Hi, I'm intrigued with the picture on your site, as I am doing some research into a 1911 Model T Touring car and that picture looks an awful lot like a 1911. I have tracked down the shipping record from Ford for the particular car I'm dealing with and it appears to indicate that it was shipped to a "Doyle Motor Co." in Humeston, Iowa, in September of 1911.
If anyone has info on that dealership, I'd love to hear about it, thanks.

I just sent out recently of their pictures of their progress and when it is complete I will send pictures of the completion. Put in the supject line Humeston site so I know you won't go to my junk mail. There is no charge for joining this list. I do not give your addresses out to anyone, unless you okay it first. I enjoy the website and reading the guestbook. I grew up in Humeston and lots of names are familiar although we don't get up that way often now. We live in Stover Mo. close to the Lake of the Ozarks. I remember going to Jimmie's Cafe and the dances at the community center when it was still the old theater. Guy Moom was the disc jockey and the music was great !!! The city park was put to good use to meet friends and skate on the cement skating rink. Too many memories to mention here, but Watermelon Day was a BIG event in my day. I remember the excitement of having a watch from Snyder's Jewelry Store dropped from an airplane and we would always try to find it. We live in a small town now and still enjoy the small town atmosphere, but never the same as your childhood memories. Thanks for keeping it alive. I started school at Humeston, graduated from Mormon Trail in 1963, married Dennis Boles, raised 4 kids, now have 10 grandkids (at last count) and glad I have the Humeston memories to look back on.

There you can either send me or him news or pictures you have of Humeston, they can be either new ones or old ones. If you obituaries you can also include them in the Obituary section.

I graduated in 1960 from the Cambria-Corydon school (now Wayne Community). I rememember the many years of the 'watermelon' feeds -- the climbing of the greased pole, the water fights put on by the fire department and just plain old fun. Hi, Pauline. Thanks for keeping us informed and in touch. Also wanted to say that I moved to Humeston from Osceola, IA in 1943. My father, Paul Johnston, was in WWII at the time and I lived with my grandparents, Dee and Della Johnston, and uncles, Floyd and Norman. Going to school and later playing basketball was all such fun. Even today when I come up against something difficult I always say to myself, "I'll have to give it that old HHS try!" I moved away from Humeston in 1957 but have kept up with the old friends and they are still my best friends. What a great place to grow up!

This was so delightful to see all the work that you have done to help us remember Humeston. My family moved away from Humeston when I was 16 and I have some very fond memories.(like the Friday night fish fries at Jimmie's Cafe and working at the drive in theater down the road.)
For a brief time my family opened an ice cream shop just across the street from Jimmie's Cafe. We were only open during the summer...It gave my twin sister and I something to do during our summers.
My roots are in Humeston...The Wishmeyers and Beals. I will always feel like it is home.
Thank you so much for keeping it alive.

My heart warms at your wonderful web-site. My family comes from Wayne county. John P Sinclair our patriarch came across the Missouri border, after a short stay in Mercer Co. just prior to the Civil War, having moved there from Grant Co. Indiana. My Grandfather Jesse Aubrey was a Justice of the peace and a city assessor for Corydon. He was born in Lineville. My father James Robert was born in Corydon. He stayed in California after WW2. Your evident sense of humour is greatly appreciated, these type sites are often dry as old bones and self important as a Calvinist missionary. Once again I thank you and keep up the good work. Wonderful details about Humeston's history. Can you suggest any web source that would provide details regarding Cambria?
I've been through the Iowa genweb site for Wayne Co., and
have also scanned listings for "Cambria, Iowa" on Jeeves
and Google but have found scant help anywhere. Have Yahoo
yet to do, but any guidance would be appreciated.

I am the daughter of Beverly Miller Lohr, class of 1947. I spent a lot of my youth visiting my grandparents, Hazel and Arthur Miller. I have fond memories of the skating rink and the next door neighbors, the Leeches. My aunt, Deleta Landphair, currently resides in rural Humeston and I have a lot of family in the cemetary, most recently my uncle, Kenneth Miller. This is a beautiful and well done website. Thank you for this creation.

Great Website. My grandfather was from your hometown too. I believe I have found some info. about his family here on your website. I have one picture that you may be interested in. Have heard that is the Gardner family home in Humeston. My grandfather was Dwight George Gardner. I saw that you have a article regarding the Christian church that was likely written by his brother,Daryl Gardner in 1969. I have a question that you may know the answer too, what is the R.C.U. store?(saw it listed in the yellow pages of 1921). Many thanks for sharing the info. about your town. I have often wondered what kind of place my grandfather lived in as a boy and this has helped put things in some perspective. It sounds like a very charming town.

Sure does bring back a lot of great memories as a kid growing up in Humeston. My family and I lived there from 1972 to 1980 when we moved to Kansas. My dad, Leighton, taught high school science in Garden Grove. My mom, Lynna, worked at the First Baptist Church. My sister, Laurie, went to school from Kindergarten to 6th grade before we moved. I was going into 5th grade when we moved. I still remember the ice cream store that use to be at the west side of the street at 56 highway and Summer Street. Thanks for letting me view this wonderful website and bring back some memories!

This is a great web site. I lived in Humeston from 1968 until 1973. I loved living in Humeston, from the old dog house to my great aunt and uncles store Snyders. My grandpa was post master back when I lived there. He was Rex Williams. And my grandma was Pat. I still remember my grandma and grandpa taking me golfing at the old sand green golf course. Is it still there?
Thanks again for a great web site on part of my history.

Greetings,
I was just made aware of the Humeston website by Pauline Gibbs Williams. What a "great trip down memory lane." Humeston was and always will be a special place for me... newspapers I delivered, collections I struggled for, groceries I carried home, groceries I bagged, streets I ripped through on my bike, meat I cut and wrapped and froze, gas stations where I loafed, teachers I challenged to teach me something, coaches who gave me a chance, mom and dad who guided me to adulthood, friends and buddies I have remained too distant from. Most of all I value the people of integrity, principle and reason of Humeston. They gave me the foundation for what and who I am.

Just wanted to make note of the change in email address. As we all know this becomes necessay at times due to all of the illegal use of computors. Oh to go back to the simple days of life when we were all much younger, and the major way of communication was either to spend the dollars and call long distance, or use snail mail. I know this is much handier, and we would not be able to keep up with things as we do, but sometimes all of the illegal use of the internet and email's sure is disgusting.

My grandparents met at the Normal College in Humeston in the early 1890's. Their favorite professor was Charles Crumpacker and as a result my father's middle name is Crumpacker. I have photos taken in Humeston at the Burnett Studio in the 1890's including a picture of my grandmother's class. Her name was Nellie Carlton and my grandfather was Havey Preston Canaday. My grandmother was from Westerville, Iowa and my grandfather was from Blythdale, Harrison County Missouri. This site is fun for me to visit.

I too grew up in Humeston, graduating in 1951. How fast the years have passed. I remember how hard we teenagers worked to get the skating rink in the park built. When I say work, I mean physical work, I can still feel a back ache when I think of all the sand we unloaded from 3 box cars by hand, plus 2 cars of gravel. I can still remember the "PRINCESS" theater, and the shows being changed 3 times a week. I remember you could get in for a dime, until you were in highschool, and then it cost a quarter.
I have some cherrished memories of Humeston, and I thank anyone and everyone who had a part in getting this site established and those who maintain and update it.

Thanks for all your dedicated hard work in preserving the past and making this website a welcome stroll down memory lane! Some of my fondest memories of Humeston is the Saturday night sock hops at the old community center with some of our favorite KIOA disc jockeys spinning those cherished 45s, or on occasion dancing to the live music of Dominic and the Dominoes. Some of the popular dances included the Twist, the Stroll, the Limbo and many more. And to top that all off, that one special dance partner will have been married to me for 37 years this June! Wouldn't it be great if for just a moment, our kids and grandkids could experience how golden and genuinely fun these times truly were. Keep up the good work, it is very much appreciated! Chuck
