Three brothers, James, Robert & John Gaw were born in Eniskillen and immigrated, leaving behind a father and a sister. Their mother's maiden name was presumably Sarah Miles, their father's name unknown. James ended up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Robert and John in Woodstock, Virginia. Robert stayed in Virginia, but John (my ancestor) emigrated to Missouri in 1818. He died in 1822. He was married to Catharine Bowe in 1788 & had 6 children. When Catharine died, he married Mary Miller in 1805 and had 8 more children. Please contact me if you have any information on any Gaws in Eniskillen.

Thanks to the huge list of baptisms on your website I found my ggGRandmother's name, 3 of their children for whom I didn't have names and an understanding of the neighbourhood in Fermanagh that they recreated in Canada - the area around Farrancassidy Cross Road on the Garrison-Beleek Road including Killymore and Fassagh. My gggGrandparents I believe were John Rogers and Mary Duncan of Tassow (Fassagh). I have at least one or two generations of the descendants of all these families (including the results of the work of a Brock family
genealogist). I look forward to working out more of the earlier generations of the Rodgers in County Fermanagh.
Question: What source could I quote for this baptismal data, other than your marvelous website?

What are the surnames of your Fermanagh ancestors? ARMSTRONG, FRAZER, JOHNSTON
If they immigrated to other countries, where? AUSTRALIA (New South Wales)
What year did they immigrate? 1857
Comments:

ROBERT FRAZER (c 1826-1866) and MARY ARMSTRONG (c 1831-1901) were my great-great-grandparents.

On August 24 1856, at the Church of Ireland Templemaghery Tullanaglug in the Civil Parish of Magheraculmoney Co Fermanagh, ROBERT FRAZER (son of CHRISTOPHER FRAZER and MARY JOHNSTON) married MARY ARMSTRONG (daughter of CHARLES ARMSTRONG and JANE ? - I have heard that Jane was an Armstrong cousin).

Robert and Mary Frazer, together with Mary's brothers, CHARLES and JOHN ARMSTRONG came on the "Fitzjames" to Sydney Australia, arriving on 1 April 1857. From a shipping record: Mary had a cousin in NSW, whereabouts unknown.

They all settled at Blue Gum Flat (Ourimbah) NSW. CHARLES CHRISTOPHER FRAZER, Robert and Mary's first son, bought land adjacent to his parent's first home, and Charles' descendants still live and farm on a portion of this property.

Robert and Mary's other three children were my great-grandfather, JOSEPH JOHN FRAZER, an unnamed baby girl, and MARGARET JANE E. FRAZER.

I hope to find out more about the Frazer, Armstrong and Johnston families in Fermanagh. So far all I know is that there were only a couple of Frazer families there in 1857, but lots and lots of Armstrongs and Johnstons!

I would love to share my family tree with all my 'cousins'! Please contact me. Tricia

What are the surnames of your Fermanagh ancestors? Bamford, McVitty, Welsh, Armstrong, Beatty
If they immigrated to other countries, where? My mother emigrated to South Africa
What year did they immigrate? 1938
Comments:
The most interesting site I have found so far! So much interesting detail and so clearly laid out. It is a pleasure to read it.
What pleases me even more is that in it I have finally found one link to my maternal grandfather, James Presley McVitty, who lived his later life in Woodford in Armagh, where he died sometime during World War II - I don't know his date or place of birth, but my mother, Laura Presley McVitty, was born in a house called Greenbank just outside Clones, in 1908, and the link has a James McVitty marrying a Jane Presley in the parish of Galloon, in I think Newtown Butler, so they could be related - too much of a coincidence.
My grandmother's family, the Bamfords, lived in the house Lisnaroe, near Clones, which I believe burned down some years ago. Someone from the area might know the last of the Bamfords to live there: my mother's cousin Fred, his wife Helen, and their sons Maurice (I think), and the triplets Stephen, Peter and Niall, who would be about 40 now. I would really appreciate any information from local people - I know where Helen is, but don't have her contact details here. I live in Berkshire.
The Welsh connection is via descendants of John Knox, from his marriage to Margaret Stewart, daughter of Lord Ochiltree - on this site I saw a reference to an Andrew, Lord Ochiltree, which is interesting, as I didn't know any of them had gone to Ireland. Josias Welsh, grandson of John Knox, is buried in the grounds of Castle Upton, in Templepatrick, Antrim, where he was minister to one Norton, one of the Templketown lords, in the early 17th century.

Sarah supposedly had a brother, Eli and a sister Amy who also married a McGuire man. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated and am certainly willing to trade information!

From the "County Fermanagh Northern Ireland Genweb, Church of Ireland Marriage Licence Bonds, Diocese of Clogher Extracts, I have found the marriage of John Maguire & Ann Arthurs in 1822. Is it possible to obtain further information from these "Extracts" & if so, how?
Their son James Arthurs Maguire, born on 18 July 1840 in Monea, Fermanagh. He migrated to New Zealand abt 1863 & married Henrietta Jane Luscombe on 6 February 1868 at Westport, New Zealand.
I am looking for any information about John & Anne Maguire, & of any other children. Also further information about James Arthurs Maguire's christening, & where.
This is a great site!
Many thanks, Jenny Maguire-Rowe

Our Catherine Wiley rarely talked about her upbringing, but she must have been well educated as her writing was beautiful and her Engish, flawless. We visited the area and found McElroys both alive and in the cemetery, but no real information. The records in Belfast weren't too much help either although they did show McElroys at the Stewart estates, apparently on the border.

Believe my father lived in area a few miles N of Pettigo. Have relatives in Templecacane (Carn)Cemetary. I'm not sure but believe the Townland to be Carne. It is difficult to get a very precise picture of this area since the maps have little detail and precise location cannot easily be determined.

What are the surnames of your Fermanagh ancestors? ELLIOTT
If they immigrated to other countries, where? America
What year did they immigrate? 1853
Comments:
Christopher BETTS/BETZ & Lucinda ELLIOTT- BETTS of Butler County, IA are my great-grandparents. They were married Jan. 1, 1859 in Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County, IA by Rev. J.M. Phillips & are buried in Lowelltown Cemetery, Clarksville, Butler County, IA. I have a small dark tintype of Lucinda playing her accordion so evidently she was musically inclined! She also seems to have had girlfriends in the Butterworth family. Verbal tradition tells she could see the World's Fair from their home in Kansas City. Not too many clues.

I have traced Christopher BETTS back to his BETZ roots in Somerset County, PA but know nothing of Lucinda. I found them registered on page 86, #256/237 in the Iowa, Black Hawk County 1860 census, roll 187. Lucinda's age was 22 and her birth place is Ireland! Living with them then was another ELLIOTT, Charles, 21, a carpenter also born in Ireland! (perhaps a brother?)

I then found an entry for another ELLIOTT family in the same region at # 307/287, and all adults were also born in Ireland! Their names were:

William, a farmer of 45 yrs, Jane, 30, and Charles, 23, a blacksmith. Two young children, George DB, 4 yrs. and William A., 2 yrs. were also included but they were born in IA.

Since this discovery, a Mary Martin responded to a query with the following reply: I tried your Lucinda/Charles combination of names, and found the following:

Passenger-Lucy Elliott
Age-18
Gender-Female
Occupation-servant
Last residence-Ireland
Port of debarkation-New York
Ship-America
Date- 05/14/1853
Manifest ID 900407
Port of embarkation-Liverpool
Purpose for travel-Staying in USA but not a citizen of USA
Mode of travel-steerage

Passenger-Charles Elliott, 20, male, labourer
Passenger-Joseph Elliott, 27, male, joiner
Passenger-Margaret, 15, Female, child
William, 44, Male, farmer

All of the rest of the information is the same as that of Lucy. There is no proof that any of these Elliotts were from the same family, but there is always that possibility.

These two families could be related! I've never been able to understand how/why a young man from the center of PA suddenly shows up in IA and married there. I wonder if he might have met relatives of one of the many ELLIOTT families which populated the state of PA in those early days and perhaps accompanied them or traveled with them to IA where they were married. If they were a newly arrived immigrant family related to those PA ELLIOTTS, they well might have made the trip to IA at the same time as Christopher BETZ. . Who knows? I try to imagine any possible scenario.
My grandfather was named Arthur Elliott Betts and he, in turn named one of his sons, my father, the same name...jr.

Charles and Arthur seem to be names Lucinda gave 2 of her sons which I do not find in the BETTS line. Lucy named her other children: eldest-William H. Betts; 2nd- John Wesley Betts; 3rd-Elizabeth M. (Lizzie) Betts; 4th-Charles Betts; George Herbert Betts. Maybe this could be an indication of connection to other ELLIOTTs. Do you have or know of others who might have, any connections to this Iowa Elliott family?

Thanks for sharing.

Billie Betts Leclerc

James Robinson was born in Fermanagh in 1801 and married before he joined the RIC in 1831. He was recommended for the force by the Earl of Enniskillen and served in Arva, Co.Cavan. I think he married a Mary Fausset also from Fermanagh but as most records of the time have been destroyed I do not know where in Fermanagh he originated. He died in 1883 in Kilmore and his wife died in 1880 also in Kilmore.
