I am researching Monroe Porter of Franklin County, Alabama, who married Martha A. "Mattie" Colburn around 1898 and had one daughter named Lou E. It was a teenage marriage for both. They are listed on the 1900 census for Franklin County, and I can find no trace of Monroe and Lou after that. Mattie married James Smith Horton in 1903 in Franklin County using the name of Mrs. Mattie Porter on the marriage record. Mattie and James Horton were my paternal grandparents.

My great grandfather is:
William Harrison Porter
1844-1935
great grandmother is:
Mary Ryan
1836-1916
Both immigrated from Ireland in the 1800s. My wife has been working on my genealogy and has been unable to find any documentation to go further. William owned a home in Waukegan, IL and we are hoping that a study of the land records may provide information that will help us make connections with their birthplaces and their parents.

We have an obituary letter for William Harrison that states the following:
William Harrison Porter's father is:
Moses Porter
William Harrison Porter's mother is:
Susan Jenning
The letter states that William and Mary emigrated from Counties Clare and Limerick. There is no indication that either Moses or Susan ever left Ireland.

She went to Sheridan Elementary School and possibly also to Denman Junior High School (both in SF, CA). After she left SF area, she moved down to Millbrae, CA.

My husband's Grandfather was Milton Porter Runyon of Daytona Beach, Volusia County, FL.
I am a genealogy freak so I am excited by what I was given recently when my husband's parent's died. His mother still had boxes and boxes of things she had gotten when her mother (Milton Porter Runyon’s wife# died. In one of the boxes I found a 'very' old book..."A Genealogy of the Descendants of Richard Porter'- who settled at Weymouth, Mass, 1635. Also some accounts of the descendants of John Porter who settled at Hingham, Mass 1635 and Salem #Danvers# Mass 1644. It is written by Joseph W Porter of Burlington, Maine in 1878. There are a lot of hand written pages of notes and some newspaper clippings. I can’t determine who wrote the notes, perhaps my husband’s grandfather wrote them. The book's binding is in very poor shape but all the pages are there. I know what a treasure this is for someone. If anyone is interested, please contact me at bstraton@bellsouth.com. Please have some sort of proof #family tree on Ancestry.com or another site# that you are of the Porter family. I am located NW of Atlanta, GA. Looking forward to hearing from someone.
Thanks, Beth Tyner Straton

Hugh and Violet migrated first into Abbeville Dist., SC, fr. PA and then into Pickens Dist. (Old Pendleton Dist.), SC. Since that time, all the above have lived all or most of their lives in Pickens Dist./County, SC, loated in the western part of the state.

I have a number of years of research on this line which I will be happy to share if you do not have it. Many PORTERS, whether by surname, blood, or both, descend from Hugh and his wife Violet and have migrated into many areas all across the USA. I have DNA confirmation that I am, for sure, a descendant of Patrick (through his son John Walker Porter), because I have a match with one of my distant cousins who descended through another of Patrick's sons, Samuel. So, if any of you Porter men think you are in Patrick's line, here is a way to know for sure -- take a DNA test, and compare the results to mine. Send me an e-mail for details. Happy hunting!

Just happened on this website, and will peruse it carefully when I find time. PORTER is such a common name, and I'm glad to see there is a site like this that should surely makes it easier to tie down one's particular twigs on some branch of the BIG TREE.

My twig has to do with Sarah PORTER b. ca 1824 who m. Samuel WILEY in 1847, Derryvane, Parish of Muff, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Members of Knowhead Presby. Church. Immigrated shortly after marriage, May, 1847, on ship 'Venice', on which log the name William PORTER follows name.

Sarah evidently made trips back to Ireland while her parents were alive - have photo taken by photographer in Londonderry - and if US Fed. census is correct, her oldest child Moses WILEY was born in Ireland. [He doesn't seem to have progeny.]

So I've hunted for a long time for evidence and proof of Samuel WILEY's and Sarah PORTER's parentage.

Hi, My paternal grandmother was a Porter from Southery in Norfolk, England. I;ve found her father, Wiliam 1834/6 - 1902, and his father, Noah, 1804/6 - 1885, but I'm really struggling to get any further back. I think Noah's father may also have been Christopher, and suppose he would have been born around 1771. Anyone got anything to offer me here, please?
Regards
Christine

My maternal grandfather was Herbert Cecil PORTER b.04 Feb 1888 in Battersea, (now London) England. He was sent to Canada as a British Home Child in 1902. Because he was an orphan I had a great deal of trouble tracing his ancestry but managed to come up with a great story. Anyone interested may contact me.

My dad is deceased but always wanted to meet his half brother and sister. John Walters dad, John L., came from England and eventually settled in Eastern Colorado. John Walter was born around Denver, CO. This is all info I have but would like to find anyone related or that might have info on my fathers family. My mother's grandfather was William Thomas Porter (Billy) born March 14, 1863; came from Fayetteville, Alabama to TX the later part of 1883. Some of the paperwork says Fayetteville, Mississippi.
It is thought that William Thomas Porter was a Jr. His father died during the civil war with measles. Unsure if his name was George W. Porter (soldier listed as having Died of disease 45th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 18 April 1864). Earliest enlist date would be June 1862. His mom passed away when Billy was 8 or 10 years of age.
Billy had one sister Jane

There is a strong branch of the Porter Family eminating from Framlingham in Suffolk (England). Visitors to the Church will note that the Porters were benefactors for many generations. Eldest sons generally named Richard, and latterly (since the 1830's) went into the law.

I have been searching for over thirty years trying to find out what happened to my great grandfather's brother, James Asbury (or Asberry) Porter. He was born in 1893, probably in Mills County, Texas, to William S. Porter and Carrie E. Collins Porter. In the early 1900s he resided in Austin, Texas. The most recent information I have found for him was when he visited my grandfather, Wilber Ernest Porter, in 1932 in Pleasanton, Texas. At that time, James Asbury Porter, lived in Austin. One family member has reported that he went by the name of "Ira" Porter also. Most records that I have found show him as Asbury or Asberry Porter. He had six older brother: Millard Eugene Porter (1877-1909), Stark Parson Porter (1879-1912), Warren Collins Porter (1882-1884), William Elmer Porter (1885-1939), Clemens Ernest Porter (1889-1935), and David Sims Porter (1887-1955).

Searching for confirmation/roots of my ggg-grandfather William Allen PORTER b. 5/25/1807 Suffolk Co., Long Island, NY. Married Mary (Mollie) Mollissa BUTTS abt. 1831. His birth in Long Island is family story, unconfirmed, and "in-flux". 1880 KS census indicates his birth in "Wash twp" in NY and his father as born in NY also. Same for wife Mollie. No indication yet of a Wash twp in Suffolk Co., but there are in other NY counties. We have no clue as to names of his parents or siblings. William & Mollie ultimately had 5 sons and 2 daughters and the large family spread out all over the west from Doniphan Co., KS in the mid 1800s to early 1900s. If you have any dangling NY Porter links I'd be glad to trade info.. Thx

I'm the great-great-great-great grandson of Elizabeth Porter, daughter of Samuel Porter of Fauquier County, Virginia, wife of John Jett of same county. Both died in Bracken County, Kentucky. To date I've had little verifiable success in tracing Samuel Porter. Jeter Lee Jett wrote me twenty years ago that Samuel had been a Virginia state senator, another source said he had been captured at the battle of Quebec and exchanged as a prisoner of war. But there's no certainty. I look forward to learning more.

I am looking for any information on my ggrandfather, Thomas Albert Porter, born about 1849 in Georgia (we believe) but could have been a neighboring state. He married Rosa Lee (do not know her maiden name). He died around 1928. The story is that they ran away from home at a very young age, married and never returned or contacted anyone. They eventually settled in East Texas and had about 13 or 14 children. I'm told 3 of these were triplets who died as babies. Some of the names of their children were: Albert, Nora, Arthur and Thomas Oliver Porter (my grandfather). There were others but do not know their names. Nora married Baxter Young and lived near Houston. Her children's names were Vesta, Bessie, Ethel, Burl and Geneva. Albert (known as Uncle Eb) married Florence and lived in and around Greenville, TX. Two of his children were Cullen and Howard. Arthur married Riddy. If anyone has ever heard of any of these people, please contact me at the above E-mail address. Thanks!

By the way, this is a very nice site.

Other than that I know very little.

Thanks! Researching Drew in AZ, CA, OR, OH. We have a repeating middle name in Edwin Porter Drew, which we think has skipped generations since the 1700s.

Hello!
Just wanted to say that I don't have a website as yet. I am
a librarian and very interested in genealogy, especially of my Porter family. All I have is a family history that an uncle of mine did in the 50's and 60's I think. I would like to get more definitive info if possible because he did not document much. Since working at the library, I have become more interested and just do not have the time to research much. I hope to do more when I retire.
Have a good day. Jo

I have lost my g.grandfather in Kirkcudbright, Scotland. He is James Porter, his father thought to be John, and his son, my grandfather, also John. James married Elizabeth Laurie, but is thought to have died soon after. I have just discovered the Porter site and will keep visiting and contribute what I can from New Zealand.

You have a lovely web site with a vast number of documented names. Well worth the visit even if I didn't find what I was looking for. My Porter/Cline connection would have occured at least 200 years ago.
One suggestion to improve speed: Rather than have the entire data base on one page you might consider separating it into alphabetical pages or even pages within the G's for instance, by the first two letters of the name, such as GA,GO & etc.

I would very much like to contact other Porter's who may have some relationships. I live in Lubbock, Texas, and have hit a wall on my genealogy search: my granddad was Joseph P. Porter, born in about 1870 just east of Nashville, Tenn, his Dad was John Porter, born about 1845-50 in Alabama with maybe a brother named Alexander, also born about 1850 in Alabama. Love to hear.....

Hi fellow researchers. What an excellent site! Thank you!
I do not have a GEDCOM ... I am searching for PORTERs in Worcester, England and have info back to early 1700s. This is my mother's maiden name. Please contact me at sgardener@gov.nu.ca if you would like any information from this area on the PORTER name.
Thanks! Susan.

There are several Porters in our Winesett family. Polly Porter and Andrew C. Porter are just two. There is no quick index to the Porters on my page but Polly is listed with Samuel Winesett on my index. Karen Jones Hall at kjhall67@hotmail.com is really interested in the Porter family.

I think this is the nicest tree for a family I have ever seen. I am related to the West Virginia Porters. Fort Gay and Radnor area. I have one living Aunt. I got to talk to one of my family members I had not seen in many years thru one of the Porter web pages. Please keep up the good work. God bless you and please keep it free for those who do not have, God will bless you richly for it.
