My mother, Trudy Vandermeer, worked at Lazy Mountain Home in the late 40's where she met and fell in love with my father John Nidey who had traveled to Alaska from Iowa with Dale and Sylvia Nash to settle. They were married in Everett Washington and moved to Iowa. I remember visits from Ken and Vivian Hughes, the Walter Philips and the Sid Lindike families on our farm in Iowa. Also the Dale Bryant and the Hurt family from Palmer. Mother and Father returned for a visit in 1975 and Ken Hughes let them use his car. Mother passed away 11 years ago and Father is 93 and living a nursing home and doing very well. We have a photo album of their time in Alaska and the children and staff at Lazy Mountain children's Home with well over 300 photos. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may remember my mother, Trudy, or my father John Nidey. Thank you for all the research you have done. I am retired and am hopefully planning on a trip to Palmer and Valdez in the near future. Thank you again for your time and dedication to your research.

What you have done here is absolutely wonderful! My great grandfather, originally from Colorado, first went to Dawson City in 1898 and then to Nome in 1900. I believe he spent 4 years in Nome and then moved to Knik where he spent about 8 years. Need I say it? He was a miner.
I have only been able to find one census record of him in Nome in 1900, and I believe he is the A.S. Lee listed in the "Settlers in the Mat-Su Valley from Knik to Palmer in 1915." I would love to find more information about his life in Alaska but am not sure where to look.
My husband & I have lived in Eagle River since 1981 so I feel especially connected to my great grandfather who lived just minutes away all those years ago. Thank you so much for all your hard work in preserving this part of Alaska history. Carol

My parents (Clyde & Kathleen "Kit" Hornal) bought the old Borden property when they came to Wasilla in 1969 (that would be the house directly behind the playground of the Wasilla school - which is now city hall). Lots of fond memories attending that school and living next to a playground! My father homesteaded out old Knik in the 1950's when he came to Alaska the first time before me met my mother, married and returned in 1969 with us 2 boys in tow.

What a lot of work you've done! I am picking up on a research project I began 10 years ago and just found your site. Its too long a story to go into details now, but I am looking for info on both Catheran(or Katherine)Bayou and Chris Spillum. Because of the stories she wrote about him in the AK Sportsman's Magazine, I know quite a bit but they both disappear after 1945 or so. They seemed quite devoted to each other and I'd love to find out what happened to them. Also -- did you ever find out more about China Poot? I moved to AK back in 1979 to work for the folks who own the lodge there and the owner, Mike McBride, knows more. I believe the bay was named for China Poot (Putt?), who lived in a tiny cabin there on the flats -- or at least he trapped from there. Let me know if you want contact info, and/or if you have any leads to suggest for me for Katherine and Chris. Thanks for doing all you've done!

I am so very glad to have come upon your site....I am connected to Russell Shaw, and Alexa Shaw who married Charles Cadwallader. I will be visiting Juneau and Anchorage in April 2014 and hope to visit Wasilla. Our family story has always been that Russell built a road house but reading your site I now believe it was Cad who built it. I'm glad to have the correction. I have a bit more information on Russell but he and his family are very illusive. Perhaps we can chat when I get there? Thank you for your huge volume of work. I'm a genealogist in Minnesota and can really appreciate your site.

I grew up in Anchorage decades ago and was drawn into the wealth of information at this site. The newspaper references, stories and photographs are high quality. The tales of the Old Knik townsite were also interesting. There was a brief archeological project there in the early 1990's to identify and recover where all the grave sites were under impending development. It would be great to see whatever happened from that and any more information about all the Alaska natives and homesteaders from that area. It was a short boomtown.

Thank you so much for publishing your research. My family is among those listed in Chickaloon, and I appreciate the work you have done on that history. You wrote about the shooting of Jess Wickersham by his wife, Annie - those were my grandparents. She only spent one night in jail, which was unheard of for a native woman in those days. The trauma for her lasted a lifetime.
Jack and Olga Corey had many more children who were not included in your research. If you'd like more info on that, let me know.
I was looking for old maps, but am currently out of the state so am limited to internet research.

curt's great grandfather and grandmother, victor and manila bay yohn came from tomahawk, wisonsin in 1935. his grandfather married a sandvik whose parents also came in 1935 from mooselake, michigan. my husband remembers trapping beaver with his grandfather on a 20 mil trapp line next to Yohn Lake. He said their were 10 to 20 cabins along the trapline each cabin a days walk. we would like to know if the lake and trapline are still in the family, is there any family still in palmer and anyother information you may have. My husband has always been told his great grandmother, manila bay was native alaskan-records show she came from tomahawk. she died in the pioneer retirement home in1984. we'd like to know is the home still exists and if they have a death record anywhere that shows her race/tribe. we have heard that the yohn name in palmer around the 1970's was not good due to alcohol abuse. curt' father had bothers named eldon, mark and curtis. We don't know anything about eldon, mark died in a plane crash (into the lumber yard) and we can't find anything about curt. I hope you can help us with some history. curt remembers totems with raven and salmon outside his great grandpartents cabins. they were trappers, traders and the younger gernrations were bush piolets. We visited Seldovia several years ago but weren't able to get to the place where he lived. He died in 1947.

I can see that you have spent countless hours on this information and I am impressed as I haven't found much on AK genealogy. I haven't had time to search all of your stuff yet, but if you have any information about Cheif Ivan Blunka and his wife Natalia from Old Stuyahok and moved to New stuyahok, I would greatly appreciate it. I believe they lived between around 1912 and 2000. She I think died in 2001, he much earlier. There is a school named after him, I know for sure. I am trying to help my adopted daughter trace her genealogy. Let me know if you can point me in a certain direction or not? Thank you for all of your time.

Kermit B. Karns, Imperial NE; 13 Oct 2011; I don't have any relatives in Alaska that I know of, except Coleen Mielke! I note a CAA-FAA type once in a while. As an ex-CAA-FAA staffer, I knew or knew of several of them and can provide very limited data on a few. Coleen is connected through my wife, Lottie Wolf's Germans-from-Russia line. I've did a great amount of her genealogy. I'm currently into Chase County, Nebraska genealogy. Look for "swnegen" for my web site. I can respond to a few queries.

I am the new webmaster of the Anchorage Genealogical Society and one of our members sent me your website address. I have been looking through it and it is wonderful. We are trying to put together a Native Group to do their research of their families and as you know how difficult it is to trace Alaska
Native Roots. We put out a Monthly Digest and have a website at www.anchoragegenealogy.org. I hope you don't mind if we write up your site and add it to our links list of Alaskan Resources. If you are ever in town, please give me a call, as I would love to have coffee with you. Again, wonderful site and I KNOW how much work it has taken. You are to be commended.

I found your site while trying to get more information on Evan Justin "Jake" Tomlinson, an early pioneer of the Matanuska Valley. I found some things I could use and am very grateful. I also have a JOHN AND CLARICE (TOMLINSON) DRYDEN that seem very elusive although we know they lived in the Houston and/or Palmer area for quite a long time in the '40's and '50's. They died in a plane crash in 1959 but we do not know where they met, married or were buried.
Thanks for all your hard work.

This is a great website and it shows that an enormous amount of time has been invested in preparing it. I have already examined half a dozen of the links and found them interesting, and some useful.
My folks went to Seward in 1941 to get married, but moved back stateside in November 1941 since Fort Raymond was taking over the town. Then in 1952, they returned to Seward for 5 years with two sons. Their stories about Seward are found in Volumes 4, 5 and 8 of this link http://www.uphillbothways.org/html/their_history___.html.
Thanks Colleen for all of the work to put this page together! I am going to spend more time investigating some of the links to see if I can find more information about my folks time in Alaska. Your good work is appreciated!

I am in Anchorage helping her, she is terminally ill and the family has her at home, so have been getting away by looking on internet.

Greetings! Having finally completed transcription of my mother's Alaskan homesteading letters I certainly have great appreciation for the amount of work you have done to present these pages!! Kudos!
My parents, William (Bill) Dennison Lloyd and Mildred Anne Cahill Lloyd filed for 160 acre homestead back in the Eagle River Valley in May 1958, received title to the first 120 acres in August 1963 and title to the remaining 40 acres in I believe 1965. The collection of my mother's homesteading journals and letters is not 100% complete after all these years, but remarkably intact nonetheless. Although relative latecomers to the Territory, their appreciation for the grandeur of Alaska matched any I can imagine! I hope to ebook and print-on-demand publish my mother's writings after I have completed my final edits! Again, thanks for your work and for your site, link sent to me by my brother, Steven Lloyd of Title Wave Books in Anchorage. - Linda

It seems through your detailed knowledge that you might give me some other info on my Uncle. I know that he was partnered with my granddad in a laundry business. My uncle died in 1962, my granddad clarence edward died in 1997 and Janelle just died in December of last year and I don't know if you know my Uncle Clarence, but he passed away in 2001 mu Aunt roycie still lives around there. Is there anyway you can locate a newspaper article from that date that my Uncle died. Thanks for this great site. What a lot of work. I've worked for 30 years off and on, on my own family history. My great uncle, Herman Belah, lived in Ruby from about 1898 to about 1950. His story is interesting, and long, but he was a doctor in that area from 1911 until he left in about 1950.
Another possibly relative was Peter Ogle in Sunrise, in the 1900 census.
I currently live in Sunshine and have lived in interior and southcentral Alaska since 1976. I was born in San Francisco in 1946.
I found this site while researching for the history of the Sunshine area for a website I'm writing.
One thing I learned that surprised me, was the number of children in orphanages. It is so sad to think of these children growing up without their extended families.
Thanks for your work.

Hi! I am working on the geneology of the Rickteroff family in the Old Iliamna area and have information to 1778. My husband's grandmother was Agafiia Savva Rickteorff Anderson, married to Pete Anderson. Most of the information we have about them is from John Branson of the NPS in Lake Clark (maybe you've seen some of his books) and from Violet Willson in Naknek (who had gathered much information from information in Kodiak). Feel free to visit and look around the Rickteroff site @ myheritage.com ...its pretty facinating. The problem is that we don't know where Agafiia fits in so we can't make the connection to the ancestors.

I lived a few years with my sister out by Loberg lake,(she was married to Sonny), my brother and I used to pick strawberries from the experimental farms patch. Some of my brothers and a sister were foster kids on the Sandvik farm out by the Butte at the same time. I lived in Alaska until I was 18 and have lived in the lowere 48 since then. I live in Oregon now. I was in my 30's before I knew anything about my family's history with Alaska. It has been fun learning more over the years. Thanks for all of your hard work. Nancy

Parents - Arthur James Young (possibly from Maine)
My father often talked about owning the fish cannery in Waterfall Alaska and the government took it away because he did not have the proper papers when asked to show proof. It was deeded to him by the owners when it closed in lieu of pay for such good upkeep for many years.
I am Haida and Tlingit. Raven, Double headed Raven, from the Double Finned Killer Whale tribe. I just want to find my family lineage for my children's sake.

My Grandparents lived in Alaska after they were married in 1902. Three of there children were born there. I have a couple of old pictures of Alaska. My Grandparents moved there because they siblings there. Did find an Alaska census that showed where the Hutsell brothers were there for a while before they were married.

Coleen,I'm not so much researching as browsing. My family, the Roarks (parents Bill & Neva Roark) lived just beyond and across the road from the Mielke place. Mitzi Bleck, a Mielke relation, was my sixth-grade teacher in 1947, our first year in Alaska. I remember the Mielke trucks, dark blue with the Big Dipper and North Star on the cab doors.
I'm looking forward to reading everything at your website.

Hi Coleen, your site was sent to me by a couple of people and I'm glad to report that it has offered me a lot of info on my people as I am in the process of doing a bio of my family. Rare info that is hard to find at Ancestry or other places. Since I was adopted I had ONLY one name to work on........and I found interesting info in your listings. Your work is JUST FANTASTIC!! The name Brizgaloff is extremely HARD to track down let along tie them into other families who married into or out of the family. My birth mother's name was Olga Jean Brizgaloff but I cannot find her in ANY census or listing, anywhere. The only reason I know she even existed is I have pictures of her, talked to cousins who knew her and of course I am here to send you these plaudits!! Please keep up the good work, your attention to detail is greatly appreciated. Aloha, Valerie
