II love the websites and all the interresting stories and information. My aunt Margaret Lillian Jones-Hewett and uncle Sam Hewett built their own house out of timber that they cut down themselves. I have newspaper clippings that show a couple of stories done on them by Leon Hale and they are in a book by Francis E. Abernethy called "Tales from the Big Thicket". They also cut down the biggest cypress tree located on Knights Bayou near Moss Hill in Liberty County. I'm told that it is still there somewhere.

My great great grandfather settled in Hardin county in 1834. He married a woman from the Oklahoma territory and settled in what is now Hardin County. It seems that the land grant that was given to my grandpa was so rich in oil that when he would plow the oil would seep out of the ground and ruin his crops. The Sun Oil Company heard of this and convinced my grandparents to swap for another section of land somewhere in the area and I would like to find out where that might have been and if it is still land that I or other family members would have claim to.

The Honey Island General Store was built in 1928 and operated by my Grandfather until 1968 when it was handed down to other family members. He also built and operated a movie theatre in Honey Island in the 40's and 50's. He was born in 1900 and moved to Hardin county in 1906. My father operated a service station and repair service for the logging trucks that worked out of the Kirby Mill located in Honey Island. My mother operated a cafe during the same time period. The Kirby mill was closed in 1957 and the small town soon was all but gone.
