I am looking for information on James A. Geren.
He is (would have been) my father-in-law.
He died when my wife was 12 so she never really knew of he involvement with the 514th.
Being a former Marine Crew chief (UH-1Ns) I am interested in finding any information /old pictures anyone might have of Mr. Geren.
Thanks

Boyd Hilton was my uncle. He was killed 0n 4/19/1951 when the engine failed in a F-84E in Germany. His parachute failed to open. His home is listed as "Brinkley Utah" on your address list, it was actually "Hinckley, Utah" where he grew up. Thanks for having this web site, I'm doing research on my uncles and it is helpful to know the information you have listed here. Thank you David Hilton

1st row (left to right): Boyd Hilton, George Ruddell, Isham Dorsey, Milton Sanders, Donald Smith, Frank Shrum, Malcolm McLane, and Edwin Unger, Jr.
2nd row (left to right): Bryant Cramer, Hilton Lewis, Bryce Long, Converse Kelly, Hartridge McMillan, William Phebus, Bernard Sledzik, and Herschell Larrick, Jr.
3rd row (left to right): James Mundy, Miles Jones, Roy Saux, Al Johnson (Intelligence Officer - not pilot), J. C. Van Bloom, Frank Dowell, Clyde McFrederick, and Samuel Hedges.
Standing: Robert Knapp.
Hope this helps those of you trying to figure this out!

Thank you, David, for this website and for your help in gathering information about my grandfather, Bryant L. Cramer, KIA August 7, 1944.
I started to research my grandfather for my mother in November, hoping to find out more about him for her, since she never knew him (was born right after he died) and was never able to get his family or her mother to tell her much about him. I have talked to some of the men from the 514th recently and would love to talk to anyone who knows about the 514th from their time at Congaree, SC, to England and France (he died while the group was in Tour-en-Bessin A-13). I am collecting pictures in a scrapbook of the men he knew and stories that people have been willing to share with me.
Please contact me if you knew my grandfather (he was apparently the unofficial barber for the group while overseas and was nicknamed "Cashy") or have any general information you can share with me!
Thanks! Cara

For him I would like to know his rank, from which base it came, its mission, from which state of the United States it came, No of the plane, if it were killed or wounded or captive, the hour or it was cut down, and if you have a photograph of him and its P47.
For the second it was named : Sgt John Warnock,387th Bomber Group, 558th Bomber Squadron,B-26.
For him I would like to know his Ser.no, its function on board, from which base it came, the mission, No of the plane, if it were killed or wounded or captive, if you have same information for the other members of crews, and a photograph of them and plane and from which state of the United States they came.

I like your site very much. My late Dad, Kenneth M. Knowles, is on your roster for the 514th. By the way, there is only one 's' in Knowles and there is no 'k' in Billerica. He flew for all three squadrons in the 406th, and eventually transferred to Group Ops. Did you know the 406th is having a reunion in San Antonio in November? If you are interested I can get you more details.
Regards,
Craig Knowles

Raymond "Nobby" Walsh of the 513th was the first American pilot to shoot down a Buzz Bomb. He was promoted to Captain immediately, was interviewed on he BBC and sent to the states for interviews. The date was June 19 1944. Best regards. Ross

Hi, my name is Bernie Tostenson, son of Lt. Weldon Tostenson. As a child I heard all the stories involving the war and the P-47's.
Dad named me after Bernie Sledzick.
I have a reel of film that was shot from the wing of my dad's airplane. When we tried to view it in the 50's, the film broke and we didn't know how to splice it together to see the rest. The part we saw was a repeted straifing of a moving train until a box car exploded.

PS I forgot to mention that my dad and Bernie Sledzick are shown in the photographs in the sections called "Taking a break", and "Listening to the latest records from the United States".
After the war he went on to work at Hughs Aircraft where he pioneered the Automatic Pilot as well as a number of other inventions.
Lt. Weldon Tostenson died in 1982. He was an amazing man.

I was the senior enlisted photograpic teck. in the squadron and I believe that I probably have a picture of every member about July 1945.
The pictures are as good as the day they were taken. No deteriation. Some are excellant close ups others are groups and lighting was not the best.
I also have a member roster dated 2 July 1945

Great site. I've always been a P-38 fan due to my Dad working on them during the wwar with the 9th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron. But over the last few years I have befriended one Al Rideout who was an Major with the 514th FS and have learned to appriciate the P-47 and the men who flew them. I have been helping Al and his wife Virginia downsize their belongings. One of the items we found was a ID bracelet for 1st Lt. Roger L. Wood # 0811921. I've spent about a month trying to find out as much as I can about Lt. Wood, in the hopes that I can locate one of his family members and return his ID bracele to them. I wrote to Maxwell AFB and obtained the M.A.C.R. regarding his death on Aug 23rd 1944. I really would like to obtain the city he lived in prior to the war to help my efforts in locating his family. Any help would be great.
Thanks, Jim Corbitt

What a great web site!
I see that my brother has also been here. Dad is a retired Lt. Colonel - Air Force. Dad flew P-47 fighters in the European theater during WWII - 116 missions. He had 7 planes shot up so badly that they were discarded. Dad received 2 Presidential Citations, 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 20 Air Medals, The French Croix De Guerre with Silver Star and the Belgium Fourragere (for fighting in the Battle of the Bulge). Dad was featured 10 years ago in a DISCOVERY documentary on the "Greatest Fighters in History", his being the P-47.
Dad is turning 87 next month (March 2004). Dad lives in Washington DC - he has 7 children, 28 grandchildren and 11 great grand children. For anyone who would like to speak with a WWII P-47 fighter pilot, I would love to set that up - please contact me at 301-681-8882 - or at rsanders@ovations-events.com

I enjoyed reading this story. I grew up with the 514th from stories my father told us. My dad is Milton W Sanders. I have read his copy of the 514th Squadron book from cover to cover for years. I almost feel like I know some of the pilots. I couldnt fly due to my eyes so I became a tank officer and later a Special Forces officer in the Army. I am now a police officer in Sandy Utah.
Everytime I read stories about these men who were thrown into such a conflict as WW2 it stirs up a lot of emotions inside me. As my father is getting older I appreciate talking with him even more. I almost had the opportunity of meeting Stanley Wyglendowski before he died.. but I wasnt able to get out there in time. I feel I missed a wonderful opportunity to meet one of these brave men ..
This is appropriate that I found this website on today Veteran's Day.
I salute all of you ! and thank you for your sacrifices.

Hello everybody,
First of all let me compliment you with an excellent website. It contains a wealth of information. But I also hope that you can answer a few questions which have been unsolved for a long time.
During the Summer of 1945 406th FG / 514th FS was at Venlo airfield Y-55 in the Netherlands for possibly one day in June. Probable reason was a victory parade together with the 394th BG which was based at Venlo at the time. Although we have a few photos to prove that the Squadron was at Venlo, we have no information on the reason and exact date. Could you help us please ?
Sincerely,
Hub Groeneveld

Remembering those that served during the second world war to safeguard our future from tyranny makes todays events even more poignant. Let us always remember with a sense of gratitude all those that participated in conflicts since 1939, and hope that the sacrifices of the brave men and women of America are not easily forgotten.
With gratitude.

If you served with him or had family or friends who did,or are just interested, I would like to hear from you.
I would be especially interested in stories, photos and memories. I will post those that are relevant ... with your permission, of course!
Thank you and God bless America!
