 1889. At some point Jakob Kraemer changed his name to Jacob Kremer but I don't know if it was before he got to America or after. Most of the family later moved to Linton, ND where my mother was born. They were members of the First Baptist Church there in Linton.
There is a picture from around 1888 of Jacob and his cousin Jacob standing in their Russian military uniforms toward the bottom of the article at this web page: http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/grhc/history_culture/history/iseminger.html
If you have reason to believe that the Kraemers were not at Kassel I would appreciate any information you have.
Thank you

I was so thrilled to find this website. My family came from German a little town called Kassel. The imagrated to Russia and named their new town, Kassel. When I was a child, my grandma told me, the Queen of Russia was German and gave land to any Germans who wanted to come live in Russia. Now that I have been researching I have found more info about why the family went to live in Russia. One fact I was surprised to read, that Kassel/Kamarovka is in the Ukraine, what a surprise that was.
I am going to Germany and St. Pertersburg in July. I am so excited to set foot on land my ancestors lived. I know I will be far from Kassel in the Ukraine, but I will be the closest any of my family has been able to get to their home places from their last home country, The USA.
Thank you again for this wonderful website.
Sincerely,
Denise Meyer
