Hi Joyce, I have a brick wall that occurs with Bartholomew's grandson, James Martin (son of William and Jemima). He died in 1777 and I believe, he had two sons, William and Asa who were sent to Marlboro, New York to live with relatives. I am wondering if you have any thoughts on the matter or would like to discuss this Martin mystery?

My g-g-grandparents were Martin Meyer and Rosene Hoyler. Martin was born in 1822 and emigrated to NY and where he met Rosene. They married in 1856 and raised 8 children on a farm near Hempstead, LI, New York. Their children were Magdalena, Julianna, Nicolaus, Rosana, Joseph, Stephen,Frank Joseph. My Meyer descendants still have farms on Long Island and another line farms near Cohocton, NY. Some family stories say Martin Meyer comes from the Baden area of Germany, some say he lived near Alsace near the German Rhine River...as yet I just don't know. I would like to know if you have any idea of siblings of your older Meyer relatives so that maybe we are connected. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers,
Gerry Achtem, Summerland, BC Canada

Have you discovered any proof that Ebeneezer served in the Rev. War; he bragged to his grandsons that he had served & saw Gen. Washington on many occasions. True?
Tryphena Cogswell Martin came to IL w/her youngest son Charles & is buried here in Bureau Co. I have had many contacts w/the Rome Hist. Soc. trying to find proofs re the Martins & the Cogswells who lived in Western Co., NY.
There are still Martins in this area but are disinterested in genealogy.

I am 7 generations descended from John, looking for his forebear (maybe grandfather) who came to America, maybe from Wales. I have a memoir written by my great-great grandfather Stephen Martin b. 1835 stating "The Martins were of Welsh descent," and that "The first persons who settled in the Mass. Bay Colony by the name of Martin were two brothers who had followed the trade of weaver in the old country. One brother a few years later removed to what is now Rhode Island, and little or nothing is known concerning him after his removal. The other brother remained in what is now Mass." The Rhode Island brother may be your forebear. I got Ebenezer from an Ancestry Family Tree for the Evans family kept by NancyClay8 (whom I have emailed for input) as the father, born 1684, of my John b. 1710. It's possible your Bartholomew Martin, d. 1711, was Ebenezer's cousin, or second cousin. For some reason the Confirmation page that follows says you can't contact me, even though I filled in my email: email@example.com. Please do contact me.

Old family genealogy books, history bks. of a region, courthse. docs, cemetery records, etc. all work. Can anyone suggest or supply such proofs? Thanks.

Been to the Martin House Farm at age 3, then again with my husband & children in 1995. The last male Martin in my direct line is Benjamin Franklin Martin- who is my ggrandmother Clara Frances Martin's father. He was born in 1834 (Swansea, MA) & married Mary Anna Barney & my ggrandmother Clara was the last of 4 children. That line would have stayed in RI (Warren) but because of company relocation to Phila, PA (American Engineering Co.) my ggrandfather Fred Nelson Peck's employer, they had no choice. So that line after my only child grandmother, Ellen Viola Peck Burks, stayed there. I was born there along with my husband Rich & our 3 children. We moved to DE 19 years ago. Our grandson Paul was born here & is the 1st. All in all, am the 11th generation down from John. Can't locate the original family genealogy I was given at the farm- but remember the original ones came over in 1634/5. Wasn't John born then, so was it Edward that came with Johanna? I remember it was starting to get warn with use, so put it in a plastic bag- where I can't find yet. So just thought I'd let you know of another cousin you have. Hope to hear from you soon, Joyce!- Cindy :>)

Have we corresponded? I visited Mexico, NY this July and was very close to Caroline Pike's grave and didn't realize it. My mother lives near Wadena, MN, and I've gone up there for years and never realized that my ancestor, Chloe Hopkins Martin was buried there. I knew Lettie Martin Irish lived in Bemidji, MN but my grandmother said that there were Martins in Wadena. Now I know for sure. Thanks for all your hard work. I can help you fill in some of the details. I visitied Sharon Cemetery (and Prophetstown) at Thanksgiving. I still have family in the area. I'm in Minn.

I have barely started researching the Meyer line as so much of the queries on the web are in French. There were both Christian and Jewish Meyers & I understand that the Jewish Meyers were a very well-to-do and influential family in Alsace Lorrain. There was an assortment of religions in my grandmother's line - her family were Huguenots who went to
Germany, by the time of her birth her family was Catholic...all very interesting. She came to America in the late 1800's.

Name: Abigail Sarah Martin <firstname.lastname@example.org> Date: 2003-10-09 Our Common Ancestor Bartholomew Martin? Your connection to the Martin or Meyers families Martin Comments:
My great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather was George Martin, born ca. 1660, either in England or the colonies, not clear. He married Abigail Lord of Salem, had at least one son, Thomas, was known to be in Newport, RI in 1680's-90's (court case records), probably died around the same time as Bartholomew, after which his son Thomas claimed "his father's land" in Martha's Vineyard. George may have spelled his name Martine or Martain at times, may have been a brother of Bartholomew, may have been a son of John of Barnstable, MA, and possibly cousin of the George Martin of Salisbury/Amesbury, MA whose widow Susannah (North) was hanged in Salem in 1692. His son Thomas married Amy Daggett (of the "Bow and Arrow Daggetts"--Martha's Vineyard Indian ancestor), a descendant of the enigmatic Hepzibah Brotherton, whose surname has been carried through this family as a first or middle name for many generations. Thomas and Amy had several children, including sons Thomas, Peter, and Brotherton, b. 1719, who left the Vineyard, married Betty Bartlett (five Mayflower ancestors including John and Priscilla Alden) in 1746, settled in Lebanon, CT and had six children. In 1761, they moved along with many others from Lebanon and other RI, CT, and MA areas, to Horton township, King's County, Nova Scotia, now Wolfville, with land grants to resettle the rich farmland there. In 1799, their youngest son Chandler married Nancy Comstock, a descendant of Balthazar DeWolfe and numerous royals dating back to the Plantagenets, and all the way back to the earliest kings of Scotland. Their son Rufus married Mary McQuarrie, had son Chandler (b. 1835) who married Martha Foxe and had son Frederick Brotherton Martin, b. 1875, my grandfather, who migrated back to Providence, RI, sometime before 1903 when he married my grandmother, Caroline Evans. Are we related??? By the way, are you aware that Martha's Vineyard was at one time called Martin's Vineyard? No one exactly knows why, though the captain of Bartholomew Gosnold's ship which made the first exploratory voyage to the island in 1602 was a John Martin, and his cartographer was John Brereton (Brere...Brother...Brotherton???)....

If you put in my grandmother's name, Evangeline Ardella Millard, you will get to him sooner. There are myriads of Millard and Massey people, and most seem to be online (thank goodness!). Tefft was the first name I checked in your list. Now I'm going back to see what else I find. ;)

I know I shall enjoy following this website - it will be an on-going saga of two families that I am related to. This will be especially interesting to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren in years to come. I only hoope they will take an interest in their heritage and be as proud of their roots as I am. Thanksfor all of this to my daughter Joyce Martin O'Connell for she has certainly taken a huge interest in family. It always amazes me when I think about all the people who have come before me - all they went through to make a better life for themselves, the sacrifices they made, the hasrdwships
they endured, all to get this generation to this point where we can read about them through the magic of this computor. They would have had to write all this down by candle-light of oil lamp-light. We have letters written many years ago in pencil - probably did not have access to pen or ink Butwrite they did just the same and we are so thankful for that because they tell great stories.. Thanks to all of them and to you, too, Joyce
