I have been to Rende with my father, mother and wife on a vacation to S. Italy. I drove from Naples to Calabria.
We visited the local church and saw many Lentos who now rest there.

I was happy I came across your great website and the Cuduridi recipe. My mom made them every Christmas Eve from scratch. I make them but can't take the chance of them not turning out right, so, on to Polentini's to buy the dough. The time on the Eve is so precious and frying 10# of dough uses a lot of it up.

I just wanted to thank you for having the Turdidi recipe. My grandmother was an excellent at the Italian American Club for many many years before she passed away. She always made the best food. I remember her making these cookies at the same time the scalidi would be made, due to them both being fried and dipped in honey. I enjoy very much making all the traditional dishes and desserts she made, unfortunetly she didn't have allot of recipes, they were all in her head! My father is Francesco Tenuta. He was born in San Fili, Cosenza and one of 9 children. He is the son of Umberto Tenuta and Giuditta Cosentino. He moved to Canada (Toronto) in 1959 when he was 19 years old. All his brothers/sisters except for Anna who still lives in San Fili moved here. He lost a 15-year old brother in Italy back in 1965. Both his parents have since passed away but everyone else lives here in Toronto. It was really interesting to stumble upon this web site. Keep up the good work and I'll keep checking in. My husband and son and I were there in February, 1996.
We took the ferry from Sicily and drove to Cosenza and Marano Principato. We found the cemetery and saw a War Memorial Marker with many Ruffalo's names. It was a short stay and during the afternoon. We did not see anyone around.
I did copy the pages of Nigro's and Ruffalo's from the phone book.
My brother has just returned. We have not seen his pictures yet. He lives in Cleveland, Ohio and we live in Kansas City, MO

My Grandfather had a brother "SAM" and he and SAM first went to Kenosa. They had a bar and my grandfather Filiberto moved to Buffalo. Uncle Sam had a noticable scar over one eye and was balding. I have been to Calabria many times, but last year (June 2006), I finally took my husband and two children for a visit. They loved it and my husband, Tim Carls who is a fine artist and a graphic designer by trade, is showing some of his photography at the Anderson Arts Center in Kenosha, Wisconsin through July 22nd featuring several photos from our trip. From 1948 to 1952 I lived at 1322 W. Taylor Street in the Jane Addams project. In that time I went to Jacob A. Riis School.
If you have not visited the old neighborhood lately you'll be shocked. Most of the project buildings are gone and Riis School will be gone soon. Recently I learned of a movement to save 1 Jane Addams building for a museum.
The people working on the "Project Museum" were surprised to hear that I thought it was a great place to grow up. Surely, I was not the only one to have a positive experience on Taylor Street. If you'd like to share your stories about life on Taylor Street please contact me.

Dad was born in cosenza/rendi but not sure if is marano principato or not.
Dad has a very good friend that he is related through marriage, Dominico Tenuta, in Vista,CA. i know they are from the same town, and knew each other's extended family when they were kids in the old country. the didnt know each other in italy, but met by accident sometime in the 70s (a bird breeding club) and found out they had much more in common than bird breeding.
it is the tenuta/ruffolo connection that caught my eye in your website.
there is another Ruffolo family from the same region that Dad says we are not part of that clan.
Maybe you know something you can tell me: my family, Ruffolo, used to own a large farm/ranch something like that, called Monaci, near Cosenza. Dad grew up on that farm, and his birth is registered in Rende. His name is Luigi, son of Salvatore(son of Silvestro) Ruffolo and Marietta Cardamone. My cousin is a big wig in the local diocese,Monsignor Fausto Cardamone.
I tell you this because maybe you can peice together a few bits and tell me if it is the same Ruffolo family your website speaks of. To the best of my knowledge, there is nobody named Ruffolo left in Italy that comes from my family line. We are all here, originally settled entirely in Chicago, but now dispersed(my cousins etc...) throughout all the corners of the nation, but primarily in FL,Chicago, and CA.

June 2006 - I just came back from my first visit to Marano Principato to see my Bilotto cousins. We are both descendants of Michele Henry Covelli, born 11 May 1854 in Marano Principato. Michele parents were Luigi Covelli and Rosa Caira. However I am very confused about Luigi's parents. Since my relatives do not speak any English, it was hard to find out information about my ancestors. I thought that Luigi's parents were Gaspare Covelli and Rachela LaMacehia. This is the first of records that I've been able to come across on my family's history. I have a long lineage of Carlo Macrito's and Bruno Macrito's from my grandfather's side and my grandmother is a Sturino. From my understanding, there were three or four Conforti sisters who married Macrito bothers, and thus, here we are today.
Some of the family (i.e. my father, grandfather, etc.) came to America from Cosenza in the 1950s, but others either stayed in Italy or went into Canada.
I find it interesting that I still run into family here in the states who stem from our roots in Marano Principato.

Wonderful website! My grandfather, Vincent Tenuta, came to the U.S. from Cosenza. He had two sons, Francis (Frank) and Val (Valentine). Frank was my father. He passed away last October at the age of 82. Not sure when my grandfather moved here to Seattle but this is where I was born and raised. My father was a commercial artist and sign designer. When he passed away the local TV news noted his passing because he designed a huge rotating neon sign in the shape of a blue flame for the Natural Gas Company. The sign was situated high atop the Natural Gas building downtown and became a well known landmark for decades. The sign is now being prepared to go on permanent display in Seattle's Museum of History & Industry.
