Hi from Sweden! My ancestors in the Dovastone lines starts with Esther Maren Ellis nee Dovaston. Maren was my mothers cousin. Marens father was Harold Arthur Dovaston. Then I've travelled back to John Dovaston b about 1580 and his wife Winifred b about 1582.

Hopefully I can give some information. For instance: Fredrick William Dovaston b 1888 looked very much like Winston Churchill and acted as his stand in during WWII.

Very good website Sue. Does anyone have any connections to the Doveastons from around Much Wenlock area and surrounding villages? I am researching my son in law's family. John Dovaston (later Doveaston) and his wife Harriet Jones, some of their children uprooted from Shropshire and moved outwards to South Wales, Manchester, etc. I am trying to find out who John Doveaston's father was, John was born around 1816 and had roughly about 8 children, John was born around the Much Wenlock area. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi there, I have just read your guest book pages there are so many entries, I thought i might have a go and add mine. My grandmother was Emily Dovaston who lived in Liverpool and she was the daughter of William who came from Shropshire. I became interested in family history when I was much younger and so it was not just names and dates wrote down short snipets of description. William was always down as being lazy even his other daughter Nellie said so as well. Does anyone have any information about him - did he have any redeming features?

My mother married John Venson Page Sams who is still alive. My father and I live in Worthing, West Sussex.

I know my father is looking in to family history and I have passed on some of your wonderful research to him.

My mother and father, plus myself and my sister have and are involved in eductaion, being Proprietors of an independent school in Worthing. Alfred and my Grandmother used to live with us at the family home which was within the school.

Thanks so much for your hard work in tracing the Dovaston family history

Hi from the Southery Fens in Norfolk. What a great site & informative too. I used to have a small pest control company & many years ago was given a framed print in lieu of a very small job. I had no interest in it but the elderly lady that gave it said her husband loved it & I felt obliged to keep it. The print is of Margarets "A tall story" &, being a fly-fisher of trout, have over the years, also come to love it too. Great to see you keeping her work & memory alive.

Hi Sue.
Me again.
I see you have Ann Tomlins marrying a Samuel Dovaston 4/3/1805 in Pontesbury. Their son Thomas was born in 1808.

I think this might be my relative but you have him dying in Atcham in 1883. My Thomas eventually moved to Staffordshire and died in Tipton in 1887. How sure are you?

I see his sister Elizabeth moved to Wolverhampton and married there in 1843. This would have been virtually next door to my ancestors but their name by now was DEVISON , I think.

What do you think?

Janet Cook

Hello Sue.

I am afraid I am another product of a line of the Dovastons that you have not tracked down!
My greatx4 grandfather was Thomas DOVASON/DOVASTON born 9/10/1808 in Westbury, Shropshire and marrying Elizabeth Evans in Welshpool 2/4/1834 (you do have a record and her, and their first four children).I am descended from the second son, Evan.

He has been difficult to track as the censuses have various spellings DEVISON/DAVISON/DEVESON but the family thought of themselves as DEVISON.There is some family legend that they had to run away from Wales because of sheep rustling and lose themselves in the Black Country and become DAVISON.

Im not sure about the truth of this!

I have only recently discovered the DOVASON name , by accident and it seems the names DOVASON and DOVASTON are virtually interchangeable.

I am having difficulty tracking Thomas' parents although as their first son was Thomas , their second Evan after Elizabeth's father, I think the third son Samuel may well have been named after Thomas' father.

Do you have any Samuel Dovasons , around Westbury in 1800s?

Hope you get this message.

Janet Cook

There is evidence to suggest that Eleanor Johnson married to John Dovaston in 1819 in Shrewsbury, was actually born in Shropshire, not Suckley as previously thought. I am researching my Russell family tree and have managed so far to trace my greatx4 grandfather William Russell 1760 who married a lady called Ann Cronk, whom I believe might be the widow of James Cronk (1768), but am still trying to find out the date James died to see if this is feasible. My Ann and William were married in Sundridge and subsequently lived in Brasted (where, incidentally, there were another William and Ann Russell who had a large family.) but my William and Ann had just one son Elisha born 1819, as they were both in their 50s/40s this would make sense.

It appears that those of us who are descended from John Dovaston and his second wife Miriam Browne, and her parents Thomas and Christiana Browne, did for a time own Sweeney Hall near Ostwestry in Shropshire, which is now a very nice hotel. This is why the children are listed on Family Search as having been born or christened at Sweeney! Thomas and Christiana Browne inherited Sweeney Hall from Thomas' parents, who were Thomas Browne Senior and his wife Mary Lloyd. Mary Lloyd was the niece of the Hall's owner Thomas Baker and when Thomas Baker died without issue, he bequeathed the Hall to his niece Mary Lloyd and husband Thomas Browne. She was the daughter of his sister Katherine Baker who married Edward Lloyd. I don't know how long they owned the Hall, as according to archives, the widowed Christiana had to turn over all her property to son Thomas Browne as he seemed to be in a bit of financial trouble in 1705, or was it that women could not own anything? The website for Sweeney Hall Country House Hotel does mention Thomas Browne on its history page.
PS: Could Christiana had been a Miss Morris? She named her firstborn Morris Browne!

I posted a question a few entries ago regarding Sarah Anne Pugh. By sheer luck and a discovered annotated photograph I have unravelled the family misunderstanding and mystery and determined that Sarah Anne Pugh is a daughter of Eliza Dovaston (born 4 March 1843). So I hook into the line via Sarah Anne Evans (nee Pugh) who is my Great Grandmother.

My Great Great Grandmother was known in her maiden life as Sarah Pugh. She married Charles Evan Evans of Greenfields, Shrewsbury. Sarah died 7 July 1934 and her name recorded on the death certificate is Sarah Dovaston daughter of Dovaston village. Does anyone know if and where she fits into the Dovaston line?

I contacted you several years ago through friends reunited as my father was I understand descended from the Dovastons of West Felton. His sister (he was one of 8 children)visited The church in West Felton and found out quite a lot about the family history. My grandfather was Richard Morris Williams but he died before I was born, however he christened one of his sons John Dovaston Williams which would imply that there was a fairly recent connection, I have done some research but cannot find a Dovaston daughter who married a Williams. My aunt always said that the Dovastons disapproved and that they disowned her. I think it was a Margaret Dovaston but I am not sure . Alas I am the only survivor of the williams clan and have come to a complete impasse.Your research is very impressive and I commend all your hard work. if you have any information that would shed some light on this mystery I would love to hear from you.Happy New Year Judy Millard

Hi Sue!
I have just been visiting your site again! I don't think I told you last visit, that we Jackubans on your site are spelt JAKUBANS? It's a good old fashioned Latvian name!!! My husband was a migrant to this country in the 1950s, also my mum's name is Hilda Urith Finlayson, not Hilda Ruth Finlayson! I also forgot to say I live in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, an hour from the Smeaton area where all the Australian Dovastons settled in the 1800s. I've driven through the district a million times and never really thought about my ancestors. Next time I'll stop and look around!
Cheers,
Diane

I recently obtained in a London auction a letter to JFM Dovaston from a John Fell of liverpool concerning a mortgage on a farm in Llangollen held by John F M Dovaston and amounts due to Dovaston on that mortgage. Within the letter is the reply from JFM Dovaston, in his hand, dated July 23 1840. I was delighted to find so much interesting information about JFMD from your site, and also to note on the 1851 census a John Povey related by marriage and living in John Dovaston's house. My family has strong Shropshire roots and my father, also John Povey, was born in Atcham near Shrewsbury. Regards, Charles Povey, Vancouver, Canada

Dear Sue,
A very impressive site, which I have been looking at with my Mum. I am a direct descendant of Horace Ingram. He was my Great Great Granfather. I actually researched the family for my dissertation about ten years ago. I spent time in Old Basing church and school. He was the Headmaster there and is reputed to be an influential figure in education and the three R's. Interestingly music is a key feature throughout the family and I notice this seems to be an interest of yours too!!

Yours,

Rebecca Ingram

Sue, I am glad to see you are back on the family history. I sent a message in October 2004 regarding Emily or Emma Stant, born in 1843, sister of Jane.

I have discovered some more about them in the meantime which suggests that the two I found living in Liverpool in the 1871 census are almost certainly the same two sisters from Ruyton XI Towns. In 1861 they are in separate locations in Staffordshire and Shropshire.

I would like to get in touch with you about this. I now have a theory that 'Emma' was in fact Emily all along. In the next generation there is a Margaret Emily and a Naomi Jane.

I have not managed to contact Ruth Dovaston Stant, but I have been in touch with several other Stant descendents, (including one of Joseph's line) but no one appears to have any additional information which would help me.

I have further details of those mentioned, if you are interested.

K Lawson.

Many thanks to all those who have left me messages - and my apologies for doing nothing about them. For the last couple of years my daughter and I have been building up an Internet business selling used books (www.javaslublu.com) and Family Research had to put on the back burner.
But there's this little itch that means I'll be getting back to it soon :-) And then I'll contact you all.

A fascinating site. My wife and I have lived in West Felton for 10 years and have often wondered what used to stand on the site where Dovaston Court is built. It was great to see the photo of the Nursery and I would love to see any other photos that exist of this house and gardens.

I'm interested in the Dovaston name. Specifically, Anne or Robert. Anne was born in 1849/50 in India. She married John Brown in 1869 in Gillingham and they had at least one daughter, Ellen, and possibly another (Lilian)? Anne's father was Robert Dovaston and in 1869 he was a 'clerk at Fort Pitt' in Kent. This is all I know but if anyone has any more info or thinks they might be related I would love to hear from you.

I am researching my family descended from Charles Milward dovaston Humphreys particularly his daughter Mary Dovaston Welch nee Humphreys her sons Francis Bacon Welch and Thomas Gascoigne Welch and her son by her lover Ernest Perring known as Ernest Arthur Welch later Miller. Mary was my great grandmother through Ernest. She became a music hall pianist in Yorkshire I believe and went under the name Minnie Moscow, I have no trace of her after 1869. Any help would be gratefully received. I have plenty of family history re Humphreys to share.

We have a Stant connection in our family tree that has not
been properly resolved. I tried to e-mail you earlier this year, but must have been using an old address. I have also seen the tree of Ruth Dovaston Stant on the web.
I had suspected that our Emily Stant, born 1843-44 who died in the Wirral in 1876 after marrying William Lawson in 1874,
was one of the Shropshire branch - but had no firm evidence.
Now I have been given an extract from the 1871 census in Liverpool, showing Jane Stant (aged 29) and Emily Stant (aged 27) living alone in the same street as William Lawson and family! They were both waitresses, born in Ruyton, Salop. I already knew that a Jane Stant was a witness at Emily's wedding, and that the father was called "Thomas Stant, builder". Of course I cannot prove yet that they are the same family as yours (I have not seen that you have an Emily in that generation, but I think Ruth DS had an "Emma"). If it were the case, then this might help to explain what happened to some of the children whose parents (Thomas and Jane) died young.
William Lawson is my ancestor, Emily Stant was his second wife, but as far as we are aware there were no surviving children. There is just a small possibility that Emily was our ancestor... rather than wife no. 1, as a child was taken away to Yorkshire and brought up by an uncle and aunt in the 1870s.
Any help to substantiate or disprove any of these theories would be much appreciated.
Best regards, Kristina Lawson

Hi, I now live in New Mexico USA. I am from Bromley, Kent UK. I found your website searching for info on the artist of a painting I have had for many years. Probably 30 yrs +. I always take it wherever I move. Its an interior of an old English house (rich persons as is large and has carved wood walls). Its an interesting scene of a seated bishop, and 3-4 very well dressed men all looking at a model of a galleon. There are two men in the background. Costumes could be regency period, although I am not good at this! Artist's signature is M. Dovaston. Could this be one of Margaret Dovaston's picture's? I have always wondered what the pic was all about, can you help?
I am a librarian, by the way, and perhaps I should have done my research better!
Best Wishes Adrianne W. ps I would appreciate your reply.

Dear Susan,
My cousin, Kathryn Blackshaw sent me information about your website which I am visiting for the first time. I am amazed to see my Mum's photos of the John Beesley family on your web site. My Mum is Rosalie May Beesley (Babcock) dauthter of John Alfred David Beesley the little boy in your first photo of the family, she is now 90 and in a nursing home but her mind is still very sharp. Only last night she was talking about the family tree. She used to play with the triplets and Ena and went out on family outings. In your research on the Beesley's did you ever come across a reference to an Edith Beesley?

Hi,
I've just had a quick browse & couldn't find any helpful links, but I'll be back.
I'm trying to tie down the birthplace (believed to be West Dean, Sussex) of my g'father Joseph Lambert Wilson. I believe the Parish church is in Singleton and we believe he was educated in Singleton. If anyone has, or can find, any information I'll be very grateful.
I'm also seeking information on the Lambert family (my g'g'father's wife's relatives) who seem to have moved about a bit but who were in Askern nr Doncaster at the 1901 Census.
Also the Morritt ( Sarah Jane b. c.1850, Kingston-upon-Hull, the 1st wife of my g'g'father George Cooper)family, from the same general area.
Again, any information will br greatly appreciated.

I also have a copy of Ada's New Zealand birth certificate, born Feb 17, 1873. It shows her mother as Helen Burton (nee Draper. I also have notes from my father mentioning that he remembers receiving Christmas gifts from his grandparents in Egypt sometime around 1912. They may have died there. Not sure if there is any connection to your family. I did notice a couple of Manser's in your Surname list, but they do not appear to be part of the George Manser family.

Hello Sue I think this site is very good and obviously a lot of hard work has gone into it well done to every one. I am researching the Welch line and have a lot of relatives in the Kensington and Chelsea area whether or not Mary Ann who married 1879 Henry Welch are a link I will have to try to do some digging. The family originated {as far as I have researched to) In 1836 father was Joseph Welch Married Mary Anne Bush in Herts shown living in Newgate St Village 1836 . Son William born same year know of another daughter shown on a removal order in 1840 aged 4 years and upwards Eliza. William Married an Elled Saddler who was born in Hackney they lived in Hammersmith area shown on 1891 census Wharf Rd one of their Sons Alfred Dowley Welch b1880 Kensington married a Rose Leakey. Is there a Leakey spelt Leeke on the marriage certificate shown here Henry William and Mary Welch on your site? I can't be sure, my eyes are not as good as they used to be. My Joseph was a labourer
as where his descendants. I believe one of Williams borthers went to Brighton as was a cab driver. Thanks for your time. Regards Carole Welch.

Hi, First, regarding your brick wall Henry Beesley. I have Beesleys in my tree, and the spelling of the name in many different ways certainly complicates the research. Henry is a common name in my lot, and they were tailors, drapers, and butchers. They were from Harbury in Warwickshire and surrounding villages. I don't have one of the right date, but I am only following the one line. It might be worth looking.

Secondly, I am doing some research for a friend on the Jurys of Peasmarsh. He is a descendant of Mark Jury, son of Stephen. Do you happen to know anything more about the Lydia Jury/Thomas Jury marriage in 1809? Were they cousins, or not related?

Best wishes, Val Wright.

Caroline Kenward married William Goodman in the 1850's and had a daughter Julia born in 1860. They emigrated to the states in 1864 according to the 1920 Federal Census. I found two Carolines listed in the June quarter of 1854 in St. Olave. No matching Goodmans. A slew of William Goodmans married from 1850 to 1859, but no matching Kenwards. Can anyone put these two souls together? Thank you

Got your website info from my cousin in Windsor, not Dovaston related. I am the grandson of Dorothy Columbine Dovaston, son of Shirley Beckett and John Dupcza. I just wanted to update some of your information. Your site is awesome in its scope and I can't imagine how you managed to get all this information as well documented as you have.

My wife's maiden name is Lynn Dadd. My daughter is Krista Cyan Dovaston. My grandmother, Dorothy, did not pass away in 1979, but later than that. I am getting that information for you. My uncle's name is Linn Beckett. You have listed Michael Beckett as one of his sons. His sons are Patrick and Daniel as well as daughter, Lauralinn. Michael belongs to David Beckett and Shirley. He is not married.
As soon as I have the information relating to Dorothy, I will email you again. Will definitely look around some more, and if I can provide and corrections for you, I will certainly do so.

Best and warmest regards,

Terry Dovaston

Had lots of fun - spotting the connection/s
My grandfather was William John Newing who married my grandmother Phoebe Ruth Nye after divorcing Priscilla Emmaline Windley.
The Nye connection is relate to your husband from Horsham. My 4xgrandfather and 3xgrandfather were James Nye Snr and James Nye Jnr part of the Shipley gang but stated to come from Horsham.
Then my Sewell connection came through a George Sewell transported from York in 1814 - doubt if related to Judith but I would never know. Haven't gone back that far as yet
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your efforts and in particular your story of the elusive Aunt Clara Windley
No direct relations but many connections

Mary Lou of Vancouver Island sent me your site. Congratulations - I found it most interesting. I am a descendant of James Gutsall (1672-1740) and Ann Backwell (1676-1722) from their son 8th child Jeremiah brother of James who married Mary Chester. From my research it appears that Samuel b.1742 who married Ann Crampe in 1775 is the son of James and Mary. Children born to them from 1777 until 1789.

Samuel b.1722 who married Elizabeth Chester in 1763 is the son of James b.1672 and Ann Backwell. Children born to them from 1765 until 1783.

Would be pleased to hear from you if you think my research is incorrect.

Once again congratulations on a family tree well done.

Hi Sue,

I am now one of the FreeBMD transcribers. Just thought I would check and see if we were related anywhere along the way. You have one Casey listed (my maiden name) but I doubt very much if we are related. As far as I know my lot have hardly been out of England!! You certainly seem to have put a lot of work into your tree. 10 out of 10 for a job well done.

Hello::

I hope that you can help me.. I have a painting that I believe Margaret Dovaston di. It is signed M. Dovaston. It is a picture of men sitting around a table playing cards.
The background is a great big stone fireplace. And it seems that a servant is at a bar of sort pouring a drink. The scene looks as though it would be someone house. The colors of the clothings fit the other pictures that I have seen. Please advise me where I may get someone to look at the picture to verify indeed that it is one of Margaret Dovaston.

Looking forward to your reply ASAP.

Hi Sue,
It was great to hear from you.Have been looking at your names list and I have found some of my relations on it.
Henry Remmington born 1837 in Frettenham, Norfolk was my gt gt grandfather. He and his wife moved to Kings Lynn sometime before the 1871 census. His daughters were Ellen, born Gaywood, and Emma, also born gaywood. In the 1851 census, Henry is down as living with a Charles Remmington in Frettenham,Norfolk. Charles is on your Remmington list as being born in 1820 and dying in June 1880. He actually died on 29 May 1880, have seen his headstone in Frettenham graveyard. On my list I have a William Remmington and as of the 1851 census he was living in Hainford, Norfolk though being born in Frettenham. He was living with his wife Pemale

They were at South Malling & Chiltington, before returning to Henfield.

I always have a squint at personal websites to see what they're like - looking for inspiration. Yours is lovely, direct, easy to navigate, uncluttered - I can see the teacher! Me too, although I was lucky and got early retirement, so the house remains untidy and dusty while I rootle about in the past rather than the present!
I am jealous of your 'branch', how super to find a real tree with 'your' name. I enjoyed reading 'all about you' too. Best wishes, Ruth in Brum.

What a fantastic idea, I have been longing to trace my family tree. I was born Jane Dovaston in Canterbury Kent January 1956 to a Reginald Edward Gilbert Dovaston and Bettine Dovaston (Nee French) my father was born in 1915 in Newport Monmouthshire (now Gwent) Wales he had one sister Doreen Dovaston who went to live in USA and died last year. My father had no uncle's and had three daughters and therefore when my mum goes there will be no family line to continue, I find that rather sad, hence my interest in finding out about my ancestors. My sister forwarded your e.mail newsletter to me and we are both keen to learn more about our Dovaston history. I think the Website is brillient, and look forward to finding out a lot more.

Congrats on a very nice web site, many I see are very amateur but yours is clear, bright and easy. Anyway, I also saw the FreeBMD link and was curious. I have printed out some data to compare with my tree and it looks very useful indeed. What a good site! Great work they/you are doing. Keep it up Sue.

Hello Sue
I am here under the direction of Kareena Shipley.
Kareena is draging me into family history research which I am enjoying but find insufficient time rather limiting.
I am descended from the Burtons, my mum being Dorothy Marston Gibbs. Kareena sent me a picture which included Jean Hennessy who mum meets up with periodically.
Anyhow I am looking at tthe Gibbs side of my family, Hence Kareena, and also the Broughtons. I have a feeling that there is a connection between both families in that The Gibbs are from Mary Remmington 1813 who married John Burton and the Broughtons are from Mary's sister Elizabeth 1808 who married Edward Broughton. Not sure if this is the correct connection. If you have any views on the matter I should be pleased to hear of them.
Magic this www I find myself writing to all sorts of strangers and establishing new friendship.
Regards Sid.
