Name: Elmer Eugene Browning <ELMERBROWNING@COMCAST.NET>
Date: 2009-11-17
Earliest known ancestor Byran Ralph Browning
Location do not know
Comments:
My father's name was Byran Ralph Browning and I THINK he was born in New Harmony, Indiana. He was an only child, married to Mary Jenkins Mt Carmel, IL., (possibly). My grandfather's name(I think) was Edward Browning, maybe born in Indiana. He left my grandmother, and don't know what happened to him. My father divorced my mother for adultry, and she married another man in Vermillion County, IL., and my father later married Florence Nelson, and she was the best thing ever happened to me. She had no children of her own. She loved me. I was a ball turret gunner hanging out of the bottom of a B-17 in WWII, 35 missions over Germany and enemy occupied Belgium, France & Holland. I am 85, and I know nothing about my family, where the Brownings came from. I know my father talked about Popular Bluff, Mo., and believe that some of them possibly came from there. I really do not know. I have published a book: "Elmer's Tune" about my part in the war.
Thanks,
Elmer Eugene Browning. Page 1 if you go into Google and type in elmer browning, the 1st 2 entries will be about me and my name. Also the Distinguished Flying Cross website which I received.

Your family history has intrigued me to trace my father's family tree - William James Sexton, born Dec 31st, 1917 in London England, died February 1996 in Vancouver Canada. Very interesting research, thank you for sharing. I had no idea there was a Sexton family crest or that there were so many variations in the spelling of the name. There are eight Sexton children still living in Vancouver from my grandfather's line and numerous grandchildren.

Thomas Brown had many children, more than a dozen, and was married twice in his lifetime. in 1871, Eugene Brown was born to Thomas Brown and Elizabeth Paris Brown. Eugene Brown had a son named Elmer in 1898. Elmer married Eunice Wix and they had a son, Melvin Brown in 1825. Melvin married Eloise Shulties and had Melvin JR in 1948. Melvin had me, Jeffrey, in 1982.

I am very interested in anything concerning John Brown and his family. Do you have any genealogy on him?

I descend from William & Elizabeth (Bobbitt) Morgan. William is Free Sexton's father-in-law. He is approximately the same generation as Isaac Sexton and resided in Grayson County, Virginia from 1797-1799 or so and then moved to Knox County, Kentucky. He shows up on road lists with Isaac Sexton in Knox County.

Have you ever searched for Hannah (Morgan) Sexton's parents? I am wondering if she might be a sister or cousin to my William.

I may have already commented here sometime in 2004 or 2005. It would be nice to know a little more about what the Markey's did (farm, merchants, etc).

This is my great grandmother. She was born Canada (1875)and emigrated to the U.S. in 1880. She married Adam H. Smith about 1894 and they had a daughter, Gertrude May Smith, born May 1895. I believe May passed away shortly after this 1900 Census info I found.
I am trying to find out more about our Cain family roots....as the about mentioned Gertrude May was my mother's Mom and only lived until my Mom was 9 years old. My Mom never learned much about this part of her family and I would adore finding info for her, she is almost 85 years old.
Thank you for any info you may have!!!

Trying to find information on my maternal grandmother - her military records were in the section of the National Service Record Center that burned in the 1970s, so I have had a devil of a time finding anything. Her mother's name was Minnie Shophaus Cain, her dad was William Cain, and she had several siblings, one of whom was a much younger brother named Ellsworth Cain. Grandmother was an Army nurse in World War I, stationed at Fort Dix in New Jersey. She there met and married Harvey Fenimore, and moved to his home state of Delaware. She had two children, Harvey, Jr (born Feb 1921) and a daughter (my mother), Frances Louise Cain Fenimore (born July 21, 1923). She died from TB in March 1928, and is buried in Silverbrook Cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware

I'd be grateful for any help I could get to connect with any part of the family.

I do believe that is the "story" from my Momma!!
Other then the stories about Grandpa seeing wolves on the frozen lake (Lake of the Woods)...at Warroad, MN; and being of Ojibwa descent (and the white folks spitting on our Native American family member (Grandma -so much so that she had to be taken back north)---(racism still going on to this day).
There are a few of us that have the Ojibwa nose!
I would be proud to know my family. Am looking forward to any and all info you can pass along!! Thanks! Have a Blessed Day!, Sherry Lynn

Earliest known ancestor Daniel Cain
Time Frame Kent Cty, DE 1700s
Location Not sure
Comments:
The Daniel Cain listed above is (apparently) the father of Thomas Cain from Kent Cty, DE who married Sealah (or Celia) Steelman. I think the link between our lines is with Daniel and his brothers (I assume he had brothers)or possibly even earlier. I wish I could trace the line back to the 7 brothers I've read about who supposedly immigrate to the US from the Ireland via the Isle of Man. My grandmother always said our line was from Ireland. I'm sure she is just passing along something that had been passed down for generations. I don't know if it's true or false, but I'm guessing there is probably something to it.

I'm trying to find ancestors of John P. Chapman. He married Sarah H. McLin in Blounty County, TN May, 1, 1821. They are both buried in the Unitia Cemetary in Loudon County, TN.

John P's father may be Benjamin Chapman who was born in Baltimore, MD in July 13, 1760. Benjamin married Sarah McCorkle. Ben later moved to Washington County, TN and then to Roane County, TN. Ben died in Roane County, TN and applied for a Rev. War pension in 1840. I have a copy of his pension application.

I just put your site in my Alexander County folder for further research in the area. On my father's paternal side I descend from Lewis King born abt 1813 and Elizabeth. They had a son named James King born about 1846 who was married at least twice. First he married Ellen Teague daughter of Isaac teague and Nancy. Ellen and James had William King born abt 1868 and Laura King born about 1870. Apparently they split up and James married Jane CAntrel from Polk County. William went with James and Laura stayed with Ellen and Ellen moved back in with her parents according 1880 census. James and Jane were in Patrick Co VA in 1880. I was just researching surnames and I descend from James and Jane. I was researching surnames in the area to try to find descendants of this family as I cannot find anything on this side of my family any furhter back. THe rest of me is all Rowan/Davidson County names that came from the Palatinate. I have some of the same gggggfathers 6 times and so does everybody else from there. From your site so far I got one lead that there was an Isaac Teague that was a JP. Now I need to see if he is the one that had Ellen.

My Line Thomas Wilmoth Sr. B. approx 1703, son- Thomas Wilmoth Jr. B 1734, son - Nicholas B 1762 Feb 24, son- Thomas B. 1794, son Benjiman I. Wilmoth B.3 Apr 1835, son Eldridge Garry Wilmoth (Ed) B. 25 Oct 1858, son-Arthur Earl (twin) Wilmoth B. 11 Mar. 1902. Arthur Earl Wilmoth was my Father. I was born when he was in his forties. I am my Father's second daughter.

I also have a copy of the Book "Wilmot-Wilmoth-Wilmeth" by Lillard Wilmoth. Published in 1940. I was extremely lucky to have a family member who had an original copy and loaned it to me so I could copy it. The book is a great reference book and has 374 pages - with most lines of the Wilmoth family traced. I believe that Edward Wilmoth was my ancester- He came to this country in 1635. Walter Wilmoth told me during phone conversations that he had traced it differently. I have not seen what he has done. I will check your link out to him. Could you be a cousin of mine somewhere down the line?

Earliest known ancestor Thomas Sexton
Time Frame est. birth 1740 in VA?, death bef 9/1796 in Spartanburg Co., SC
Location unsure
Comments:
Patricia,

Nice work on the Sextons.

My Sexton line arrives in Spartanburg Co., SC before 1768 when Thomas Sexton claims a headright grant of 300 acres on the Tyger River (probably himself, wife, and 3 children). I've not been able to tell from where he hails but suspect it may be Bedford Co., VA where I find a Thomas Sexton that appears on a 1758 Muster Roll of the Bedford Co., VA militia. Other Bedford Co., VA pioneers settled in Spartanburg Co., SC including a John Sexton and his wife Mary Ann Gilbert. Thus my reason for suspecting that our Thomas may be from Bedford and may also be related to this John Sexton.

I've been researching for years but have not yet gotten to the VA Archives - I will one day!

In the meantime, should you encounter a Thomas Sexton of VA and SC from this period, please let me know.

Kind Regards,

Jim Sexton

I am a direct descenddant of William and Leah. Thanks for correcting the Joseph Sexton theory. I've always felt this was wrong. Do you know if Leah is descended from the Ferree family of Lancaste Co. PA? I sometime see her listed a Leah Virginia Ferree. William died 31 Dec 1829 in Corbin, Whitley,KY. Leah went on to Indiana when her children did and died 18 Aug 1839 at Hobbieville, Greene, Indiana. She MAY have been buried in the Storm Cemetery there. I would like to be added to your list of descendants. If you will e-mail me your mailing address, I will send a complete record of my descendancy from William and Leah. Please reply. Hi Pat,

I see you everywhere on the Internet re: the Markee's. Until yesterday our family has believed the "James in the Barrel" legend. My line goes back to James via my father Richard Churchill Markee, his father, Walter Montgomery Markee, his father, Robert Cook Markee, his father James Markee/Rhoda Johnson, his father James Markee from Gloucester. How far back have you gone with the Markey line? Beyond James & Mary Read? Are you stuck there?

In 1967 I received a book of the descendants of William and James in America. It was compiled by Vernard E. Sherman from LaCross, Wis. Are you familiar with it? It probably has over 1000 names...but no informtion re: the Markey roots in England.

I am extremely interested in discovering more re: the Markey's in England. Can you give me any help?

Sincerely,

Hi there. I have a question about #39 James Chapman and Jane Hoyle.

According to your chronology Jane would have been bearing children into nearly her sixtieth year, which is most unlikely. Do you have a source for this?

The reason I am asking is that there is another website that has Alexander Chapman as the illegitimate son of Margaret Chapman (whom you have as his older sister by sixteen years) and gggGrandfather Noah Hudson.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hudsonfiles/WC01/WC01_070.HTM

Do you have any corroborating data for your chronology? Thanks

Hi,

My name is Paul Stewart. I have in my possession my great grandmother's old autobiography that she wrote as a very old lady in the 1950s. In it, she details all her early childhood as well as being a pioneer from Indiana to Kansas in 1876. Along the way she says our family met up with and travelled with a very nice family by the name of Markee. She says there were eight in all. Once the two families got the the KS/MO border (after many months of travelling together) they parted company- my family going on to Wichita, the Markees going to the Topeka area.

Ring any bells? If so, I'll copy what my g grandmother worte for you.

After being invloved in a punch up with a fella, and mistakenly thinking he killed the bloke, which he had not, Patrick fled Dover.. Last sighting was in NYNY.

Curious if anyone may know of a Patrick Markey, orginally from NH, who lived in the NY area.

Connected through Michael Katterman(1745-1781) who married Maria Elizabeth Batdorf(1746-?). She was the daughter of Hermanus Btdorf and Maria Barbara Anspach. Have been attempting to find some relatives. My side of the Kattermans changed the spelling to Katerman in late 1800s.

The name Markee and Markey was oringally Marquis, French huganotes. Exscaped to England during the relious prosicutions between 1400 and 1500.

William and James came to the United States in 1756 or around there. Served in the contental army during the American revalution.

Then bought land in Viriginia, later moved to Tippy Canoe, Ohio. And from there to Wisconsin in the 1800's.

From Wisconsin the desendants migrated out to other parts of the Untied States.

The spelling Markee and Markey are both conected to our knowlegde.

Name: Jim Sexton <jim.sexton@psi-sc.com>
Date: 2004-08-13
Earliest known ancestor Thomas Sexton
Time Frame Spartanburg Co., SC ca. 1768
Comments:
Patricia,

I've worked for a number of years piecing together descendants of my branch of the Sextons.
(see http://www.psi-sc.com/genealogy/sexton )

My earliest Sexton is a Thomas Sexton who arrives in SC and claims a grant of land on the Tyger River in what later became Spartanburg County. He received 300 acres (100 for him and 200 for his dependents). I've not found any evidence in the SC Archives regarding where he may have originated.

I hope to begin the search in NC, VA etc. for this Thomas Sexton soon. A interesting coincidence, if true, is the John Sexton and Mary Ann Gilbert spent time in Spartanburg Co., SC before moving west. Mary Ann Gilber has ties to Bedford Co., VA. Finally, I found a militia roster from 1758 listing a Thomas Sexton. A few clues to start...

In your work, have you seen any reference to a Thomas Sexton among the VA Sextons. He would probably have been born prior to at least 1750 (based on his arrival in SC) or perhaps the 1740's.

Regards,

Jim Sexton
Cayce, SC

I am trying to locate parents for my earliest known Mills relative, Wesley Mills. He was born in April 1823 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and married a Julia Ann Tucker. It's been a long while since I've worked on genealogy, but I thought that I had found a list of Wesley's siblings that seemed to have matched up with the names you have listed for the children of Margaret Markee and William Mills. Is there any chance that Margaret and William may have had more children that what you have listed, and do you by any chance have anything on my Wesley Mills?

Thanks for your time.
