Wonderful town. It was very supportive for my brothers and I growing up in the 50s and 60s; and we continue to do what we can to support the community.

Am interested in research on/about Solon as husband is descended from Ezra Fletcher (Fletcher Mountain?) through his son, Charles who came west to California in 1860's. Most of the family stayed in Maine, so we've got lots of research to do in your area!! Looks beautiful on the website.

I sure miss Solon. My family has history there, including things like: My great grandmother (Grammy Jones) stayed in an apartment at Grays (I think, I was very small then). I think her husband owned the general store at one time.
My grandfather (Roland)was a postman and lived on Ferry Street. My grandmother (Hazel) was active in the Eastern Star and we went to the meeting hall several times during my summer visits.
I hope the town is doing well.

Hi There ~
I just came across your website and thought I'd drop you a note. I just came back from Solon about 3 weeks ago. I went to the school reunion and saw tons of old friends and acquaintences. It sure was strange coming back after 20+ years. I have no clue who I'm writing to, but wanted to just say thank you again for all the small town hospitality. It hasn't changed a bit.

I tried your Solon queries, lookup volunteers, and surnames buttons, but apparently the sites are under reconstruction. I have ancestors who were born in Solon and married in Caratunk. I would like to know more about them and the area in which they lived. Can you direct me to websites or individuals who might be able to help me. I am most interested in the Rice family. Stephen Ayer Rice ws born on 28 Jan 1812 in Solon. His father Aaron Rice was born somewhere in Maine in 1782 and married in Caratunk, ME in 1807. I do not know of further ancestry in the area, but suspect there may be others. I would like to know if there are Rices living in the area now. Perhaps they are distant relatives. Sincerely, Bill Moon (billmoon359@aol.com)

A walk down memory lane back to 1979 when I was a mere girl of 17 and an apprentice at Lakewood theatre. The crew and I took a break on a Sunday evening to go camping beneath the shadow of Bigelow Mountain. First however we went to a concert at the Solon Inn. Jonathan Edwards band played and I recall trying to figure out how in the middle of nowhere all the people had appeared. It was a time in my life. Sorry to hear that they had to resort to making apartments out of the old hotel. The same is true in towns such as Kingfield and Rumford but at least the structure still stands which can serve as a focul point for recalling the towns special history to those who will take the trouble to learn it.

The Bingham and Surrounding Towns pages are in possession of fresh Solon material, and Embden as well, but because of the amount of new material we have acquired from the estate of Harold M. Sterling, do keep checking, but please be patient!

Thanks for staring a site for one of my favorite towns! I would love to know more about the history of the Solon Hotel. I have selfish reasons, my grandmother once owned it. I would love to find old photos of the Andrews Varity Store. As a child we lived above it for a brief time while my father was in the service and also visited it many times over the years. I have lots of memories of the icecream bar inside, the funny plastic toys that would "walk " down slanted boards, the big wood and glass counters with all the pretty hankerchief's displayed inside. All the family photos were lost in the fire. I visit Solon each summer and am busy collecting family history to share with other members.
