Hi, my mum passed away several years and wasn't able to give me much info about her family. Her Dad was Daniel Carmichael and was a policeman in Ballymony, Ireland before immigrating to Auckland, New Zealand in 1928 or 1929. He married Maggie Blair possibly 10 or 20 years before immigrating. They had 6 children, my mum being the youngest was born in Feb 1929 shortly after they arrived here. Shortly before she died she told me she had no recollection of aunts or uncles on either side of her family and believed all contact was lost with them when the family left Ireland. I have maintained close contact with aunts, uncles and first cousins over the years so I know their own family histories. My great grandfather was a David Carmichael who lived in St. Joseph, Missouri in the mid to late 1800s. He had two families - one with a first wife who died (children grown) and one with a second wife. I have letters to David Carmichael's brother James written shortly after the Civil War from friends in the Amazonia area. Evidently, the Carmichaels lived in Bridgeport, Penn. before moving to Amazonia.

First, let me introduce myself. I am a retired University Professor (Chemistry) who now has the time to pursue an interest in his ancestors. My paternal grandmother's name was Christina Catherine Carmichael, which led me to the Carmichael Family Online Research Site. There I was led to your research on the family of Donald Carmichael and Mary McCalman, because I have a copy of the Extract of an Entry in a Register of Marriages in which the marriage of my great-grandfather Dugald Carmichael and great-grandmother Helen Miller is recorded. (My grandmother Christina is their daughter.)
The important point is that Donald Carmichael and Mary McCalman are listed as Dugald's parents. At the time of the marriage (14 Jun 1878) Donald is listed as deceased. His occupation is listed as Sheriff Officer. Mary is not said to be deceased.
Is it possible that Dugald is a child of Donald and Mary? If so, his birth date and place have yet to be discovered. His gravestone in the cemetery at Newkirk, Kay County, Oklahoma, USA, gives his birth year as 1853. Since your research has shown that Donald and Mary moved between the birth of Alexander (1851) and Archibald (1855), it seems possible that Dugald's birth (if he is their son) is recorded in a parish register which has yet to be examined.
I am further intrigued by the entry in your web page for Donald and Mary's grandson John MacLean Carmichael who was born in 1899 in Newkirk. My great-grandparents Dugald and Helen, along with my grandmother Christina were living there at that time, after having emigrated from Glasgow around 1890. My grandmother's siblings also had names which echo those of Donald and Mary's children and grandchild - John, Lachlan, Flora and Mary.
Of course, without definitive documentation, this is all conjecture, but perhaps fruitful conjecture. If you think that it is worthwhile, I would certainly appreciate having your advice on how to proceed.

That is my 5x's great grandpa. They had a son named Archibald in 1801 and he married Martha Pennington. Archibald and Martha had a son named Archibald as well in 1839 in Stokes Co, NC. My family and I moved to the town of Hillsburgh on July 1 1973 to the address of 21Mill St. and brand new house at the time. we lived there for 2 years and moved away in 1975
I am writing to inquire about a tragedy that happened in the town on Nov 6 1977. My best friend Danny Hunter, lived in a house on the corner of queen street and some other street that I don't now remember the name of. Ellen street or something like that. He lived there with his parents Dorothy and Desmond and his sister Terry.
I had already moved away by this time but Danny and I were still close.
on the date mentioned there was a fire in the house and it burned killing Danny and Terry and severely injuring Desmond, while he tried to save the children. Dorothy was uninjured as she had awakened first and gone for help.
I went by there yesterday and I visited the grave site in the little cemetery north of town. I also saw the new house that has been built there, a strange yellow U shaped 4-plex that seems to go around where the old house sat across form the park.
I guess I am writing because I need to know. the Hunters were like a surrogate family to me and their loss to me, I was only 14 at the time was huge. my family just closed off all ties after the funeral which overflowed the Presbyterian church.
I never knew so much.
What caused the fire.

how are Dorothy and Desmond now?
their poor mother Dorothy was crying so hard the last time I saw her at the funeral that her brothers had to carry her.
I never fully dealt with this loss and I am hoping to find some answers so that I can finally finish my grieving. I have left it bottled up for so long

I stayed there for a while and went to Hoover school during the 1969 riots. I was in third grade at the time. But because of all of the violence, robberies, etc. It remains very vivid in my memory.

My sister and I are looking back into my fathers side of the family, his uncle Rufus Carmichael, the only brother to my grandfather, Otto Albert Carmichael. His grandfather was Constant Joseph Carmichael. We cannot get any information on him. Can anyone out there help? Our family did come from Scotland and migrated to Nebraska, I believe.
