I noted from the email you sent to Derek St.John, who is the son of one of my cousins, that you were having trouble finding Amelias parents. Her Mothers name was Margaret and you have a photo of her headstone on your site. Noted as the Mother of Edith (who was married to William Garner) and Charles Gracey. Margaret is my Grandmother. It is her husband, Edward that I cannot find a record of. No one knows where he is buried or when he died. K.N.

Don't know why I said Lorne was Mavis husband as her husband was actually Orville Kenneth Gracey.
Lorne Gracey was the husband of Isobel Keeling and I have also located their children
Also looking for info on the Fleming family as I have learned Margaret Gracey was a Fleming and had two sons by that name.

I am the "unknown" son of Verna Gracey, Amelia Hunters'(Gracey) sister. Cousin of Gord Hunter.
My Grandmother, Margaret Gracey is also buried there but no trace of her husband Edwar Gracey. No one knows where he is buried or when he died. I have located many of my cousins, children of Mavis and Lorne Gracey. A long story which also includes the Fleming family of Alton. K.N.

Hi, I grew up in Alton,Ont. There are even more Baughman stones in the cemetery. Some you have to go over with your fingers. to read them. Last week I found 2 gravestones(not my family) dating back to 1843. If I had the time and money I would pull back the earth that is covering all the old stones. The map for the old part of the cemetery is no longer around, apparantly lost in a fire(?). My mother has the newer one. as far as I know it is the only existing one. I think it`s great what you are doing

Surprised I hadn't run across this site before. I have a lot of pictures of the headstones also which I took in 1995. Picture M0029 is my grandparents (Andrew & May) and my great Aunt & Uncle (Rudy & Alice. It's very interesting as I also try to keep track of my family history when time permits.

I would suggest that my first cemetery search was Alton, circa 1996. I recall visting Alton perhaps 50 years ago with my mother and long after she was gone and when I started my genealogical quest, Alton was one of the first destinations. Almost in the front row are my great, great grandparents, Nicholas Smith and his wife, Agnes/Nancy ____ . Smith. Nicholas was apparently the overseer of roads and Agnes, Nicholas, Amelia and Nelson Streets are named for various family members. Land records indicate that Nicholas purchased the north quarter 50 acres of lot 23, concession 4 from Elizabeth Gaynor in 1849. Nicholas was born in New York state, circa 1801 and seems to have moved to Beaverdams / Thorold about 1825 when the first Welland Canal was under construction. At various times he's listed as a wheelwright, mill wright and miller and definitely operated a mill in Alton. Nancy / Agnes is one of those "brick walls." She was born Beaverdams / Thorold circa 1806 and I can not find her marriage record or baptismal record for any of her 9 children. I even have the family Bible, done a little after the fact and listing all her children's apparent birth dates but it does not contain Nancy / Agnes' maiden name.
I stumbled across your website today when I was completing data regarding my gt, gt, gt aunts and uncles. The Smith offspring were William, born 1827; Walter born 1828; Martha Ann born 1830; Robert born 1834, married Melissa Wright and died 1900, Brant Twp; Eliza Jane born 1835, married Richard S. Wilkinson, died 1873, buried Alton; Alfred born 1837, married Camilla Reddick, died 1897, Orangeville, buried Forest Lawn; Alralira born 1839; Amelia born 1842, married Peter Lemon, died 1893, buried Alton; and finally my great grandfather Nelson born 1844, married Eliza Hughson of Mono, died 1919, Toronto. Of course I would love to here from relative or anyone that could assist with the usual genalogical quest.

Thanks for much for all your hard work regarding the Alton cemetary. Most of my McClellan relatives are buried there.
I have been to Alton a few times. My grandparents (Henry Mcclellan and Sara Jane Murch) last lived in the old duplex house next to the cemetary. Henry's sister Charlotta (McClellan) Cameron lived on the other side. The house used to be a church and is still standing.
